Signal issues anyone? - Milestone XT720 General

I just recently got this phone. I love the phone overall, however it seems to be lacking the very reason it was created.. Which is to be a phone. A friend of mine had this phone, and it worked wonderfully which was the reason I decided to go ahead and get it. He had signal at my house, he had signal most places that he went. With my personal experience, I have no signal at my house, I have no signal at my girlfriends(where on other phones I'm capable of having great signal point and case with my old HTC WildFire.(which I hated overall). It's very sporadic going from 2-3 bars to emergency calls only, and nothing at all. Could this be an issue of a virus or anything else that I might be able to do to get this resolved? Like I said on the same carrier a friend of mine had no problems at my house, or my girls house. Seems like I'm the only one out of the two of us with these issues. Same phone, same carrier. Only difference is that I have customized my phone a bit more with ADW Launcher, Beautiful Widgets, and rooting the phone so that I can use Light XT.

You do realize that you can install a widget that does the exact same thing as the light app, and it does NOT require rooting. It's also more accessible. Try and unroot to see if this has anything to do with it.

I searched and searched for an app or widget that would work with this phone. None of them seemed to work. Also, I think the problem was still there before the root. Also, just to confirm does rooting the phone generally cause an issue in that regard?

No rooting does not have anything to do with your signals. Are you using the stock 2.1 ROM? Or have you flashed any other ROM's. So a few solutions come to mind maybe you can try these out one by one.
1) First, your SIM card might be the problem. Take it out of your phone and clean it with microfiber cloth or tissue if you have any and replace it taking take you dont touch the contacts on the way in. See if your sim card fits snuggly or is it loose. You could also try your sim card on your friends phone or vice versa. Maybe even get a sim replacement from your carrier which they can do easily.
2) If that doesnt work, you could try doing a factory reset. That always seems to help most software issues. Backup your apps using titanium backup and you could try a factory reset.
3) Where did you buy your phone? I bought it in the middle east and it had the stock 2.1 ROM arabian build. The cincinnati bell 2.1 is the most upgraded version of the stock 2.1 ROM. I remember having similar problems when I was using the old one. After trying tonnes of ROM's im back on 2.1 but I flashed the cincinnati bell one and my phone works flawlessly. If you come from an old 2.1 maybe flashing the cincybell 2.1 will get everything reset, updated and working in order.
4) If you think everything else is alright with the phone, and your friends performs well there could always be some hardware issue. If its under warranty you can always get it checked. Did you drop it anywhere? Spill something on it?
Hope this helps.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I bought my phone in the US, at a Cellular One in Texas. My sim card fits loosely after checking that out. I put in my brothers from his phone, and it fit in tight and seems to work much much better at my home. I'm going to get a new sim card, see if that fixes the issue. If nothing else works I'll let you guys know, also.. I'm a little scared of putting a new rom onto the phone as I don't want to brick it and I'm low on funds to replace it.

just for reference, since you already found your root cause of the problem
the XT720 has better phone/data reception than my Nexus S

Inspire 4G screen/display resolution problem

Hi there, today I received my HTC Inspire 4G, so I start to play with it and I notice that the screen or the resolution is very poor, I compare with my friend Inspire 4G, and his HTC the screen resolution is awesome, the colors are so nice... while mine the resolution is awful like low pixels..
Is this is a bug or something or it is a factory problem with the video card driver or something???
anyone with this screen resolution issue and can this be fixed or maybe return it to the store?
hmmm curious to see what this looks like you got any pictures by chance?
how can i take a screen shot without rooting it...
with a camera...
this is what I'm taking about
Yea it shouldn't look like that. For simplicities sake, I'd take it back and just have them replace it.

thanks a lot for your help
I mean you could go through rooting it s-off and flash the stock ruu. To see if it was just a bad flash from the factory, but honestly it would just be easier to take it back get a new one and make sure it is fully operational.

yeah, I could try it, I bought it from amazon wireless, and I'm from another country, so returning it it's gonna take long..
should I root it and try re-flashing the RUU?
Well if you root and s-off might as well flash a stock/custom rom. It might solve your problem it might not. If it doesn't you can always revert back to stock and ship it back. I recommend the Ace Hack kit. It takes a little longer then the one click, but you won't run into any trouble after doing it. Least you will know if its a a software or hard ware issue.

I already downloaded the ACe Hack kit, but dont know how where to begin...
I already make the Gold Card
Once you have the gold card made the rest is simply typing scripts in command prompt, plus a bit on the phone, provided you have adb working and your device is recognized.
Extract the contents of the hack kit and open the readme html file for the instructions.

I'm from Panama, but the phone was shipped to NY to a friend, so I can return it without problem..
Well last night I rooted it, downgrade it, flashed with the original rom, flashed to Coredroid rom, flashed to Android Revolution rom, in every rom it has the pixalation and the screen resolution problem, and unrooted it, flashed with the original rom again, and all is like new..
so it is a hardware issue.. today I'll call to amazon custom service to make the replacement..
I'll post when they replaced the phone and have it again..
thx for your help mudknot2005
ok, i called and talked to them, it's a hardware issue , so I will send it back on Monday, wait about a week and got a new phone...
I'm glad they gonna replace it..
Anytime that is what we are here for. I am guessing you turned s-off back on? If not I would do that before you ship it. To make sure all you need to do is boot into hboot, holding down volume down and power while it is restarting.
Glad to hear amazon is going to handle the issue .
I got 3 in a row with bad screens. Made me wonder if there was a bad shipment here in Pittsburgh. I wound up getting an atrix but am taking it back also. It's very buggy, I've had to do battery pulls almost daily due to the phone freezing up.
I hope your able to solve your problem. I live close to an att store so I didn't try any of the mentioned methods.
Best of luck with it.

Entire screen resolution issue
Sorry to hear everyone else is having problems, too. What led up to my issue is I tried RC Kingdom's newest ROM, and then all hell broke loose on my poor screen. And yes, I followed the youtube video on his page to make sure I installed it properly. It was sharp and crisp before I installed that ROM. I have tried everything in this thread to resolve my resolution issue, but to no avail. Tried using the stock RUU to reset back to factory. No cigar. Then I re-rooted and put my backup from nandroid on. No bueno. After that I installed CoreDroid's newest rom, RCKingdom's newest rom, and Virtuous's newest rom. Again, no luck. And I did this all from both 4ext recovery, and CWM. Attached I have provided 4 screenshots from various areas to show it's a ROM-wide issue. If anyone could help, I would <3 you forever!
If there is anything I am lacking to provide assistance, please don't hesitate to ask. I may be a noob, but I used the forum search tool, google, didn't make a new thread, and tried resetting back to stock, so please be gentle.
EDIT: I'm looking more closely at the screen, and it looks like the picture on the screen isn't filled up to the edges. Can anyone else either confirm of deny this? Thanks!
EDIT2: The edge of the picture on the screen definitely doesn't match up to the phone screen. From what I've researched on google, it could mean bad flash memory, either from time, or a bad flash. Does anyone else have ideas?

Your first sentence caught my eye. Just wanted to say this issue is very rare. Not sure if you realize this, but you responded to a 5 month old thread, where only 2 people had this problem. Haven't seen anyone mention this issue happening since then. Back in March, the Inspire was brand spanking new, so that might explain why a couple of people had the problem back then, maybe due to a few manufacturing process glitches that happens with some brand new products.
Now on to your problem. I took a look at your screen shots, and I honestly don't see any issues with your resolution. The 1st screen shot looks like you were in mid-swipe when you took it - the icon tilting effect is a normal thing when swiping between screens on a Sense 3.0 ROM using the 3D effect. The other 3 screenshots look fine. I do see a little jagginess in the scroll page indicator in your Sense dock, but I'm viewing your images on a 24" monitor and I'm willing to bet that jagginess isn't noticeable on a 4.3" screen.
One thing to keep in mind about Sense 3.0 ROMs is that a lot of stuff has been manually resized and doesn't always look its clearest. For example, I've noticed that on a lot of Sense 3.0 lockscreens the icon font looks a tad blurry. But I did notice that you said the problem happens on the stock RUU, which might indicate you've got a hardware problem that cropped up coincidentally while you were flashing ROMs.
Do your screen shots represent what you're actually seeing? Be sure to look at them on a computer monitor before answering. Regarding the issue you mentioned where your image doesn't go all the way to the edge of the screen, can you post of a picture of your phone taken with a camera? I can compare your phone's screen to mine.

Q: return to stock tmo branded for waranty repair?

I want to return to stock on my tmobile branded HTC sensation 4G. I have flashed the radio, eng s off, and CSL recovery.
I am going to give them a shot at fixing my reception issues before I destroy the phone and buy something else.
Did you have reception problems before flashing your radio or after? I think you should be fine with having a rom since HTC released their bootloader if its a big deal and your really worried just flash a stock rom on that bad boy and call it a day. Just my 2 cents new to the site so hopefully a vet will chime in here for help
Though I've never returned to stock on my phone, you just need to download one of the TMOUS RUUs in this thread:
[ROM][11 May] Shipped Pyramid ROM Collection
There are two listed for TMOUS (there was only one when last I checked the thread), but it supposedly doesn't matter which one you pick according to one of the posts later on in the thread.
They're big old files, but just run the .EXE and it ought to walk you through every necessary step to proceed properly.
Good luck, and let us know how it goes!
Thank you very much for the great responses.
Yes I had reception problems on all 3 sensation 4g's I've had my hands on. It's terrible. Side by side, on the same tower, it gets far lower reception than my old Motorola Cliq (piece of slow crap.)
It's ridiculously low and drops calls. It's so unreliable at my house that I have to use WiFi calling and take a drop if I get more than 30' from my extremely good wireless router. meh. crap.
To the other gentleman, than you very much. I figured it included the radio, but I was unsure about the bootloader/recovery. I will start there and then figure out if there is anything else I need to fix before I send it in. I don't want any more BS from them. I'm sure they are just going to send it back and say "nothing is wrong".
They have said that it is comparable to reception on their other models. If this is the case, this will be the VERY last HTC phone I ever own, and our company has just gotten to the point that I can invest in things such as this for business. If we only get 2 at a time, every 6 months or so, That is $10,000 in lost business in the next ten years, provided they are only $500 phones.

If I may be so bold as to make a suggestion and ask a few questions....
1. Have you tried reverting to stock and see if you still have the same problems with reception?
2. Are you aware that the Sensation suffers from the grip of death?
3. Have you noticed performance with reception after flashing a new ROM in comparison to stock?
I think I may have some insight to the real problem but need this info first.

Yes, They (3 different phones) had this problem from day 1. Purchased from different places, at different times.

Yes, but this isn't to what I refer. Holding the phone in a weird way to make the radios D/C isn't my problem so much as the design that allows this to happen in the first place is my problem. If I set the phone down, I get more bars than if I hold it normally. If this is the difference between 2-3 and 1-2, I can get dropped calls. My wifi range (max performance on) is 1/10th of my tablet and 1/20th of my laptop.
Even without touching the phone, just setting it on a wood counter top, it has less reception than my Motorola Cliq or Mytouch 4g, even when on the same tower. The cliq's reception does not change if I pick it up.
It's a bad design. If it is what HTC considers acceptable, then their phones aren't acceptable to me. It's cool. I'm not really that pissed about it. I just won't buy another. There are options.

No, I've found no increase in reception with any change I've made. I've flashed 5 different radios other than stock with no changes in this department.
I have heard people have speed changes, but I was not tracking that so I can't really respond to that.

Hope you have some help.
I've already tried a new back. It did nothing. There simply aren't enough towers in my area (all edge towers anyway) to support a phone with such poor reception. My Cliq had no issues with dropped calls in many of the areas I drive through, but this sensation just can't make it down my parents road without dropping.
The reason I ask is that I think that the Radio-Interface-Layer (RIL) files must be screwing with your radio. The RILs are like drivers for your radio. Different radios work with different RILs depending on your location. Long-in-short-version, Since the Sensation is fairly new, we are still exploring what works best and therefore your mileage may vary.
You may want to check this thread
And check out your RIL version. To check to see what RIL you have run getprop "gsm.version.ril-impl" in Terminal Emulator or adb shell and it will print out the RIL version.
T-Mo users should utilize HTC-RIL 2.2.0159HMQ if not running 2.3.4 ROMS
2.3.4 ROMS require HTC-RIL 2.2.0169HMQ. The matching radio versions are included in the thread posted above.
Hope this helps.
If that fails, tonight, TMOUS released an OTA update. See if you can get it through Settings-> About Phone -> HTC Software updates.
The changes for the T-Mo update can be found here
Hope this helps!
EDIT : I am assuming that you have a T-Mobile Sensation 4G and not an unbranded HTC Sensation and that you current location is in fact Myrtle Beach, SC. But then again, I hate assumptions and I really should have asked >.< **having a simpson 'doh' moment here**

I'm sending it to HTC, not tmobile.
I will play with the MILs right now (installing the tmo one)
I'm on stock RUU now, but it did not replace the PVT S-OFF and recovery crashes and requires a battery pull to reboot. It goes to a icon of a phone with a red triangle thingie on it.
EDIT: MIL's match.
EDIT: Texts from 10076200000 is tmobile related. WTF it does is WTF.

Could be trying to push the OTA update. Have you tried applying the OTA update?
iNFORMATION
I have personally reset my phone a couple of times using the tmo ruu and know that it sets your phone back to absolute stock, with no root and only being s-off. What this means is, if you wish to reroot then you are going to have to go back through the rooting process.
As far as the symbol that you are seeing when you try to do an ota update? The reason that you are seeing the phone with a red triangle is because your phone is being recognized as being rooted and once rooted htc will not allow an ota to your phone. You have to trick HTC into thinking that the phone is not rooted in order to get the ota, there is a thread in the forums for this. I do not remember which thread it is, however, I know that it works as I did it for all four of the HTC sensations that I own.

[Q] Please help a newb understand and possible fix my 4g.. long journey

Okay lets start from the beginning.... about a year ago I switched to Verizon ONLY so that I can get 4g as they have the best 4g in my area. (Detroit). I loved it at first...smoking hot 4g almost everywhere I went. When my home internet went out I could tether to my phone... life was good. Sometimes when entering a building I would drop to 3g but my desk and PC are by a picture window so I always had 4g to tether with.
Then came that update a couple months ago.. don't remember the update number but it was the one that was pulled. Every since then I can only get 4g when I am in a prime area outdoors near a tower. This makes the phone almost worthless to me because I use it to play an online game and surf the internet at work, not to mention I no longer have a backup connection for my PC... without 4G I might as well be using a cheap flip phone. I have 3 S3's on my account and they all show this same behavior change.
I have tried changing the sim card.. flashing many different radios and am currently running Jelly Beans build 15 ROM to see if a different ROM might help. (I am rooted and unlocked) So far nothing has helped.. I have also tried having my SIM reprovisioned.
I ran across this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1530203 in the HTC forums discussing hardware antenna mods and even some success claimed and was wondering if anybody has experimented with this with the S3??? I have already had the phone apart looking for ideas but I am afraid this is out of my league without some assistance.
Also while sitting in the house I still get good reception based on DBM, currently at 82 as I type this with only a 3G signal and even drops to 1x on occasion, So what is the deal with being able to get 4g outdoors with a lesser signal while only 3G while indoors?? Toggling airplane mode and other tricks I have tried will not get me 4g indoors.
Now... if it came down to it can I give my current phones a try on AT&T to see if that helps anything? Also does anybody remember what radio firmware we where on before the OTA of death?? I may have missed a radio or two in my testing,
Any advice, opinions, suggestions... any input is appreciated. I am somewhat OCD so I will not rest until I resolve this issue or switch carriers.
Thanks in advance.
OK I don't know if I missed it but do you have a custom recovery ? If so flash a different radio and see which does your phone like . invisiblek has all in one packages that are easily flashable . charge your phone and don't interrupt the process . try md3 radio .

Been down the list and installed them all last night... took me hours because I wanted to test each radio for a few min before trying the next. Just got off the phone with verizon and samsung 3 way call, samsung will repair the phones if I send them in, but I would be without phones for about 2 weeks,,, damn.
Update.. don't know if it will help but I filed an FCC complaint. Don't know how well it will work but Sprint bent over backwards over FCC complaints.
Which firmware package are you using. Mf1 was the one sent out to fix md3 or whatever that botched one was. Mb1 was the one before that I think. Just flash the mb1 firmware. You can also flash the mf1 firmware. Filing a FCC complaint is a bit extreme for something you can fix by flashing a new firmware package.

I am currently using MB1 along with the associated rpms on the jelly beans rom. MF1 never solved anything for me, except reduce the overheating and battery life a little. All 3 of my phones are pretty much garbage now. From what I am hearing the bad update put some phones in a non repairable status.
A possibly unrelated issue is that my phones seem to be a different version than most.... I have watched many S3 teardown videos... and in every one a small screw was used to hold the sim card/sd card slot into place. My phone has no such screw nor a place to put one... the assembly just snaps into place and is held in by the surrounding hardware. I think I may have a very early release of the phones.. all 3 are 32 gig models and from what I understand they didn't sell very well on verizon, last time I checked they had quit even listing the 32 gig option.
I have tried to exhaust all options before complaining to the FCC. One thing I would like to play with some more is APN values but have had very little luck because it always reverts back to the same APN and if I try to force anything I get no data at all.
I am also willing to void the warranty one one phone by trying internal antenna mods but I cant do this alone and there seems to be nobody here that has tried it . At the very least the wifi antenna looks easy to mod... just spiral some copper wire around it and spay it with some kind of non conductive coating should help a little. and that ridiculous thermal pad to keep the cpu cool should be trashed and replaced with copper shims and quality thermal paste.
While there is not a lot of room inside for modding I think we could make some small changes that will help.
With the lack of phone hardware modding support on cell phones in general I will probably jump ship to a S4 since it comes in a 32 gig flavor..and I intend on trying an AT&T sim in the phone to see how it performs there.
My wifes phone that has never been modded/rooted/unlock and is on the latest update is much worse than mine... she is stuck in 1x mode most of the time and cant even download her voicemail without a long struggle.
We are in a prime LTE area so there is no excuse for this.
My Mf1 firmware actually gave me more bars and a faster connection. That is to bad it messed up your lte.

[Q] Back to Stock

Please forgive me, as I have not searched the forum extensively for an answer, but I'm in a bit of a time crunch as I am leaving on a trip tonight and need to get back to some semblance of a working phone.
Some time ago I flashed some rom (I think Paranoid Android; I don't remember. I liked it enough to keep it, then I didn't worry about it again after that.) Little by little it started getting slower and buggier, but for the most part it worked fine, so I ignored it. For the last couple of weeks it started losing signal and data constantly, with no change to the phone. I kind of just lived with it because I could usually restart my phone and I would regain signal, but as of a couple of days ago, it would just drop off and not come back until it wants to.
I had the day off to prepare for my trip, so I decided I would try to go back to stock; there's almost nothing that I do that requires a custom ROM and I had no data issues on stock, nor does my wife on her Note. I looked around for a bit for instructions to restore my phone, and found some, but out of the handful of pages I went to, each one had at least one link that was dead, rendering the method useless, to me, a layman, at least.
I then decided I would just find a Stock Rom, thinking that might be the next best thing. I found Clean Rom on here and decided to try to flash that. I made a backup of my system, wiped everything, and then flashed it. Except something is wrong with the zip and keeps giving me an error message. I then tried to restore my back up that I had just made to try something else, but something happened to that, and it also wouldn't open. I tried the backup before then (quite old, as I haven't done any tinkering with my phone for quite some time) and it worked, but it tells me that my sim card is disconnected, so I have no data or signal. As it is an old restore, I'm not sure what the name of the ROM is, but I can provide all of the information needed, if someone needs that to figure it out.
Anyway, long story slightly shorter: I need to fix this today, and like as soon as possible. I will give ten dollars, count them TEN DOLLARS, to the first person who can provide a set of working links and very straightforward instructions as to how to get back to stock (or if there is a good working ROM that will give me FULL functionality with no flares that would be easier to do. Easy and fast are the key components to this request). I'm not dumb, but I am no longer immersed in the lingo of this community, as it has been a few phones back that I really cared about actually experimenting much with my phone, so non-technical language would be nice. I know what flashing and wiping means. Most of the rest, probably assume I don't.
Thanks.
Your best (easiest) option is probably to flash another stock ROM, or stock-ish ROM. There are quite a few options in the Android Development section. There are a couple of stock rooted at&t ROMs in the first couple pages, also a stock rooted Telstra ROM.
You didn't mention which carrier you're with, whether your phone is branded, or any of your important details, like your firmware/hboot details and whether you're s-on or not. If you wanted to go back to completely stock, I'd need to know those details. Going completely stock can/will be a longer process though.

Okay, I'll try another one. I'm not sure why Clean Rom didn't work, but if another one or two don't work I'll come back here and I'll have you talk me through getting back to stock and I'll throw you a digital Hamilton.
Thanks.
Well, I tried another couple of ROMs. They installed correctly, but it says that I have no sim card, so I still have no signal. Maybe I some how deleted my radio when I did a system wipe while trying to install one of the ROMs? I'm not sure.
Anyway, for "more details" I'm on AT&T, I'm not sure what you mean by branded, but it's the HTC One X, the current ROM is 4.1.1. I haven't done S-On/S-Off, or anything like that other than unlocking the bootloader a long time ago. The kernel version says 304010-g240d4d5, the baseban version is 0.17.32.09.12_10.86.32.08L The Build number is 3.17.707.1 CL134054 release-keys.
I'm not sure which of that information is relevant or not, but that's everything I can tell you.
Never mind that last post. When I said in the first post that I'm not dumb, apparently I lied. My phone fell off a table this morning, and I guess it knocked the sim card loose, but it coincided with doing the factory reset stuff, so I thought they were connected. I pushed it back in, restarted, and now the stock ROM I'm using works great.
Thanks/Sorry!
Well, it turned out to be an easy solution (Occam's Razor FTW yet again).
But this thread made me think . . . why the heck does it seem so many people lately flash ROMs without doing a nandroid first? Its a no brainer to me. If you are trying new ROMs, and not sure how they will perform, why would you not give yourself an easy way to simply revert to your last known good config?
I couldn't agree more, but there's plenty of not-so-smart practices on here, so I'm not at all surprised.

P9000 sound and internet issue on 7.0 ... Try another ROM?

So I had a P9000 that got the screen smashed.
I liked the phone, it was stuck on the 6.0 with the OTA issue, but everything worked fine for me... so I went ahead and bought a new P9000 (which should be faster than getting the part and repair the older one... which I planned to do anyway and keep it as a spare in case of another accident).
It arrived with a 6.0 installed as well, and everything seemed to work fine.
While setting up the phone, installing stuff etc... it got automatically updated to 7.0
THE ISSUES:
I can barely hear anything when people call me. I've read is a pretty common issue.
I've tried every possible solution I could find online... nothing works.
The only option is to put the call on speaker... which is not so handy for EVERY call EVERYWHERE.

I just went on a trip and realized data roaming is not working either.
I get phone signal, data and roaming options are both active (I tried both cards), checked the APN with the providers... all options again. No way to get it to work.
As soon as I landed back it worked without issues.
With the other phone/ROM I never had issues.
SOLUTION?
I've read some time ago that rooting 7.0 on P9000 is kind of risky or doesn't work altogether.
Is this still true?
Do you recommend any specific instructions to do it? (I've rooted and installed ROM's in other phones, so not newbie but no expert either).
Which ROM would you recommend as of today?
I keep the phone pretty app-light, I use for work only... so these issues are really bad for me. And the Elephone customer care has been a total deal breaker.
I won't be buying from them anymore that's for sure, but I'd like to don't burn cash either and get some use out of the phone.
Thanks in advance
