[Q] Compass stopped working - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got my Nexus S yesterday and already the compass has stopped working. My phone got stuck in landscape mode so I turned it off and back on and now the compass doesn't work in Google Maps. I read about quite a few people having the landscape issue after installing Google Sky map, which I do have installed but everyone said resetting the device fixes everything. Any idea's on what I can try to get my compass working again?

turn it over and give it a couple good smacks on the backside. seriously. they can get stuck. also, are you using a case with a magnetic clip? they can mess with the compass.

It's a digital compass. They don't have any moving parts like a conventional compass so they can't get stuck. And no, I don't have it on a magnetic clip.

What about an analog compass? Or maybe a reboot.btw did you know that you can make a compass on your own?

What do you mean "What about an analog compass?" I said I already tried rebooting in my first post. And yes I know I can make my own compass, what does that have to do with anything?
I just tried doing a factory data reset and that didn't help. Then I installed some lame compass app that allowed me to calibrate it and it appears to be "working" now. It's completely inaccurate and jumps around like crazy but it does something at least. Is that normal or should I get my device replaced?

If you've done all of that I would just replace it. Bbm have been great with my own issues with the phone, show them the problem and if you are in your 30 day window, they should switch you out a new one. Careful though, seems to me once you go the exchange route, it gets addictive. Got mine out on warranty as I type. Another thing, if you haven't already, get the black tie insurance, at least for the first six months or so. Its saving me now and there's no deductible. The phone is also a rapid exchange so it will be back to you new in 3 to 5 biz days.

You can check the raw magnetometer status with the app, "Phone Tester".

Come on man, it was just a joke
Seriously now, why don't you contact Google for support?
If you want a decent compass to properly calibrate the sensors.and use I suggest this https://catch.com/home/mobile-apps-2/compass/ but I'm not sure if it works for gingerbread

You might try updating to 2.3.2....I think I read somewhere where that helped the compass problem with some apps. Couldn't hurt I wouldn't think either way.

[Q] sensation camera app crashing?

Having done a search & a bit of a google it seems the default HTC camera is prone to crashing on other devices, it's happening on my new UK voda sensation.
The camera works for a few minutes, then crashes to a black screen. If I clicked it again the screen brightens but the camera app does not run. A reboot seemed to fix this the first few times, now even after a reboot the camera app will not run.
Anybody got any ideas on how to fix this, if at all?
Same, its starting to get really annoying!

Strange, I know a lot of people experience this issue but the camera app has never crashed on me even once. It's very stable from what I can see. I've taken lots of photos and 1080p videos too.

Is geotagging an option? Do you have it turned on? If so, try turning it off. Just a thought.

Nice one! That seems to have done the trick, certainly hasn't crashed again since turning off geotagging. Thanks for the good tip.
I hope this phone gets unlocked soon, the voda rom is pretty good so far but I doesn't feel like half the phone it could be with the right tweaking and optimisation.

Cool! Just a wild guess. I'll try to remember this if I have the problem.
Actually that brings up another possible issue. Have you used GPS much? I'd be interested if that's working ok. Good GPS is one of my key requirements. Thanks.

I've got geotagging turned off, have had all along. Looks like there's a temporary fix then!
I haven't used GPS much. I have a little and it does work, but I will try to test it a bit this week, see how long the signal holds up on a journey, that sort of thing.
I'll let you know ;o)

EF02 and EG22 GPS Error Fix

I had a problem with the GPS on EF02 and EG22 ROMS in that my GPS would work but would eventually result in a "searching for gps" message at the bottom of the navigator even though my gps was turned on. Today I haven't experienced that problem thanks to the program:
GPS Aids Free - beta (found in Google Market)
Just run the program and allow it to download the proper information regarding your phone...make sure you get passing "green" boxes to show you that each task was completed successfully. Now report back and let me know if this fixed you too.

Wrong section, but regardless; does this fix the problem with only locking on to ~40% of satellites?
Sorry....I just posted this under development because it regarded developer releases.....not sure on how many are used but this seems to fix problem where gps gets into locked state and stops working

XTRA data won't download no matter what I do.
I cant get it to download the LTO or other one data. I have root.

After trying it I can say it doesn't appear to. Still only locking onto 3/7 sats here.

Same here. However the developer mentions that you only need one or the other (LTO or XTRA).
The 4 satellite limitation appears to be a GB leak issue and won't be overcome until official release and source code.

I'm locked in 5 sats today with GPS status..
this actually worked
I'm on the deodexed EG22 leak, rooted and with chris41g's kernel. My GPS was taking a while to get a lock. Things like FourSquare would take a while to "wake up" and realize my location had changed from one place to another. I'd be in City B and when I would go to check-in, it would still think I was in City A.
Anyways, after downloading and running GPS Aids, the GPS gets a fix much faster for me!
not sure if this is a related problem, but ive noticed that my compass reads my direction backwards... ie: east is west, north is south... anyone else encounter this?

tried this, now I have NO gps whatsoever.
How do I set it back, this app broke my gps entirely

This one's been a big help. It's only temporary, but if I run it every day or two my GPS is actually mostly usable.

No.
Settings -> Display -> Horizontal calibration
Since your compass is reversed you may need to do the calibration upside down. In other words, when you push the calibrate button, be holding the phone a level as possible with the screen facing down on the underside of a table or desk.

My Nexus 5 Compass Isn't Working At All

Hi! I got a Nexus 5 from Best Buy and i'm pretty satisfied with it. Except for the compass, it doesnt move at all. I tried google maps, smart tools, etc. Even in phone tester it says waiting for data. I tried a factory reset but still the same. I dont know what to try. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

I just tried Smart Tools compass and it's working for me. I would download and try GPS test to make sure the sensors are working, and make sure you have the current version of smart tools. Also, my phone is rooted (stock), although I don't know if that matters.
Just checking.. Magnetic flip case?
This caught me out once.. Almost rma'd

Thanks! Guess its broken then. I cant take it to best buy since im now in Argentina. My guess is it was damaged in the metal detector in the airport.

[Q] Device only location setting not working?

When I turn on my location setting with high accuracy the compass and location move very erratically but when I turn on device only I can't get a lock, it will keep stating it's waiting for location.
Does this mean the GPS on my phone is borked?
Maybe.
You're not using any GPS /location xposed modules are you?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Could be a loose connection to the antenna. Pinch the upper left portion of the phone hard and that should re-seat the antenna.
Thanks, I pinched the corner like you said and it now works but it doesn't give me an accurate reading.
The compass is pointing in the wrong direction and the marker still jumps about.
Is it RMA time?
There are two choices. Rma it or take it apart and use some card stock to pad the GPS antenna so it makes full contact. Call google and RMA it.
Can I ask why my sons iPad mini that doesn't have gps pinpoints my position exactly and also with the compass pointing in the right direction on google maps yet my N5 falters?
Thanks but I'm just trying to understand if it's hardware or software.

If to fix it, you had to physically pinch the device, its obviously hardware.

I have sent it back so hopefully they can replicate the issue on their end and replace.
The phone I returned was perfect apart from the GPS so knowing my luck I'll get one with dead pixels or something else!
Guess what I have the same issue on both of my devices ie Nexus 7 and Nexus 5. And even on my Mi3. When I change to device only it keeps on showing me waiting for location. On high accuracy it shows the location.
Looks like more a software or android issue rather than hardware since all the devices cant have same hardware issue.

Nope nothing for location
It is a frustrating issue but I was also getting a really imprecise GPS lock also. The compass would sometimes point me in the wrong direction and it would also stutter as I drove.
If the replacement has the same issue I can see myself going for the iphone 6 as I really wanted to jump over to android after the L preview, it seems so much more than ios7 and 8.
It seems to keep the price down the nexus devices all have issues regarding build quality.

Ah OK. I only mentioned because I had a module to disable the location consent pop-up and it broke GPS for me.

Two strange Android problems

I recently replaced the logic board in my Verizon galaxy note II and have two strange problems. First, when I turn on the camera and tap the settings gear, the menu displays upside down. It also displays the image taken upside down.. I can work around this. It's weird but not a big deal. The second problem is the big one. Although everything seems to work fine as far as GPS and other sensors, when I attempt to use Google Sky map, the app loads fine but doesn't give me a real time view. Nothing moves when pointed at the sky. This is not only on Sky Map, but any app like that. I've calibrated the compass and found a couple of apps for calibrating the other sensors, but no change. Any ideas from anyone?

You need to remap your hardware, the motherboard you used must have been from a slightly different variant of Note 2, one with a different rotation orientation (up on yours is down on the motherboard you used).
Same goes for your GPS, the GPS on Verizon Note 2 must be different somehow on the variant that your motherboard came from.

It's configuring the software to match how your hardware sensors are configured, in other words, make up=up and down=down.

You mean since I'm not spoonfeeding you the answer. You didn't ask "how", you asked "what is it?".
That's because it requires knowledge of the note 2 system, I'm not familiar with note 2 but my experience with other devices tells me that your hardware isn't mapped correctly because its upside down.
You'll have to get help from note 2 users that are familiar with your software/hardware.

I'm sorry. I figured since I didn't know what hardware mapping was, it would be obvious to you that I wouldn't know how to do it either. But I thank you for letting me know what to look for.
