yep, thats right!!
free only for an unspecified amount of time.
Splashtop 2 HD
Just tried it. Works pretty good. Thanks
Read some of the reviews, I'll stick with the version built into My Cloud.
Its only free if your on the same network. If you are on different networks, it makes you pay.

Yep - better off staying with the version built-in to the Transformer - it's completely free, even for "over-the-internet" connections (there is a monthly fee for that part in V2)...

or you can get it free, pay 10 bucks a year and play skyrim and diablo 3 anywhere on your tablet.... that alone is worth 10 bucks.
Does anyone know if there are differences in this over the THD optimized version? I bought it back when it was on sale, and curious as to if the "optimizations" were rolled into the v2 release. At the time of the THD release, there was only splashtop, and splashtop hd.

You can play games using any version of Splashtop, including the version that is included with the Transformers... It has no idea what you are actually doing - it just replicates the screen output...
My recommendation to folks looking to use Splashtop is to try the free version that comes with your device (under MyCloud) first - it will most likely do what you need and allow-over-internet access without a monthly fee...
I just really dislike how the developer decided to start charging a monthly fee for something that was completely free in the previous version. Especially since some folks paid for V1, which is now basically a dead product (sure, you can still use it, but I wouldn't expect any updates) - the developer would rather you "upgrade" to V2 and charge a monthly fee... That and the fact that iPad users get the same V2 without the monthly free just annoys me...

It's nice of you to inform folks what asus mycloud can do in case they don't know, but getting this while it's free doesn't obligate anyone to get a subscription. Nor does it prevent them from using asus mycloud whenever they're on an outside network and using this over the same network. Anyone who doesn't grab this while it's free is nuts.
Further, they are NOT charging a monthly fee for something that was free in the previous version because what's available in ST2 was not available in ST1. ST1 used google chat's api to help you phone home with limited security. ST2 uses splashtop's own servers to do so and uses a great deal more security. They're charging (a modest sum) for something different. The fact that you don't value what has changed does not mean that nothing has changed.
The developer is fantastic and has done nothing wrong. They don't deserve to be trashed, especially every other freaking post across two different threads. They are in fact doing a pretty generous giveaway here. Every single Infinity user will retain free external access through mycloud even if they grab this newest version and secure for themselves all the features that will come to it.
I'm not "Trashing" anyone - just stating facts. While the means may be different, the end result is that you can do the same thing in V1 for free, for which there is a monthly fee in V2. Wouldn't you be upset if you paid for V1, only to find that the dev has moved on to V2 (with a subscription model for some features), especially when every other Android product includes free upgrades?
Typically, with any other Android product, users get all future product upgrades for free, without losing functionality - that's the way Play store upgrades work. All that they had to do is leave the option to continue to use Google servers for over-the-internet access in V2 - in other words, give the use the choice on how they should connect over the internet (and at what price). Instead, they chose to make V2 a "separate" product (while still trying to capitalize on the SplashTop name). They way they handled this is very shady - just take a look at their reviews for V2 - I'm not alone here!
Everyone is free to do what they want - I'm just letting everyone know that there is now a monthly fee for over-the-internet access. That's not so obvious at first. I just urge folks to try V1 before paying a monthly fee for V2 - that's it. Also, I will not support a developer does does these types of things in order to get around the "free upgrade" policy of the play store...
But, as always people are free to do as they wish, just like I am free to state my opinions in as many threads as I like, thank you very much!
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T using Tapatalk 2
Not every other Android product includes unlimited eternal free major upgrades. And no, I'm clearly not upset, as they aren't taking what I paid for away from me. Everyone is still perfectly free to continue to use ST1, even alongside ST2. And here, the upgrade IS FREE. A particular service is being charged for (and said charge is even waived for a year for past buyers). The fact that others are whining about it too doesn't make it shady. I don't know if you noticed, but you can't throw a rock on the internet without hitting someone whining about something.

Such as? I've never had to pay for an app upgrade in Android - I'm curious as to what app(s) you are referring to...
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T using Tapatalk 2
For starters, how about the thousands of HD/Tablet versions of apps that mostly contain only a slight interface tweak -- fewer changes than splashtop 2 has compared to 1. Care to name some apps who promise eternal major upgrades for free? At the end of the day, anyone who continues to invest and add features to premium software is going to draw a line and spin off a new version. That the android platform is young and its devs haven't done this as often as those on older platforms doesn't change this longstanding truth of software.
Splashtop's biggest mistake here might have been in naming. If they'd called it Splashtop Secure, there would probably be less of a fuss.
When i said you can play games, i do not mean freecell, spider solitaire and your regular games. ive been playing skyrim, diablo 3 and portal 2 on this. The first version would also NOT let me play skyrim or any other game for that matter.
i tried the first version and i can DEFINITELY see the upgrades, i dont see how they could be missed.

I've been as specific as you have. But okay, buying Quickoffice Pro doesn't keep you from paying for Quickoffice Pro HD. Buying mobilenoter se doesn't get you mobilenoter se HD, and on and on and on and on and on. Same programs, slightly different UI. Was that level of specificity really required? Have you really never seen HD versions of apps that I referenced above? Versions that are increasingly unnecessary since ICS and up support multiple UIs per apk.
As to the major upgrades, my point on software economics above stands. No one is going to keep endlessly supporting a piece of software once it has saturated its intended market and there are few if any new sales to made. At that point, they'll spin it off with new features and a new price tag, go in app payment on new features, or abandon the project altogether. Android is a young platform, so that hasn't happened as often as it has on older platforms. That doesn't warrant any extra whining when it finally does happen. It's not unprecedented, it's just life.

One of the last items that I missed from the conversion from WM was a slingmedia player.
It was released today (tonight actually).
Of course, I have the older slingplayer (AV model) which is not 100% supported, but it is good enough until my new Solo arrives.
Even using an older not quite supported slingbox, the player is much much easier to use than the WM ever was.
SlingPlayer For Android
Awesome
I have used Slingplayer mobile on WM and iPhone and the Android flavor is by far the best. The integration that they have built in to allow easy use of all of the functionality you would have right in your own living room. Good Work Sling!
The site says sling classic not officially supported but may work. Is this app still have the 24hr return policy as the rest of the app store. I don't want to waste $30.
Sent from Droid Incredible using TapaTalk
I downloaded it last night to test it with my Slingbox AV (older "unsupported" model) on my rooted Incredible. It works, for anyone who was wondering. Over EvDO rA, the picture was good, but the audio was kind of choppy. Some people have guessed that the buffering is handled differently in the new version, which might explain the audio issue. One thing that's completely different in the Android version (I came from WM too) is that there is no way to adjust the streaming settings (or even view the statistics for that matter). I'm going to dig into the config files a little and see if anything can be manually tweaked.
So, for anyone who's wondering... the Android version of SlingPlayer WILL work with a Slingbox AV, but it's not necessarily great.
I am using the slingbox AV myself until the Solo shows up. I got pretty good results last night on EVDO rev/A. After changing channels it would settle down pretty quickly.
On WiFi it work much better of course...
The method of changing and selecting channels is much easier than the WM verison. Even accessing some of the more obscure buttons is easy with this interface.
some of the features don't work with the older slingbox, but I didn't find anything that I had to have that I could not do with it.
I bought it. It is ok but not worth the $30 so I uninstalled. I better get my refund.
Man, figures is would be now that I'm w/o cable. I'm moving in a week.

Which is the same a stealing since they are not legal copies of the apps and the original authors are not paid for their work, time and expense of publishing and development.
Probably true about that website so then just go torrent it for free if you don't care about paying for it. The news had a story about movie sites like that which are run by organized crime and the movie studios are mad. Personally I think sling is doing it to themselves by charging too much and also making winmo converts pay again for the same app, along with dropping support for the sling classic customers. They are getting greedy and people are revolting.

Greedy?
I suppose they have developers that work for free on a project that has taken more than a year to complete. Do you work for free? I don't.
The droid version of the player is significantly better than the WinMo version ever was and much more usable. Many of the operations work just fine with Slingbox AV even though it is not fully supported.
As for dropping support for older technologies, gee time does move on. It is not that uncommon that new technologies come along that no longer support older hardware. It happens.. And it is not like they have not been talking about new technologies not supporting the older boxes now for years.
They do provide an upgrade discount for registered users of the older boxes to get newer ones. If they were greedy they would not offer that.
If their users think the price is too high, they won't buy. If sales are slow Slingmedia will do what most companies do when products are not moving.
Promoting theft is not cool, whether using a torrent or a hack site. Saying it is okay because the a product is overpriced is not an excuse.
Should I go sit in time out now for voicing my opinion of a greedy company.
What if MS made you buy office 2010 because you have win7 but Vista users could still use office 2007? I bought a license and am not buying another.

I just discovered the existence of this game. where is it on the Market? It doesn't seem to be searchable with the term "Eternal Legacy". Gameloft's own website seems to require that one enters a service provider.
With the Transformer being an WiFi only device it doesn't have a service provider.
does anyone know how to get this game working on the transformer?
I'll go ahead and cover this. Gameloft is protesting the Android Market place. As such, they pulled all apps from the market and decided to sell them via their own means. The apps are available on their website via a moronic text system that more often than not, fails. None of the games are currently built for tablets, honeycomb or tegra optimized. So, unfortunately, until Gameloft offers the games on the site as such, you are SOL.
They're idiots...thats all I have to say.

So why are they protesting the market?

The reason, as far as I know, is unannounced. Weird move considering it's the largest phone platform currently on the market. Sure, they're not paying the google fee for apps but I think they lost the vast majority of sales by not being a presence on the market and making it difficult to get their product.
Time will tell
P.S. this game doesn't support tegra2 and will not run on the transformer, even if you find ways of installing it.
Gameloft really does have some of the best games ever, but they suck for not being in the market. And I wish they would start supporting tegra2 I really want to play this game on my tablet!
wonder who their marketing genius is behind this decision....personally will only buy games through the market...it's buggy at times but overall works well. Guess they're trying to build demand for the product. Probably some young hipsters trying to buck the man.

If anyone is willing to spend the $5 to try them while I am talking myself into being a guinea pig at least they have the buy one get one deal going on. Asphalt 6 and NOVA for $5? Yes please.

The only reason why the Market exists is because there are dullards who can't Google the software websites for themselves.
The Market never existed in Windows Mobile, and I was able to find more quality software and information about software than Android.
So to cater to a unwashed masses of retards, software companies have to submit to Google's and Apples dumb down gateway system, letting them restrict freedom thru regulating on what kind of software is allowed and take a cut too.
Like with everything, masses of uninformed people are the single greatest barrier to freedom for everyone.

At the end of the day, it's all about convenience. If you can't offer that to your market...they aren't going to want the product. It is completely inconvenient for the masses to go to their site, enter MORE billing info, have a game TEXTED to you, download it via a usually broken link, then finally play it.
I was part of the old winmo crew and I fully appreciated downloading software from the companies site...but guess what!? This wonderful concept where all these applications were put in one spot ON MY PHONE with one billing method was invented and gosh darn it, I just think thats a swell place to get my apps!
If they do not want to fall into the market, they're missing 98% of the average phone users in todays world
So yes, Gameloft made a very horrible decision. Lesson here? Don't make your product hard to get.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was something to do with a clash over Gameloft's terrible licensing policy.
I think Gameloft want to optimize its game based on specific hardware.
And I definitely would not complain since:
1. the price is way cheaper compared to the marketplace, (probably the price differs from a country to another)
2. alternative payment option. the games can be paid through telco provider by premium sms charge instead of credit card. Quite convenience.

Do you think that possibly there could be intelligent informed users of Android devices who for their own reasons like the Android Market and (gasp) even some of them use the market and other means of getting the apps that they want?
Honestly...this was a pretty ignorant post...
Most of the developers that are protesting the Android market don't like the fact that people can get a refund when they find out that the game sucks.
These developers prefer the Apple market because they can develop crap games and then the consumer is out of luck once they have your money.
Anyway... it's usually about the refund system. Google has cut it back to 15 minutes because enough developers complained, and I'm sure it won't be long before they do away with it altogether.

This whole thought process I think is damning themselves. I know I've been less click happy on buying an app since they lowered the refund time. I had the market bug and not install the app (when it was 24 hours) and I couldn't get it installed until after the refund time was over, so I fear something similar will happen still and I only have 15 minutes to figure it out. If they get rid of it altogether, I'll deal without most paid apps. At the moment I already refuse to pay for an app through amazon because of their policy.
Of course I might not be the majority, but the return policy was a major reason (one of many) why I jumped ship from Apple and went with Android in the first place.
So far, I've tried the tiger emulators, and a couple of the oid ones.
Anyone know of some that are efficient and thus great for battery life? Any that support cheat codes? Tiger tried adding cheats but they didn't work, and his apps were pulled from the market.

You mean pirated from a guy who stole open source software and is reselling it?
It is free software, and there is nothing wrong with going around paying for this particular piece of software.
Free open source software, in the FSF sense of the term, includes reselling it among its freedoms. What license does Mupen 64 have?
It's just my personal belief that open source stays free throughout anyone trying to do anything different with it. It's the only thing I will take without paying, and not feel guilty for.

Imo this constitutes a job. And in a civil society where people have morals. People get paid for there hard work. Your morals might be diffrent though
How would you feel if your boss said. Dya know what, I've decided i'm not paying you for the last weeks work?
That is a little different, and I have learned to stay away from analogies as they can all be picked apart no matter how much one invests in believing it is the be all end all.
I will only see fit to pay for his work if he creates a project himself, and not take another free project tweak it and charge for it. I believe that Google made the right decision on not allowing him to charge for a free open source project, and that allows me to use the "free" work with a clear conscience.

The Real64 app was worse than what Yonghz did. But both of these are in the wrong. N64oid should not be paid for at all unless we get something in writing from the original Mupen64 team signing off on him charging for the emulator.
Until then, we should all treat it as fair game.

Mupen64 is licensed under v2 of the GPL, which allows the sale of software licensed under it.
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#DoesTheGPLRequireAvailabilityToPublic
He's allowed to sell it. He just needs to make the source available in some way if he made any direct changes to it. Simply creating an Android wrapper that makes calls to the software in question wouldn't violate that. Even offering the source only by snail mail is enough to satisfy the GPL.
If you were right, commercial Linux distributions wouldn't be able to sell retail copies of their distros - and they do and have for years with no complaint from anyone.
So yeah... /thread.
So it is alright if it is obtained by not buying it. Which we should all do, instead of encouraging people to throw their money away at this developer.

No, what don't you understand?? Your not allowed to steal it, and Yonghz is allowed to sell it. The reason Yonghz and his emulators were kicked off the market, was that he didnt make the source code available on request, as per the GPL rules.
Hope this hasn't been posted before. Has anyone read about this?
I think it's plausible for this to/can happen.

So much for an English forum! HUH!
There is no way that would happen. Androids shares would drop like a turn you have been holding in for a week. (Yes, thats a comparison)
What? Plausible for HP to say "Oooo you really need to keep WebOS going for us because maybe in some twisted mirror universe Google will make Android closed source and only available on Motorola"
That's all that has happened. HP have said something stupid about Android.
The article even points out WHY Google wouldn't make Android closed source and only available on Motorola.
It may be a good talking point for WebOS, but it's not going to happen. They would have to make Android closed source in order to make it exclusive to Google/Motorola. And since the source is already out there, non Motorola OEMs could continue development on their own or abandon it and go with something else like Windows Phone. It wouldn't be beneficial for Android and I can't see Google doing it.
Where does google make most of its money?
Why would Google develope and release a free and open sourced operating system everyone can use?
Ad Revenue
If Android were to turn closed sourced, Google would loss profit potential. Meg Whitman is an idiot if she thinks Android is going to be closed sourced.
She's just doing her job.

This would be good for WP7 if true.

Well, she's arguably not doing a very good job of it. webOS needs a cheerleader who will make everyone want to use it. Clumsily spreading rumors and FUD about a competitor is not going to garner support for her product, especially such a farfetched rumor.
Here's an idea: find someone (hint: hp can make hardware!) to make a killer device that runs webOS. Make it inexpensive, powerful, give it great battery life and a great design. Then get it into the hands of every developer you can. Send a box of them to Rovio. Give them to Verizon and AT&T (it better be dual-mode like the 4S) employees for free.
Then, make it a point to tell every vendor, carrier, software developer, reviewer, and blogger how great it and webOS is, citing legitimate points and statistics. Send a device to all them. Make something they love and make sure they know it's here to stay. If hp legitimately wants it to be a viable open source OS that other vendors will want to use, they need to shove it down their throats and make it super easy for devs to get it running.
Finally, don't delay it, don't put it on the market for 2 weeks and pull it, don't jack up the price, and don't give it some stupid achille's heel like a PenTile screen or something.
Then webOS will succeed.
When it goes open source, I'm sure Samsung and HTC will make a device. The hardware was the only thing that was really limiting WebOS.

Considering hp tried and failed to sell it to htc, I think that ship has sailed.
Google would never do that. They need android to be on as many phones as possible to boost ad revenue. They don't make money from the vendors. Also if they were likely to do that they wouldn't have made their flaship Galaxy Nexus a samsung phone, it would have been motorola.

Agreed. Android is an ad/data wet dream for Google.
The data and social engineering aspects for targeting advertisements are massive. They've already invaded your Internets with google and computers with Chrome.
We all hear about all these anonymous usage statistics, but sometimes I'm surprised at how targeted the advertisements feel sometimes.
Probably one of the things that scared me the most was that I recently received a Motorcycle magazine. I've been interested in getting one for a while, but have never actively given my information to anyone before... Just using google, and looking at review of bikes. It's kind of scary that someone got my information, and was able to (at least I feel like) target those advertisements at me.
the google & motorola marriage was approved and completed already by the court
yet Android is still open source
so that old news is just HP trying to get some fly time and pitch WebOS again, but failed yet again
Just throwing this out there for anyone asking how does Google make money on the OS? Well maybe they don't make it directly on the OS its self but they make .30 cents every time a developer sells an app. That adds up pretty quick.
edit:
Unless of course the app is free.

Google generates 97% percent of its revenue through ads and they have other income sources as well. Good luck finding app income in that 3%. Probably it is 0.003% of that 3%.
Also paid apps are not that popular in the Android market.

Define "...not that popular..."
Are you saying compared to Apple or what exactly? Whats the basis?

He means its a known fact apple users buy more apps than android ones. That's based on various statistics so not just a subjective opinion though the reasons for it are not so clearcut.

I've beta tested a few things and I'm surprised at how unappreciative developers are of their beta testers. Most recently it was swift key. Honestly the flow kind of sucked in its first iteration compared to swype (or even the stock swype keyboard) but I stuck with it and provided feed back hoping it would get better and I would be rewarded for my efforts. When their release version came out i got an email the next day with a $2 discount and that my beta version was expired.
So now in addition to my time they want to take my money. And they won't even let me keep using the beta to avoid paying.
At least it wasn't as bad as solid explorer. They didn't even offer a discount. Just flipped all of their beta testers the bird and shut down the beta.
So is this behavior typical of developers? I think the least they could do is give their app for free to the beta testers that contributed to making their product market worthy.
Hmm, I've had the complete opposite experience. Swiftkey's beta program has been great to me. Either because I purchased Swiftkey 2.x or because I also signed up as a VIP to receive Swiftkey 3 beta (from awhile ago), I receive updates and emails about their betas usually the day of or day after blogs publicize them. Seems great to me, especially since they include the direct apk in each email. I don't see the issue here.
You sound unnecessarily riled though, they gave you a $2 discount off a $4 app for beta testing it. Additionally, Swiftkey frequently has a sale on their tablet and phone app even outside of holidays. Swype, before they included OTA updates, had a measurably worse practice. The only way you knew about newer betas was because your version stopped abruptly when you typed and you had to log into their site to download a newer beta. There was no supporting email system like what Swiftkey has.
Edit: I just checked and Swiftkey is $2 right now. Hasn't it been on sale since Swiftkey Flow was officially included?

I'm not sure I'm at the "riled" stage. More just surprised. Seems a little nickel and dime since if they don't have beta testers they'll just have to deal with customer complaints which will cost more in the long run than the $2 they made off me and a few hundred others.

But you do though, just from the tone in your OP. I added an edit as well to my prior post. Why couldn't you use the $2 discount to get the app for free? According to different blogs, it has been on sale since officially updated the other day.

Kinda shot yourself in the foot there. You were trying to belittle my point and instead you proved it. I didn't even know they offered the same discount to everyone. So they really offered nothing to their beta testers.

Herein lies the misunderstanding. I read it as they gave you a $2 discount for beta testing where you would get the app for free. The latter part of your post doesn't warrant a response.
Gibscreen said:
Well since this post has devolved into name calling, it's not about the money retard. It's value for services. And get your head out of the sand. Every other industry lets beta testers keep the product for free.
But go right ahead and give away your time for free. When you start crying about not getting paid by your employer I'll just say they gave you shelter for 8 hours a day in exchange for your work.

That's a false equivalence if I've ever seen one. If I were working 8 hours a day on improving software I would expect to be reimbursed for my time. But then again, that would mean I would be employed by the software company and payment for my extensive services would be customary.
Swiftkey is a keyboard app for a phone. I'm already going to be using a keyboard app on my phone anyway. They let me see the fruits of their labors long before the average customer does so in return I report any problems I run into. That's the relationship.
so is this where i say i bought swiftkey back in the day for $0.10 and when flow went to the full app, it's now included with my original dime purchase?
it was one of those 10 apps for .10 week's.

To this day I will never understand the rationale of people who complain about the cost of an app when they have a $50/month smartphone plan and a $500+ smartphone.

Seriously? Anyone who doesn't know how to get the app for free is an idiot. For those of us who want to go about getting it legitimately, carry on.
The OP was intended to discuss the somewhat unfair practice of developers taking people's time to develop their product, which they then sell to other people. All while they penny pinch and fail to appreciate the contributions of their beta testers. I'm truly shocked that people are so developer minded that they can't even look at this issue objectively and see that the developer gets a HUGE benefit for pretty much nothing in return. We get the privilege to use their buggy product for a few months? That's the benefit?
This could have been something that a developer could have noticed and said to themselves "you know these people do provide me with a benefit. How about if I show them I'm grateful." Not likely but at least possible. Instead they'll look at this thread and carry on as usual. Congratulations.
SwiftKey 4 is fantastic on my phone. I've beta tested a lot of things and I never once expected ANYTHING in return. I have gotten things but never sought them out.
I don't like swift key. The space bar is too small. I keep accidentally hitting the period instead which.makes.my.writing.look.like.this.
Did they change this in version 4? Or heck, at least give the option to?
Edit: nope. The period is still. Ridiculously big for no reason, taking up. Precious space bar space. Time to. Uninstall again. I apparently had this keyboard purchased from back when it. Was on sale for like. 40 cents.
Edit: I took screenshots of the stock Android keyboard and SwiftKey and found them identical in length. It was probably a mental thing. I do hate how this thing auto spaces after pressing period though. I also dislike the number layout. These are things I wish the developer would consider making options for.

If I'm not mistaken you can turn that off in settings.
OP - perhaps you should just enjoy the fact that they allowed you to beta test in the first place. When Swiftkey originally hit the scene beta testing was limited to a few and in almost every instance a user who had already purchased the app.
If McDonald's was test marketing the McRib in your area and gave you one for free does that entitle you to free McRibs for life?
Step off your high horse and spend 2 bucks.

I'M gonna throw my two cents...
shouldn't you want to pay for the finished product? show's appreciation for someones hard work and time? tesing a beta isn't a reward, or privilege, you do it on your own free will because you expressed interest in a product.

I will chime in just for the sake of it, we all got the email about final release and one thing that did strike me was in the email they said it was free and not $2, not complaining about the price just the wording and false advertisement of the email I got because before I got the email I read on Endgaget that it was on sale for $2. Checked my email and saw I got one from Swiftkey thanking me for beta testing yadda yadda and at the end saying it was free with a play store link, wrong fail. If you're gonna give a discount than just say it, don't say it's free when it's only free if you already purchased Swiftkey prior. Just my 2ยข.

I find the number layout easier to use. The layout of some punctuation, not so much lol but it is liveable. The Autospace/Autopunctuate can definitely be disabled.
Other than that, the keyboard is fast, the predictive text is accurate, but non-invasive, and it's a keeper for me. All I need is a real theme for it lol.
Meanwhile.. Thread reported. 98% of this thread is pure BS and a waste of forum space. Too much of that here at XDA IMO...
I got the app for free myself. Beta tested then updated the next day after all was said and done. Win-Win.
