So the iphone 5 has nothing special over the S3 apple is going to fall behind. I in a year imagine where android will be and apple will be trying to play catch up.
Galaxy S3 still the king of the Hill!!!

Agreed. S3 ***** slaps it day and night.
On both cheeks too

The iPhone 5 doesn't have the same power that the S3 has, but the only thing I wish is that the build quality on the S3 was on par. I know the plastic keeps the costs down, but there is something to be said about having a device that is all glass and aluminum.
720p front facing camera sounds sick but I never use video chat so that's useless haha. Aside from that I DO NOT regret buying the s3 at all

It'll be interesting to see how long it takes for Apple's app base to migrate to the larger screen. Having some of your apps letterboxed is going to take away from the cohesive Apple experience that is so often touted.
i was going to start a thread about the iPhone, the title was going to be "Thank you Apple for making me love my SIII more and more"...
seriously Apple, where's the innovation you talk about.

I believe many devices have HD front camera
I also wasn't too impressed by the keynote speech. I also thought the 720p front facing camera was pretty sick, although it's something I rarely use anyway.
I was amused when they were touting their maps application, as if Google maps on android wasn't doing navigation and points of interests for years now.
I just can not imagine going back to a tiny 4 inch screen now. Basically had that on my original Dinc forever.
They're still playing catchup with our phones, but that doesn't matter: they have an exiting install base which will overwhelmingly upgrade in the short term and think the iPhone 5 is the greatest innovation ever, while their closed environment continues to keep them happy and secure year after year (i.e., it's a positive selling point and an implicit means of control).
I don't see many defections from Apple over this announcement, but then again, I don't see any reasons to go over from Android devices unless you were already in the market for an Apple phone.

Once again behind the curve. Epect even more dumbass lawsuits to catch up
From the I-killer
I think their biggest update was IOS 6 which included tons of features (catch up to S3 features) that not too many people would notice and use them anyway. The only obvious is the front face camera and 4G, but may drag down by small screen.
I'm no fanboy obviously but it is a nice phone. The specs are decent but nothing innnovative and the biggest downside to me was no NFC. It is in fact the future especially with VZW and Isis coming together.

They tried to compete with NFC by using pass book where it stored a bunch of virtual credit card and I guess the cashier have to use the scanner to scan the code from the phone. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Using glass/metal doesn't mean build quality. The iPhone 4/4S can't even survive a single drop and is fragile, that's low build quality.
Samsung phones may have plastic but are extremely durable and well built.

So the specs were released for the Samsung Nexus S and I am very disappointed.
1GHz Cortex A8 (Hummingbird) processor
16GB iNAND flash memory
The AMOLED Screen should be nice, the only thing that is nice about this phone.
It is basically a Galaxy S with Gingerbread ROM. More internal memory.
It will be a nice phone, but I expected a dual core processor.
I hate non physical buttons as my N1 had lots of issues with them.
I honestly don't see myself upgrading to this phone...
No 4G, No Front Face Camera, and a Samsung built phone.
I will stick with my MyTouch4G and I think the rumors of developing for the G2/MT4G were gonna stop when the Nexus S was released were just that rumors. There will be development for it... but it will be to set up CM7 (Gingerbread) for older phones.
It has a front facing camera and has capabilities to run HSDPA
It does have the FFC, but no hsdpa+. I still think it fails. STILL NO LED NOTIFICATIONS EITHER!!
It does have a front facing camera. I was holding out on getting the MyTouch 4G for this phone. Now I'm still pretty torn on which I should get. This is really unsettling!

Ya I was wrong about the FFC but still no HSPA+.... that sucks...
I am very disappointed in this phone, and in Gingerbread. I was expecting a lot of wow in both and I don't see it. I'm not saying it won't have major speed improvements, but I thought GB was supposed to be a UI gangster =D. Oh well there's always next year (HoneyComb).
The Nexus S is simply a US version of the Euro Galaxy S with stock Android on board, NFC chipset, downgraded Bluetooth connectivity, no 720p video capture and no removable storage (no SD card). Compared to the MT4G it has less RAM (mt4g = 768mb nexus = 512mb), no hspa+ capability. So in my opinion the only upside to the nexus S is stock Android w/ up to date OS upgrades from Google, and 16gb of on board storage.

I really don't get why they fingered Samsung to build the Next Nexus device. Maybe because they build phones like Apple.... With trendy advertisement and the illusion of awe. Lol. Only Apple can sell millions of people a 10 in pad that does nothing more than the average smart phone out there..

No doubt money was the motivation, which does surprise me. Google is not afraid to spend money. You would think as open as google is with their VERY FAT wallet, they would have not chosen the cheaply made plastic device as opposed to the metal and durable devices for their very own Nexus Series. I guess I just dream of the solid build of metal and glass we ask love on our MT4G, with a 4.3 screen, and no physical buttons.
I understand their reasons for the choice, I just don't understand the reasons of their choices. Lol.

It's quite possible that Samsung used the success of the Galaxy S series to seal the deal with Google. We all know about the serious issues with Galaxy S phones. However, they sold millions of units worldwide and have established brand recognition. I'm certain that Google took that into consideration when awarding Samsung the Nexus contract.
Moreover, it appears that Samsung used a different GPS antenna in the Nexus S than in the Galaxy S, and got rid of the RFS system. It's quite possible that Google had a lot of say in it. In fact, the replacement of the GPS antenna clearly suggests that the faulty GPS in the Galaxy S phones is a hardware defect.

Samsung has established brand recognition within the android community...and it is not good. Specifically within the developer crowd, so it seems counterproductive to make a developer phone from a company that most developers have sworn to stay away from.
I think I made a right decision getting MT4 after I heard NS won't have memory card support and AMOLED.
Not Having a SD will make it difficult to MOD/Hack
I'm sorry but I love Google I've had every developer phone hated to sell my nexus one but the Nexus S is not spiking my interest at all. It is lacking toooooo much. Plus the MT4G has been upgrading pretty quickly it's already rooted and I know CM won't let us down on Gingerbread GO ANDROID

Agreed. Chalk me up as a member of the Android community who will not be buying any more Samsung phones. However, money definitely talks, and I'm sure that factor definitely came into play.
Samsung is a powerful consumer name so there's "cred" there. Also, Google may well not have wanted to put too many eggs in the HTC basket. You get a LOT better support from your vendors if they know they are not single source. So it may have had a lot less to do with unit cost and a lot more to do with reminding HTC they are not the only game in town (my opinions differ but I have to use the device, not write contracts with the vendor).
Overall the Nexus S is better than I would have expected from Samsung. Their "cred" comes with a lot of "consumer grade" baggage; I generally avoid their products. It is probably unfair at this point to call Samsung "cheap junk", but no one is going to accuse them of building high end equipment either.
Comparison wise: I waited about 7 months for project emerald, driving everyone around me only somewhat more crazy than normal in the process. I got the Glacier on the release date and cannot say a single bad thing about it. It is a worthy example of the ultra-high quality I expect from HTC.
I bought a behold the day it came out and dealt with its problems. I had a stock vibrant for 4 days when it started with its problems. I will never buy samsung again. Can't believe google allowed a company known for defects to produce their next flagship. Ill stick to my mt4g till something that actually beats it comes out.

PS - No SD card, no HSPA+, I can not believe no sd card. I always rave about the Nexus One to anyone who will listen, because of that I wanted the Nexus S real bad but I am a real nut when it comes to cell phones. I will probably figure some way of buying that damn thing anyways.

Same here...
I'm surprised they didn't bump the camera specs by at least a bit. I get that MegaPixels aren't everything. But in the world of tech, megapixel numbers do actually make a difference to the general public.
I was also expecting a little bit more ground breaking design. Or ground breaking something.
This phone feels drastically short on some key areas.
No Plus screen?
Camera is more software upgrade than hardware.
Not only lack of software buttons...but PHYSICAL home button? At least go full capacitive like the Skyrocket.
The "Siri-like" features already feel like they are old news. They shouldn't be a major draw. And as somebody who had Siri, it gets old fast.
This just really isn't a pretty phone...looks almost plain and boring...or just generally unoriginal. A little Galaxy, a little Nexus, that's about it.
I have to say it...I think they left the door wide open for Apple to amaze people with the next iPhone keynote. This announcement felt like a lot of smoke and mirrors to cover up that there really is barely anything new with this phone at all.
In one bit of news though...I noticed Touchwiz had some new looks to it. Didn't look like enough to call it Touchwiz 5, but more like a 4.1. Interested if we will get it at some point.
Ground breaking news would be .. 12mp + camera .. whether or not they are able to keep the quad-core for 4G/LTE (unlike HTC's flop) .. don't really care about the rest.

Well, honestly this is probably part of it. There is probably quite a bit of non-competing clauses and patent issues mingled in there. And the Apple load keeps them so busy it's probably harder than it seems to work on their own unique stuff. They make a wonderful CPU or screen for Apple...and then probably lock themselves out of doing any of that on their own products. So they have to find ways around it. I can tell you my company deals with similar type issues sometimes. Making money off your competition isn't always as wonderful as it sounds.
Well .. the GOODNESS just disappeared from my point of view.
Found the full specs up on PhoneArena (http://www.phonearena.com/phones/Samsung-Galaxy-S-III_id6330).. confirmed what I feared .. nothing new at all, same as the HTC One series.
Quad-Core yes .. NO LTE SUPPORT !!!!!!
12MP + camera NO .. same ole 8MP and 1.9MP !!!!!! I thought Samsung was one of the pioners of cameras !!!!!! Well, they certainly ain't showing it.
Sticking with my Skyrocket .. until something REALLY IMPRESSIVE is released.
Also, I doubt the home button would be there when it comes over seas to the US. It always turns into full capacitive when it hits here. So atleast it won't be nearly as ugly as the international version. But still.. nothing made me want to go out and buy the s3 at all
When buying a phone its not all about the numbers, if the software behind the camera improves the camera over the S2, then who cares if its an 8 or 12 or 41 megapixel camera? If it has DOUBLE the processing and graphics power of the S2 how is that disappointing? If it makes a huge improvement over google voice actions to make it MUCH more user friendly, again how is this disappointing? I'd say it is the best android phone, and definitely better than the iphone. So for at least the next 2-3 months until the iPhone 5 is released this is the undisputed champ of smartphones. And all people can say is disappointment because there isn't a 5 ghz processor and a 50mp camera? From the reviews i've read of people ACTUALLY USING THE PHONE instead of looking over spec sheets, they all love it. Spec sheets mean nothing when your phone is in use, they are just talking points. If the phone works beautifully (all indications are that it does) then why are we disappointed?
Samsung takes a leaf out of Apple's book & recycles the design of its last flagship device.
Admit it's just a GS3 with a few extra bells & whistles, upgrade the innards check, upgrade the camera check & alter the screen a bit. Bang you have yourself a new flagship, market the hell out of it & watch the sales roll in.
At least HTC made a big change between the One & the One X, especially in design and innovated in the camera rather than just banging more megapixels on it.
That said it still looks a very strong device & I might get one.

The S4 looks JUST like the S3... which ALSO looks just like a mini Note 2. (I owned both).
I don't think any of them are ugly, but I don't find them sexy either. That is all just personal preference, but to say the S3 is ugly, and the Note 2 and S4 are beautiful is just.. well, silly. Your analysis is ... flawed... to say the least.
The S4 definitely is a bump up from the S3 spec wise, no question, but in the looks department it is mid size between the S3 and Note II, nothing more, nothing less. Only very minor aesthetic change.
See Sig - I have owned most of their recent phones. I'm not speculating, I had the Note, Note II, and S3 as well as others.

You're nit picking. As a whole the S IV looks exactly like the S III and though the internals are slightly buffed, externally (which is what 95% of the public cares about) it's the same. Apple gets away with it because their chassis is admittedly beautiful, but Samsung is sticking to this flimsy, cheap plastic design which is not a head turner. They dropped the ball with this one and I think HTC will gain ground as they introduced a beautiful phone with the HTC One.

Constructive rebuttal. The phone is flimsy, and the quality of material used is sub par. If you're used to such things then it's fine. I've had all of the Galaxy S phones and now own the S3. As an owner it's disheartening to own a phone with such lackluster material in comparison to far more premium build phones that are equally as powerful and cost the same amount. Why don't I just switch? I probably won't and I'll wait for the S V as it'll be a worth while jump in speed and efficiency.
I just have to agree, in my own opinion, the S4 didn't make HUGE design changes. On that, I think most agree. I'd still love to have it. Though, Not as much as I would like to have the HTC One.

The one looks nice...but its missing the ad card...that is a necessity for me and many others...I could care less about removable battery, I just want my sd slot...I love music too much, streaming lowers the quality and 32gb on board just isn't enough when each song is 10-20mbs...
Anyways...ill admit, I am a Samsung fanboy....I hate HTC - they are a pain to get setup for Roma compared to Samsung devices...unlocking bootloader, s-off...just a pain. I gave HTC a try and I don't think ill ever give them another...

Plastic IS NOT A SUB-PAR MATERIAL. There are many areas other than cost that Samsung's "plastic" is superior to aluminum in a mobile device application. Hell, car manufacturers figured that out a long time ago.
As long as the screen is more durable than on the S3, I doubt the build is "cheap" except to the uneducated.

[Guide] Headphone/Earphone Buying
I don't understand the hate for plastic, it's far more durable than metal for the function of a phone. I've actually got the One now, it's waiting to be exchanged for the GS4 but sadly that has been delayed until May now. When using the One I was constantly worried about dropping it, I kept checking for scratched, it just made me paranoid. I even went searching for cases and I realized I hate the people who go on about the design of the phone and then wrap it in an ugly cheap case anyways. I put the frigging phone in my pocket, nothing else there and it gets a scuff some how. I realized I cannot live with the One, it's not fun to use and I'm constantly worried about it getting damaged. The thing that swung me exchanging it though was seeing how you wont be repairing it yourself, it's so poorly designed. I mean in the past if I've dropped a phone, I go to ebay, buy the parts and repair it myself, you cannot do that with the One. On top of that the One gets so hot, it's like one big heat sink, it makes playing games so uncomfortable.
So I've put the One away waiting for it to be exchanged and went back to my Nokia. Plastic is so much nicer, it has more grip, it keeps the heat in one location so you can just not hold it there, it doesn't scuff or scratch like a *****. I've looked at the GS4 teardown and the plastic rim is easy to take off and replace and so is the back cover obviously. I can not worry about dropping it or scratching it or the condition of my battery sitting in a heatsink sandwich like on the One. I can just easily replace all that stuff if I do damage it.
For me plastic is the better material by far and I don't see it as a down side. I'm getting bored of every review saying how the One is better and all they mention is the design. I've got one, it isn't well designed, it isn't even well made, I've got giant gaps between the glued on speaker grills and the plastic on the phone.
I just don't get it, but whatever!
Along the same lines of design complaints, I love how many ppl diss the design saying it looks exactly like the S3 and there isn't anything special about it. So why don't ppl say the same thing about the iphone that has only seen 1 true design change in 6 years? Not hating on Apple, I just don't see what all the fuss is about the S4 design being "dull" when other major phones don't change as drastically either.

Ttoally agree
I could understand if the aluminum vs plastic debate was made into the subset, lesser point of contention that it is. But multiple reviews, mainly from American websites, have put it front and center as one of the biggest issues and one of the most important if not THE most important distinction between the phones. Like, seriously? Most of these reviews skim over features, barely juggle the cameras, and no real mention of Mobeam. So they insert the classic filler argument to get page views, and no new information is shown, and no real analysis done.
The only thing "cheap" going on here is the reporting. If you're reviewing a unit and you have limited access to the phone and can't do a proper review, just say so. Don't take up paragraphs to explain this "war" that few people really care about whatsoever, and especially don't make up 1/3 the problems with the phone as "it doesn't feel premium"; there's far more concerning issues to list besides that.
And it's not like cases are rare among mainstream buyers: https://www.npd.com/wps/portal/npd/us/news/press-releases/pr_120821/
Custom cases, skins, and other phone accessories make up a multi-billion dollar industry in of itself. The idea that "naked phones" are the standard and everyone should adhere to it is asinine. I would rather put a real kick ass Breaking Bad print on the back cover of my Galaxy S4 then use the generic black mist for instance.
Due to all the hype, I went out the other day to check out the HTC One and I was honestly underwhelmed. Premium feel? I don't think so. Maybe I'm weird but the One actually kind of felt like plastic to me, LOL~ The aluminum isn't even very solid and dense and it felt only a bit more thicker than my can of Rockstar I drink every day. If HTC were gonna do aluminum, they should've at least used higher quality aluminum like the one on the iPhone 5. At least the iPhone 5 does feel a bit premium. I appreciate aluminum for my car's suspension parts but don't care for it on my phone.
Sure the HTC One looks premium but I would feel bad covering up that "premium" look with a case. But if I don't put it in a case, I'll feel even worse when it gets scratched. If any dust gets under you case, its going to slaughter the aluminum finish on the One.

Because people are dumb.
Most of my previous phones were aluminum and *solid*... That's no indication of durability as screen breaks and dents are still commonplace with metal phones. Removable battery, cooler to hold, lighter, less prone to visible scratches etc.
A vast majority of smartphone users put there phones in hideous cases anyway so the entire *premium feel* argument is fluff.
Bottom line something feeling more dense doesn't means is better quality. Just pure subjective nonsense.
If htc, sony, and apple fanboys dont bash the design, what else they have to bring down samsung? No nothing, samsung is way beyond all of them in rest of the departments.

I'm of the view that the whole plastic thing just comes down to personal choice. For me the most lacking quality in the the s4 is the abundance of lag

Every time someone uses a car metaphor, it's almost always complete rubbish. Aside from the fact that it's the paint you're scratching on the car, even if it were all aluminum, the "fix" doesn't carry over to a phone. You going to use chemical treatment/sanding on your phone to help with those scratches? The alternative is you send it back for a replacement (and warranties normally don't cover tiny scratches on the phone), or cover up the scratches with a case/skin (and then what's the point?).

It's just way too hard for some of them to accept that in some circles the One is being touted as the better phone.
What the SGS 4 wins at, it's a fractional win. What the One wins at, it's almost a night and day difference. IE: Speaker quality, call quality, audio capturing capability & design. And no amount of crying is going to change that.

Removable battery, sd card, tons of more sensors, bigger screen, can be used with gloves and dozens of software features. It goes both ways.
Same could be said about all your audio stuff, it's fractional. Except for the stereo speakers.

Yeah, HTC is breaking ground with those 2 million units. Samsung's shipping it's next 10 million batch soon I believe, after several carriers sold out of pre-orders. Keep telling yourself the speakers and aluminum design are all you need to have a good phone while the rest of us enjoy the aspects that "don't matter" like camera resolution, sensors, good software features, expandable memory, removable battery, screen size, headphone quality, Mobeam tech, and better hardware all around.
But you can record some really fly videos at the Slipknot concert, so there's that.

Lol this isn't an armed conflict. I would hate to some of you guys in a real tense situation. Honestly if someone has made their decision do you really think what you just said matters? The reason I didn't go s4 because I have the note 10.1 and I just don't care for it or touchwiz. But I still follow what samsung does because THEY do matter.
Competition is good. And if Samsung put together a product I liked I would buy it.
The fanboyism in all the forums is just comical.

There are two reasons why a member comes to a forum
1. He is somewhat interested in the phone of that forum ( I never visited the HTC one v forum for example cause I'm not interested in it)
2. Cause he/she wants to troll ( I wouldn't troll at a One V forum cause it doesn't compare with the S4 for example)
One of these 2 reasons brought you here, either you are secretly in love with the S4 or you're a troll which means you fear the S4.

I don't care to change his mind, really. Just pulling up the facts; you can nip at the heel all you want but competition usually implies near-equal standing, and last I checked, there's a 157 billion dollar difference between the two companies, and one is posting poor results this quarter while the other is gaining. You're right, you fanboys are pretty comical.

As I know you like flashing many different types of ROMs...are you sure you'd want to give that up?!
That is very cool though that it'll finally fit in with some of the other flagship phones as far as build quality, and that camera is obviously sweet!
I just don't know it I could give up root and a custom recovery... Very tough call. I'm thinking it will get rooted... I hope! Have you donated to the massive root bounty yet?

I prefer plastic. Better shock resistance and signal reception. Given Samsungs rep for radio reception, yikes.
Metal might also mean no replaceable battery.
God this would be so lame. It seems crazy for them to launch a flagship device followed by the same device, but better, in the same year. How insulting of them...

That's strange logic. The same device, just better specs, in the same year is not logical. Especially when the current s5 is already selling out the iphone. Would be better tactics to hype up next year's s6. if they do do this it will have nothing to do with technology as the new components could have been added to the current s5. It would be purely for a large monetary gain.

It does seem like a low blow, but I guess whatever keeps the money machine turning.
I can understand the draw of metal phones and I may be in the minority, but I actually prefer plastic. Metal looks nice and everything, but in my use the paint on metal phones inevitably chips off or they become severely scratched (Droid), or you have to put a case on them which defeats the purpose. I'd actually be happy not to have the chrome bezel on the S5 for that matter.
I certainly wouldn't be surprised to see this, they could launch it several months from now to keep heat on the iPhone 6. It would also satisfy the many people who want a higher quality finish (who are likely more careful than I).

These are Korean only variant for testing next generation modem chipset.. same thing happened to S2 and S2 HD LTE (release as AT&T Skyrocket in USA later). I don't thing any other country will run wideband plus channel bonding together anytime soon.

And of course no metal S5 sorry guys
---------- Post added at 02:16 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:59 AM ----------
Main reason why this 906S/K/L devices are surfaced is largest carrier in South Korea, SKT, under reputation issue now. They advertised LTE-A (Channel bonding together 20MHz + 20MHz from different frequencies) as their main benefit. However recently they refarmed their 800 area to 40MHz wideband, and since no devices can use 40MHz + 20MHz simultaneously most users switched back to wideband 40MHz only mode. No speed differences but people are complaining about getting their LTE-A branded devices crippled.
While im happy with my S5 for now, im kind of upset if this turns out to be true, especially within the time frame. I'd be fine with a holiday season release or something but if it turns out to have better specs (Snapdragon 805, 3Gb Ram, QHD) maybe a bigger battery and the same footprint in a metal body, most would argue that they prefer the plastic and some would say metal. I would just be more pissed that these werent in the plastic S5. The 3 GB of ram would of helped with some of the lag the S5 has. I could do without the screen but the 805 processor is top notch. Sucks that a lot of us who adopted the S5 will miss out on this.

Better is in the mind of the beholder, since having a device that will likely: be easier to crack the screen with drops, have weaker reception and no replaceable battery does not in any stretch seem better to me.
Looking like no 32GB S5 (metal or plastic), so no harm no foul anyway here. Here is hoping an "S5.5" is released this fall with an 805 SoC and 32GB :fingers-crossed: Yeah right

This could also mean that unless it's built in, there would be no decent case with Wireless Charging.
Update: Apparently the Prime is not a mass release device afterall due to an expensive display and design.
Preupdate
The S5 Prime is real and apparently coming to the US. Looks like Samsung are pulling out all stops to stunt the iPhone 6 (there are two models) launching (4.7" and 5.5") and are expected to sell huge. Apparently there will be 128GB models as an option for the first time.
The sad thing is the Prime will probably be a 16GB version only and also be locked down like the S5. Looks like my S4 will be the first device I have used for two years since..... I do not think I have ever had a phone for two straight years. Close, but not a full 24 months so far.
Good thing the S4 is still a great device
