Anyone else have this issue? It is becoming annoying...that and the issue with lag on forums is driving me crazy.
disappearing widgets...
@psufan5 -- are you still having this problem?
mine has started doing the exact same thing -- 2 out of the 5 homescreens lose ALL their widgets, not one or two widgets, but all.
did some reading up on this and it appears this issue has been around for a while (early 2010), some people have managed to restore theirs by rebooting, in my case that isn't working.
this has happened twice now in as many weeks, and is becoming a major pain.
also mentioned in various other sites was that it might be related to phone only apps, as opposed to tablet optimised ones, but again in my case that's not true -- I do have Palmary Weather, Extended Controls and Circle Launcher on my main homescreen, but I also have the built-in 'neon' clock and date & time widget and they disappear too.
I am running Revolver 2.1.2 & Clemsyn v8, but no-one else has mentioned this issue with this ROM. It happens whether the dock is connected or not. But as the issue was reported originally a year and a half ago, I think this ROM is unlikely to be the cause.
Not using APPS2SD of any form.
Any help, hints, pointers or links would be appreciated. (An actual fix would be very much appreciated!)
Never seen a single widget disappear. I don't use a lot of them, though, but I always have at least 2-3 active, sometimes more.
This exact same thing happens to me all the time. it is very annoying.
@knoxploration -- cheers mate, making me feel so much better!
@patriotaus -- know exactly how you feel -- did you ever try any of the many suggested fixes (temporary though they are)? and if so, did any of them work for you?

I've only had my TF about 2 months now, and it only started 3 weeks ago. I just wish I could pin it down to a particular app or setting. I really don't want to start all over again.
I've already frozen/uninstalled apps I bought after that time period (4 weeks to be sure), but it's still there, removed all the freebies just in case etc., etc., etc.
Searched the entire (well a microscopic part anyway) internet and tried the various suggested fixes -- to no avail.
I've just installed the latest ADW Launcher which has a desktop backup/restore option to try and at least minimise the effort involved in rebuilding my homescreens.
... the joys of computing. :0
I keep having my browsers stop, they wont finish loading and then when I touch on the address search bar or refresh button on the screen I get the force close message. I'm having problems with the stock browser and also the dolphin hd browser too. It happens after about 10 minutes and I can't find any correlation with certain sites, it's just after a little time no matter what I'm looking at. I did a search and only came across someone saying they were having a problem but it was a xoom and they were also rooted. My transformer is all stock and only about a week old. Does anyone have any suggestions or anything? Besides that I love this thing. Thanks for the help.
some sites are inaccessible without crashing to the desktop. Web browsing is one of the major use cases for the transformer. It will be nice if this geta fixed.
Are you serious? I researched tide tablet for weeks before i decided on it. I knew about the cameras and taking videos not being good, I knee there was a chance for light bleed, and also that there were some problems with hd video playback sometimes. I hadn't read anything however on browsing problems. I tried Firefox and opera along with dolphin and they all stop and crash. I don't understand why someone didn't mention this in their reviews with it being a problem. I've had no problems with light bleed, video playback and the camera is fine for me, but the browsing problem would have dissuaded me from purchasing if I would have known. Is there no fixes at all?
The problem is java script, try to disable java

On Monday I'll have my Transformer for 2 weeks. I just started having browser crashes yesterday only after a couple of minutes of browsing. This has happened on yahoo & xda. At the time I was trying to copy & paste. What I don't understand is I wasn't having problems before.
Also, I am unable to do a search on XDA. The search & keyboard come up monetarily then close.

Yes, stock & not rooted
I never get force closing pop ups but everynow and then the browser just closes... but then it depends on the website
I;m running overclocked prime
Mine is just stock, I haven't rooted mine either. I can usually browse for 10 minutes or so before mine stops then force closes. It seems strange that it just started after 2 weeks for the one person. If the problem is Java and I turn it off won't that limit some of the sites? I hate to be limited on browsing, otherwise you might as well get a dang ipad. I hope we find a fix for this it's driving me crazy.
Stock, 3.1 not rooted. The crashing is site specific. It happens with Dolphin as well. Xscope will handle the site, but it has other usability issues (like no zoom) . Do other tablets (zoom, tab 10.1,etc) have these issues? I love paying to be a beta tester.
Same problem here, browser crashes on certain webpages without a warning, switching java off solves the problem but this shouldn't be a solution
Turning off Java Script does indeed help a lot it seems - faster loading and far less crashes. As a web technology noob what do I lose w/o Java script? I browse mostly news/science/tech blogs and forums. Not to many interactive (save Facebook of course).
Any good tips on what losing JV scrips limits?
Thanks!
This has been discussed before Its a known issues (at least to us that have them) and its pretty annoying to say the least. Turning off javascript helps in two different ways (stops crashes and speeds up browsing), but some pages wont display correctly without it.
i resolved crashes with "adfree"
I've never seen my browser as prone to crash or sluggish on the transformer. The only thing I configured is to start plugins on click only (like poor man flashblock - but I prefer it this way on my desktop Chrome too). Running stock 3.1.
i wwill try the adfree and I will post my results.
I've had my Transformer for about three weeks and besides slowing down quite a bit the stock browser and Dolphin have been crashing regularly as of last week. I'm running stock 3.1 - not rooted or anything. It's gotten bad enough that I've basically stopped using it and am using my Acer W500 and iPad. I can put up with some problems in a new unit but if I had known that Honeycomb was as buggy as it seems to be so far I probably would not have purchased this.
i got mine last week, the default browser performance is unacceptable. It just crashes without any warning. Clicking comboboxes , checkboxes and even links in some cases is far too difficult to get right with one go, there are instances where you simply cant do it at all , even after zooming all the way in. Turning off JavaScript is not an option for me, there are simply too many sites using JavaScript for their manus n stuff. Now using dolphin browser, seemsmuch better, but still unreble.I am a huge android supporter, i have a galaxy s and i love it. But recently i compared this against an ipad 2, i hate to say this but with current firmware (3.1 stock, not rooted) this tablet is far inferior to the ipad when it comes to web browsing. I hate apple products, but at this point id rather have an ipad, over this

Browser Cache
I cleared my browser cache and this seemed to fix it. can someone test and post results?
personally, i happen to like the stock ui of this phone, so i didnt want to flash a custom rom or anything like that. i kept searching for different ways to improve performance and limit bugginess, and here is what i have come up with. first, root is a must for this phone. so is cwm recovery. the first thing i did was boot into cwm recovery and run fix permissions. this stopped the constant rebooting, but i was still experiencing the vibrating and force closing problem. i began deleting bloatware apps that i wasnt using. i installed an app called total commander for android, which has many different wonderful functions, one of which is mounting any partition as r/w. when you are done modifying a partition, you can also mount it back to r/o. so i removed most of tmobiles and samsungs bloatware apps, such as device carbon, zipwhip, telenav, group texting, qwik video chat, twitter, myspace, swype, and maybe a few i cant remember. each time i deleted system apps, i went back to cwm and fixed permissions again. now so there is no confusion, i didnt fix permissions after deleting every single app. say i would delete five or six apps, when i was done deleting them all, i would fix permissions. the reason for this is that i found that after deleting system apps, the system would still have permssions stored for those apps, and i believe this caused system errors similar to registry errors in windows. so, after deleting most unneccessary system apps, i saw more improvements, but there was still a bit of buginess. i was looking for something on google one day when i ran across a forum for the samsung vibrant where a member had issues with the same buzzing and force closing i had experienced. it was a buzz, a pause, then buzz-buzz-buzz. another member revealed that there were three main causes of this issue, which were androids native gmail client, wifi, and the stock android browser. i dont use wifi, but i got rid of the android browser and gmail client. i installed a third party email client from the market called maildroid, and use opera mobile as my default browser. i havent had any more problems except with two apps. one is slacker radio which is embedded in the media room app. it froze my phone every time i tried to load it. not a big loss, since i dont use it. just cant delete it without deleting media room and i use media room as my music player. but it still works fine as long as i dont open slacker. the other one is media hub. also froze my phone every time i opened it. not a big loss there either since i download most of my music from free sites. i deleted it. the only time i have force closes is when in settings i accidentally hit drivesmart, and thats because i deleted the drivesmart app. so im on stock ui and no crashes, freezes, lags or force closes. been about a week since my last unexplained crash. this might not work for everyone, but it might be a start.
If any of this does help anyone out there who wants to stay on the stock rom, feel free to reply or hit the thanks button
This does help me, but I think I'll wait for the back to basics rom, see how that goes.

oh yeah i gut all Samsung and t-mobile aps from my phone, but i use custom roms as well. I havn-t had a force-close in over a week and the last one i had was with the stock browser.
ive uninstalled
gallary
browser
tmobile carbon
and all unused aps drivesmart ect.
I havent had a problem with gallery. I use it to view my pictures. the gallery on this phone is quite nice compared to my last phone.
yeah mine kept freezing, not sure why so i said enough is enough and i dont really use it too much
Good info, but can I make a request?
It is harder than you know what to read!
PLEASE edit the OP to have paragraphs!
Android's gallery is a joke. Download Quickpic.
I suggest PowerAmp over the stock music player.
Another source of issues is the TouchWiz launcher. Nix it.
That just leaves Google Maps. Unfortunately, there are no good alternatives...
I personally havent had any problems with any other apps. i like the stock apps that i actually use, such as gallery, the stock music player, google maps, and TouchWiz. A lot of people bash the TW launcher, but i really dont think its the problem. i dont have any problems with it at all. i have tried other launchers, but i end up ditching them because they are larger than the stock launcher and use more RAM. i avoid using 3rd party apps over stock apps unless absolutely necessary, as in the case of gmail and android browser. getting rid of those apps stopped the buzzing and force closing for me. the reason i avoid using 3rd party apps over stock apps is because they take up space and sometimes use more ram. the TW launcher is actually quite small compared to other launchers, being only a few kb in size where other launchers are on average 2 to 5 mb. the most recent launcher i tried was WP7 launcher, which imitates the windows 7 ui. i liked it, but google navigation froze in that launcher. back to stock launcher, and navigation worked fine again. i know that i personally dont have any problems with TW launcher, gallery, or the stock music player, and i like all of them.
Meh.
The gallery takes forever and depends on the media scanner. Quickpic starts up faster shuts completely down when it's finished.
As for memory, 3rd party launchers play very nice with the system and let go of their resources when the OS asks them to. Can't say the same thing for TouchWiz.
You'll also want to run Voodoo sound and the PowerVR plug in from Chainfire.
Of course, you're free to do any slow thing you want with your device. It just won't perform as well as it could.
you are completely free to have your own opinions. but in my experience, im not having problems with the stock apps. in fact, i reinstalled the stock browser and gmail and still no problems. my phone works fine for the way i use it. you may use your phone in different ways or for different things than i do, so 3rd party solutions may be necessary for you. im not having any problems with my phone, so they arent necessary for me. you keep saying oh you'll want to do this or you'll want to do that. maybe you need all these 3rd party apps because you dont know how to manage your stock apps. almost every time i am finished doing anything with my phone, i go to task manager, exit all apps, and hit clear memory. every couple of days, i clear my app cache. i use optimize android toolbox for that. i dont even reboot my phone on a daily basis, and still, no problems. no lags, freezes, force closes, crashes, or random reboots. not a single one. i would say thats top performance in my book. now, enough said.
i feel like you two are going at it, you both have your own opinions, i side with the stock apps being poorly written and potentially causing issues. Im using gallary again because i like how it pulls pics from online, but for the browser i use opera mini just because i like the layout better (no hate towards the stock one)
I remove every apk that is not needed for what i do with my phone, including blutooth and some others that ive discovered do not inhibit the functioning of the device. This is all because im just a huge nerd with OCD and like to play around with things and have them running as clutter free as possible. Remember guys this is why we all use android, so we have the freedom to customize the device to our own needs.
i just want to say one more thing. when i started this thread, the information in my OP wasnt intended to be a guide for getting this phone to peak performance or to make it the fastest or best that it could be. it was intended as a starting place for those who simply want to get their phone running PROPERLY with the stock rom/ui. PROPERLY means without any glitches, force closes, freezes, lags, crashes or random reboots. there is a big difference between PROPERLY and BEST. for instance, take a car that comes out of the factory and has some problems. you can correct the problems and get it running PROPERLY, or you can supe it up and get it running the BEST/FASTEST. some people are happy with something just working properly, while others want the best/fastest. so for anyone who wants info on getting this phone running the best/fastest, feel free to start your own thread. this thread is for info on getting this phone WORKING PROPERLY. THANK YOU.

thats the only thing that irritated me. i repeatedly stated that certain stock apps were working fine for me. this guy repeatedly told me to replace the apps that i said were working fine for me. if you dont like those apps, fine. do whatever you want with your phone. dont keep insisting that i copy you. and the comment about doing any slow thing you want is what really irked me. i feel like that makes it sound like im an idiot for not doing what he tells me to do. i took it as disrespectful. i got no beef with anything or anyone else here.
if any of the apps that this guy insisted i replace were actually causing problems, i think i would still be having problems. especially touchwiz, which everyone thinks is so terrible, which isnt causing me any problems at all.
i think it only causes issues with memory, it doesnt manage it well. But i think you aid you close apps manually so it wouldnt be as bad.
Manually closing programs doesn't allow the garbage collector to do its job. Over time, small amounts of memory tied to hanging handles will add up and you will encounter issues.
Once again, it's your device. If you are happy, do what you like.

works just fine for me, offline maps and all
works fine on mine too (I'm on .26 WW, it also worked on .22)
on which version are you?
have you tried to delete the app cache?
have you installed the latest update for maps (01.08.2012)?
I also noticed that Gmaps always crashes when I hold the tablet in portrait mode. No problem in landscape.
Hi, I was having problems the last few times I used it, did the cache increase sizes and all, with no luck. What I tried right now, * appears * to be working and have fixed the problems. (Disclaimer, I haven't spent that much time with it, so not sure if it's fixed or what - but from my previous experience, it seems like it worked.)
I did a "cold boot" on the device that I read on other forums. TF 700 Forums
You will NOT lose any data! This is not a hard reset. It takes a few seconds longer to reboot (just this one time) with some diagnostics/debug tools on screen. But since then, it has soo far helped Google Earth. (I know your questions was related to maps specifically, but this could be the same thing.)
Hope this helps!
DTB
Interestingly it does the same on my TF300T too. Works like a charm on my Galaxy Note though.

I suspect that most of the google maps crashes are caused by the nvidia GL driver physical memory allocation bug. You can be pretty sure this is the cause if google maps crashes every time you start it but rebooting solves it for a while. Or you can check dmesg in a terminal for the kernel error message I talked about here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=30737043
Note you would need to run dmesg fairly quickly after maps crashes since the kernel logs are polluted with debugging messages which ASUS seems to have rather sloppily left in the kernel.

Me too....
I have had exactly the same problem, but also with GMail. Both Maps and Gmail both crash and stop working. No message or error message. Happens so frequently, it makes the apps unusable. I have found small relief if I try to purge the memory of the tablet prior to using the app, but that is a terrible state of affairs if this great tablet has so much trouble working the most fundamental of apps....
Very frustrating ... I came from having the Acer A500, and never had an ounce of trouble...

I cold boot quite a lot too but I'm seeing constant Gmail crashes. I've also cleared its cache and data and limited background processes to 4, all to no avail. I had seen map issues too but the cold boots seem to have cleared that up. But not so with Gmail.

I am hoping that I am not speaking too soon, but the problem of crashing apps on my Infinity seems to have stopped. This is a weirdsituation as the only apps that seemed to have problems are the ones from Google. Google Maps, GMail etc. What I did was cleared the cache in Google Maps and also downloaded an app FMR Memory Cleaner. Now I am not sure which item did the trick, but I haven't had a crash for about 3 days now and that is a big improvement. I hope others might find similar success.

This is the correct answer.
It is in fact the correct answer to a great many problems/questions on the ICS TFs. This is the problem with nearly every Google app. This is the reason games "designed for Tegra 3" crash consistently on the flagship Tegra 3 tablet. This has probably generated a significant number of RMAs. etc, etc. If this bug had never existed, probably a fourth to a third of the problem threads on the XDA TF Forums and other related boards would not exist.
Some people will claim they don't "have" it or that they have "fixed" it by some hokey method, but this is untrue because it's a driver and memory issue that exists at the kernel level and exists on every TF running the ASUS stock kernel.
The reason people think they can fix it (or think they may not have the problem) is because:
They can work around it
When and how it manifests is highly random and configuration dependent.
I.e. When and how often it manifests depends heavily on the memory state of the system at any given point in time, which in turn depends on a lot of stuff.
So, for example, if you have a bunch of apps/services installed (and virtually everyone's setup is different in this regard, even your own setup will vary over time) it makes a huge difference in how often and when you are going to see it. It's kind of like playing Russian Roulette except it is a giant revolver with 10000 chambers and there can be anywhere from 1 to 10000 bullets chambered every time you pull the trigger (run an app, install a new app, start a new service, etc).
So there are no fixes at the user level (aside from unlocking and installing a custom kernel): ASUS is the only one who can truly fix it for a stock TF.
So, for us, there are only workarounds. After owning five TF devices all of which have regularly been affected by this bug, here is how I deal with it:
On first crash: Run FMR Memory Cleaner, rerun crashed app, this will often "fix" it for a long period if I have not got a lot of stuff installed.
If app crashes after FMR, rerun FMR again. This sounds crazy but if you rerun FMR two times in succession it will usually allocate so much RAM it will force the launcher to reload. NOTE: IT WILL LOOK LIKE THE LAUNCHER HAS CRASHED, IT HASN'T. Wait like 30seconds to a minute for it to restart. Now rerun your app. This seems to give me a new lease on life for 90%+ of the crashes.
However, if your app crashes AGAIN. You guessed it: Cold Boot. Silently curse ASUS and NVIDIA as the machine reboots if it makes you feel better.
NVIDIA discovered acknowledged and FIXED the bug earlier this year. ASUS has either through ignorance, laziness, or malice not incorporated that fix into any of their code prior to the JB kernel for the Nexus 7 and the TF300 (which they probably picked up by osmosis for the 3.x kernel source). IMHO, given the prevalence and impact of this issue, this is evidence that whoever is directing/driving their FW development and/or applications engineering is criminally incompetent.
We will continue to have these issues until ASUS either: fix ICS (won't happen) or release JB. I consider my device usable because I am aware of the issue and can almost always get it to do what I want without a full reboot. However, I pity the poor confused folks whose config causes them to see this often but do not have any technical understanding of the issue or the workarounds.
Unfortunately, I'm getting Gmail crashes even shortly after doing a cold boot. I tried uninstalling updates this AM but that didn't help. I'll have to try your Step (2) as I got a crash after running FMR Memory Cleaner. I think I already tried that as I did see the Launcher issue you mentioned. Really frustrating as between Gmail and Email, I have different problems. I've been trying K-9 but I don't really care for the interface. Maybe I'll just have to continue using my Xoom for mail (Or my Galaxy S3, truly the most solid Android device I have owned).

Like zenaxe explained, the reason for a crash depends on a lot of stuff. This is why so many do not have the same symptoms you seem to be having. It might even be caused by some other app, rather than the Gmail app itself, but on it suffers from the side effects of that "rouge" app.
Step 1 is to eliminate all unnecessary apps from running in the background. You'd be amazed at what gets started when your reboot in completed. The easiest way is to list all tasks using System Tuner's task mananger (enable the System view aswell, no need to enable Kernel). From that list you can probably kill a bunch of apps, but usually the just restart so it's better to uninstall (so they won't start up again), or make sure you disable the Activities/Receivers that make the app (re) start on "its own". Disabling Activities/Receivers could render your app inoperable, so be careful what you disable.
Step 2, uninstalling updates is usually not the solution. Keep it up to date, as that one will have the most "knowledge" stored in it's code. Meaning, if Google found an issue with another app and the Gmail app, they might have worked around it in a newer version.
This is all from my own experience. When I first got the tablet, I went crazy in the play store and downloaded every single app I thought might be of use. After only just 1 week it had weird symptoms and apps would crash a lot. I decided to start over (factory date reset) and take a different approach. I still try out a lot of apps, but I started to use blue stacks to do all the "messy" install/tryout/uninstall, until I decide on the one or two apps to use.
Keep it clean and mean.
For some reason today Gmail is not working so well. I've been trying to access this email from Papa Johns and it won't execute 'Show picture' without doing a immediate force close.
I cleared cache and force stopped the app and no go. After trying after the force stopped app it's acting even worse.
Why Gmail be wilding out now.
Everything else is working rock solid post the .30 firmware update. Chrome is actually acting like x86/x64 Intel based Chrome app i.e. stable and working and no lag.
I was getting authentication errors earlier, seems like they are having issues today.

Mine has become so unstable that I quit using it and switched to the Email app. Crashes, lockups, etc. I tried restarts, cold boots, clearing cache and data, uninstalling/reinstalling updates, using a memory cleaner, limiting background apps, killing other tasks/apps - all to no avail. I saw it to some degree earlier but not much - it definitely got much worse with .30.

I Don't use Gmail on tab, just my phone. However I did/do have issues with Androsensor after .30 update http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1896892

I'm having issues with several of the Google Apps now. I have no idea what changed.
Oh my. I almost said no problems here and then decided to try....
Closes every time.. Maybe can just open mail and then just closes. No reports no nothing
.
Edit. Seems like it only crashes when launched from the widget. Couldn't get it close when opened from the icon.
I think this is a memory related issue again. Because when opened from the icon it loads a second or two. From widget opens instantly because it is there preloaded I guess. But from icon launched it loads the app to the memory. Just speculations..

the gmail app has never worked perfectly for me.
after reboot it does work for a while, but then suddenly it starts hanging and crashing.
And at the moment it starts doing that i just need to reboot, even really killing all the app/services related to that doesn't help
So i guess there is some leak somewhere. I never have any problems on my SGS2 with gmail. So it has to be something in this build.

For some reason today Gmail is not working so well. I've been trying to access this email from Papa Johns and it won't execute 'Show picture' without doing a immediate force close.

Might be related to the "show pic" and not Papa John nor gmail.
Actually so far since the update Everything on my TF700 is smooth as butter .
Sorry 2hear these few quirks, lol
Mainstream apps like Maps and Gmail getting broken to the point of unusable is more than a quirk. This is one of the things that I have found frustrating with Android across the six different devices in my household - figuring out what doesn't work after just minor updates like .30. I'm a professional s/w engineer/architect with 41 years experience so I have a pretty good feel for the difficulties of development for multiple platforms but that doesn't make me feel any better when I suddenly can't read my email or view maps and have to develop workarounds. Not a great selling point either when I show the TF700T to my coworkers - "Yeah, other than maps and email, it works great."

GMail and Maps have crashed once or twice for me since the update but all of those crashes have been due to the NVIDIA driver bug in the ASUS kernel according to the dmesg utility, so in my case, the crashes are ASUS kernel caused rather than anything Google has done. So, FWIW, they do not seem any more problematic than before for me. I still use my work arounds and still use the apps with only a small amount of hassle.
The Google apps have always used the driver (as well they should, if the driver is not garbage it'll increase performance, LOL). This is an ASUS problem it's been in their Tegra3 ICS kernel from day one and it looks like stability changes at updates because the updates affect the memory fragmentation on your device (this is why a bunch of people will say "looks like stability has improved" and then another group rushes in and says "the update really messed with apps/games/etc, nothing works anymore!". I wish there was some way the importance of this bug could be escalated with them. The good news is JB will fix it because it'll have a 3.x kernel.
Yeah, same here. GMAIL is dorked hard; maps too from time to time. I agree though, its not a Google problem, its a driver issue from ASUS.

Agree - I don't have these issues on any of my other Android devices.
