So I need to replace my phone... - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Sadly I shattered my X's screen :crying: and I'm going to get it replaced with my insurance, they send me the new phone and I send them the broken one back. As far as I can tell there's no way I can check or have them check that the phone's still on 1.85 and I absolutely can't live without root. Any ideas to help me out? (AT&T One X)

you may be able to this.. idk it was sure if you need root but maybe something along this line. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671135
beamed from the XL

If it comes with 2.20 you are toast. There is no known root or BL unlock for phones that come with 2.20. Its hit or miss what you will get.

Yeah I think I'm going to call AT&T today and see if there's any way we could work something out. Hopefully since one of the reps at my local store is actually knowledgeable when it comes to rooting and modding etc. he can help me out.

Your replacement will come from asurian. If you get a refurb find a flaw with it and they will send you a brand new one which will likely not have 2.20.

Maybe you could swap screens then if you get a replacement that you can't root.

I dropped my current phone a few days before the screen shattered and it's just been buggy as hell, it's barely been usable since. Plus I got a defective model in the first place with the WiFi issue which at this point is getting to be the most annoying thing ever. I guess I shouldn't have waited to get a replacement, I was too afraid I'd get a new one with the update but now it seems like it's going to be a very slim chance of getting one without the update

I just got a refurb from AT&T today with 2.20 on it already.
Sending it back. Guess I'll live with some stuck pixels and root, I have 90 days to decide how much it bothers me.
Unless an exploit is found for 2.20...

Just realized how lucky I am... My phone dropped from 3 stories into wood... Amazingly I have no issues, just a slightly blue tint on a pinkie sized part of the screen only visible when there's a Grey background and a scratch on the top corner of the chassis. Of course it probably helped I had a zagg screen protector which is scratched slightly at the top.

I filed the claim tonight and should get the NEW phone, not a refurb, tomorrow or Wednesday. Praying it'll come with 1.85...

Capacitive Button LEDs Shot

So, my ATT One X is acting funny. The LEDs behind the capacitive keys only work for the back button. This is not a ROM/firmware issue, as I use my own ROMs and think I have a fairly good idea of what would cause that to happen if it were. Anyway, I got it kind of wet (was in my wader pocket fly fishing and it got half submerged for half a second), so that may be/likely is it.
So, my questions are: (1) has anyone else had this happen without dunking it in water for a half a second (guessing no), and (2) more importantly, what has been people's experience with the ATT's insurance? Will they give me a hard time if I tell them it was the water dunk, or will they still check whether it's rooted/unlocked, etc? I can get it back to it's factory state, but don't want to bother. Any input is greatly appreciated, as I am using my International One X and it is really laggy in comparison, even with custom ROMs. Thanks!
Steve
If you have insurance they will replace it no matter what you did to it, if you try to get it replaced/repaired under warranty it is likely that they will want to make sure that it is not due to water damage. But you may get lucky. Good luck

I have had no problem using warranty for stuff like that in the fast with my atrix. I returned it with cm7 anddigitizer not working and still had no questions asked about warranty. Insurance I have used once after I broke my blackberry curve when it came out a few years ago. My HOX I went with best buy for insurance purpose

My home button goes in and out, without being dropped or dunked in water. I think it's a build defect. When mine goes out, squeezing that part of the phone causes it to flicker and come back on, so I think the solder is just shot.
Yes at&t will.replace it...by the way..since i had my original one x replace a week ago..be sure to check the lower part of the phone where the capacitive buttons are..the first and second one that they gave me made a squeaking sound..if you press it..but the 3rd one that they handed me feels solid..different build quality i guess

AHHH!! I love This Phone But

I really love this phone but the build quality that HTC use to be SOOO well known for seems to have gone out the window. I bought the AT&T One X when it first came out and had to have it replaced atleast 3 different times before my 30 days were up due to a number of different issues. The last one I got I've had for probably 2 months now and everything had been great up until a couple days ago. About a quarter of the way up the screen from the bottom does not recognize touch. If I use an app or something to draw a line down the screen, when I get to that spot it leaves a blank area and then the line starts again when I get past that area. One whole row on the keyboard I can't use any of the letters and atleast one of those letters is part of my gmail address so I can't enter it. When I'm scrolling in say the settings menu, the screen will be real jittery if my finger goes into the area where it's dead at or it will think I'm pressing instead of scrolling and randomly open up menus or apps. I do have insurance on the phone but I know it's not something they will swap in store since I'm past my 30 days so it will have to probably have to be sent for repair and I can almost guarantee they will update it to the latest release so I won't be able to root or anything else. Just curious if anyone else has had issues with the touch screen going out on there One X?
Sucks sorry to hear about your phone... Just terrible bad luck
I've had mine from day one of release and have had no issues what so ever... I'm sorry your having such bad luck with yours

Ya, I'm just worried about them refusing to fix it since the bootloader has been unlocked. I have insurance through AT&T but I don't know how things like that work since I've never been in this situation before.

You may not believe this but I've had 10 One X's and all have had problems. 5 were exchanged in store during the 30 days and 5 were sent as warranty replacements. The one I have now seems to be the most usable but there are still a bunch of problems (wifi signal fluctuates a ton, loud rattling noise when using vibrate). I've never seen a phone this nice but with so many quality control issues. All of the One X's I've had have gotten really hot with use.

ive never had any problems with this phone whatsoever, (Knock on wood) other than getting alittle warm playing a game while its charging
I feel your pain, bro. I purchased my Intl One X at full price at the time, which was $669.00 USD. It died two weeks later when the charging/data port stopped working. I sent it into HTC and after many phone calls to Tier 2 escalations and 2 months, they finally told me they could not repair my phone because of an Apple injunction on importing the motherboards to the US. This is how I came to be with the One XL.
The whole experience was IMO completely ridiculous and I've never experienced such horrible customer service from any company ever. They even tried to charge me to diagnose the problem with my phone. I fought them and got them to pay for the fee themselves. If I had paid it, would they have refunded it a month later when they told me that they couldn't fix my phone? Doubt it!
I got to use my original One X for a full two weeks before it died. Spent 2 months badgering HTC America about where my phone is, when is it going to be fixed, whats wrong with it, etc... only to be told "Sorry, you're ****ed!"
This story repeats itself tons of times in the One X forums from many different users. While I think the One XL is sweet (only because of LTE, if I had to use HSPA+ I'd still be really pissed and probably wouldve just sold it) I'll never buy or recommend HTC again.
Yeah I'm on my third now. Speaker keeps dying. Volume is so low that it's impossible to hear anything.
Htc fanboys might hate apple and samsung as much as they want but truth is that none of those companies have customers that still have problems with their phone even after getting the 10th replacement

Cool story Hansel, show me one supporting link that suggests unlocked bootloader returns are the reason for high insurance rates. Tell me it's the modding communities fault and not every Tom, ****, and Harry that returned their phone because it was too quiet, too bright or it hurt their feelings.

Apple? Sure. But Samsung? No. I just bought the HTC One X because I replaced my Galaxy S III so many times for various problems that AT&T would not exchange it anymore. Also, my third Nexus 7 is on the way. I think quality control has gone downhill across the board.

Cracked Housing Question

Hi Everyone,
My girlfriend lost her iphone 4s a few weeks ago. I've found a one x for a great price except the housing is cracked by the charging port. Is this something I should worry about?
Also, coming from an iphone, is the htc one x fairly intuitive? IMO, it's a better phone but my girlfriend is not as tech savvy as I am. Please let me know, thank you for your help.

Give her a few days and messing with it and she'll figure everything out. It's not like things are super complicated to find or do and there are plenty of "getting started with android" articles out there.
Got a picture of the cracked port? If it's between the port and the screen I wouldn't worry about it. If it's on the other side creeping towards the back of the device I would be a bit worried that a few more drops could propagate the crack.
I don't have a picture but I'm going to see it tonight in person. Thanks for your reply, much appreciated.

You have your answer for the crack, but the change from iPhone to HOX is very easy.
I actually came from an iPhone 4 before the HOX.
The only thing i think she'll miss is Siri, its a gimmick anyway and there's voice to text and voice control on this phone.
Best of luck to you guys with the transition.
PS: You could also get the housing replaced if it bothers her.

Make sure to turn it on to make sure it boots. Also you should boot it into the bootloader (reboot the phone and hold vol down until the bootloader shows up). At the top you'll see some words like LOCKED, TAMPERED, RELOCKED, etc etc. If you see TAMPERED that means the phone is rooted. UNLOCKED or RELOCKED means the bootloader has been unlocked or relocked.
If the person has a custom rom installed on it, I would ask him/her to RUU it back to stock before giving it to you. It'll be helpful to your girlfriend to have stock software so she can find the support she needs for it without coming here to the forums being confused about why hers has weird bugs and isn't running stock.
I bet some one took that bad boy apart. That's the only way I have seen that particular area get cracked, is from taking the phone apart

I ran into a bit of luck as the random I thought I was meeting up with turned out to be a friend of a friend. He seemed pretty honest about everything and the crack isn't really that bad at all. He gave me the receipt as well, puppy is on warranty till june 2013.

2nd Faulty Replacement, Now what?

Hey guys,
Time for a little advice. I have the HTC One XL on ATT, and began to notice sever screen rippling on the sides and middle of my device. So, naturally, I called warranty and had it replaced. That replacement came back with screen ripples worse than the original device. So I called again, and they overnighted a second replacement. Just came in this morning. 3 dead pixels, and a prominent ripple effect along the left side of the device towards the middle.
I've heard stories about getting it switched for another device, but is that even possible? What are your guy's thoughts?

Try getting 10 replacements before getting one halfway decent. I have to admit tho that AT&T is good with sending out replacements no questions asked.
P. S. How bout we let mods do their job instead of us trying to do it for them. Just sayin'.

They're definitely good at sending the replacements, no lies there. Only problem is that they're defective upon arrival.. Which isn't good at all.
I don't want them to keep sending replacements if they're all going to be broken, ya know?
P.S.- I thought that since this was more of an issue and advice kind of thing, that maybe general would be a good idea? Not exactly asking a direct question. I've been on XDA for a while, I know the rules.

They used to let you walk into a store and exchange your broken device for a brand new one. Not the case anymore.

If you happen to have a AT&T Device Support Center near you, I believe they will swap it out for you right there: http://www.att.com/esupport/article.jsp?sid=KB91429&cv=820#fbid=raRvhaTUUJr
Its not official policy to let you switch to a different phone. But I've heard of cases where they will do it, if you've gone through several bad refurbs, and b1tch loud enough at the right people. Having multiple lines, long time customer etc. helps also.
I think the One X is fundamentally a good phone, and HTC makes good hardware. As mentioned before, its probably a matter of the fact that you are getting refurbs and not new ones. Its a bit odd that you have had 3 phones with the exact same issue. Maybe the screens get damaged when they fix the phones and re-assemble them?

That was my thought. When I got my One X new, it wasn't having the screen issues. Then they started appearing. So I called and got the replacement.
Granted, I know that all screens are going to flex if you press on them. That's just a given. But the One X (As told by HTC themselves) should not have as severe flex as I've been getting on all 3 devices. That isn't right.
I guess I'll call and see. We have 3 lines on the plan right now, and my family has been on ATT since it was called Cingular. So I'll see what happens. three phones just doesn't cut it when they all break
EDIT: Just got off the phone. They're sending a third replacement overnight. If this third one doesn't work, they're giving me a free make/model change. Hopefully this replacement is good though, I love the One X

The reason why it happens is probably because you're getting refurbs which are basically returned devices that were only checked to see if they turned on and did not have major damage.
I would press for constant replacement until you get a perfect device.

They told me they would do the same and at the time the only phone that was close was the sgs3 but they said I couldn't have that one. They gave me a choice of like 3 old phones. I was pretty pissed.

The reason why it happens is probably because you're getting refurbs which are basically returned devices that were only checked to see if they turned on and did not have major damage.
I would press for constant replacement until you get a perfect device.

After 10 replacements not one was in "good" condition until the one I have now. But now that I think about it the more I can see the reason this one also was returned by someone and just sent back out by AT&T without checking or fixing it. It's extremely laggy at times for no apparent reason even after a factory reset and rom change and the vibration rattles pretty loudly. I never can notice a difference with the custom kernels set to 2.1ghz. Seems the same as 1.5. Those seem to be the major things. I wasn't looking for those problems tho.
The problems the other phones had were mostly screen and build problems. Overheating also.
Anyways, that's why I left AT&T and now use Straight Talk and buy my phones straight up and unlocked.

Who knows what this guy will say. The One X is a high quality phone. I guess it all depends on the rep you get because I've heard reports of people getting credit on their account, and a guy got the GS3. But I won't settle for anything less than the One X

So long, guys

Well, the screen on my One X died yesterday, and I was unable to revive it. After some wrangling with Customer Service, they're upgrading me early to a One. I'll probably drop in here from time to time, but I'm off to the One forums. Happy modding, and hope to see most of you over there eventually.

Tried to do that a few weeks ago when One XL #3 took a crap, but the One had just come out and it supposedly wasn't in the CSR's system. I ended up with XL #4, which, so far is working great (and is now rooted and S-off - hurray!).
Good luck with your One!
Thanks for the bootsplash ideas. Might come to the one sections to make some for it after I reign in sense 5.

This happened to me. Have you tried taking it apart and adjusting that cable that is bent at 90°? That worked for me, but the phone caught on for shortly after. enjoy the one. I'd get it if att wasn't conspiring with HTC to keep away the rooters, and I don't want to pay $650 since the nexus 4 is great for under 400

Att didn't trip about you sending back tampered phones ? (relocked bl)
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
Nope. I did relock and RUU back to stock each time, but I didn't bother changing the CID back or anything. Heck, the most recent one was S-off.
I haven't had any ROM related issues, though. It was always hardware.

Id get the one also if I didn't have to pay $450 for a "partial upgrade" why pay that much to enter a BS contract when I can hopefully hold out till the nexus 5 rumors start. This will be the longest I've ever used a device as my primary phone lol

I have not read a single instance on here of AT&T denying warranty service, or even giving a poo at all, about unlocked bootloader or custom ROM being on a phone. But lots of reports of folks here successfully sending in "tampered" phones for warranty service on a hardware issue.

I'm thinking about it, but I'm not going to take it apart until I'm sure I'm sticking with the One and all is well.
FWIW, HTC is not blocking the One, whether or not AT&T ever plans to ask them to. Looks like the rumors were wrong.
The international One roms work great on the AT&T version. I don't think I'm ever going back to an AT&T base.
Also, the frustrating multitasking issues on the One X? Not a sign of them on the One. :victory:
Just dropped mine and the screen shattered the other day. Have ensquared so paying $75 to have another one sent to me.
Honestly a little bummed I couldn't get a Samsung gs3 (or onex+) shipped out instead, but ay least I'll still have a phone .

I honestly want it, but I don't think my contract is over with the one x until late this year, and I'd rather not pay the cancellation fee :\ or the $650 Google version with aosp or Dev version

Lots of people have gotten early upgrades by complaining loudly enough. I was at least six months early.

Agreed. I lost my phone about 6 months before my upgrade was due, and ATT was more than willing to send me a One X. I paid a whopping 99 cents for it

Did you guys have AT&Ts extra insurance, or is this the normal 1 year warranty? My battery has been really screwey recently, keeps getting drained really fast when the phone is sleeping. I'm wondering if I should just go make some noise.
