Backup protected app to apk - General Questions and Answers

I have tried tirelessly to backup an app to apk. I am rooted but the apk file is not under the data/app which programs use to back it up. I can use titanium backup but I need to eventually be able to install the app without being rooted as the app refuses to run on rooted devices.
Can you backup apps installed to an apk when they are blocked?
How?
I will gladly donate to whoever helps leading to success.

In case anyone wants to do such in the future, I was able to get the apk by using an application called root uninstaller to get the protected app into an apk file that I could use to install on bother devices.

i agree with mistarose about using root uninstaller. it comes in handy also, after you install you can search for it:
# busybox find / -name *jeppesen*.apk

Don't know if it helps but i use ave anti iris to back up apps to apk
Will say not all apps but most

[Q] Keeping XDA Premium app?

Ifi flash a new rom to my phone, how can i keep xda premium?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997R using XDA Premium App
Just download it from the market again........ that is presuming you have actually paid for it. If not use astro or root explorer to make a backup of the .apk that's how I make backups of all my apps, saves downloading them everytime I mess up my phone or decide to change ROM.

Yes i did pay for it haha What folder do the market apps download to?
Edit: nevermind i found it
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997R using XDA Premium App
Download astro file manager open it, press menu choose tools and then app backup........ backup the apps you want to keep and they will appear in a backup folder on your SD card, install the new ROM then reinstall all the backed up apps. Or you could use titanium backup to save your data too.

How to update apps? Please help

I download plenty of beta version apps and homebrew apps (not from market). Is there a way to update these without losing app data by uninstalling and reinstalling the new version. I don't want to lose the app data.
Thanks

Just install the new versions over the old ones. (App will be updated without data loss)
It doesn't let me do that. It tells me the previous version must be uninstalled before installing the new one.

In that case, use an app such as Titanium Backup to backup your data, then uninstall the old app and install the new one. After that, restore the data.
Do I need to root my phone to use that app?

it doesnt let me update , it forces me to uninstall making me lose data.
As stated the only way to do it is do back up the data with titanium back up. Uninstall the app, install new one and then restore the settings.
Also be careful about getting apks from places other then the official app stores or here

Is rooting safe?

As safe as installing apps you get outside of the play store. Safer even. Just do your research

Hi guys. If you have a bit experience on android devices, you'll agree that
there is some stuff which is unremovable, or stuck, just wount unintall.
I greatly reccomend Titanium backup,
which can uninstall even high system apps with root, or, stucked or your installe without root. :victory:

System app mover can make the app like a regular app then you can uninstall as you would any other app?

Did you mean SystemApp Remover? You need root access for that.
Rooted

if you have root, you can do it even with a basic file manager that capable of mounting system. if you dont have root, then you can freeze apps to save some ram directly from settings(for 4.0+)
install root explorer→go system/app→ delete it
Nice tips. After that u must clean dalvik cache too

Gmail app will not update (slimbean)

I recently flashed my skyrocket to slimbean 4.2 and everything works great, extremely responsive with no lags. Only problem is my Gmail app will not update. It tells me to uninstall and try to re install it but I find that it is not possible to do. Does anyone have a Gmail apk or an idea of how to resolve this? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Actually it is 4.1.2

Why can't you uninstall it? Before you do that though, just clear the cache

If it was installed as a /system app it wouldn't allow him to uninstall. If that's the case, use a root file explorer (Super Manager has a ton of features, including a file explorer, you just have to give it root permissions), navigate to /system /app and delete gmail2.apk (or whatever your file is named). You should then be able to download a new version from Google Play.
Let me guess...
Inverted GApps?
I ran into that too (as well as some other apps too). I uninstalled it through TiBU, rebooted, and installed from the Market instead. Worked great.
It didn't work until I rebooted.
It must be a system app which is why I cannot uninstall. I will try those suggestions and let you know if I run into any other problems. Thank you for your input.

Side load APK without it showing in Play Store

Hi all
I want to side load an app which I have the APK for but don't then want it to show as installed on the Play store.
At the moment I have extracted the APK file using ES File Explorer then uninstalled it from the device. I then side load through a file explorer.
But it pops back up in the play store as installed on device.
Any help welcome

Are you rooted? I think using Titanium Backup would work.
Sent from my Motorola Electrify using xda app-developers app
Not rooted and the phone I want to do this on won't be rooted so kind of rules it out.
I have just tried downloading a file from the Amazon app store and repeating the process and when I install that APK it does not show on installed apps. If you search for the app in the Play store it shows as installed however.
I can kind of live with that but otherwise ideas welcome

can you be more clear on what you are trying to achieve ?
if you install any app using apk directly then open that app in playstore then yes it does show up as installed but if you see in the list of my apps(press options in playstore and it will be the first option) then it wont be listed ..
Does it have to be sideloaded? If not, create a secondary google account, install it via that account, then remove the account. Another option would be to decompile the apk and alter the androidmanifest.xml to make it incompatible with your phone. Not that straightforward, though...
