Unlimited 4G ending on Thursday

I just learned tonight that as of Thursday, 3 days from now, 4G data plans will be capped.
The new cap will be 5GB. Pricing overage is not specified just yet, I would assume the standard $10/GB overage.
This is for any NEW customers and any upgrades done AFTER this day. Anyone who already has a TBolt is grandfathered in (myself included). Spread the word, and let your friends/family know should they need a truly unlimited plan.
I would expect an announcement tomorrow sometime. Just wanted to let you guys know.

This is the reason I upgraded immediately, even if it required paying full retail

My business rep has also told me that people getting 4G data plans better do it now, before it changes. He did not tell me this Thursday, but his feeling was no more than 30 days after the TB was released. He also told me there's no guarantee anyone on the unlim plans will be grandfathered.

This is what I was afraid of.. glad I JUST got mine lol

I knew the unlimited 4G data wouldn't last until the Droid Bionic. Glad I have my Thunderbolt.

There would be lots of trouble for not grandfathering people already up and running on unlimited 4G data plans. If it isn't in the contract they can't suddenly put it into the contract. Additionally as the TB currently offers no built in mechanism to turn off 4G for those who got it under the concept of it having unlimited data would have to be offered the option to return their phones, etc... Seriously it'd be a PR nightmare/huge trouble for VZW to not grandfather people in, its the same reason AT&T did it for people who already had unlimited plans when they moved to a tiered system.

That was my thought to it also. Cant change my contract just bc they want to. Thats why we have contracts, to lock things in place

So what happens when we want to move onto another 4g device? Are they going to allow us to transfer our 4g plan to the new device and retain our unlimited? I'd imagine since the LTE sim is swappable.. we can probably just pop it into another device and keep unlimited..

Wow I just signed up for Verizon today and got the Thunderbolt I signed up for the Unlimited plan looks like its a good thing I did seeing this tonight

So glad I bought my Tbird on release day.
So pissed that Verizon would do this. After the gov't sat on their hands and made them go either unlimited or 5GB (not "5GB unlimited") in years past, their CDMA based data plans have been unlimited ever since. REALLY unlimited. Unless you're in the 95th percentile. Maybe.
But now they're going the way of the greedy [email protected]#[email protected]#%(^#$^$$%#$$ at AT&T? What happened to the carrier that was both reliable-thanks-CDMA and consumer-friendly-thanks-Sprint, in the same package?
Major regression. Very unhappy. I'm glad I have grandfathered, but I wonder if I will be forced over to a 5GB plan in two years when my contract expires.

Can we get some sort of confirmation to this rumor?

I'm glad I became a Verizon customer this past Sunday. I was with T-Mobile till the news broke out. I refuse to give AT&T any of my money!
Anyway, I'm glad I made this move. The Thunderbolt is crazy fast, and I'm very happy with it. Oh, only 1 thing I did hate.... My battery died after 3 hours of being fully charged.

I'd think that switching devices isn't an issue. Take AT&T they only forced people to tiered if they change out of the unlimited data plan. As their entry level tiered was priced at like $15/mo vs $30 so some people who didn't use much data chose to do that but never could get unlimited again. Also for developers and the like switching between devices for testing on Verizon it seems to require switching a phone ID and activating that device, but I assume with 4G the sim card would only need to be moved? I'm unsure as to how that works, but I'll likely need to move between my TB, which arrives tomorrow, and my Incredible for development purposes. So I'm sure I'll figure out the details soon.

I assume until Verizon makes an official statement it'll remain a rumor. Regardless, sooner than I've been hearing. I'd heard tiered by the summer. But suppose a test run for a week might be enough to see what kind of saturation to expect network wise. But think before the bionics release would be a reasonable guess. But well wish it wasn't headed that way. Think the approach of I think sprint just charging an additional $10/mo if you want 4G isn't a bad business model. Plus the users who get these phones and barely use any data would likely offset from those who do...

after testing lte i would pay $10 a month more for it.

My Verizon Rep is allowing me to upgrade early, but pay Verizon price for the phone. But my upgrade is the 29th of March. So if I can, I would wait and grab from Amazon. So until some sort of verification somewhere I'll wait. They won't do a surprise change would they?

Don't think for a minute that they won't do a surprise change! The legalese you click / sign through when you're becoming a customer says they can change any part of any of your terms at any time with or without notice, basically they can decide that it's $1,000 per byte and that's just tough luck for you. Of course they would probably get sued for being unreasonable, but you see my point. The act of changing the deal on a dime is not illegal because you agreed to let them.
And if you aren't even a Verizon Unlimited Smartphone Data Plan customer at all right now, they have even less obligation to you, because you aren't a customer, and you have no chance of being grandfathered.

this was my understanding. Even if they have a contract with you, they can still change it, but it then gives you an option, you bend over and take the changes, or you can leave with no ETF.
Also if they are not going to grandfather people in, then I will be returning my phone within the 30 days and going with another carrier. I like their coverage and LTE is crazy, but a 5GB cap on internet speeds this fast? you'll be hitting cap in a week.
I am hoping that the whole deal between AT&T and T-Mobile becoming one company makes them change their mind, or at least rethink the data plans.

Is it pretty much guaranteed that Verizon will be getting rid of unlimited data?

It's such a huge selling point for Verizon. No other carrier has true unlimited data. If they do cut unlimited data, do you think they'll go the route of T-Mobile and throttle users who go over 2GB? Or will they just starting charging fees?
What I don't get is how ISPs charge $30 a month and you can do whatever the hell you want but cell phone companies want to cap you at the same price. A 2GB cap can be blown through in a few weeks, if that.

They have said they are going to tiered plans, however that doesn't mean that they are getting rid of unlimited data (to my knowledge they haven't said they are getting rid of unlimited data) but I do believe they will. If they keep unlimited data I positive it would increase substantially.

Actually, AT&T has data caps. Their DSL service is capped at 150GB though. I couldn't care less if Verizon capped me at 150GB on my phone for 30 bucks.

Its a pretty difficult thing to predict right now. I believe they will cap 3g but not 4g.
For a 2 Hour HD movie you are using 3gb's of data. If Verizon caps it at 2gb you have already hit your limit. 4g is more for streaming videos thus the extra speed. Who needs a 10mb connection for checking Facebook? So I really can't see them tiering 4g, well let me rephrase that I think they will tier 4g but there will be an unlimited price for probably around $50 a month. 3g is much easier to think about since we have AT&T who already has a limit with it working fine (As in people are able to do everything they already do while staying in the limit.... Well most people)
So basically right now I feel there is no way they can get away without having an unlimited plan for 4g. Plus from what I have heard the towers are much cheaper to build than the 3g towers so if bandwidth becomes a problem there can be second or even third towers built in trouble areas.

That is a land line cap and has nothing to do with mobile phones. Verizon will not set a mobile cap at 150gb that is ludicrous.

According to their upper management they never had a long term plan to keep the unlimited data plans available. My rep believes the plan is to put them into plans that are similar to their existing data plans for other devices that don't have unlimited offers (USB modems, Mifi, embedded cards, etc.) Right now it's 5GB for $50 and 10GB for $80 but the assumption is they may drop the pricing because of the number of users that would be adopting the new plans. That's pretty much all I've heard so far (and it's mostly rumor and speculation anyways.)

My guess is they will wait to see if AT&T can buy T-Mo. They wont get rid of unlimited until that falls through. If it goes through, expect it to stay.
LTE is a new game completely. I dont think they want to start out by tarnishing it.

The rep at the store said there are no plans to get rid of it, but I guess he doesn't know much.
All I can say is its not certain, however, I would hope they fix any 4g issues and expand coverage (remember the outage) before they start to change their data plans.

Not quite. If they breach the terms of their contract, we have the option to leave. Since the ETF is part of the contract in breach, we wouldn't have to pay the ETF. Or we can choose to remain grandfathered and continue to enjoy our unlimited plans.

If they offered a $30 a month 3G plan as the maximum plan option with 5GB or 10GB on the phones, then the cost could only get cheaper for you, thus no materially adverse effects. If they offered higher tiers then it becomes a bit of a question, as you might need a higher tier which would adversely affect you, but verizon might be able to claim you don't really need it and it is your choice to pay more. All in all, enough *****ing can get you out of anything.

If they take away unlimited data or increase in price that has a material adverse effect on me.

Home ISPs do limit bandwidth, or at least monitor it. After downloading about 2.5TB of movies and music in 30 days, they called me to tell me I either needed to reduce my usage drastically or upgrade to their most expensive plan (which gave faster downloads, incidentally) and so now I pay $99.99 a month for home internet.

I work for VZW and per your contract you Will be able to keep your Unlimited plan for data. However like At&t, if you upgrade to a new phone after the plans go to tiered pricing which will happen, you will need to select one of the current plans which may or may not include a option of unlimited data... The biggest question at this time and what nobody at Verizon can actually claim to know will be when or how much the new plans will cost or if Big Red will start throttling the heavy users which at this time they are not doing at all.

Knowing VZW, I wont be shocked if we're all herded to some crappy capped plan.

As long as you don't sign a new contract or change anything with your data plan you should be good. They really can't just change your plan without your permission.

It was the reason I left AT&T after 10+ years.... because I could keep my unlimited data while switching carriers.

As long as your plan doesn't change you're good. Only other way (by law) is in case of a straight buy out of Verizon. (IE... T-Mobile/AT&T).

I would assume yes. This is what I did on AT&T and I kept my original plan. You just have to make sure any rep that ever accesses your account doesn't accidentally remove the unlimited plan because once it's gone the option to add it gets removed from the system. At that point it becomes a real ***** to get it added back and requires the carrier's highest level of tech support to get it added back.

You can get your phone however you want... As long as you keep your plan, you are Grandfathered.

As long as you already have an unlimited 4G plan. Moving from unlimited 3g to unlimited 4G required me to change my plan, so when Verizon moves to limited plans, I'll bet you'll be stuck with either keeping your unlimited 3g or moving to a limited 4G plan.

Yeah, I think once you get a 4G device you're required to get the 4G plan ...

What 4G plan? My bill with a tbolt is exactly the same as before.

This makes me sad... but we saw it coming.

Could I buy a thunderbolt now for the unlimited 4G then upgrade my phone next year and maintain the unlimited plan? If so I might as well buy one now. I'm on the 1400minute $10 data Unlimited data/txt family plan I don't want to lose it. Could I buy the Thunderbolt to get a 4G plan and return it?

Only the Verizon higher-ups can answer that. There's been no word on if/how they'll grandfather. As for the latter question, you'll go back to whatever you had if you return the phone. Technically there's no differentiation between 3G and 4G plans at least on the user facing side. They may have a different feature code or something on their end but right now it's the same email/web for smartphone that the 3G devices have. That makes a real gray area and no one really knows if you're good until you upgrade or beyond or if it'll kick you to tiered if you simply purchase a phone off-contract and try to activate it.

If they change your plan mid contract you can generally get out with no ETF.

Quite a conundrum.
The Bionic looks like itll be nice, but it seemed like an act of God to flash anything on the X compared to what it takes to flash things on the Charge and I assume the bootloader will be locked on the Bionic as well.
I don't want to lose my unlimited data package, which could happen before bionic is released and I donated to the Charge cause which would make that a loss.
The hardware in the Bionic is quite appealing though, although I have not seen anything about the type battery it might use.
So, what are your opinions, I have a week to return the Charge, would you?

I have a week to return my Charge as well. I don't think I will. The Bionic looks very appealing to me in respects to the hardware, but the locked motorola bootloader sucks! I think I will wait for the next dual-core, 1gb ram phone after the Bionic.
Also, I last heard the Bionic will sport a 1930mAh battery. Here are some links that say 1930 mAh:

Have they come out and said they would force people to switch?
AT&T is allowing people to be grandfathered in, can VZW make changes to someone's contract like that without their consent, according to my local VZW store if you upgrade now, you'll be grandfathered in.

If you have unlimited data they can't take it away cuz you are grandfathered in and that would breach your contract. Later on if you renew your contract while upgrading to a new phone that might change.
But for now if you get it before the switch you get to enjoy all the 4g data you can handle. That's the main reason I got my charge lol

that was my understanding too, which I do love the Charge and I like it much better than the X, which is why holding out for the Bionic is dangerous.

If Verizon does try and force us to give up our unlimited data it would be like you said a breach of contract. If they were to breach a contract then it would be void. If these things were to happen I know for sure I would be on the phone immediately saying you breached my contract and I want out and put me month to month.
It's happened before when carriers change rates, people have gotten out of the contract because it voids the agreement you made.
Now, again, IF these things were to happen, I would be getting out of my contract like I said and waiting until the holiday season to buy one of these quad-core phones that are supposed to be arriving. So let's hope they do this!!!

you might wanna check ur contract about LTE data, cuz once they decide to pull unlimited it doesn't matter when u activated your plan it will be changed to a tiered plan there will be no unlimited data for anyone after that point

Sorry but this quite simply is untrue.
I just checked my contract and there is nothing giving them the right to change my unlimited data plan.
So once again if they were to decide to change our unlimited 4g data plan then our contracts would be nullified.

If vzw does this,back to tmobile for.me. 50 unlimited everything.

/agree, gigahertz class smartphones with 4G data are a LUXURY not a gift from your creator, if you can't afford it you don't need it.

It's been there since before smart phones people, though to avoid law suits they usually grandfather people for as long as their service remains unchanged, but if you change your billing information, any part of your plan, or the actual device you're using then you can and often will become subject to the latest greatest terms.

this line is not in any of the forms that I signed with the purchase of my Charge.

They can change it but they wont and if they do you will have 60 days to leave with no etf, trolls can gtfo

No more unlimited data :(

After having heard the news about Verizon getting rid of their unlimited data plan, I felt a chill run down my spine, thinking what if Tmobile did this. Then I googled "Verizon no data plan" and found out that AT&T was the first to get rid of their unlimited plans.
I pray to God, that the AT&T buy out of Tmobile will not go through. If it does and they get rid of our unlimited plan, then this G2x will be my last smart phone, because let's face it, there's a movement to destroy the U.S. economy, not only is the dollar losing it's value, but most people have less income and living expenses are increasing, and now the mobile carriers are getting into it and milking us till our nipples bleed.
What will yall do if Tmobile ceases to offer us unlimited data, or AT&T buy out goes through? Have you looked at the cost of their data plans? Ridiculous!

All current t-mobile subscribers would get grandfathered in, so we wouldn't have to worry.

I'm on the same boat as you. My plan has 5 smartphones in it and without unlimited data, my bill would go through the roof. It's gotten to the point where my laptop is a side gadget. Haha
Also, as a previous ATT customer, I can say that everything about that company is ****...

I would have a pace maker installed for my heart cause I can't live without my smartphone anymore.
Or get a third full time job to pay the extra cost of the bill. Luckily I have a lot of dumb people that live around me so I have lots of open Wifi to steal internet from too.

I recently (2 months ago) switched to a carrier called Simple Mobile. UNLIMITED everything for $60.00 a month. Network is all on the same as the T-Mobile frequencies, I do get 4G just as fast as my buddy who is still on T-Mo.
In areas where coverage is limited it switches over to the T-Mo network.

Um.....I thought they stopped a few months ago. With their more and even more plans...and soon with their Value/Classic plans. Unless we're talking about 2 different things here

Let them take away unlimited plan cuz they will just recieve a bunch of disconnects cuz i for one know a smart phone requires way to much bandwidth to even try to pay as you go teir plans.
This is BS how U.S. cell companies get away with this highway robbery. We are about to default on the countries debt.. millions of people without jobs and they want to penny pinch some more out of us.
Secondly we dont even have real 4G speeds and Singapore has faster and cheaper cell plans then us... wow its just sad

They are doing it because with smart phones, unlimited data isn't a realistic option with current infrastructure and technology in mind. Its too costly to let people use 30 gigabytes of data a month with no additional penalty on the customers part. 95 percent of users fall within the tier limits of 2gb or less.

Yes the unlimited data thing really blows, I use my wireless hotspot to connect my wifi iPad to and watch movies and work remotely. I average about 25GB a month, but now with all these caps its going to be like having Comcast. They call me up several times a year and threaten to d/c me because I'm always going over their 250GB cap. The thing is, almost 200GB come from the three TV's that are constantly streaming HULU and Netflix, and the rest is normal internet stuff.
This is going to really screw me up, I guess I'll have to ask for my work to contribute more towards my calling plan.

You don't have to worry about it. FTC regulations state that when a firm acquires another, it must honor any and all lingering agreements of the acquired firm. Meaning if AT&T does buy T-Mobile they are legally obligated to provide you with the service you were promised by TM.

Everything gets abused. What's the point of smart device that you cannot acess all of it's cool features?

Sure, you'll have service, and your data will be EDGE after they shut down the T-Mo 3/4G. I dont think anywhere in the contract does it say they are obligated to give you a certain throughput. So after you are fed up with slow data you will be force to buy a new phone.. BUT, will this mean that we can get a new "LTE 4G" ATT phone, unlock it and have our grandfathered plan from former T-Mo with new ATT network??

I imagine AT&T would offer something where we can upgrade to a GSM-compatible phone at minimal if any charge. Even if they don't advertise something like that, it would almost certainly be an option their customer service can push through.
Effectively ruining pretty much every smartphone customer's phone would be PR suicide, and possibly even grounds for a class-action lawsuit.

Yes AT& T will honor our plans, until you need to change a service or phone and then you will have to go to there plans!

T-mobile still has unlimited data but you have caps now, once you hit your cap you get bumped down to Edge (2G) speeds.

All current t-mobile subscribers that are on contract when the buyout proceeds would get grandfathered in for the duration of their contract.
Then, they'll no longer grandfather your plan and will force you to "upgrade" to their current plans.

This transition should be a few years in the making after the buyout proceeds. Every customer who bought a 3G/4G phone should be off-contract by the time the transition happens & then they'd offer you a new phone with a contract extension (like normal). This shouldn't be a big deal at all.
AT&T is under zero obligation to honor the TMO plans after the term of your contract is up (and even then, if it 'costs' them too much to honor it, they can cancel the contract and force you to either update or leave, but at least you'd be able to leave without an ETF). From what I've read, they didn't grandfather the Cingular plans for most people, so I don't see why they'll grandfather the TMO plans now (meaning after your contract is up, they have no reason to continue allowing you to use the TMO pricing).

Sigh, this really sucks. I hope the government disallows this merger. For people like me who only supports GSM tech, this is a freaking disaster and is obviously a monopoly. How can the government not see this. 1 GSM network is NOT a choice.
However, I'm guessing when AT&T was willing to say that they'd pay T-Mobile if the merger doesn't go through, they've probably paid off the right people with millions to make sure that they don't actually have to pay off that few billions since the merger will go through regardless. The so-called due-process currently occurring is likely to be a sham =(

hasn't this merger already passed? people keep saying that it will happen but still nothing.

Well as it stands right now I'm at 8.6 out of 5Gb of unlimited data on my G2X and its been throttled to 60Kbps. its throughput is roughly 7.1KB per second when downloading a file. so I might as well not even have a smart phone since I cant even check my damn email or use the FB/Google+ apps.
