I just got a Samsung Captivate and it's the first smart phone I've ever had. It's really a neat little device.
I'm well familiar with jailbreaking, computing, following instructions to perform basic hacks, and yes, even reading, but what I haven't been able to find is an ORDER to do things in.
- Should I root/do things to my phone now, or wait until 2.2? Are there any benefits or drawbacks either way?
- In what ORDER do I have to do things? I'm looking to root, get rid of AT&T bloatware, and start side loading apps.
- What are the essential fixes for the Captivate? Lag fix? GPS fix? I don't know what else there is...
Anyway, I'm really excited to start digging in to this stuff, just looking for some basic advice for a first time smart phone/android owner. Thanks in advance!
Well, you can find a plethora of very useful ROM packages on the Developers forum that will root your device and enable sideloading and most are running 2.2 already. I abandonded stock after 2 weeks of owning the phone, it is my first smartphone as well and I will not touch any OTA's from AT&T because they bricked a lot of phones with their first OTA. The developers have the system dumps as soon as they start to push them and they clean up the bloatware. Before you flash anything get the unlock codes, use an app called SGS unlock from the market and Android ID changer to get your uniquie number and write it down and don't loose it. Once you flash 2.2 leak your ID will not be the correct one. Also once you root, get ROM Manager (donate version) and Titanium Backup (donate version) you will not be able to live without them. Also the 2.2 leak fixed my GPS, it really works now. Also, very important before you flash anything make sure you have a phone that enters download mode and recovery mode using the three button combo or you will brick your phone, there is a batch of phones that can not enter download mode no matter what you do. Take out your battery and look below your IMEI number for the batch hopefully it isn't 1008 these phones do not go into download mode. If you have one of these go to AT&T and exchange it for a phone that is from a different batch and make sure you have the button combos working before starting to mod your phone.
Lastly welcome aboard and enjoy your phone
Thanks for the reply.
Luckily, it appears my phone is from batch 1010 (you had me scared there for a second!)
What are the odds that the leaked 2.2 is any different from the actual one when it comes out?
Edit pretty much already said
Leaked froyo will be slightly different it will more of the stuff native to android and the att one will have more of there stuff. The developers seem to find and fix the bugs fast.
Is there any possibility to updated to 2.2 even if the phone was produced in 1008 batch? Unfortunately, mine says 1008. I have rooted my phone and am able to sideload apps.
Please help
Thanks
There is a jig somewhere in the forum that is how to make a jig that forces download mode. I would make it or if you are not comfortable with that someone is selling it. Try it to make it sure it works. It really is only needed if there is problem. Which happens to all of us sometime. It will get you out of pretty much any jam. That is why its recommend.
ill give you 2 rules of thumb
1 if its fun do it
2 if it aint broken dotn fix it
your choice , I only obey rule #1 , and I take risk because its fun , android is fun ...
if all you need are fixes , welll your the one who should say where to start .. is your phone sluggish ? do you feel lag ? does your gps lock in timely manner ? thats how it goes ... like I said me I mod just to mod ( many of us do ) ..
The main things I'm looking to do are:
- Remove AT&T bloatware
- Sideload custom apps
- Make it look awesome
- Install helpful stuff for battery life / gps / lag / etc.
That said...
I have successfully rooted my phone, and I'm now figuring out my next steps.
Hey all. I just bought a used (but in great condition) captivate off of ebay. Unfortunately it is of the #1008 batch.
I did test the 3 button and 2 button + usb modes and they both work.
Does this mean I will be fine putting a new rom on, or will this #1008 problem present itself somewhere down the road?
Last time I put an alternate ROM on a phone was way back on a Tmobile SDA, and hopefully it will be soon when I do my next one
Thanks

Why do you need ROM Manager AND Titanium Backup? Do they do the same thing? installed ROM Manager, created a backup, thought that's all I needed...

Rom Manager or a nandroid backup is a complete system image. It's useful to get back a full rom state if you have any troubles. Saves some time from having to rebuild from scratch.
Titanium Backup is used to save and easily restore third party apps. If you are flashing a new rom, you never want to restore system data as this has a tendency to cause fc's.
Hope that clears it up.
Thanks Cappy!

1. You can do that if you already rooted.
2. You can do that easy, even with out having to root. I use 'Android Central
Sideload Wonder Machine' (its a program you download and use on your pc)
3. Use Beautiful Widgets or Fancy Widget. Might need to be rooted to customize some UI.
4. For battery life I use Battery Indicator Pro. I like 'GPS Status' to test GPS.
I myself is not rooted or not running any custom roms. Not worth the risk to me and I can wait for the official update. My phone works and looks great. GPS is good enough when outdoors.

Bitter much?
FYI This will also help others who have the same questions. Be nice.
To answer your questions, the most popular rom currently in use would be cognition (located here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=786532). This handles all the needs you are looking for and more.
To make things pretty I would recommend using launcherpro and Beautiful Widgets. The best music player is poweramp.
good question

Hi guys,
I need the original WIND Froyo ROM for my G2X.
Need to return it to store and have Clockwork and Cyanogenmod on it.
Can someone please upload the original rom or Nandroid for WIND STOCK ROM?
Three exclamation points in the title for urgency.
try the lg mobile support tool might beable to reinstall the stock rom from there
Hmmm I didn't think of that.
However, I think it might be slim chance that it would work since I rooted it and installed custom recovery (clockwork) on it. I *could* recover the recovery to t-mobile's recovery referenced by TGA_Gunnman but I'm not sure that its equivalent to Wind's...
I'll definitely try LG's recovery tool when I get home, but meanwhile a more definite solution (e.g. Nandoid backup of Wind stock) would be welcome
even if you have a nandroid backup that will not put the stock recovery back on there but the lg update tool should
backup the ROM what you have, and then wipe the system by factory reset and formatting /system.
Connect it computer, and boot up recovery and see if it will let you mount USB.
If so, go the the LG updater site for Canada and if it recognizes your device, see if it will offer to upgrade you to v11H (since you have no ROM installed, it may do so.
If you are REAL lucky, that will load and unroot and possibly reinstall stock recovery.
Worse case if it does not.
R.restore your nandroid, try installing stock recovery with the oneclick tool, unroot with that onclick, and factory reset. Even is the recovery survives or is slightly different (doubt it - would think N. America would be the same) - they might not notice it.
Good luck - but why are you leaving us ...?
Thanks! I'll try that now.
My problem is the battery life : (
Wind in Vancouver have poor signal and that combined with 3G and Android's bad battery performance results in unreasonable battery life which I'm not too satisfied with : ( ...
I've tried *everything* to improve the battery life (cyanogenmod, cpu downclocking, ultimate juice booster, wcdma only, etc etc) but I can't get it over 8 hours even with moderate use...
might try a bigger battery i would say for moderate use thats good battery life got to remember that this is a dual core phone if you use it it will suck the juice.
Have you had any success with LGMobile Support Tool? Mine hangs at "Checking for whether the LG PC-Sync program is running..." and then "Checking the connection with the cell phone..." then stops at 30%, show "Problem with communication between cell phone and PC".
I have all the required USB drivers installed.
*Trying for the last time now... didnt work

No Wind G2X users out there? : /

You are my inspiration
Since no Vancouver Wind users seems to reside at XDA, I decided to take a darker route...
Wiped all drives (data, system, sdcard) and bricked the phone and restored Flash Stock Recovery (T-mobile's, which looks identical to Wind's). Now the phone hangs at LG logo and going into boot shows stock recovery. Since Wind's warranty policy is (from what I hear) over the counter exchange as long as the damage isn't caused by the user (physical, water damage), I can exchange for a new one and return it.
Better yet, I'll call Wind on Saturday (since tomorrow's a national holiday) and ask if they'll refund my "manufacturer error phone". Hopefully they'll be nice enough to refund it for me without the hassle of going all the way down to the warranty center.
....There's no Wind employee reading this?.... If so, shhhhh XD Cut me some slack please.

If you have tried plugging it in and opening the LG Tool, I would try again and see without any ROM on it, if it would try to download the ROM for it. First check to be sure your computer sees it - id not, probably WOT,
Really surprised that you could not straighten out your battery drain. Usually just setting some profiles in SETCPU and turning sync off (I only do it manually - not auto) clears up most of the problem. Also, freezing bloatware with Titanium helps also.
You may have had one of the rare bad ones - you might try exchanging it with the understanding that if it will not give decent battery life - it is also coming back.
PS - it would be bad enough that Vancouver blew the SC again - but to get caught trying to return messed with phone - real bummer!
LOL - sorry - had to do that. Feel/felt your pain - when SJ did the same thing - again.
Do you still need this? I just got an Optimus from Wind.
Haha, thanks but I already returned the phone. However, it would be nice to upload the stock rom for other people who might need it.
I can do that. Do you know how to make a backup that doesn't include user data? I did a test restore and it included things like my gmail account.
Probably not the best thing to upload online :V
Im not sure... only method I can think of is doing a factory reset and making an image Not too convinient
Alright I figured it out. I cleared all caches, reset factory default, then took a backup. It seems to be clean.
I'll upload it and post a new thead (so it is searchable) probably tomorrow.

Wow! Look at the thread title you just posted in, G2X HTC????? Please post a link to the HTC G2X, better yet post a link to a ROM.
LMAO
Alright xda, longtime lurker, crackflasher here.
Bought my G2x from WIND, gave the stock rom a tryout period which lasted a cool 2 days, and have been flashing since. Problem is my phone has been experiencing random shutdowns and reboots, screen bleeding and the standard nonsense, even before flashing; no matter what rom it is running even with my nandroid backup. It's kind of breaking my balls, and I've broken down and considered the possibility that my beloved phone is a lemon.
Now I'd like to see if I can get a replacement headset. Problem is that if I flash back to the stock bootloader it will look like a T-mobile phone and WIND will see that I've been buggering their TOS. Maybe I could send it straight to LG?
My main question is: is there anyway I can flash my nandroid backup along with the stock bootloader? Or am I just SOL?
Love this phone to death, and I accept the terms and responsibility of screwing with and trying new things. I should have returned the phone when I was having these issues on the stock rom... it was just so shiny and now I'm afraid I might pay a shiny replacement price as well.
Looking for a little empathy and answers if you can provide some.
Many thanks from maple syrup land,
- Zach
if you go to lg website and get thier mobile support tool. might have winds stock rom you can flash that should flash it all.
No linux support eh? Looks like I'm finding a buddy with windows...
Thanks for the advice!
Update:
Flashed new CWM via NVflash, phone only boots up into safe mode now, won't go to the CWM menu. I have a feeling I'm super boned, for one week, that was a fun 500 bucks, time to start saving Could LG's tool fix this?

It could possibly, it will do a factory flash, but only if the software recognizes the device.

Found out what the problem was, I was on an older clockworkmod without ext4 support flashing ext4 roms.... whooops...
Flashed CWM 4 and had no issues with nandroid backup for a full charge cycle, thankfully.
Flashed EB and Trinity Kernel, undervolting like a beast with setcpu; no issues and some badass battery life. Went all the way to 0 and im charging to 100 to to reset the battery stats.
Hopefully after that it will be as smooth sailing as flashing goes
Screen bleeding be damned.
Thank you for your help!!!
I returned mine on 4th day cause to many random shutdown . I work at mobilicity and a customer said he bought g2x from T-Mobile and put cm7 no random reboots for him.
Got a random shutdown today, seems to happen when the phone is not in use, if im on it constantly, no problems. In my locker at work it just shuts off? wtf? Could be UV, I'll take it off for now.... One day left on warranty... ****.
I almost did not notice it and was going to flash CMW, and restore a nandroid - lol.
I am going to mess with it a bit and then flash recovery.and do a nandroid of it.
As I understand it, I can then flash a rooted nandroid over it and I will have root, as one-click root would not work (yet).
UPDATE: Had a bad moment with it - could not get into nvflash mode by holding vol up/down. it took the 4th USB port on second computer to get it recognized. Flashed CMW, flashed the rooted 2.3.3 OTA - have got root.
Now only need morfic and/or faux to release a kernel for it. However, probably will be back on EB and CM7 soon in any case.

TMo of course.
LG had earlier only offered a refurb only if after an inspection from GOD, they decided to authorize it.
If you got a replacement phone without a battery and rear cover then its going to be a refurb like the one I got from Tmobile. When you hook up your phone to the LG Mobile Update program your phone will be a DWP not DW. Seems they are recycling phones sent back to them. I was offered a third phone, but I refused.

The model number in the battery case says DW, so other then going to the LG Update (which bricked my previous pone) how else can it be determined?
Mine also said DW on the phone until I connected it to the LG Mobile Update. That's where I found out it was actually refurbished DWP. I don't know any other way to verify it is a refurb other than that method. Also, when I called Tmobile yesterday regarding my current issues, they acknowledged to me that they send out refurbs replacements only. The tech support employee I spoke with said "most of them are found to have nothing wrong with them when we check the phones people send us". LOL! I told her you are just playing musical chairs with the phones sent to you.
keeping my current problems suddenly seems a whole lot better...

I hooked it up and it shows DW after I connect. Possibly they sent a new one with the update, as updating with LG tool had caused the replacement?
anyone counting on the lgupdate tool to give reliable information is misled. i got mine on day one. phone says dw. lgtool says dwp. i'm not sure who started all this dw/dwp stuff, but i really don't think it means a thing. dwp might just simply be second batch. who confirmed these to be refurbs,or newer/better units?
And for the record, connecting your phone to the LG tool just to have it read the model number will result in a 0% probability of bricking your phone. Unless you hit it with a brick while it's reading.
So there's nothing to be afraid of, and takes only like 15 seconds to find out, which is less than the time it takes to post here.
And furthermore...refurb or NOT, my replacement model (which LG tool reads as DWP, but has DW printed under batter cover and under battery) is MUCH better than my first G2x. It has almost no screenbleed, no screen separation, far less random reboots, better battery life, and gps lock is within 5 seconds now. So if it is, indeed, a refurbished model, they must have refurbed it pretty darn well. If this matters, my original phone SN started with 104, and this replacement starts with 106...seems most likely manufactured more recently than the earlier phone.

SuperOneClick Fail!
I just received mine a couple hours ago. I hopped on the free G2X offer of last week. SuperOneClick fails to root. I was mortified I'd bricked this new phone; but, after killing SuperOneClick (stuck on Step 6 as apparently happens to all), the device seems fine. Charging the battery overnight and then I may try your method of NVflash. Coming from OG Droid.
I received a replacement from T-Mobile last week, it came up as DW under LG Updater tool. T-Mobile doesn't always send out refurbs.

Which rooted ROM? xboarder's? I just read that entire 35 page thread and some seem to be getting reboots reintroduced. Since mine is currently having no problems whatsoever. I may try to NVflash and then try the brute force approach delineated here:

But, I need to read up on it more.
For now, I just want to Nandroid this installation so I can always go back to it. I think the NVflash will give me that option, right?

Call TMo and tell them others are getting them with 2.3.3 and July baseband. and you want the same. Especially if you bricked you last one with the LG Updater, you should not have to go down that path again if you can simply get a replacement with it on already.
In any case - insist on a replacement with the latest ROM and baseband on it. I have noted a very significant GPS connection time improvement even with CM7 ROM's (they had been like watching grass grow when waiting on the GPS).
I got my replacement yesterday after bricking it trying to update....its my third phone and it came with 2.3.3. This phone feels perfect and I have yet to have and reboots or freezes. I managed to update it, it almost bricked but after trying various methods people offered on here plus digging out an XP machine I haven't touched in two years, got it working again!
I just recently got this phone. I love the phone overall, however it seems to be lacking the very reason it was created.. Which is to be a phone. A friend of mine had this phone, and it worked wonderfully which was the reason I decided to go ahead and get it. He had signal at my house, he had signal most places that he went. With my personal experience, I have no signal at my house, I have no signal at my girlfriends(where on other phones I'm capable of having great signal point and case with my old HTC WildFire.(which I hated overall). It's very sporadic going from 2-3 bars to emergency calls only, and nothing at all. Could this be an issue of a virus or anything else that I might be able to do to get this resolved? Like I said on the same carrier a friend of mine had no problems at my house, or my girls house. Seems like I'm the only one out of the two of us with these issues. Same phone, same carrier. Only difference is that I have customized my phone a bit more with ADW Launcher, Beautiful Widgets, and rooting the phone so that I can use Light XT.
You do realize that you can install a widget that does the exact same thing as the light app, and it does NOT require rooting. It's also more accessible. Try and unroot to see if this has anything to do with it.
I searched and searched for an app or widget that would work with this phone. None of them seemed to work. Also, I think the problem was still there before the root. Also, just to confirm does rooting the phone generally cause an issue in that regard?

No rooting does not have anything to do with your signals. Are you using the stock 2.1 ROM? Or have you flashed any other ROM's. So a few solutions come to mind maybe you can try these out one by one.
1) First, your SIM card might be the problem. Take it out of your phone and clean it with microfiber cloth or tissue if you have any and replace it taking take you dont touch the contacts on the way in. See if your sim card fits snuggly or is it loose. You could also try your sim card on your friends phone or vice versa. Maybe even get a sim replacement from your carrier which they can do easily.
2) If that doesnt work, you could try doing a factory reset. That always seems to help most software issues. Backup your apps using titanium backup and you could try a factory reset.
3) Where did you buy your phone? I bought it in the middle east and it had the stock 2.1 ROM arabian build. The cincinnati bell 2.1 is the most upgraded version of the stock 2.1 ROM. I remember having similar problems when I was using the old one. After trying tonnes of ROM's im back on 2.1 but I flashed the cincinnati bell one and my phone works flawlessly. If you come from an old 2.1 maybe flashing the cincybell 2.1 will get everything reset, updated and working in order.
4) If you think everything else is alright with the phone, and your friends performs well there could always be some hardware issue. If its under warranty you can always get it checked. Did you drop it anywhere? Spill something on it?
Hope this helps.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I bought my phone in the US, at a Cellular One in Texas. My sim card fits loosely after checking that out. I put in my brothers from his phone, and it fit in tight and seems to work much much better at my home. I'm going to get a new sim card, see if that fixes the issue. If nothing else works I'll let you guys know, also.. I'm a little scared of putting a new rom onto the phone as I don't want to brick it and I'm low on funds to replace it.
just for reference, since you already found your root cause of the problem
the XT720 has better phone/data reception than my Nexus S
