EF02 and EG22 GPS Error Fix - Epic 4G Android Development

I had a problem with the GPS on EF02 and EG22 ROMS in that my GPS would work but would eventually result in a "searching for gps" message at the bottom of the navigator even though my gps was turned on. Today I haven't experienced that problem thanks to the program:
GPS Aids Free - beta (found in Google Market)
Just run the program and allow it to download the proper information regarding your phone...make sure you get passing "green" boxes to show you that each task was completed successfully. Now report back and let me know if this fixed you too.

Wrong section, but regardless; does this fix the problem with only locking on to ~40% of satellites?

Sorry....I just posted this under development because it regarded developer releases.....not sure on how many are used but this seems to fix problem where gps gets into locked state and stops working

XTRA data won't download no matter what I do.

I cant get it to download the LTO or other one data. I have root.

After trying it I can say it doesn't appear to. Still only locking onto 3/7 sats here.

Same here. However the developer mentions that you only need one or the other (LTO or XTRA).

The 4 satellite limitation appears to be a GB leak issue and won't be overcome until official release and source code.

I'm locked in 5 sats today with GPS status..

this actually worked
I'm on the deodexed EG22 leak, rooted and with chris41g's kernel. My GPS was taking a while to get a lock. Things like FourSquare would take a while to "wake up" and realize my location had changed from one place to another. I'd be in City B and when I would go to check-in, it would still think I was in City A.
Anyways, after downloading and running GPS Aids, the GPS gets a fix much faster for me!

not sure if this is a related problem, but ive noticed that my compass reads my direction backwards... ie: east is west, north is south... anyone else encounter this?

This one's been a big help. It's only temporary, but if I run it every day or two my GPS is actually mostly usable.

No.
Settings -> Display -> Horizontal calibration
Since your compass is reversed you may need to do the calibration upside down. In other words, when you push the calibrate button, be holding the phone a level as possible with the screen facing down on the underside of a table or desk.

[Q] Compass stopped working

I just got my Nexus S yesterday and already the compass has stopped working. My phone got stuck in landscape mode so I turned it off and back on and now the compass doesn't work in Google Maps. I read about quite a few people having the landscape issue after installing Google Sky map, which I do have installed but everyone said resetting the device fixes everything. Any idea's on what I can try to get my compass working again?

turn it over and give it a couple good smacks on the backside. seriously. they can get stuck. also, are you using a case with a magnetic clip? they can mess with the compass.
It's a digital compass. They don't have any moving parts like a conventional compass so they can't get stuck. And no, I don't have it on a magnetic clip.

What do you mean "What about an analog compass?" I said I already tried rebooting in my first post. And yes I know I can make my own compass, what does that have to do with anything?
I just tried doing a factory data reset and that didn't help. Then I installed some lame compass app that allowed me to calibrate it and it appears to be "working" now. It's completely inaccurate and jumps around like crazy but it does something at least. Is that normal or should I get my device replaced?
If you've done all of that I would just replace it. Bbm have been great with my own issues with the phone, show them the problem and if you are in your 30 day window, they should switch you out a new one. Careful though, seems to me once you go the exchange route, it gets addictive. Got mine out on warranty as I type. Another thing, if you haven't already, get the black tie insurance, at least for the first six months or so. Its saving me now and there's no deductible. The phone is also a rapid exchange so it will be back to you new in 3 to 5 biz days.

You might try updating to 2.3.2....I think I read somewhere where that helped the compass problem with some apps. Couldn't hurt I wouldn't think either way.

Does anyone have the link to the thread or file for fixing the GPS lock issue with the Mes? My GPS will not get a lock at all. I thought there was a flashable CWR file to resolve this. Any help is appreciated.

You might also try using something like GPS Status in the Market to clear your GPS cache (in that program, Tools -> Manage A-GPS state -> Reset). That's worked for me in the past.
I had this issue a while back and what fixed it for me was setting>applications>manage applications>maps>clear data. This is probably the same as using the app mentioned but it worked worked for me. Anyway. FWIW
Tap-a-Talked.
Thanks for the link. Well just tried that fix and still nothing. My Mes doesn't even see one satellite. I am using the GPA Data app for tacking.

My Screen keeps turning on by itself!

when i have my phone locked and im not even touching it, every few minutes the screen will turn on and sit there for around 30 seconds then will turn back on a few mins later, this is very annoying and im sure uses a ton of battery over the course of a day, im running leedroid 3.1.2 and it used to do it on 3.1.1 so idk if its rom related

Check for any stray apps. Install "Battery history for GB" app from market and check for apps that are using "wake lock" excessively.
I had a similar problem with my inspire. It seemed to be caused by a faulty usb cable. After I plugged my phone into my car charger it started working fine.
I have an Inspire 4G with the same problem. I doubt that it is an app, because I changed the rom 3 times so far. And with every one of them, the problem persists. Anyway, i'm trying the Battery log now.

Hey I've been having the same issue, my SGS I9000 international version keeps turning the screen on by itself randomly, I've flashed my phone back to stock Eclair 2.1 and then I went to Froyo, Cyannogen mode 7, ICS rom which I forgot the name of it, and then I'm running on the new value pack now which is 2.3.6XXJW4 however nothing has solved this damn problem, my screen keeps turning on and it's killing my battery, help please..!! I've tried to see if the sensor is not working, however I believe it's something else.. please let me know if someone has fix for this..!
I'm running LeeDroid v5.1.1 and haven't experienced this yet. I've been running it close to 2 weeks now with no real issues. Just an occasional lag spike on wake up.

agreed, even with a custom rom humble 1.25 I think. My GPS compared to my old captivate w custom which is way better than stock.... side by side today in LA was night and day difference in favor of the Charge.
Download "FasterFix" from the market
find a nice server in your area or use a custom one like supl.google.com
If you're in Texas, use "tick.uh.edu" you will get a lock almost instantly
after you make the changes, reboot your phone
The GPS on the charge works, but it still sucks. Even in my car I have to damn near hold it out the window to get a lock. Never had this issue with an HTC or Motorola which could easily get a GPS lock inside a building.
It works, but it could (should) be better.
fasterfix freezes my phone
After you have taken the latest ota make sure you wipe data. There was a gps problem up until the ee4 update. The first lock might take a little while but after that it should be almost instant outdoors.

well if you're trying to get better GPS and you can't use fasterfix (still have to be rooted to try this)

with root explorer long click and hit "open in text editor"
change port to 7276
server is "supl.google.com" (DO NOT PUT WWW)
Sometimes it can help to change from STANDALONE mode to "MSBASED"
hit menu, save and exit (Don't worry if you're using Root explorer it will automatically create a backup)

i tried GPS Status (used the app when i had my fascinate and it worked great) and it's pretty much immediate fix. Then i can go to gnav it pinpoints me pretty well.. it's a few meters off. I think before i flashed gb it was more accurate but a little slower to fix.

Issues with GPS.. grrr..

I have a VZ GSIII and I love this phone more than my girl friend but Im very frustrated with the issue of my GPS not working. In Waze it shows "Cant locate GPS" and in google maps the same. I keep seeing the GPS icon at the top of my toolbar constantly searching. Regardless if the app is open or not (not working in the background).
I have tried now over 6 Rom's and having the same issue. Does any one have a solution? A good ROM or a fix?
I have tried so many things and they didn't work.
Try running the app gps fix from market...if that dont work you may have a hardware issue. My gps works flawless on most roms i have tried

Few questions, Was it always a problem? Was it just with JB ROMs or both ICS and JB ROMs? If it was when you switch to JB ROMs, typically a fix is to revert to an ICS ROM, get a GPS lock, and switch back to a JB ROM. But it could be a hardware issue too, try the GPS fix app like above poster said too before you through all the trouble, forgotten about that

Which ROM are you currently on?
Sent from my Secret Base in Outer Space
I had that exact problem and when I used map quest it could locate me right away when Maps kept timing out and saying couldn't locate. What I did was go under settings and then accounts and select my gmail account and then location services and turn it on. For some odd reason it would never turn on until I did the above. Also if your on a different ROM instead of stock you need to go into location and select which GPS antennae to use which will always be internal. I got my GPS to work after that but it still took a long time to lock on my locations so I just finally Odined back to VRALHD and started over again and went through the unlocking steps and everything again and flashed a ROM. I still had to go into location services under my gmail account and turn it on but it locks almost immediately now.
Edit:
Also you may want to d/l GPS Test from the Play Store and step outside and see how many satellites your picking up and it can even clear and update your AGPS.

No problem, that's what these forums are for. and what ROM did you have before that? And I believe RLS6 is up already. So you can try flashing up to that to see if it fixes the problem, if not like I said before, I suggest you flash to a ICS ROM not permanently but just so you can grab a GPS lock, just make a nandroid of your current ROM so you can flash right back to it.

What I mean is when you flash to an ICS ROM, just go into the maps app it any app that requires a GPS lock and get a lock, if for some reason you can't get a lock, it could be your GPS died out which is possible. Also make sure you have everything checked in location sdevices when you go to do that.
