I download plenty of beta version apps and homebrew apps (not from market). Is there a way to update these without losing app data by uninstalling and reinstalling the new version. I don't want to lose the app data.
Thanks

Just install the new versions over the old ones. (App will be updated without data loss)
It doesn't let me do that. It tells me the previous version must be uninstalled before installing the new one.

In that case, use an app such as Titanium Backup to backup your data, then uninstall the old app and install the new one. After that, restore the data.
Do I need to root my phone to use that app?

it doesnt let me update , it forces me to uninstall making me lose data.
As stated the only way to do it is do back up the data with titanium back up. Uninstall the app, install new one and then restore the settings.
Also be careful about getting apks from places other then the official app stores or here

Is rooting safe?

As safe as installing apps you get outside of the play store. Safer even. Just do your research

I searched but couldn't find a thread. So can someone tell me how to install the new Android Market on my unrooted Evo?

I am on MIUI, and to my knowledge they didn't have the latest version in their recent release. Last night I believe mine updated automatically. I could be wrong, but I personally didn't manually update anything. I woke up this morning and it was updated to the most recent version. You may turn on your autosync and everything to see if it does it automatically.
If you have the apk. Uninstall any market updates from settings and use adb to push the new apk to /system/app/Vending.apk. this will overwrite your original vending apk so you might want to back it up first.

Just download and install like a normal app, its just a upgrade and you can downgrade if needed.

It should work on non rooted phones too

I am trying to buy an app from the market, but it tells me there is an error. I cleared cache, wiped app data, checked my cc info from my computer. I can buy stuff via my pc, but not my phone. Thoughts? Suggestions?

I Have no options to downgrade or remove updates. I can disable and reenable it, Which makes me accept terms and conditions again but still gives me an error code when trying to buy something

you might want to grab an older version of the market app from somewhere, there are plenty of Gapps packages available on the internet.
It's what worked for me when i couldn't install anything from the market. Restore an old backup, and re-upgrade. That fixed it.
The way I did it was through clearing the cache in settings and uninstalling updates. It worked for me after that.

Went into script manager and tried to uninstall, it wouldn't let me. It asked what I wanted to do with the file, and gave options, one is them being install, so installed vender and phonsky again. Went into apps, play was twice is normal size, had the option to uninstall updates, I did so, and cleared cache. Nothing but an error.

it would be good if you post wich error Google Play tell you, then if someone already fixed that can help you.
I've got a problem with google play, it doesn't install anymore any app, free or shareware, so i removed market and installed an older .apk found on the web, from then on, also after the re-update it started again to work. Also if your phone is rooted you can avoid the automatic update.
I hope this could be useful
Sooooo using rom toolbox, I uninstalled play. I grabbed a very old school market, it worked, but it didn't want to update to play. I junked that, I grabbed inverted market (black and blue) and still the same issue.

I have tried tirelessly to backup an app to apk. I am rooted but the apk file is not under the data/app which programs use to back it up. I can use titanium backup but I need to eventually be able to install the app without being rooted as the app refuses to run on rooted devices.
Can you backup apps installed to an apk when they are blocked?
How?
I will gladly donate to whoever helps leading to success.

In case anyone wants to do such in the future, I was able to get the apk by using an application called root uninstaller to get the protected app into an apk file that I could use to install on bother devices.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
i agree with mistarose about using root uninstaller. it comes in handy also, after you install you can search for it:
# busybox find / -name *jeppesen*.apk
Don't know if it helps but i use ave anti iris to back up apps to apk
Will say not all apps but most

Hi all
I want to side load an app which I have the APK for but don't then want it to show as installed on the Play store.
At the moment I have extracted the APK file using ES File Explorer then uninstalled it from the device. I then side load through a file explorer.
But it pops back up in the play store as installed on device.
Any help welcome

Are you rooted? I think using Titanium Backup would work.
Sent from my Motorola Electrify using xda app-developers app
Not rooted and the phone I want to do this on won't be rooted so kind of rules it out.
I have just tried downloading a file from the Amazon app store and repeating the process and when I install that APK it does not show on installed apps. If you search for the app in the Play store it shows as installed however.
I can kind of live with that but otherwise ideas welcome

can you be more clear on what you are trying to achieve ?
if you install any app using apk directly then open that app in playstore then yes it does show up as installed but if you see in the list of my apps(press options in playstore and it will be the first option) then it wont be listed ..
Does it have to be sideloaded? If not, create a secondary google account, install it via that account, then remove the account. Another option would be to decompile the apk and alter the androidmanifest.xml to make it incompatible with your phone. Not that straightforward, though...
