I was told that was location, and in the S3 we can't turn it off.as when you turn GPS on the symbol for that pops up in the left hand corner in the notification bar.

Maybe this is crazy, but I've always had that symbol when I'm connected to a 4G network
From the manual:
4G LTE Connection: Phone is active on a 4G LTE system. The arrows are colored when data is being transferred.

Click to collapse
Try connecting to a WiFi network - if the 4G indicator does not go away in that case, something is odd.

I've always had that since I bought the phone. If you change Google location service to off it changes the symbol slightly. Has something to do with some location crap.

Never had that constant symbol on mine. Your GPS signal will not stay on the whole time, only comes on when looking for a connection and as someone else mentioned it is in the left corner. I do turn off the Verizon locator option so not sure if that has anything to do with it.

thats the e911 icon and i believe its removed on most custom roms.
https://vzwsupport.jive-mobile.com/#jive-discussion?content=/api/core/v2/discussions/237187

what did you get fixed on it from them? i still need to fix my charge port...

Oh, whoops - I didn't read your post correctly, the "before" 4G didn't register in my brain, sorry.
From the manual, that symbol is:
GPS Location Active: One or more GPS location services are active.
. . .
Location services
Location services control your device's use of GPS signals. Some apps may require one or more location services be turned On for full app functionality. GPS signals may be affected by your surroundings, including:
• Buildings
• Tunnels or underground structures
• Weather conditions
• High-voltage or electromagnetic fields
• Tinted windows
Important! Verizon Wireless values your privacy. Because of this, your phone is defaulted to only acquire your location when you dial 911. To use Location-Based Services, you must first enable location services on your phone.
E911
E911 location service is standard on all mobile phones, to allow sharing of your GPS location with emergency personnel when you make a call to emergency services (such as 911). This setting is not configurable.
Click to collapse
The E911 symbol is the primary graphic, the radio waves next to it implies that other location services are also active.
Go to Settings -> Location Services and check/uncheck to see what happens with that symbol. Mine is on constantly and I have the Standalone + Google locations services checked. If you uncheck all location options, the E911 symbol will remain.
This is normal operations.

There are no GPS issues with the Charge like there were with the early Galaxy S phones. If you are having GPS issues, you may have a defective phone.

agreed, even with a custom rom humble 1.25 I think. My GPS compared to my old captivate w custom which is way better than stock.... side by side today in LA was night and day difference in favor of the Charge.
Download "FasterFix" from the market
find a nice server in your area or use a custom one like supl.google.com
If you're in Texas, use "tick.uh.edu" you will get a lock almost instantly
after you make the changes, reboot your phone
The GPS on the charge works, but it still sucks. Even in my car I have to damn near hold it out the window to get a lock. Never had this issue with an HTC or Motorola which could easily get a GPS lock inside a building.
It works, but it could (should) be better.
fasterfix freezes my phone
After you have taken the latest ota make sure you wipe data. There was a gps problem up until the ee4 update. The first lock might take a little while but after that it should be almost instant outdoors.

well if you're trying to get better GPS and you can't use fasterfix (still have to be rooted to try this)

i tried GPS Status (used the app when i had my fascinate and it worked great) and it's pretty much immediate fix. Then i can go to gnav it pinpoints me pretty well.. it's a few meters off. I think before i flashed gb it was more accurate but a little slower to fix.

EF02 and EG22 GPS Error Fix

I had a problem with the GPS on EF02 and EG22 ROMS in that my GPS would work but would eventually result in a "searching for gps" message at the bottom of the navigator even though my gps was turned on. Today I haven't experienced that problem thanks to the program:
GPS Aids Free - beta (found in Google Market)
Just run the program and allow it to download the proper information regarding your phone...make sure you get passing "green" boxes to show you that each task was completed successfully. Now report back and let me know if this fixed you too.

I'm locked in 5 sats today with GPS status..
this actually worked
I'm on the deodexed EG22 leak, rooted and with chris41g's kernel. My GPS was taking a while to get a lock. Things like FourSquare would take a while to "wake up" and realize my location had changed from one place to another. I'd be in City B and when I would go to check-in, it would still think I was in City A.
Anyways, after downloading and running GPS Aids, the GPS gets a fix much faster for me!

No.
Settings -> Display -> Horizontal calibration
Since your compass is reversed you may need to do the calibration upside down. In other words, when you push the calibrate button, be holding the phone a level as possible with the screen facing down on the underside of a table or desk.

The best app for turning on/off your data or the radio is "LTE On/Off" from the market.
If you're referring to just your mobile data, it would depend on your ROM. Need the specs.
I was looking for this app to turn on/off only data, but allow phone calls and texting.
Lets see, from what I can gather, and he didn't say much during it, is that I have gingerbread, and I have the omfgb rom currently. Does this help?
Thank you

I'm not on an AOSP ROM. I'm on a Sense based ROM but from what I gather, JuiceDefender would automatically turn off your mobile data when the screen is off.
I don't use it so I can't personally vouch for it but that's what I found via Google.com
Well now I downloaded that app and I think I picked the wrong option and now I can't get 4g, and I deleted the app thinking that would fix it but I'm still not seeing 4g at the top. I'm seeing bars, but not 4g.

You'll have to play with the options.
If you're not seeing 4G, 3G or 1X in the top bar, then your mobile data is off.
You'll be able to receive phone calls/texts but no data.

I would not be the expert on that app. Here's the link to the OMFGB thread.
Once you get over 10 posts or so, you can post in there and ask them.
They're the experts on that AOSP ROM.

On another note, I was able to find the location in settings and put my "preferred" back to CDMA + lte/evdo (or something like that.) After a reboot, the 4g is back.
I'll still hunt for help on the lte on/off app.
Thanks again

[Guide] [Discussion] (Possible) battery savings by disabling unused network bands.

WARNING: I DON'T TAKE ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY DAMAGES THAT MAY OCCUR TO YOUR PHONE/ SIMS/SD CARDS OR ANY OTHER ACCESSORIES OR DEVICES. DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK.
As the title suggests this is a guide to disable certain network bands (GSM/WCDMA/CDMA/LTE) that are not supported by your carrier. Theoretically it should help save battery as the phone won't search for those bands anymore. I'm currently testing this myself and will provide feedback too. The more users try this the better as more feedback will provide better insight to how much battery saving we can get by doing this (if any).
Pre-requisites:
1. The phone needs to be rooted.
2. A free app called Network signal Guru from play store. Link below :
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.qtrun.QuickTest
3. The bands that your carrier supports. Use Google/ wiki to search for your carrier and all the bands it supports.
Here it goes :
1. Install network signal guru and give it SU permissions.
2. The app will check for compatibility and download some "online configurations".
3. After the app opens click on the menu and select lock bands.
4. Click on the corresponding network and and UNTICK the bands that you found are NOT supported by your carrier. You might get a message saying that this might force the phone into a power cycle. Ignore it or just stop if you're "not interested now". ?
5. Do this for all the network types.
6. The phone might reconnect to the carrier (you'll notice by network icon in the status bar )
7. Exit the app if you want as these settings still stick if the app is not running.
That's it. You've successfully disabled the bands that you found are not supported by your carrier.
Currently I've tested it on MIUI 9.4.18 and should work on any ROM/ kernel as long as you do it right.
Notes:
1. The settings are removed after a reboot.
2. You might have extra options in the bands if you're using two carriers i.e dual SIM . The secondary carrier is marked by "extended" and the primary by "primary". Select the bands accordingly.
3. The LTE bands look to be "shared" by both the SIMs. So just select the bands of both the carriers if you're using LTE on both.
4. Try to give as much feedback as possible.
Kinda risky cause we have different network band usage and maybe "I'm in Philippines" I might screw something up but hey, I can restore it back. Worth a try I guess, thanks for the info.

It isn't risky at all. I've been doing this on many phones since a long time and never had any problem (unless you're really really unlucky ?.
If you're worried about "power cycle", it just means that the phone will restart and nothing else.

The phone by default connects to the WiFi with better signal which more often will be the 2.4g. I see that you can't disable 2.4g on the router. I remember an app called smart WiFi selector and another app called WiFi 5 that can help you. Google them.

The app needs /Dev/diag to communicate with the modem and some kernels disable it. That's why it won't work on those kernels and I can't do anything about. You can ask the Dev of the kernel to include it.
