[Guide] [Discussion] (Possible) battery savings by disabling unused network bands. - Xiaomi Poco F1 Guides, News, & Discussion

WARNING: I DON'T TAKE ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY DAMAGES THAT MAY OCCUR TO YOUR PHONE/ SIMS/SD CARDS OR ANY OTHER ACCESSORIES OR DEVICES. DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK.
As the title suggests this is a guide to disable certain network bands (GSM/WCDMA/CDMA/LTE) that are not supported by your carrier. Theoretically it should help save battery as the phone won't search for those bands anymore. I'm currently testing this myself and will provide feedback too. The more users try this the better as more feedback will provide better insight to how much battery saving we can get by doing this (if any).
Pre-requisites:
1. The phone needs to be rooted.
2. A free app called Network signal Guru from play store. Link below :
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.qtrun.QuickTest
3. The bands that your carrier supports. Use Google/ wiki to search for your carrier and all the bands it supports.
Here it goes :
1. Install network signal guru and give it SU permissions.
2. The app will check for compatibility and download some "online configurations".
3. After the app opens click on the menu and select lock bands.
4. Click on the corresponding network and and UNTICK the bands that you found are NOT supported by your carrier. You might get a message saying that this might force the phone into a power cycle. Ignore it or just stop if you're "not interested now". ?
5. Do this for all the network types.
6. The phone might reconnect to the carrier (you'll notice by network icon in the status bar )
7. Exit the app if you want as these settings still stick if the app is not running.
That's it. You've successfully disabled the bands that you found are not supported by your carrier.
Currently I've tested it on MIUI 9.4.18 and should work on any ROM/ kernel as long as you do it right.
Notes:
1. The settings are removed after a reboot.
2. You might have extra options in the bands if you're using two carriers i.e dual SIM . The secondary carrier is marked by "extended" and the primary by "primary". Select the bands accordingly.
3. The LTE bands look to be "shared" by both the SIMs. So just select the bands of both the carriers if you're using LTE on both.
4. Try to give as much feedback as possible.

Kinda risky cause we have different network band usage and maybe "I'm in Philippines" I might screw something up but hey, I can restore it back. Worth a try I guess, thanks for the info.

It isn't risky at all. I've been doing this on many phones since a long time and never had any problem (unless you're really really unlucky ?.
If you're worried about "power cycle", it just means that the phone will restart and nothing else.
Edited.

Could you post a maybe timelime of your battery usage? Are you still using it on stock ROM?

Yep. Using it on MIUI EU 9.4.18.
I'll post a full battery timeline when I go through a full battery cycle.

The phone by default connects to the WiFi with better signal which more often will be the 2.4g. I see that you can't disable 2.4g on the router. I remember an app called smart WiFi selector and another app called WiFi 5 that can help you. Google them.

I don't think that you're using the same app as me. I've updated the op with the official play store link of the said app. Download from there.

The app needs /Dev/diag to communicate with the modem and some kernels disable it. That's why it won't work on those kernels and I can't do anything about. You can ask the Dev of the kernel to include it.

Radio/Transmission Power Tweaker

I am a recent convert from Windows Mobile to Android, and have been having problems with my new HTC Incredible maintaining a solid 3G connection. Apparently, part of the problem is holding the phone in one's hand has a direct effect on signal strength. I was wondering if there were any applications that could let me boost the power of the phone radio to overcome these problems.

Never heard of anything like that.. good luck
*228 option 2. That will update your PRL (product roaming list). Give that a shot. Only takes a minute to do.
Also ##33284# opens debug and will give you the signal db.

it works across all networks in Canada/USA, it shows you if you are in your home network or not
but in WIND it does even a step further they incorporated a quick menu to check your usage, and refill your account as in some other european & south america countries
A lot of the ones in the wiki/faq for other Galaxy S type phones work. I haven't ran through them all to test, though.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S_Series#Secret_Codes
there are many of the codes for SGS that doesn't work on the SNS
i've not tried them all yet, just too many
i've only tried a few that i frequently used on the SGS
Does the one on the first post allow me to check the color, eg for dead pixels, I know *#0*# is for most Samsung, does this work for the sns, I'm about to buy one so I need to check it.
Thanks

HI,
I got a Nexus S and it is on the same Baseband and kernel version. These commands dont work!!
Also strange thing is, I am unable to calls or send SMSs and the GSM service says its Out of Service. BUT GPRS services work and I am able to browse the internet. I have absolutely no idea how this is possible.
ANy suggestions? My guess is the Service Domain in the Service mode is set to CS only. Need to change this to CS+PS. Since the USSD command (*#0011#) doesnt work, not sure what to do.
Please suggest.

Rooted, Data widget won't let me turn off 4g now

My buddy rooted my phone tonight, I still have to read up on the whole process, as I'm clueless to most of it.
I tried to download the Data Widget so my battery life won't go down the toilet. Now it says it can't alter data when I try to turn it on. How can this issue be resolved?
Thank you

The best app for turning on/off your data or the radio is "LTE On/Off" from the market.
If you're referring to just your mobile data, it would depend on your ROM. Need the specs.
I was looking for this app to turn on/off only data, but allow phone calls and texting.
Lets see, from what I can gather, and he didn't say much during it, is that I have gingerbread, and I have the omfgb rom currently. Does this help?
Thank you

I'm not on an AOSP ROM. I'm on a Sense based ROM but from what I gather, JuiceDefender would automatically turn off your mobile data when the screen is off.
I don't use it so I can't personally vouch for it but that's what I found via Google.com
Well now I downloaded that app and I think I picked the wrong option and now I can't get 4g, and I deleted the app thinking that would fix it but I'm still not seeing 4g at the top. I'm seeing bars, but not 4g.

You'll have to play with the options.
If you're not seeing 4G, 3G or 1X in the top bar, then your mobile data is off.
You'll be able to receive phone calls/texts but no data.
Well I went to setting and wireless/networks but there is nothing there. Where would I find these settings?

I would not be the expert on that app. Here's the link to the OMFGB thread.
Once you get over 10 posts or so, you can post in there and ask them.
They're the experts on that AOSP ROM.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1132818
Thank you, that is much appreciated.
On another note, I was able to find the location in settings and put my "preferred" back to CDMA + lte/evdo (or something like that.) After a reboot, the 4g is back.
I'll still hunt for help on the lte on/off app.
Thanks again

Unable to authenticate with 5 Ghz network

I have both a galaxy S4 I9505 (4.2.2) and a note 10.1 (4.1.2)
My wireless AP is a BT HomeHub 4, providing both a 2.4 Ghz network & 5 Ghz network. They use seperate SSIDs and are both 802.11n
The S4 (and visitors laptops, macs, iphones etc) have no trouble connecting to the 5Ghz network (AES WPA2).
The note 10.1 can see the network, but an attempt to connect results in 'Authentication Error Occurred'. If I forget and reconfigure the network it appears to make no difference.
I am loathe to do a full reset just to fix this issue (if it does).
The same hub's 2.4 Ghz network, and access to another 2.4 GHz AP works just fine - and is plenty good enough.. just annoying ....
The firmware is currently CMH2 (germany) though the unit was retail UK when shipped -- it's just that the generic UK firmware was pretty old. The previous version of the firmwares I've used I believe had the same issue.
No sign of an official 4.2.x yet let along a 4.3.x - a shame...
Any ideas?

Full resets never fix issues like this, as they're mostly hardware issues. Which 5GHz frequency are you broadcasting? How long is your passphrase?
How old is your AP? Is it "real N" or one of the prerelease N standards?
@planetf1 Take a look at this app, see if it helps you.

Nice- thanks for this! I've always wanted something that could do that.
I find setting up a phone or tablet to a router you are best to delete security settings from the router . Setup the wifi connection on your product once working setup security .
My firmware is old and i have no problem with 5Ghz .

Question Notifications not working

So this was happening with my 6 Pro, also, so when the 7 Pro came out I traded up, but it's happening on the 7 as well.
Let me start off by saying I am on Wifi probably 95% So I get "some" notifications, but as soon as I switch to cell, a bunch of new notifications come through, has anyone seen this or know how to fix it?
Are you using any ad blocking? I've been having some issues with my pixel that I never had before (my first Google device).

Check whether it's detecting your wifi network as a metered connection, or change it from autodetect to "treat as unmetered" and see if it makes a difference...?
