since there is pretty much only 1 stable rom on here, was is it worth unlocking to use it? would you suggest unlocking to use it?
lets here it.... i see the log for zeus but im just not sure if its worth it yet.

why not unlock now? only take few seconds, then try out Zeus' Rom and use it as a reference (best rom). Later when you got the JB, you can compare to this rom to see if JB indeed faster or better? we maybe surprising.

+1 to this. I too thought about waiting for the JB Rom to unlock then thought the following:
1. While the OTA for JB will only work if you have not unlocked, I have never had a device (phone or tablet) where the latest update wasn't made available by the dev community pretty darn fast for people that had done things that turned off OTA. And by fast I mean usually before the OTA was even available for devices in my area.
2. Moving now to Zeus gives me more benchmarks by which to measure the JB ROM, which also is not a bad thing
3. I know I am going to unlock anyway, so why pretend I am not, or set myself artificial barriers
I had a Samsung gs2 and now a gs3. I always put on them custom roms without bricks and I'd buy a tablet that can give me the same freedom in changing roms, kernels and recovery without bricking. But here in this forum I read some threads about bricks and dead tablets so I'm thinking about buying this tablet or a Samsung tab, also If no one of them have fullhd display
I'm too scared about putting custom roms because I don't want a €500 heavy paper..

Yes, I agree with you, but fear not with Zeus rom. It's very close to STOCK with performance tweak/battery life saver, he tried to keep it as close as stock as possible that's why it's bug free and very stable. His I/O on this rom is sick = 20, while I don't think Jelly Bean can beat this. If you talk about performance, the only advantage of JB over Zeus rom is 60fps and probably smoother overall GUi experience. I'm waiting for Zeus for the JB then if Zeus rom stills better then I will unlock the bootloader. Currently I only root, but my tab is running pretty fine, thanks to browser2ram, force 2D render and I/O scheduler SetCPU.
Don't forget about the stock deodexed + tweaks rom.
I'm running that one over zeus as it just seems more stable and smooth.
I unlocked within a week.
**** it... zeus, here i come!

Trying to decide if I want to go through with unlocking bootloader or just staying rooted for the time being. For those of you that have already done it, are the ROMs worth it at this point? Should I just hold out until AOSP is working a little better? I have also heard that phones have gone dead after unlocking and needing replaced. I got the device second hand and am not with AT&T so that really isn't an option for me. That is what's probably stopping me as of now. Also immediately after rooting my phone decided to shut off and took a minute to come back on, not sure if that is normal or what.
Guess I'm just looking for opinions and persuasion. Any feedback would be appreciated, thanks.
I'm running AOKP and its perfectly capable of running as a daily driver. Its much smoother than the Sense ROMs.
Yes thats normal after rooting your device.
And I've never heard about devices going dead after unlock...
Wasn't sure if the powering off was normal or what because the root window closed, the phone fully booted gave me the "android upgrading" popup then powered off.
Heard a couple people saying their phones just went dead a couple days after unlocking. Not sure if that was what it was related to but it didn't happen until after.
HTC devices aren't my forte by any means though, much more comfortable with Samsung phones and the way they do things.
I too am used to Sammy, HTC and there se purity is all new to me. But I have unlocked and am running cleanROM. Totally worth and phone hasn't died yet lol. I have never heard of phones dying from unlock either.

One day you will sit down with your bootloader unlocked and new rom installed and ponder what took you so long. Might backhand yourself in the process.
Developer's are already making huge leaps when it comes to roms, mods etc. I haven't been able to flash anything in a week and yet I was loving cleanrom for it's speed, stability and extra features. Plenty of other developers too kicking ass. As rohan mentioned you already have AOKP and CM9.
BTW i was one who had phone die on me but it had nothing to do with unlocked bootloader.
Think you guys talked me into it! Really hate this stupid recent button, should have been menu. The bloat on stock is also ridiculous.

+1 for AOKP (or the CM9 port). They still have a few quirks (like keeping your dial tones on or call audio dies, some issues with music playback) but will work day to day. I haven't regretted it flashing AOKP for one second though.
I might give AOKP a try tonight. Currently running clean ROM light. I'm actually liking Sense 4 so I'm not in a rush for AOSP.
I'm running clean rom 2.3 dev and its a great rom! I am wanting to try aokp or cm9 but I'm waiting a little to decide. Decisions, decisions.

+1 for running cleanrom 2.3, I have been hearing a lot of great words on cm9 will give that a shot soon. OT, you should unlock now. Don't wait, the ROMs are absolutely worth it and nothing is better than making a phone your own, and not just some phone you can buy at the store.
I actually unlocked not long after posting this. Been running CleanROM Lite and it's fantastic. Waiting for AOKP to be a little more stable before flashing it.
Try installing Cleanrom 2.6
I have this installed and it's super fast and smooth.. very stable.. a lot better than stock Rom.. sogo ahead n root n unlock ur bootloader
I am currently running the CM9 Alpha 3 ROM and love it. Well worth the trouble of unlocking.
Hello everyone,
First let me say that I am a noob at this so please be patient with my inquiry. I have applied custom rom on a Coby Kryos 7042, but those are for my kids... And I'm not overly impressed with what that got me, but like I said, those tabs are for my kids.
The purpose of this topic is find out what ROM I should flash to my stock TF300t.
There are numerous ROMs on this board and I cant determine which one to apply.
I'm not a serious gamer, so selecting a ROM because it makes games run faster/smoother is of no use for me.
This is what I would like to see from a custom rom...
Make my overall experience better with the TF300t. I'm not complaining about the TF300t, so far I love it. Can it be better? Probably.
Can a custom ROM make the transistions from page/screen to page/screen faster? If so, which ROM?
Can a custom ROM increase my WIFI range of the TF300, if the TF300 wifi range is not fully utilized? I hope that made sense.
Which ROM on this board is close to error/bug free?
If I apply a custom ROM will I be able to use JB when ASUS releases it?
I'm not asking who is the 'best' at creating a custom ROM, for that is subjective. I just want some help picking out a good one for me.
I've already rooted my 300 and I've downloaded the unlock boot tool from ASUS, but I havent unlocked the tab yet.
TIA,
B

You can get JB officially within a month... Would be semi pointless to put a custom rom on so close to Jelly Bean being released for the TF300T
If you've only just bought the tab, I would recommend not unlocking it yet - make sure there are no defects before you unlock as this will void your warranty. Once you're happy with it, go for it
I plan to wait for the official release of Jelly Bean before I unlock. If I dont like the offcial release I will unlock and try a custom ROM.

Like some of the other posters I would not unlock so soon especially if you are satisfied with the performance. I waited until after my 30 period return window before I unlocked. However, I can only speak for one from since it is the only from that I have tried on this device. Seanz hydro ponic rom is fantastic and I am completely satisfied with it. I have run cm9 and aokp on other devices and if you like customization these are pretty good.

since no one actually answered your questions....here we go.
make the experience better? usually custom ROMs get rid of all the bloat and un-necessary stuff inside the OS. this usually speeds it up a bit...it may be noticable it may not. they also usually throw in some tweaks and customization. i am going to take AOKP for instance....since i am very familiar with that.
it allows for overclocking and undervolting, custom toggles in the notification area, custom shortcuts from the lock screen, adding buttons to the bottom navigation bar and changing their colors and icons and the later ones have a theme engine built in so changing the entire look of the tab is as easy as downloading an app and hitting a button.
make the home screen transitions faster.....usually custom ROMs ditch the stock launcher in favor of a custom one (nova, apex, or trebuchet) all of these have a setting in which you can tweak the transition speed as well as pretty much anything else you want to change. nova launcher and apex launcher (my personal fav) are downloadable and install-able from the play store.
increase wifi range? this one i am not sure of...i haven't really looked into it since i am pretty happy with my range, but i would guess that they don't increase wifi range.
bug free? anything based off stock will be good...however, these are custom ROMs with not much testing...there will be bugs...some you my notice, others you may not....its just the name of the game. i usually dont notice any myself until others point them out. it still doesn't bother me...AOKPs customizations and tweaks outweigh the small bugs here an there....IMO.
use official JB OTA...yes i believe you can download and flash an official OTA that you can get from asus' site...someone correct me if i am wrong.
so there you go. you can make your decision from that...but like others have said, it may be a good idea to hold off unlocking for a bit. if you absolutely cannot live without some of the customizations of say...AOKP, go ahead and flash away....but if slapping on a custom launcher and speeding up that screen transition is enough, just do that and hold off until official JB is pushed to us....that is my plan....at least for the time being (CM10 is making it hard to pass up though )
For the sake of answering the question I will go against previous posts and suggest that you unlock and flash a rom. Make a backup of your stock rom before flashing and then you can always revert back and manually update to JB when it arrives...or wait a few days after it's released for a JB based rom. Until that time I suggest flashing Asus-Hydro. It has all the stock features, is bug free as far as I can tell, and adds noticeable speed to the tf300. Not sure if it improves wifi distance, but it definitely speeds up homescreen transitions and greatly improves browser performance.
Make backups, follow instructions, and enjoy.

If you took the time to read any of the other threads relating to JB you would have maybe come across a section on XDA that referred to "Tablets that will get JB 4.1"
In that thread there was a link that pointed to a reliable tech review site that got a official answer from Asus stating "Asus has build a reputation of being 1st and we don't want to disappoint our users"
That being said JB 4.1 is officially launched mid-July that is currently ... wow ... Now!
Asus will be quick on the official release to update their Tablets as they clearly stated by "We have a Reputation of being 1st"
So there is nothing officially stated if that's what you were looking for but within a month is my best estimate taking into consideration their track record for updates.
Hey guys!, I recently purchased an Atrix2, at the moment I can't decide if I'm more worried or excited (locked bootloader and all), lets just say I'm glad my investment wasn't too big. I'm coming from a Desire Z which was totally and completely hacked way before I bought one (Ended up owning 3 of them, 1 of which didn't have warranty... Ended up being a big investment, long story), so hopefully stock isn't too bad . I have some questions tho and if anyone would be willing to answer I'd be grateful, I've been lurking around here for a few days, if these questions have already been asked I apologize.
When my Atrix2 arrives what should I do with it, root it and install a 2.3.x rom, leave it stock, not root it, install an ICS leak?
How does overclocking work, I'd like to get it to 1.2ghz (GS2 speed), are we able to do that on a locked bootloader?
I know there's been no official word, but do you think the Atrix2 will get JellyBean? When?
How close are we to cracking that bootloader? I've been reading the threads and they're kinda hard to follow, there seems to be massive news on the horizon and everything looking good but then another thread says the complete opposite, how close are we to cracking that sucker open, and in your opinion do you think Moto will unlock the Atrix2 with their web unlock tool that voids the warranty?
I noticed there are 2 hardware versions (ME and MB I think), is everything compatible with each other or do I have to specifically make sure each rom and hack is for my version?
From long term owners how do you like the phone?
From people using ICS how is it? Compared to the AOSP and AOKP roms for other devices, is it..... bearable so to speak ?.
How many CM7/AOSP like mods can we have, I really hate using phones without the widgets in the pulldown status bar.
Coming from a very thick 3.7" 512mb ram 800mhz CPU (Tho capable of running JellyBean fairly well, and being QWERTY to be fair), I think the leap to 4.3" 1gb ram and 1.2ghz dual core will be very nice. The locked bootloader is a big let down but I hope the geniuses that are the Android Dev community come up with some wonderful hack and we're all running CM10 very soon, or at least that the ICS build is good enough and we can get some decent mods.

A) This is entirely your preference.
How does overclocking work, I'd like to get it to 1.2ghz (GS2 speed), are we able to do that on a locked bootloader?
A) See my guides in my signature -for Overclocking
I know there's been no official word, but do you think the Atrix2 will get JellyBean? When?
A) I seriously doubt it. We're one of the last to receive ICS, and still waiting for the official OTA to roll out in the US.
A) The developers have been working on this for almost a year, doesn't look promising at this point, but as soon as some advances are made, you'll read about them here. No, Moto will likely NOT add the A2 to the devices list for unlocking.
I noticed there are 2 hardware versions (ME and MB I think), is everything compatible with each other or do I have to specifically make sure each rom and hack is for my version?
A) The MB865 is intended for use on AT&T within the USA, while the ME865 has a different radio, sound device, WIFI chipset, and a few other hardware differences. It is basically a different device, with "close enough" hardware. I would not try using things from one for the other though, because even the ME865 has 3 different versions, with some small differences in hardware, but you also really need to watch for firmware compatibility.
From long term owners how do you like the phone?
A) My opinion is its decent, we have amazing devs, and they've done so much for this device.
From people using ICS how is it?
A) ICS completely changes the phone, in every way that's good.
Compared to the AOSP and AOKP roms for other devices, is it..... bearable so to speak ?.
A) They are way better than stock Motorubbish ROM.
How many CM7/AOSP like mods can we have, I really hate using phones without the widgets in the pulldown status bar?
A) Most every custom ROM (if not all) available for the A2 has drop down toggles.

There's a couple of ROMs that still keep in tact some or most of the Blur apps and UI, but most are "de-blurred". One of my favorites was Lithium ROM and SCv6, but that's all based on personal preferences. Some are odexed, others de-odexed. Just browse through the development section and look at each of the ROM's threads, they'll all have screenshots, features, and installation instructions. Some are flash able zips, others are CWM backup images. Everything you'll need to know in deciding on a ROM is in the dev section. Nothing wrong with flashing and trying each of them out, until you find one you really like...
Edit: I just looked, and seems like there's about four ROMs that will require the user to be on the leaked ICS version before flashing there's still several great ROMs for GB though!

The official ICS OTA update will not allow you the ability to flash back to GB, at least not yet. With the "leaked" ICS, you can. But, trying with any of the newer leaked updates for ICS will turn your new phone into a new soft brick...

I believe there's only two ROMs that are built off the leaked ICS version (SCv7 and Lunar Eclipse, though there may be more- I haven't clicked the through the development section much lately) but just wait until you get your phone, and see what version it is. Likely it will be SEARET, but I'm not certain.

I've had my infinity for a couple of weeks now and I'm really frustrated with the lag. I want to unlock it but I've heard stories of people who owned one and a manufacturer defect didn't appear for a month. For example a couple of black lines appearing that won't go away. So far I haven't found any defects but I'm worried that if I unlock then something will happen and I can't return it.

In the meantime while you're deciding whether to unlock or not, go into "Settings / Developer Options" and put a check in "Force GPU rendering". Then under "Window animation scale", Transition animation scale" and "Animator duration scale", disable all of those.
I go tired of the slideshow animations, so I disabled them all. My tablet has the appearance of snappiness now. Rooting, unlocking, and romming my tablet didn't get rid of the horrible slideshow. Disabling animations does.
Thanks for the tip. How likely are issues to show up? And if they do will asus cover it? If it's not very likely then ill unlock and install cromi

A bit of a tough call...boils down to luck of the draw so to speak.
Asus may give you grief even with a locked tab.
My own experience:
Had the Infinity since July 2012.
Minor light bleed at first: diminished to a point where it isn't noticeable.
Some clicking around the glass at first: one spot now above the power port-no issue for me since this tablet is in a Bobj case.
Unlocked and re-rommed with original CleanROM around October\November or whenever JB first was pushed.
Few months to go and my tab will be a year old so if I make it with no hardware failures unlocking was the best option for me.
*note
I dropped this tab off a nightstand 4 weeks ago and dinged the corner (it was in a light folio) it never skipped a beat.
Bottom line
It's your call
Ok thanks. Disabling the animations and enabling force gpu rendering solved my problems with lag. So for now I have no need to unlock. My plan now is to wait a month or maybe 2 and then unlock if no issues come up. Thanks for the advice

I'm aware to not make a lot of friends in saying this ... but I found the stock JB ROM a decent system. For me it has not really been as bad as you can read here a lot. Have to say though that I never had to use the ICS stock version, which seemingly really was not a good choice.
I have unlocked mine and flashed a custom ROM, but in my case more for the fun of it. Using the stock ROM until your warranty runs out is a good option. You might look into rooting it anyway, which will not harm your warranty.

Why would you not have friends by saying stock is good?
Non-stock ROMs have seen tremendous success their ongoing development is just icing on the cake.
I'm sure there are thousands of happy users that have no idea that aftermarket ROMs even exist.

Just thought because everyone is beating on the fact that only custom ROMs make this thing fly. Again, I'm a very new Infinity user, my only experience with stock ROMs is from using the JB 10.4.4.25 version. And this is a good choice in my opinion.

The stock ROM is mixed bag -- some have actually preferred ICS to JB, and there are some that prefer it the other way around. Nonetheless, I'd be surprised if you wouldn't prefer custom ROMs to the stock versions once you unlock and flash away.
I do underwrite fully your statement that if the stock ROM doesn't bother you, it's not that of an immediate need to unlock and flash a custom ROM, especially if you are an easily frightened Infinity owner.
I know this forum seems aimed at custom ROMs.
Certainly no need if one is pleased with the tablet in it's pure form.
XDA is a site that used to forge development vs. troubleshooting.
It's all good tho...everyone enjoys helping as much as possible.
No worries
I'd say just root then install browser2ram and set that up in the stock browsers debug settings, then wait for the next update which should be in a month or so.
After the update see if you are still wanting and then decided if you want to unlock. Remember this is a techie site and people here tend to advise people to take more aggressive actions, as they are speaking from an area that they are very comfortable, but I tend to advise people like yourself to be more conservative and patient.

thanks. actually i am one of the more aggressive action types of people. i rooted my phone and installed a custom rom within an hour of getting it lol. I really want to unlock my tab because i love custom roms, however it is an expensive device and i have heard stories of the poor quality control asus has. If it weren't for that i would have unlocked it and installed cromi a few days after getting it.

Bought my 10 year old this tablet last year for Xmas and it's laggy as all get out IMO. Love my android phones and will never switch, but I also love by iPad /gasp!
I am wondering if unlocking and rom'ing this thing will really make enough difference.
I have rooted and rom'ed every phone I have ever had, but I also use them daily so I get to play around with roms and figure out whats stable and works really well. I am also a little nervous about this thing, so many instructions and various ways to do things depending on which update your on.
The tab is 4.2.1 10.6.1.24.5
Any opinions on this and/or suggestions on what roms to try out if I go for it?

Unlocking and flashing custom ROMs is a major improvement over stock. If you want stability and performance, CROMi. If you want performance and cutting edge, CM or another KK ROM.
Just be careful about what to flash and always ask questions is there is any doubt.

Thanks, think I will check it out. Wish there was a path back to stock though.

You can always reflash the stock ROM to go back to stock, but only if you haven't bricked your tablet.
Made a backup of the stock unrooted rom, then rooted and backed up the apps. Loaded up Cromi and all is working well. So far I cant say it's that much of an improvement, with the exception of browsing. Flash will be nice too.
Should I feel like its a huge improvement? Maybe I needed to pick a different kernel.
