Hi all
I want to side load an app which I have the APK for but don't then want it to show as installed on the Play store.
At the moment I have extracted the APK file using ES File Explorer then uninstalled it from the device. I then side load through a file explorer.
But it pops back up in the play store as installed on device.
Any help welcome

Are you rooted? I think using Titanium Backup would work.

Not rooted and the phone I want to do this on won't be rooted so kind of rules it out.
I have just tried downloading a file from the Amazon app store and repeating the process and when I install that APK it does not show on installed apps. If you search for the app in the Play store it shows as installed however.
I can kind of live with that but otherwise ideas welcome

can you be more clear on what you are trying to achieve ?
if you install any app using apk directly then open that app in playstore then yes it does show up as installed but if you see in the list of my apps(press options in playstore and it will be the first option) then it wont be listed ..
Does it have to be sideloaded? If not, create a secondary google account, install it via that account, then remove the account. Another option would be to decompile the apk and alter the androidmanifest.xml to make it incompatible with your phone. Not that straightforward, though...

Thanks for replies so far guys.
To answer the question above, please basically trying to have an app installed but if the account is looked at using the Play store on a PC it won't show it as being installed.

I figure why not and downgrade to the classic android market, don't care for Google play much. So how would I downgrade to a very early version like that and prevent it from re-updating back to Google play?

Well, you could find an apk somewhere for an older version (extract from a rom, for example) and delete/freeze market updater apk.
This is a good idea

[APK] Old Market v2.3.6
What coccolino_dbro said. Here's the apk for old Market v2.3.6. Got it from BlackICE ROM for HTC DHD.
Thank you, so I would freeze market updater with nobloat and then install this apk which would replace the current one?

I disabled the market updater with nobloat, that should hold right?

Does it work then?
Well I disabled it with nobloat, but after a reboot the icon changed and it upgraded to the version where the shopping bag android icon changed a little. So I tried freezing it, after a reboot it was back to Google play.

Sent from my SGH-T679 using xda premium
Try deleting MarketUpdater.apk and the Google Play apk through a root file browser. I think Google play apk is called Phonesky.apk and not Vending.apk. Anyway delete both those files from your /system/app folder and then move the old market apk to the folder. Set permissions to rw--r--r (same as all the other apps in the folder) and reboot. Should work now. Copy the MarketUpdater.apk to your SD card before deleting, just in case.

Seems I cannot run a logcat on JB ROMS anyone else have that issue? If not please tell me that im doing wrong because I hate posting issues or found bugs on threads and am not able to provide a dev with a logcat. Thanks.
Are you trying to get the logs using adb or using an in phone app?
If you are using an app JB restricts access to the logs. They can only be accessed by system apps.
There are apps on the play store that will convert regular apps to system apps. Then log apps will have access to the logs.

sweet thanks i was going to ask, after googling...so the manual way would be to: Find the app in your sd card and copy it - go to root folder-system-click r/w to r/o-paste it-go to pasted app and long press-permission set to rw-r-r.
i tried it and failed but i think i was suppose to restart the device.....but the app works like a charm and logcat works now
I have tried tirelessly to backup an app to apk. I am rooted but the apk file is not under the data/app which programs use to back it up. I can use titanium backup but I need to eventually be able to install the app without being rooted as the app refuses to run on rooted devices.
Can you backup apps installed to an apk when they are blocked?
How?
I will gladly donate to whoever helps leading to success.

In case anyone wants to do such in the future, I was able to get the apk by using an application called root uninstaller to get the protected app into an apk file that I could use to install on bother devices.

i agree with mistarose about using root uninstaller. it comes in handy also, after you install you can search for it:
# busybox find / -name *jeppesen*.apk
Don't know if it helps but i use ave anti iris to back up apps to apk
Will say not all apps but most

I download plenty of beta version apps and homebrew apps (not from market). Is there a way to update these without losing app data by uninstalling and reinstalling the new version. I don't want to lose the app data.

Just install the new versions over the old ones. (App will be updated without data loss)
It doesn't let me do that. It tells me the previous version must be uninstalled before installing the new one.

In that case, use an app such as Titanium Backup to backup your data, then uninstall the old app and install the new one. After that, restore the data.

it doesnt let me update , it forces me to uninstall making me lose data.
As stated the only way to do it is do back up the data with titanium back up. Uninstall the app, install new one and then restore the settings.
Also be careful about getting apks from places other then the official app stores or here

I don't have a copy of the old apk, but Prl91 made an installer that comes with the old apk. I use it every time I switch ROMs and it still works great.

I've had that happen before. What solved it for me was clearing data for google wallet in application manager and then uninstalling google wallet. After that I rerun the wallet installer and it works fine.
If you are using the installer try the following steps during install:
1. Install wallet for your setup (VZW and TW/AOSP)
2. After the installer reboots the phone, open wallet and run through the whole setup. Tap to pay shouldn't fail now.
3. Update wallet through the play store
4. Open wallet and make sure tap to play is still working
5. Use the wallet installer to restore build.prop
That is what works for me.
sorry but I used another method to get the build prop open everything works but I can't get it to set up and the method that you are asking me to try do I need to use the computer I read the instructions but I'm not sure besides just on the application that I need to download from the Play Store? And thanks so much for the help you're clear this up for me thanks again.

You don't need a computer to do the method that I described. On your phone, just download and install "WalletInstaller.apk" from the thread I linked earlier, then follow the directions in the above post. The wallet installer app runs right on your phone.
Before you proceed with the installer, you will want to restore your build.prop to how it was originally before you edited it. If you're not wanting to use the wallet installer app, perhaps someone else could help out because I don't know the steps necessary to get tap to pay working manually. From the description of the wallet installer app, it does more than just edit the build.prop. I have no idea what else it does, but it works for me.
Okay thanks a lot everything that you told me up i clearly understand now you was very helpful thanks again.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
You're welcome. Hopefully everything works alright. I just did this a few days ago when I switched ROMs, so I know it still works.
Yes I know you guys just got the thing working making me jealous now I just gotta go in and put the build.prop back to where it was and then I will try this method that you told me to try I will let you know what happens.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
Hey quick question I notice that the build.prop will change if you flash a nother rom am I correct but what if you just go to a backup will that also change the build.prop?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
Yes. The build.prop will restore to whatever it was at the time of the backup.

I certainly appreciate that, but if you want to donate to someone, it should be to the creator of the wallet installer app.

You can restore the build.prop at the very end. First confirm tap to pay works on google wallet as installed by the wallet installer app, then confirm that tap to pay still works after google wallet is updated through the play store. If tap to pay is still working after google wallet is updated, then you can restore build.prop using the wallet installer app.
Again thank you for helping me and being patient with me I just redid the Google app installer I clean data and uninstall wallet before now I'm waiting and see will that catch I don't know how long it took when you was setting it up how long did you have to wait again thank you for your help
