Dirty USSD - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Saw this on Engadget this morning...
http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/26/samsung-patched-dirty-USSD-vulnerability/
Is this something rooted users need to be concerned about? I searched and didn't find this posted here.

looks like Sammy already patched this, most likely with an OTA. so if you're stock and you took an OTA recently, you should be ok.
I think it also only affects TouchWiz ROMs, so if you are on a non-TW ROM, again, you are ok (I *think*). Each ROM's individual devs will have to tell you if that ROM has had the patch integrated or not.
Till then, if you are on TW, don't go to any atypical websites.

http://gizmodo.com/5946334/samsung-security-bug-can-wipe-out-your-galaxy-phone-updating
that link gives a bit more information, including a list of other phones affected.

Its been patched for almost all the phones listed already. Like said above the only way this is still an issue is if you are running a custom TW ROM and the devs didnt patch.

A lot of people may not have taken the last update. I personally didn't as I didn't want verizon's remote service program, the dumbed down no local search, and to lose root possibly. I just flashed the modem update for the no-sim issue separately. I'm hoping maybe an enterprising person will find a way to flash the patch somehow.

My phone is running stock and took the OTA fine, so this test came out with a good result for me.
Interestingly, I also noticed that sending that link to Opera doesn't kick off the dialer at all - only using the stock browser did that on my phone.

March 2012 baseband.

I'd like to know what differences those of you who have used the update tool are experiencing with the new baseband. Signal strength? GPS? Battery life? I'm using the one from July 2011, but I don't know what the differences (if there are any) between the two. Also, does the new bb need a different ril as well? I, think I saw something about v21y? Any help would be appreciated

Don't know the difference, but attached is the ril file you need for the new baseband. I've also sent an email to the developer of getril so he'll update it soon, I hope. Just extract it to /system/lib.
Sweet, thanks. I guess I'll flash the baseband and use this ril and report my findings.

I just installed the updated LG rom with the new baseband and android 2.3.4 today and it seems to have better signal. As for GPS I'm not sure because I never had a problem with it before. And I can't say anything about battery life yet as I just installed it around noon.
Just read that some people are having problems making calls on anything but stock roms after updating baseband. Anyone else got that issue?
I updated to the new stock v21y,
so far iv noticed the obviously new bb,
the key bored seems different, and the touch screen seems more responsive and snappier, if that makes any sence...
but i have also noticed that the colors seem brighter and more crisp.. can anyone els confirm that or is it just me?

Yeah, I heard the keyboard got updated. I think the kernel is the same, so I don't know about the touch responsiveness. Could you do me a favor and flash a custom rom (anything other than stock), use the ril posted above, and let me know if you can make/receive calls?

Already read just about every thread dealing with v21y...
And several people have already stated that pretty much no custom roms are currently able to make calls with the new BB ... so no need to try
Just going to wait for the devs to assimilate the new bb into the Roms....
Shouldn't take them more then a couple days... at most.

Does not show the RIL for V21y,
hey look up at the begining of this thread someone posted a link to the new ril with instructions.
It is in the second post
So far, here are my impressions regarding v21y:
* Battery life: I have been off charger for 10 hours now, and battery has only just slipped down to 80%
* Signal: Any residual signal issues that were not fixed with v21e and T-Mobile's repurposing have been fixed on my end.
* Swype: The built-in Swype keyboard has been updated with a new interface that takes a bit to get used to.
* Browser: Open Window limit reduced to 4 (from 8 in v21e)
* General speed: It does seem a bit faster and more responsive than before. A quick check with Quadrant on my phone gave me a score of 2147
Other than that, it's not much different than v21e.

I see, I see. Well it seems there are some benefits but, for me, they don't outweigh the fact that I wouldn't be able to use any other roms for now. I'll hold off on the new bb until our devs find a way to work with it.

Same handset so should work fine, however LG has already pulled it from the official update tool.
At this point the only option is to use the offline KDZ flash method.
Edit:
Please follow this thread and look for Core Memory's detailed instructions regarding the KDZ method:

Q&A for [ROM][Official][4.4.4] CyanogenMod 11.0 Nightlies for the Verizon Galaxy S3

Google Hangouts Call Wrong Mic
I have the latest nightly of this rom, and recently tried to use data calling over google voice with google hangouts. It works fine, except it seems to be using the incorrect microphone (the top one). I'm not sure if this is an app issue, or a rom issue so I am reporting the problem both here, and to google hangouts.
I want to run the most stable version of cm. Any recommendation?
Anyone else having the stretched front facing camera issue in Snapchat again? Haven't tested the normal camera, and its too dark right now.
I remember it was worse of an issue several months ago and got fixed, but its back for me.

Honestly theres no 100% stable version of CM.
But even the nightlies do a great job of getting pretty close. I'd honestly say just do a clean install of the latest nightly and go from there. If its not stable enough, go for one of the M releases
avoid M8 (or M9?), one of those had some pretty big issues.

also having hangouts use top mic
I have the same problem as @jfarre20 and i can confirm its not an app problem. This issue has been around since i first used CM over a year now. Its also in skype and others. I hope it can be fixed soon
First things first, I want to say thanks to Invisiblek. I've been out of the root/rom loop for quite some time and have recently been getting back into it. However, I remember all of the great things that you did for the HTC Incredible. I still have that phone (I keep every phone that I've ever owned) and if I need it as a backup for any reason, it still works like a champ. I'm glad to see that you are still continuing to do great things in this community. Keep up the great work and I can't wait to see what the future holds for you and your work.
Now, for my issue. I was using Wicked Sensations and my phone was running fine. Now that Wicked Sensations isn't really being maintained anymore, I decided to move onto something else. I chose to try CyanogenMod as I remember it being the most reliable rom on the Incredible. I installed CM11 and have of course had issues with the things that everyone knows is broken, i.e. camera, etc. My biggest issue is that I have noticed that my battery life has taken a pretty big dip and my phone gets very hot at times, especially when playing games. I reinstalled Wicked Sensations and no longer had the overheating issue. I believe the battery drain may be related to the overheating. Is there anything that I can do to control this overheating issue?
I recently sold my s3 and the buyer claims to have issues with GPS. I shipped the phone running this ROM. Does this rom have any history of GPS issue?
Verizon 4.4.2 Rooted
So i realize this question has likely been answered however this thread is 400+ pages long. I am running 4.4.2 on my Verizon Samsung SG3. Locked bootloader and rooted. I am able to launch the Android Recovery KOT49H.I535VRUDNE1. I have been unsuccessful in flashing a custom recovery thus far. Will i be able to flash a custom rom using the recovery already on the phone or will i brick the device and be sent unbricking it with Odin again? I have simply had it with the performance of the stock rom and have found changing it on this phone to be challenging. In addition to all i have read on various forums about the difficulty or flat out inability to do anything with a SG3 once it has received the OTA 4.4.2 update.

While I realize safe strap is a work around I will say this. The Rom I am running now is way smoother. I am glad that I used it and my phone seems to have new life. I am limited to the one Rom available but nonetheless it is stripped of bloat, cleaner and faster. I would recommend this option to anyone wanting to speed up their $3 with a locked boatloader. Thanks again for your input.

Also I should mention I installed it on the stock Rom partition. It was an added risk versus running it on its own partition but install was successful. It is a SUPERLITEROM! V3.0 1535VRUDNE1 DEODEXED. It is simply a variant of my stock but it does truly run faster, scroll smoother etc.

Not sure if this works in MIUI as I haven't ran this in a couple weeks. It was a nice rom though, I always did like MIUI especially the specialty MIUI built in apps..
Anyway, Device Control I'm 90 percent certain lets you adjust haptic feedback. I usually set mine to around 10 percent. The test button never works for me but when you hit okay, you can feel the difference.. There's a ton of other cool settings in there too. And it's free.
Also, if you use the KToonz Kernel, the KTweaker app also has the option somewhere in there to adjust the haptic feedback.
Hope this helps I know I may be late to the table, but maybe someone can make use of this information.

Corrupt KT747 Kernel
Greetings all. I was directed to this thread by the developer. So heres my issue:
I'm on SGS3 vzw. I installed MIUI 4.8.22 using TWRP (newest version). I cleared delvik, cache, factory reset thrice, flashed MIUI, then flashed gapps, then I flashed the cdma fix (I assumed that I needed it). I am unable to start a Xiomi cloud account and when I tried to flash the KT aosp 4.4.4 kernel, I got a "file corrupted" message. Is there an updated KT747 somewhere, or am I trying to install the wrong kernel or what? I would appreciate any help on the matter....BTW.....I really like the look of MIUI. I may keep it!

LineageOS-14.1-8-5-18

I have taken the original and heavily buggy version of lineageos and fixed a lot of the major bugs that came with it. As I mentioned, I was doing this for myself but figured I may as well share it. As I previously said:
QUOTE: "I have been using XDA for years but have mainly been using the roms that other dev's have built and also looking for answers to any questions I had to potential problems throughout the years. I have never felt the need to create an account as I felt I had nothing to offer, everything that I could do was already being done by someone else and I don't post questions because 99% of the time a quick google of the error code or problem will turn up an answer either on here or somewhere else. "
I won't be accessing this account again so any bugs that remain will be left in. I did plan on porting this over from scratch but I found it was easier and better to work from the previously buggy 14.1.

OP I've removed the link as a precaution. The zip file will not open so maybe its a bad upload. Feel free to PM me or report the OP with a good link and we can restore this thread for you.

Can someone give me a step-by-step tutorial to root the G930TUVSACSG1 firmware?

Ive been trying to find a root tutorial for the G930TUVSACSG1 for the past month. I've tried many alts but none of them work. if someone could please comment or send me a link to root the above variant? That would greatly be appreciated. thanks.

What have you tried so far? Did you try the g930U_REV_9_ENG_ROOT.tar? I'm wondering if that will still work along with s7_Oreo_Nougat_Adb_Advanced_Root_V12.zip. I was just given this phone today and was hoping it had an older version than this "A" version. I don't know if the Samsung Experience version being 9.0 means anything at all. This is the first post I've read on this version.
After a bit of digging on Google this shows up:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-galaxy-s7/how-to/g930tuvs9csc1-root-t3948777
However i am not sure if it's up to date or not

The Eng_Boot.tar that's attached is for the g935. Will that also work for the g930, or is there a different one? Thanks

Here you go, same uploader.

In this case, the root thread linked is valid, but G930TUVSACSG1 is U10 and the engboot provided is U9. I happen to also be using SG1 (I should've checked XDA before updating, silly me).
I happen to have the U10 engineering ROM, but none of the tools to modify it like all the previous variants.

Well that's disappointing news, I've been back on stock for a while now and due to the age/usage of the phone, wanted to get rerooted to optimize what I can.
I'm on ACSI1 build though, for the curious, if anybody has any ideas or comes across a method to root, please inform me.

I just got my notification for the SI1 update. I don't have much optimism for our rooting future. I am really missing Xposed and the ad blocking capabilities. If I see or hear anything, I'll let you know.

I just rooted using this and the eng.boot.tar by BillA which is attached near the end of the thread. It might even be the same eng.boot you had. It's around 22mb in size. https://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-s7-edge/how-to/root-s7-s7edge-oreo-nougat-t3819616

I just grabbed another phone two days ago too, but I'll give it a look when I'm bored and feel like geeking out lol.
Appreciate you letting me know!

Hey, I did receive another S7 (friends give me old phones because they know I love geeking out) and rooted successfully, so I appreciate the info. Secondly, I noticed a new eng bootloader was uploaded to AFH a few weeks ago, the one we used was rev8, this one being rev10, so I'm going to go ahead and start fresh to see if its any improvement. Just thought I'd share the info, return the favor so to speak, in case you're interested in checking it out. :highfive:
I'll follow up if everything was successful.
G930x_QC_ENG_BOOT_BIN_10_U10_REV10.tar
Edit:
Successful

Thanks. I'll check it out. Did you notice any improvement, or were you even rooted long enough with the other?

Yea, I had rooted with his first few iterations of that thread, which obviously was iffy on whether it was worth having root due to overheating, battery drain, etc etc. The post you mentioned was me wanting to tinker with an extra phone that had been updated beyond what was considered exploitable. And while it's only day 2-3, and not my 'daily driver', I must say, it seems to be considerably more responsive and stable thus far, actually haven't noticed much in terms of drain, lag, or heat like before, so I can definitely recommend it. Obviously, results may very, but following procedure, I flashed stock beforehand, then rooted using instructions to a T, only swapping out the eng boot. Just had a response on the root thread stating he successfully rooted his s7 edge from the latest update (by renaming the eng boot, but honestly, an unnecessary step).
Feel free to let me know how it goes (if you try it out), and good luck! :highfive::good:

I want to give the v10 a try, but I just recently had to reroot due to trying to flash a Dolby Atmos zip that put me into an unrecoverable bootloop. I'm thinking that I'll have to reroot if I flash the eng.boot. I'm too lazy to set up my phone again so soon. Lol. When I do though, I'll let you know.

I feel ya, it becomes a chore at times, but just to update, it's been running smooth as silk for me, again, not my daily driver, but using it frequently enough that I can verify that this has been the smoothest running eng boot setup I've had (and I've had them all). I'm not usually very lucky in that regard, even with the technical know-how to optimize it to it's maximum potential, I'm fairly pleased with it. I dare say it's been comparable to running a standard oem root environment, but I'm hesitant because I'm sure thats when it'll turn around and bite me in the ass lol.

I hear ya. I haven't had any overheating issues, lag, or horrible battery drain with the v8 that I got from biila. Can't wait to try v10
