Hi,
We're going away for holidays in America soon and realised we're going to need a GPS app to navigate us around. I was just wondering if XDA had good suggestions for a GPS app? It needs to have complete offline navigation as we plan to put the app on our tablet and phones and also be free if possible.
Thanks.

I don't think there are any free GPS apps for off-line usage. You can cache Google Maps but for your situation that probably isn't going to work.
I have used Sygic & you can buy the US maps for $40. Its not a bad GPS app but it is certainly no replacement for TomTom. You can purchase it on the Play Store.
I use CoPilot Live USA (the version I had was on sale for $5 USD when I got it.
Now it seems to be about $18
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...mFsay5jb3BpbG90Lm5hbWFya2V0LnByZW1pdW11c2EiXQ..
I also see this but not sure how well it work but it's free.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...SwxLDMsImNvbS5hbGsuY29waWxvdC5tYXB2aWV3ZXIiXQ..
I use CoPilot GPS, the free one. It is not bad, not great. I am not sure that there is one that will do spoken turn-by-turn or the cool heads up for ramps and interstate splits. I wish I could download something like my Roadmate for 40 or 50 bux.
CoPilot
I use the paid version. It definitely has spoken turn-by-turn instructions, spoken street names, and major intersection lane guidance.
It is large with full North America maps, a little over 1GB, but it is very thorough.
The newer GPS CoPilot, released in the last few months so far as I know, is smoother than CoPilot Live for me.
Google Maps and Navigation are also surprisingly good, but require a good phone signal. This is mainly useful for local lookups, for me.
Please be aware that all GPS maps will have some old road routing and accuracy gaps.
Welcome, and have a good visit.

Just ran across this, has anyone heard anything? I haven't seen it on any other site and really not familiar with this one.

Yeah, which is getting out of hand (at least, for me). I've had my Slingbox for several years and I've switched mobile platforms during that time. No discount and my licenses go to waste. I'm guessing I'm up to at least $100 in just Slingbox player (WinMo, iPhone, etc.).
It wouldn't bother me, since I do use the app, but I'm guessing they're about to milk me another time when they launch the iPad app. There's no sign they will opt for universal app. Second, their follow up support sucks. They're lucky they have such a useful product because their player development cycle (waaay too long), licensing scheme ("buy the hardware and never pay" except for our software) and support isn't winning a single award.
edit: OH, and another thing... their ridiculous ability to charge $30 for software that they aren't willing to state whether it will work with my Slingbox AV. I get to roll the dice and maybe one day it will go dark.
Been waiting for this app also. Besides the $30 cost there will be nothing better for live streaming from your tv. Had it for windows mobile and iphone. Watched directv all over town. This is the best $30 you can spend. Sucked when they shutdown the sling community forums and opened up the new "staff driven" support forums. Sling community was great and helped a lot of people.

I wonder if you would be able to transfer the iphone to ipad? I am sure this won't work to transfer to android though.

At least its just a one time charge, not sure what the other companies (not t-mobile) charge to have the TV type services.

I'm digging into their forum/answers site and it looks like my old, old Windows Mobile license can transfer so long as the Android player is a trial version that accepts licenses. The iPhone app is a different beast than their usual software since Apple has complete control over the distribution of the app. I guess I learned tonight that it's quite possible to transfer from WinMo to Blackberry to Symbian. Your license is only active on one install.
I'm crossing my fingers they took this into consideration.
why on earth are they charging so damn much of this thing? Really, its just a player, thats a third of what I payed for the slingbox itself. But if this same app works on google tv, I might have a purpose for this app.
"When in your mobile phone provider's area of 3G, 4G or Wi-Fi coverage and connected to a Slingbox® SOLO, PRO or PRO-HD, SlingPlayer Mobile makes it simple to watch and control your living room television at any time from any location."
no dice on my slingbox tuner then i guess

Working on my Slingbox AV but it says "some streams will not work". No clue why "some" wouldn't and others would.

more then likely the older models work perfectly well, but they can sell the solo and pro's for a lot more then a tuner or an AV. It probably all about money. Their site says "tuner and AV is not supported. It is highly recommended to get the newer slingboxs" This is what it said for the iphone moblie app.
hmmm....i guess its about time to finally purchase a slingbox.
not showing up in the market for me -running frf50
edit; now it is using THIS
I have 3 slingboxes at work, an original, pro (i think next model after the original) and a new HD one. Only the HD one works. The iphone version supports all three. The prices on these players is wacked. I don't mind paying but jeez. Buy a $30 app just to find out I need to buy like $600 worth of new boxes. Good looking out Google with the 24 hour refund period.

Google it?
I also think that having to buy the app at full price if you already are a slingbox owner is ridiculous!!! At least give current owners a discount or something!! And it's not like the app is cheap, $30 is type expensive just for the app...no??
Can someone please post the Slingbox.APK if it's ok/allowed or send it to me via PM? so we can see if our current licenses would work??? I'd greatly appreciate it as I'm many others would as well!!!
Best purchase since the N1
still cant see it here....

ridiculous isnt it. And they wonder why piracy is so high.
When you can buy an actual sat nav unit for only £10 more than this its stupid to charge this price for the software only.
Is it finally compatible with dual core phones like the i9100? Until now this app was draining battery like hell on this phone and even draining it while charging!!!
Any news on that matter?

I've tried all the decent Android Sat Navs and although none are perfect Navigon was always my favourite ... until they released 4.0 this month. I am in the UK, they've taken away full postcode search which worked in the previous version 3.6.2 and I've found it quite flaky in places as well. It has always been rock solid until this month - very disappointed.
Can't wait until TomTom is released for Android which is expected late 2011.
can I add + turkey on navigon europe.
I try to put Turkey.map in map folder but nothing.
is there any navigon + UAE maps for Galaxy S II ?

Dumbest programming decision ever?.........You decide.
Vote Oh Yea if you think this has to be a secret plan by some senior executive to alienate the customer base as much as possible.
Vote Oh No if you think this is the sign of hidden genius as they intend to make postcode search a chargeable feature.
I plan to bookmark and note any and all instances where one technology is revealed to be copied by another for future proofs. This is one of those instances. Microsoft is coming out with their version of Apple's Siri known as "Ask Ziggy".
Let it be known on this day that Siri came first and Ask Ziggy came afterwards. When Google produces their version, I will note it also.
http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/02/ask-ziggy-windows-phone-7-counter-to-siri-video/
Android has many third party apps that are like Siri. Skyvi is one i used before, its alright. The Ask Ziggy app for WP7 seems like its a lot better though. I have always wanted a WP7 phone. This is just another reason to maybe get one someday

It isn't difficult to do better than Apple...at least in software. Microsofts PC OSes have always came after Apple's and have always been better. MS's Bing maps has been been better than Google's maps and Apple doesn't even have one of their own...like Bing and Google Maps.

I agree with this. Google maps also has indoor maps now which seems useless to me but a cool feature to have none the less. and apple does have a GPS on the iphones but comes no where close to Gmaps imo
Meh. Siri is kinda useless in day to day activities. I expect this ask ziggy thing to be the same.

I disagree. I have all 3 systems and tested them. The WP7 Bing maps outperformed Google maps and Apple's version wasn't even in the same league as the least of the others. Bing maps was the quickest to load and update, followed by Google maps, which had a tendency to bounce back to a non-zoomed state when I attempted to zoom the screen. Apple's maps took forever to load and would not display a full page.
Bing nav also out-performed Google nav for traffic density and directions. And Apple doesn't have an OEM voice nav ..which is what I meant earlier. But, of course, Google could have updated their software lately. I performed the tests about 3 to 4 months ago.
I prefer Gmap/nav.
voice command has been around for years hasn't it?
all Siri does is talk back... basically.
Speaktoit assistant on Android was released I think month or two before IP4/Siri hit the market, though not as advanced. getting better everyday though.
Vlingo was out a year before Siri, granted it doesn't talk back. excellent car mode.
Google will be out with Majel this year sometime I think.
deeper integration then Siri.
from all the press, they are going for the "Star Trek's computer" type of deal, hence the code name.
will see how all this pans out.
personally, faster just pressing screen then talking to my phone... plus I don't look like some crazy person out in public talking to my phone...
Just used it for a full conversation on the 35 minute trek home. I am thoroughly impressed and would like to donate. Picks up what I say much better than Siri.
There have been different forms of Siri prior to Apple releasing it on their phones. You're right though, there will be none stop "Apple released it first therefore let's stop innovation and let no one else build upon it.
Siri itself is not originally Appelian.
The bought Siri last April. The only thing they added was sweet integration into the core OS.
Think I may turn on the old hd7 and try this out.

Hello, nothing can beat Google Maps except those that have the ability to do EVERYTHING offline. In fact, I am looking for a map that does everything Google Maps does (or maybe even more) BUT IN OFFLINE MODE!. For example, navigation, maps, point of interest search, trip planning and routing including public transit information. I've been looking for Copilot but it is just not good enough. Any recommendation.
How about Navigon?

But how come it has so many bad review 3.5 out of 5 if it is that awesome? Plus it costs about $50 for the US and CAN version. It is a bit risky to purchase the "legal" copy base on that. I would give a try if you guys have links for a cracked version.
I tried Here Maps, but not a big fan. I love my Google Now giving me my map notifications and distances. Is there no way to get the Gear S2 talking with Maps? Shame, was really liking this watch but this would be a deal breaker for me
well, now only have here maps, ots a great option, i think in the future, we will have google maps..
yeah thought so too. today first time navigating in the car without watch support. hopefully this will come in the futue
There's an app called "Gear Navigator Companion" in the store that draws on google maps data, working with a companion app on the phone. In my experience, though, it has some of the same flaws and limits as HERE maps. In other words, it needs some work, but with improvements could maybe offer what people want.
I think there are some steps in the right direction. I don't have confidence that Google will support Tizen. This watch really had the chance to destroy the competition but lacks the fundamentals that make Android great and on your wrist.
Sucks because I have the silver with black straps and it looks gorgeous.
Well. This will be the make or break feature for me. If there is no support I will have to return it

Google maps does offer offline navigation if I'm not mistaken. Regardless, I don't need offline navigation. Very, very accurate for me. I'm not sure how this will affect HERE maps but it now belongs to car manufacturers in Germany. Do you think they'd continue to support it on mobile devices?
I've used a lot of different maps, Google maps is by far the best one (in my opinion).
You can have yours and think here is better, I just disagree.
