What the hell is this crap? At&t is allowing iphone owners to upgrade to i5 at a subsidized price and still keep their unlimited data. But it's only for iPhone users. First we get screwed for being on Verizon and then we get screwed for not being iSheep? Lame! Here's the info:
AT&T just released a press release announcing availability of the iPhone 5. That certainly shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone, but a tid-bit within the press release certainly has grabbed out attention. AT&T has announced that it will allow those who purchased AT&T’s unlimited data plans from 2007-2010 to continue to use it even when purchasing the iPhone 5 at a subsidized price. AT&T discontinued its unlimited data plan in 2010 and moved to a tiered data plan, which it has since reprised and restructured, but those who originally purchased the unlimited plan were allowed to hang on to it as long as their contract remained unchanged. AT&T has been throttling those plans for different tiers in especially in high traffic areas..
Over the past year Verizon Wireless, like AT&T, has moved away from unlimited plans as users move to new LTE data plans that feature shared data. AT&T has taken a similar approach, offering its customers shared data plans that can be used across every device on a specific plan, including tablets. AT&T is also requiring users to sign-up for the expensive shared plans in order to use iOS 6′s FaceTime over 3G feature. Verizon Wireless on the other hand hasn’t revealed its plans. At the other end, Sprint is continuing its approach to touting its “sharing is not caring” unlimited data plans.
I'd stick with Verizon. Better coverage in most areas. This is a good strategy for AT&T to keep their customers though.

At least we aren't being forced to move to shared data plans just to use facetime over cellular data. Thats ridiculous. But I feel like this is what Verizon should be doing. Let us unlimited data users keep our unlimited data. But not let it be only for iphone users like AT&T. So if you want this phone on verizon, you'll have to pay about $700 off contract if I'm correct just to keep your unlimited data

I don't know how they get away with that, I laugh whenever I see those. Coincidentally I work for a company that is engineering ATTs LTE national rollout and all I can say is that it will be a long while untill ATT catches up with Verizon's LTE coverage.
Even if AT&T's 4g footprint is larger it still isn't true 4g

The only reason so many people have AT&T is because the original iPhone forced them to that carrier. Years later, most of those people realize there is better service elsewhere. People have no reason to remain loyal. This is a promotion top keep people who could go elsewhere.

The part about only iphone IS NOT TRUE. You can upgrade to any smart phone be it iOS,android or WP7/8 and stay on the "unlimited" data plan.
I knew when verizon got bigger than AT&T that they would start doing crap like this and pass AT&T on pissing every one off.
I know if I could get unlimited LTE with a unlocked phone, I would say good by verizon and your sucky locked down phones and your slow as sprint 3G with "droped", but not really droped call's on any phone I have used. ( 2 Razrs and one S3)
Now I like AT&T bashing, but say some thing like they throttle or there sales men try to get you to go to the 3GB plan or send you a bill $20 over the norm with out it being listed as going over my min, text or data. ( They paid for that one)
I think it is a slap in the face to all Android users. I would rather stick with Verizon who f's everyone equally then dictates what phone they think you should use.

They have the largest and fastest 3g network there HSPA+ network (I think that's what they call 4g) reaches 8 mb download vs Verizon 2-3 mb on 3g but Verizon has a large and really fast 4g network

Think about why it is only for iphones. They are paying $199 for the number 5 instead of a 4s on the phone. It the same phone, so techniclly they have the same phone. Just they are just losing $199 for no reason.

Verizon offered me to keep my unlimited data, at 4G speeds, but the total price of my old plan would be higher than my unlimited voice and text with 2 GB of data. Personally, I don't use a ton of 4G, mostly only at work, so this was doable for me. Verizon told me if I moved to a new subsidized phone (the S3) I would lose my unlimited data... So I could have paid full price or brought in my own phone, but my bill went form $172 to $130. Can't complain.

This. After you use your 3 gigs you are throttled to edge speeds... which makes Verizon 3G seem rocket fast.
But AT&T is allowing grandfathering for all devices still (though I'm glad I'm with vzw. I prefer true unlimited). And they allow people to sign up on their old plans. That is what I wish Verizon had actually done. In the past week we have signed up roughly fifteen people on AT&Ts old plans. In fact due to our system being archaic, we can't sign people up directly to the new plans.

I think they are just advertising it for iPhone because of the boosted sales they might see. AT&T from what I hear is losing customers.
I'm glad the iPhone users can't get unlimited LTE. Less strain on the LTE network for us. Especially for me where basically everybody has an iPhone.

Can someone point me to wording in the contract which specifies that current customers with LTE-capable phones will be grandfathered when tiered pricing comes this summer?
I'm not looking for anecdotes of past grandfathering, since comments by the VZW CFO indicate that they'll be leveraging LTE pricing for a revenue boost. It's my opinion that there's no precedent for the move to tiered LTE pricing, and that current LTE contracts will revert to a tiered plan on subsequent contracts.
Asking because I keep seeing assertions that LTE grandfathering is a sure bet, when all signs say otherwise. I understand this is a touchy subject; having broached it before, people get quite emotional in their claims that they're entitled to existing prices until the end of time.
You won't find anything because there is none. No one here knows if/how Verizon will grandfather.
Guys... calm down. You signed a contract stating UNLIMITED DATA. They cant take it away from you without breaching the contract. In that case they will have to let you go (no ETF) or simply be sued.

even that's no guarantee. See the current line of smartphones. They still require a plan change to activate if you don't already have a smartphone plan regardless of how you purchase it.
you should be good as long as you stay with a 4g phone when upgrading and extending your contract in the future, when going from 3g to 4g the system automatically adds/removes 4g/3g. If you're that worried, double check before signing your contract that it is still showing your unlimited 29.99, if it's not, make them get it fixed (unless something changes in the future they force you to lose the unlimited) but I see people on alltell calling plans all the time and outdated calling plans. same goes for outdated data plans.

This is the kind of ill-informed advice I'm talking about.
Again, read and listen to the communication from the money side of VZW. It's my informed opinion that unlimited pricing will no longer be an option at upgrade time when current contracts expire.
What happened in the past with acquisitions is completely unrelated to the current situation.
Until your contract expires nothing will change. Now there is no precedence, but when you upgrade your phone, you usually can RENEW your contract, if you don't change anything, it SHOULD remain the same, but that is all subjective.

Jesus! do Verizon have a trade in program?
Working in the wireless industry for several years, the only way to guarantee unlimited LTE is to have a rep confirm you're grandfathered and demand that they put notes in your account stating this. The notes are where its at. A coworker's wife is a regional trainer for VZW and she has no idea how it'll play out.

You just moved the goalposts. You started this thread saying that you think that Verizon would force tiered pricing on those of us who already have 4g unlimited contracts, and now you moved to when that contract ends.
When the contract ends, Verizon will either extend my unlimited 4g, or I'll move to a company that does offer unlimited 4g. I'll worry about that in about 22 months or so.

A plan change to 4G... which every phone in the next 6-7 years will have (possibly longer). You wont have to change any plan if you buy a phone at full retail. Just throw your SIM in the new phone.
4G LTE with a 2-5 GB cap seems ridiculous. Why bother building your infrastructure if people cant even enjoy it? Should almost be illegal how much they charge for data. People complain about gas prices, but what about the raping we take from data and text charges.
These people need to be regulated.
After having heard the news about Verizon getting rid of their unlimited data plan, I felt a chill run down my spine, thinking what if Tmobile did this. Then I googled "Verizon no data plan" and found out that AT&T was the first to get rid of their unlimited plans.
I pray to God, that the AT&T buy out of Tmobile will not go through. If it does and they get rid of our unlimited plan, then this G2x will be my last smart phone, because let's face it, there's a movement to destroy the U.S. economy, not only is the dollar losing it's value, but most people have less income and living expenses are increasing, and now the mobile carriers are getting into it and milking us till our nipples bleed.

I'm on the same boat as you. My plan has 5 smartphones in it and without unlimited data, my bill would go through the roof. It's gotten to the point where my laptop is a side gadget. Haha

I recently (2 months ago) switched to a carrier called Simple Mobile. UNLIMITED everything for $60.00 a month. Network is all on the same as the T-Mobile frequencies, I do get 4G just as fast as my buddy who is still on T-Mo.
In areas where coverage is limited it switches over to the T-Mo network.

Let them take away unlimited plan cuz they will just recieve a bunch of disconnects cuz i for one know a smart phone requires way to much bandwidth to even try to pay as you go teir plans.
This is BS how U.S. cell companies get away with this highway robbery. We are about to default on the countries debt.. millions of people without jobs and they want to penny pinch some more out of us.
Secondly we dont even have real 4G speeds and Singapore has faster and cheaper cell plans then us... wow its just sad

They are doing it because with smart phones, unlimited data isn't a realistic option with current infrastructure and technology in mind. Its too costly to let people use 30 gigabytes of data a month with no additional penalty on the customers part. 95 percent of users fall within the tier limits of 2gb or less.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
Yes the unlimited data thing really blows, I use my wireless hotspot to connect my wifi iPad to and watch movies and work remotely. I average about 25GB a month, but now with all these caps its going to be like having Comcast. They call me up several times a year and threaten to d/c me because I'm always going over their 250GB cap. The thing is, almost 200GB come from the three TV's that are constantly streaming HULU and Netflix, and the rest is normal internet stuff.
This is going to really screw me up, I guess I'll have to ask for my work to contribute more towards my calling plan.
You don't have to worry about it. FTC regulations state that when a firm acquires another, it must honor any and all lingering agreements of the acquired firm. Meaning if AT&T does buy T-Mobile they are legally obligated to provide you with the service you were promised by TM.

Sure, you'll have service, and your data will be EDGE after they shut down the T-Mo 3/4G. I dont think anywhere in the contract does it say they are obligated to give you a certain throughput. So after you are fed up with slow data you will be force to buy a new phone.. BUT, will this mean that we can get a new "LTE 4G" ATT phone, unlock it and have our grandfathered plan from former T-Mo with new ATT network??
I imagine AT&T would offer something where we can upgrade to a GSM-compatible phone at minimal if any charge. Even if they don't advertise something like that, it would almost certainly be an option their customer service can push through.
Effectively ruining pretty much every smartphone customer's phone would be PR suicide, and possibly even grounds for a class-action lawsuit.
Yes AT& T will honor our plans, until you need to change a service or phone and then you will have to go to there plans!

This transition should be a few years in the making after the buyout proceeds. Every customer who bought a 3G/4G phone should be off-contract by the time the transition happens & then they'd offer you a new phone with a contract extension (like normal). This shouldn't be a big deal at all.
AT&T is under zero obligation to honor the TMO plans after the term of your contract is up (and even then, if it 'costs' them too much to honor it, they can cancel the contract and force you to either update or leave, but at least you'd be able to leave without an ETF). From what I've read, they didn't grandfather the Cingular plans for most people, so I don't see why they'll grandfather the TMO plans now (meaning after your contract is up, they have no reason to continue allowing you to use the TMO pricing).
Sigh, this really sucks. I hope the government disallows this merger. For people like me who only supports GSM tech, this is a freaking disaster and is obviously a monopoly. How can the government not see this. 1 GSM network is NOT a choice.
However, I'm guessing when AT&T was willing to say that they'd pay T-Mobile if the merger doesn't go through, they've probably paid off the right people with millions to make sure that they don't actually have to pay off that few billions since the merger will go through regardless. The so-called due-process currently occurring is likely to be a sham =(

I have Page Plus, which is one of the few MVNO's to use Verizon towers, and have yet to not have service. I've been all over the country for the last year, coast to coast. I pay $28.50 a month after the callingmart discount, and get 1200 minutes, 3000 texts, 250mb of data. I use email, navigation, and opera mini web browsing (compresses everything), and 250mb gets me through the month. of course, you can have unlimited voice and text for $38 -always use callingmart, it is 5% off every month.
I used to have Verizon, but got out of my contract, which was costing me over $100 a month. So, i am saving close to $1000 a year doing this, which can go toward more important things, like hookers and cocaine 8-]
Doesn't Verizon already have a separate "partition" for prepaid? And isn't it crazy how 3G has become the po' man's preferred network over the last few years? I supposed if I streamed more HD video on the go, I would be dying for 4g and more data, but I only watch movies and stuff at home! When I'm out of the house, I am mainly working or socializing. To each their own, of course.

Partition? Lol. I love VZW's service, anywhere I've gone in the U.S., MN, ND, SD, TN, IA, my service is flawless, even in sparsely populated areas. When T-Mobile and similar carriers can offer the same coverage, they'll have my attention, until then though, I'll just get an unlimited amount of the quality I pay for...

I will say this much on their coverage. I went to Hawaii last year and was able to get 4g. If that tells you anything about their coverage then you know its huge. Still though you can get Verizon off contract with their prepaid service which is what they will tell you. Also, once your two years is up you are technically off contract.

Yes, after a customer's contract date has passed, they are just month to month on the terms of their former contract. Prior to signing up for the unlimited data plan, I was off contract with VZW for several years clinging to a discontinued plan of theirs. I have no issue doing the same again, but am disappointed by the current smartphone crop VZW carries. No N4 or HTC one has had me looking around, but I'll likely stay, I've been with VZW for over 10 years and consume an obscene amount of data.
I'm betting that HTC has a better version of the one coming out instead. Likely it is the dna 2. As for the n4, who cares? It is 3g only and the n5 should he coming out soon. Hopefully they get it but I'm doubting it since the Google devices receive all their updates from Google and not through the carrier which Verizon doesn't like.

there's always something new coming out. but seems Verizon's versions seems to lag behind the other carriers phones. I wouldn't mind seeing a nexus device but Verizon shot themselves in the foot on that one with the gnex. I have thought about the s3 and the note 2. the size of the note puts me off and I'm 6'3" which should be perfect for me. we all look for that holy grail of cellphones but most never finds it.

Yep. Indeed, n4 is 3G only. Honestly, I like HTC build quality, and am not completely averse to moto either for the same reason. The upcoming moto devices are exciting, as is the HTC one, I hope some variants of those reach VZW. I would switch carriers to obtain an HTC made nexus though, if ever there's another one in the future.
I am shocked in Google owning moto that they dont make all nexus devices.

VZW has gotten so bloated and complacent, at this point I doubt they'd do anything in their customers' best interest.
They might introduce a "no contract" plan, but it would be more expensive and less useful than other options.
Hey XDA guys;
I am a long time AT&T customer and I have an Unlimited Plan. I've never had a phone with LTE enabled because I hated the options available at AT&T so I've always used unlocked phones like the Nexus 4 on HSPA.
Now that the Google Edition of the S4 is being launched, I've decided to purchase it if I can get a LTE on my grandfathered unlimited plan. I've heard that many people have moved to LTE on their old unlimited plans, but a lot of those stories involve using 2 year upgrades and purchasing AT&T phones.
My concern is that I won't get the LTE connection though because it's not an AT&T phone. I have no desire to give up unlimited data for LTE either. Question: Does anyone know if I can get LTE on the Google Edition S4 by just calling/visiting AT&T and asking them to enable it?
Thanks and sorry for the heavy context, but I just want to get the most accurate response.
Bump. Sorry would really like to know.

I'm on VZW, but it's my understanding that you only lose your grandfathered unlimited when you buy a phone at subsidized price. I could go into VZW right now and drop $800 on a new phone, and keep my unlimited, but pay the $1500 subsidized price and I lose it. So I'd imagine that as long as your phone is compatible with AT&T's LTE you should be good to go, but calling them wouldn't hurt!
Yea it makes sense that VZW and AT&T have similar policies. I worry about calling AT&T or using their forums in fear of getting deceptive answers.
I am just a very short time away from being able to walk away from Big Red (feb 20). i am very reluctant to do so. I love the unlimited data. I am on an old alltel plan from yrs ago. So my question is if i stay with verizon what would be a great phone to purchase that should have a great development like my current phone the galaxy nexus. what phones are all these great developers using who still want to stay with verizon. I am seriously considering ordering the Note 3 Developer edition for verizon off of the samsung website. i am in line for one. they were on backorder. what do you think?
I have unlimited data on multiple lines, which is pretty much the only reason why I am still on VZW. They will probably kill all unlimited data plans either this year or next year, it is just a matter of time. When you give up VZW unlimited data, you will never get it back. Ever. Yes, T-mobile offers "unlimited" data but there is a catch: you are throttled after you go over 3 GB. So before you walk away from unlimited data, be sure you have your priorities in check. What is more important to you, having unlimited data or a phone that is not locked down? If it comes down to how much money you can save on another carrier, then that is another matter, and obviously a top priority for most people. But I would strongly encourage you to think about it long and hard before giving up unlimited data until VZW forces it.
Regarding your question about phones, unfortunately VZW is notoriously anti-open and anti-consumer, and that is not going to change. With each new generation of devices, they force OEMs to make it increasingly difficult to unlock bootloaders and root. I am not telling you anything you don't know here. VZW has managed to gimp all of their latest devices so much that the development scene is very slow compared to just a few months ago. If you check out the VZW development threads, you will see what I mean. I have a Note 2 and Note 3. The Note 2 community is still fairly active considering how long it has been out, and many devs have moved on to other devices. But the Note 2 isn't crippled with Knox, which is why the Note 3 dev scene is so pale in comparison. Unless you have a Note 3 DE, you are stuck on TW based roms, probably until the end of time. And Samsung's miniscule allotment of DEs has prevented it from becoming the superstar phone that it could (should) have been. You can hold out for a DE, but the fact that so few people have it means there will be lack of interest & effort from devs to build roms for it. So in reality if you stay on VZW, you must decide if you want TW or no TW. If you like TW, then by all means get the best TW phone available (Note 3). If you want more options like AOSP-based roms, then consider the LG G2 or the upcoming G2 Pro (if it even comes to VZW). The G2 dev community is pretty active, much more so than the Note 3. Alternatively, you could get an older phone like the Note 2 or S4 with an established dev community, and just wait & see what comes down the pike.

That's completely untrue. T-Mobile unlimited means unlimited. You're throttled if you are below their $70 plan. I'm currently on their $70 unlimited everything prepaid plan and haven't gotten throttled and I'm at around 5GB of usage this month. The $60 plan is 2.5GB before throttle. The $50 plan is 500 MB before throttle. There's also a $30 plan that's 100 minutes (10c/minute after), unlimited text, and 5GB before throttle. All plans include LTE.

Actually you just proved my point. Unless you are willing to pay $70/month, you WILL be throttled. But thanks for clarifying the cutoff figures.

Actually, no. You made a broad-sweeping statement, insinuating that no matter what plan you're on, you'll be throttled after 3GB of usage. Try being more specific next time.

The take home point is this:
The OP is currently on a Verizon unlimited data plan, which means truly unlimited and doesn't need to be qualified by how much he pays per month.
Verizon unlimited is truly unlimited and unthrottled. T-mobile's service is unlimited so long as you are willing to pay a premium. If you are unwilling or can't afford to pay that premium, then you will be throttled. My original statement may be "broad sweeping", but there is an equally broad number of people that will not pay a premium for truly unlimited service.
So comparing the OP's current unlimited data plan to T-mobile's unlimited data plan is not necessarily comparing apples to apples.
But thank you for your exceedingly helpful contribution to this thread about what phone to use on Verizon

Chances are if you're in Verizon, you're already paying a "premium" over T-Mobile. Take it from me, I used to be a Verizon employee and I'm a current T-Mobile customer. Happy now?
To the OP:
Any Verizon device Galaxy S4 or later supports AWS LTE (which is what T-Mobile uses for LTE). So if you buy one of those phones and switch, as long as you live in an LTE area you will get full service (EDGE, HSPA+, LTE). However if you're looking to start new and buy or subsidize a T-Mobile phone, you have to ask yourself what you want in a phone.
Personally, I would recommend either the Moto X Developer Edition (because you maintain warranty even if you unlock the bootloader), or the Nexus 5 (a natural choice). I personally prefer and own the former and absolutely love it. It's pretty much stock Android with a few useful additions like active notifications, touch less controls, etc. And the unlocked and Developer Editions get their updates straight from Motorola. Matter of fact, I just got the 4.4.2 OTA update a few days ago.

Thank you every one for a few choices that i really havent paid attention too. the moto x de. and the g2. Look guys... i pay 110 a month for one freaking line but is unlimited data. if i switch to tmobile i will save money per month just in the bill alone. i plan on buying any phone i get straight up. no contracts. i want to be free and clear. so tmobiles $70 unlimited plan is the way to go if i cannot manage to find me a phone on verizon that has a strong development community behind it. i KNOW what coverage is like with verizon here in my area. i was taken by the larger screen of the note3. all i want is me some AOSP roms. not a fan of TW really. the galaxy nexus has just spoiled me to AOSP. its over @ yrs strong and still running the up to date Android versions. unlike the previous droids i have owned. verizon support gone after six months. i want a good phone that will be viable in the android world for maybe the next 2 yrs.
i am scared to bite the bullet and leave big red. really dont know what their coverage is like here. 8 yrs ago it sucked.

Moto X, trust me. It doesn't need any custom ROMs. It just works. I promise you. You can root if you want and install a custom recovery. At most maybe XPosed with some modules. But ROM-wise, it's amazing out of the box. And this is coming from a guy who has a ROM'd Galaxy S4 too.
