If i get a One X today can i Root it? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

I've read that the At&t one x can't be rooted. Is this true?? If it is then im gonna go with the S3.

Depends on the software.

So do the newest phones from att now come with 2.20? So pretty much useless to us xda folk?
Thanks
I am also due for an upgrade, but will just get the Galaxy if the newest one x's are unrootable.

I'd say there is a 40% ull get on on 2.20 i got mine about a week and half ago it came with 1.73 so it's all draw of the hat I'd still get this phone anyways it's a good phone even on stock

I got onef rom work and it has 2.20....so I guess no root or custom ROMS until someone figures it out.

But someone will definitely figure it out yeah ?
One x is an awesome phone. Get that. Use it for a while and then you can root it after one of the developers figures a way out

Or if AT&T ever lets the bootloader get unlocked.

Are there many devices that remain un*rootable for the duration of their usable life?

Thanks all.
Went to swappa and found a mint white HOX running 1.85 and bootloader unlocked with TWCP. Now at least I know I'll get a good usable phone

2.20 Root Status

I'm just wondering as to the status of gaining root access on the AT&T 2.20 update. I just bought my HOX via a third party, and it came with 2.20, so right now I'm SOL.
I know ETA's don't typically exist, but will creating a bounty help move this along?

Hopefully someone finds an exploit because I want to install a custom rom so badly!

There's nothing to report. My gut feeling is we will need to be granted sanctioned bootloader unlock to get root again.

sorry I'm not so good with rooting. Does that mean that we need htc to let us unlock our bootloader so we can install a rooted android os?

Yes or someone needs to find a new exploit for the new 2.20 to allow root.

Yes. At the very least we need unlocked bootloader in order to install a custom recovery so we can install root.

If you have a retail outlet around you (i.e. Best Buy, etc.), you can do what I did. Return the new phone and buy one from old shelf stock. If they received it before August then it's guaranteed to have firmware of 1.85 or older.
This is really bad!

Ok, here is my dilema:
Right now I have software number 1.93 (ICS 4.0.3), but pretty soon the OTA update for ICS 4.0.4 is going to be rolled out. From what I understood because I have an unlocked bootloader + rooted phone, the OTA update will fail unless I revert to "stock" (I am not sure here what this stock is supposed to be exactly).
1. Is it true and if yes what do I need to be able to receive the update ?
2. In case I decide I want to flash a custom rom, what should I do to be 100% sure I can revert to the original rom?
P.S. Some mod please modify the title from Tells RUU to TELUS RUU, it prevents Google from finding any posts regarding the Telus version. Thank you.

You're not supposed to revive old threads. They won't ever be locked. There's a sticky with all the RUUs so there's no reason not to find them if you're searching.

Rooting AT&T ONE X

I know I am missing something. I am a newbie, but I've been trying to root my phone for about 3 weeks. I don't know what I am doing wrong. I've gone through the most common ways I've seen. I'm currently running software version 2.20 and still trying to root, but even before I updated, I was trying and I can't figure out what I am doing wrong.
Well not to be rude, but the moment you updated to 2.20 you were pretty much screwed if you wanted to root unless it's a Rogers or the Australian HOX which it is not.

Okay,
Well I couldn't figure out what to before I updated either. So I'm screwed for ever? Or?

And for future reference, if you are interested in rooting and modding Android phones, don't ever install an OTA without researching first, and being confidant in your knowledge.
Yeah, for now you are screwed. And for how long, nobody knows.

You had a choice alright, you could have rooted/unlocked/ROM'd before it updated. Standing at the precipice, sometimes you just gotta jump. Know what I mean?

About to purchase HOX from the ATT online store...

What are the chances that the bootloader will be unlockable?
I'm assuming that the HOX I get won't come with the latest OS updates?
Last thing I want is a HOX that can't be unlocked (bootloader).
Thanks guys!

I don't want to be stuck with the bloated stock room.
Go buy it at a store. Open it up and check. V
Just got a One X from my local AT&T Store... 2.20 on all of them (or so I was told). I think it's a bit late to hope to get a 1.85 from the store, but best of luck. Now I just keep my fingers crossed for a root method for 2.20.

So just to be clear: at the moment, a HOX that comes with 2.20 cannot be rooted to flash custom roms.

I love the HOX screen but on the other hand, I can root the GS3 instantly and flash an AOSKP rom and get rid of touchwiz.
Wonder how long it will take for 2.20 to be unlocked.

Even if there is 0% chance to root 2.20, there may be exploits in newer versions.
I used to have an HTC aria, which shipped with hboot .57, but (I believe) s-off wasn't discovered until it's hboot was updated to 1.02
Moral of my story: There is almost always a way to get around security measures
But how long will it take? Who knows. I'm sure someone will make a breakthrough eventually
Dude, just get the s3. Going from a rooted phone to a locked down phone sucks balls. I can't wait to see what next year brings for phones, as I can upgrade in July. That being said, the one x is an awesome phone, even without root. Stock 2.20 is more stable than any rooted ROM I have ever run I don't have many complaints other than being locked down at all. I know I contradict my self, but it basically comes down to only one thing. You want root, get a different phone. But you will be missing out on a good phone IMO.

Not sure why anyone is suprised. Those of us with the M7 knew this month's ago. For the first day after the M7 was released you could use HTC DEV unlock then VZ made HTC lock that down for the M7.
I too hoped maybe VZ had not gotten to HTC yet for the M8 so I tried but no luck. Will need to wait for rumrunner or firewater to be updated to support the M8. It may take a while....

Yes sir. Rumrunner gave you S-Off which is "Signature Off". Once that is set, you can flash custom recoveries and then custom rom's. It took months for the team to get this working and I know it did not work on 4.4.2. I think we are in for a long wait. If you bought this hoping you could get custom rom's you might want to reconsdier. If you like the phone and can live with it stock for a few months, it's a great device.
The M7 was the best phone I ever had and I swap phones a lot.
