Gmail app will not update (slimbean) - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

I recently flashed my skyrocket to slimbean 4.2 and everything works great, extremely responsive with no lags. Only problem is my Gmail app will not update. It tells me to uninstall and try to re install it but I find that it is not possible to do. Does anyone have a Gmail apk or an idea of how to resolve this? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Actually it is 4.1.2

Why can't you uninstall it? Before you do that though, just clear the cache

If it was installed as a /system app it wouldn't allow him to uninstall. If that's the case, use a root file explorer (Super Manager has a ton of features, including a file explorer, you just have to give it root permissions), navigate to /system /app and delete gmail2.apk (or whatever your file is named). You should then be able to download a new version from Google Play.

Let me guess...
Inverted GApps?
I ran into that too (as well as some other apps too). I uninstalled it through TiBU, rebooted, and installed from the Market instead. Worked great.
It didn't work until I rebooted.

It must be a system app which is why I cannot uninstall. I will try those suggestions and let you know if I run into any other problems. Thank you for your input.

Boot into recovery, wipe cache & dalvik-cache. Reboot, from Settings --> Applications --> Manage Applications, find Maps, then select "Force Stop", "Clear Data" and "Clear Cache".
See if it behaves after all that.
If not, you can try rebooting into recovery again and repair permissions.
You could also try over-writing the Maps.apk in /system/app/ with the 5.3 one from /system/app/data/ (you'll need to rename it from com.google.android.apps.maps-1.apk to Maps.apk). That'll force the "system" version to be the current one.

Cant change lockscreen after uninstalling stock gallery?

I couldn't stand the stock gallery so i uninstalled it and now i can't change my lock screen? So i went to titanium backup to restore it and it can't because it has a check mark next to wich means it just backedup the data not the app so i long pressed it and selected search market and downloaded/installed it and its the same version and it even let me restore the data for it but i still cant change the lockscreen it just force closes when i got to settings/display/wallpaper/lockscreen/gallery. I also noticed its now a user app before it was a system app i think, would that matter? Any ideas let me know, thanks.

You have to copy the app into system/app then install...that worked for me for another apk I needed installed into system

Where does the market install the apps i cant find it? And do i just copy the apk and paste to system/apps?
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
Ok i tried putting the gallery. Apk file i got from google in the system/app folder then installing it but it just installs it to /data/app. I also tried copying the installed file in /data/app to system/app but it still force closes when i try to set a lockscreen wallpaper. Is there a way to install a user app as a system app? Maybe if i cant get this to work ill just re-odin i guess.

Try to push the. Apk you got into system/app folder the reboot don't install it.
If that doesn't work after reboot, then install it
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA Premium App
Well it worked as far as just pushing the apk into system/app and now its installed as system app but it still force closes so im just going to reflash. Thanks for the help though.

Android Makret wont update to Google Play

Im currently on Richie390's MIUI 2.3.24 rom and having a little problem and anyone using that build or knows anything help would be useful. Last weeks build my market updated to the google play store and was working fine and everything, i then updated my rom to the more current rom which is the 2.3.24 and now my google play store has reverted back to android market. i tried downloading the apk and installing manually but it keeps saying install unsucessful. i also tried the clear data and open market and it should update on its own but none of them work. Any help?
Why does it matter? Significant changes are the icon change and name.

Just something that bothers me a little and I liked the interface of how they setup the "My Apps" screen.

Just use a root explorer and overwrite the old vending apk in system/app?
I've never used an MIUI rom but I'm assuming you still flash gApps zip like the other roms, you could unzip the gApps you're using, copy the updated vending apk into the app folder and rezip the files and flash it

make a backup in CWM.
then boot your rom, and use something to remove the market, or just delete the .apk
try re-installing it then
if you still cant get it working, you could always try pushing it to the phone via ADB from your computer... but that seems like it would be a bit too much work for just a few non necessary changes.
Appreciate all the help, ill give some of the advice a try and see if maybe one of em works LOL

Only other way rom will auto update market to 3.5.1.5 is if your on a ics rom. Your not missing much if your not on latest market tho.. Its a mess

I'm on a stock based ROM and I have the newest market.
It isn't only for ICS.
Tried everything to no avail, I'm using Richie's miui rom, could just be the rom itself =/

Its nothing you worry about, seriously.

BTW, whoever said there weren't any differences between Market versions hasn't played around with it much. The latest version of Google Market, hmm, Play, is a mess, especially when comes the time to figure out how to display purchased apps separately from all the other crap I may have had the misfortune of trying in the past. There is also no way I can find to filter the previously-installed app list: a simple alphabetical sort option would greatly help.

You flashed a gapps package? You can't really install market from the apk. You can force it through root explorer but just flashing gapps again should solve it. Make sure it's a gapps package with play already packaged. Otherwise give it a day, it should update itself

I am trying to buy an app from the market, but it tells me there is an error. I cleared cache, wiped app data, checked my cc info from my computer. I can buy stuff via my pc, but not my phone. Thoughts? Suggestions?

I Have no options to downgrade or remove updates. I can disable and reenable it, Which makes me accept terms and conditions again but still gives me an error code when trying to buy something

you might want to grab an older version of the market app from somewhere, there are plenty of Gapps packages available on the internet.
It's what worked for me when i couldn't install anything from the market. Restore an old backup, and re-upgrade. That fixed it.
The way I did it was through clearing the cache in settings and uninstalling updates. It worked for me after that.

Went into script manager and tried to uninstall, it wouldn't let me. It asked what I wanted to do with the file, and gave options, one is them being install, so installed vender and phonsky again. Went into apps, play was twice is normal size, had the option to uninstall updates, I did so, and cleared cache. Nothing but an error.

it would be good if you post wich error Google Play tell you, then if someone already fixed that can help you.
I've got a problem with google play, it doesn't install anymore any app, free or shareware, so i removed market and installed an older .apk found on the web, from then on, also after the re-update it started again to work. Also if your phone is rooted you can avoid the automatic update.
I hope this could be useful
Sooooo using rom toolbox, I uninstalled play. I grabbed a very old school market, it worked, but it didn't want to update to play. I junked that, I grabbed inverted market (black and blue) and still the same issue.

Backup protected app to apk

I have tried tirelessly to backup an app to apk. I am rooted but the apk file is not under the data/app which programs use to back it up. I can use titanium backup but I need to eventually be able to install the app without being rooted as the app refuses to run on rooted devices.
Can you backup apps installed to an apk when they are blocked?
How?
I will gladly donate to whoever helps leading to success.

In case anyone wants to do such in the future, I was able to get the apk by using an application called root uninstaller to get the protected app into an apk file that I could use to install on bother devices.

i agree with mistarose about using root uninstaller. it comes in handy also, after you install you can search for it:
# busybox find / -name *jeppesen*.apk
Don't know if it helps but i use ave anti iris to back up apps to apk
Will say not all apps but most
