I plan to bookmark and note any and all instances where one technology is revealed to be copied by another for future proofs. This is one of those instances. Microsoft is coming out with their version of Apple's Siri known as "Ask Ziggy".
Let it be known on this day that Siri came first and Ask Ziggy came afterwards. When Google produces their version, I will note it also.
http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/02/ask-ziggy-windows-phone-7-counter-to-siri-video/
Android has many third party apps that are like Siri. Skyvi is one i used before, its alright. The Ask Ziggy app for WP7 seems like its a lot better though. I have always wanted a WP7 phone. This is just another reason to maybe get one someday

It isn't difficult to do better than Apple...at least in software. Microsofts PC OSes have always came after Apple's and have always been better. MS's Bing maps has been been better than Google's maps and Apple doesn't even have one of their own...like Bing and Google Maps.

I agree with this. Google maps also has indoor maps now which seems useless to me but a cool feature to have none the less. and apple does have a GPS on the iphones but comes no where close to Gmaps imo
Meh. Siri is kinda useless in day to day activities. I expect this ask ziggy thing to be the same.

I disagree. I have all 3 systems and tested them. The WP7 Bing maps outperformed Google maps and Apple's version wasn't even in the same league as the least of the others. Bing maps was the quickest to load and update, followed by Google maps, which had a tendency to bounce back to a non-zoomed state when I attempted to zoom the screen. Apple's maps took forever to load and would not display a full page.
Bing nav also out-performed Google nav for traffic density and directions. And Apple doesn't have an OEM voice nav ..which is what I meant earlier. But, of course, Google could have updated their software lately. I performed the tests about 3 to 4 months ago.
I prefer Gmap/nav.
voice command has been around for years hasn't it?
all Siri does is talk back... basically.
Speaktoit assistant on Android was released I think month or two before IP4/Siri hit the market, though not as advanced. getting better everyday though.
Vlingo was out a year before Siri, granted it doesn't talk back. excellent car mode.
Google will be out with Majel this year sometime I think.
deeper integration then Siri.
from all the press, they are going for the "Star Trek's computer" type of deal, hence the code name.
will see how all this pans out.
personally, faster just pressing screen then talking to my phone... plus I don't look like some crazy person out in public talking to my phone...
Just used it for a full conversation on the 35 minute trek home. I am thoroughly impressed and would like to donate. Picks up what I say much better than Siri.
There have been different forms of Siri prior to Apple releasing it on their phones. You're right though, there will be none stop "Apple released it first therefore let's stop innovation and let no one else build upon it.
Siri itself is not originally Appelian.
The bought Siri last April. The only thing they added was sweet integration into the core OS.
Think I may turn on the old hd7 and try this out.

Well at least you found one good thing.
The one good thing about iphone is how much it made me miss windows mobile.
The iPhone is actually a great phone for if you wanna get away from it all; and by "it all" i mean doing anything productive or worthwhile.

Oh c'mon, paying a dollar for the "Be like Lil' Wayne" app in the app store is totally worthwhile.
How about the fact that if it was not for the iphone and Apples inovative thinking most of the apps and phones we now have based on WM6 would not be available to us yet.
Touch scrolling, accelerometers, larger screens, better browsers, etc.
I never would buy an iphone do to the fact that I cound not add my GPS software or my task managers and customize it the way I like it, but if it wasn't for the great thought process it invoked for so many programmers we would still be stuck with using the stylus.
The only good thing about the iphone is that it made my AT&T ESOP get bigger. THATS IT.
the only reason why the iphone is good is because qualcomm devices make it look good.
One "redeeming" feature is the app store. Even with that feature there are so many useless apps and the Apple store policy keeps any useful apps from being developed.

I believe HTC were the first company to release Touch Nav, Large screens have been around for awhile and Opera has been a fine browser for phone for awhile as well...
All apple has done is released another consumer toy to play with... Windows Mobile/ Windows CE has been around a hell of a lot longer. They have copied the idea of "custom" application, MS and Palm have had custom apps for yeaaaaaaars.
Next you are going to tell me apple invented the mp3!

Good lord, what is this, disinformation central? I've been FAR more productive while mobile in the last 2 weeks since I traded my Fuze in for an iPhone than I ever would have been on the Fuze. As someone who does a lot of web work, the iPhone blows the Fuze or any other WM phone out of the water. The free WordPress app *alone* guarantees that anyone doing mobile blogging will be more productive.
As a 3 year veteran of the great HTC Wizard, I'm a serious lover of Windows Mobile devices, but let's face facts here guys: In 2008, let alone 2009, the current incarnation of Windows Mobile is sadly, woefully and pathetically behind the times. iPhone is, to be sure, a VASTLY overrated device, but statements like this are just as misleading, but in reverse.

WM has certainly been around longer--and it's also been neglected longer, too. The App store is a brilliant innovation, and it's loaded with tons of useful apps (though I'd be lying if I didn't also say that it's loaded with gimmicky horse ****, too). WM truly NEEDS something like the App store, by which I mean that it needs a method for distributing apps and games via download, through the device itself, with a transparent installation process that is easy for users to understand and use.
What Apple really needs to do to take the device to the next step is adopt some WM ideas--specifically it needs to be able to do multitasking (beyond just playing music in the background with the iPod app), it needs cut and paste, and it desperately needs for ALL apps to support a landscape keyboard (Windows Mobile also suffers from this problem). Apple also needs to open the device a bit more for a greater range of app types from a greater range of programmers.
Windows Mobile is good and proven system. iPhone is a relatively new system but it's also very good and it brings a LOT of great ideas to the table.
Neither system is perfect, but where iPhone needs some polish and additional openness, Windows Mobile needs a major overhaul in the User Experience area, because right now it's idly back in about 2004, and that's just sad. Hopefully Microsoft's recent work overhauling the Xbox interface will have some runoff into the Windows Mobile arena.
I look forward to WM7, but for my money, WM6 is a waste of time on a modern device.
Hey friends,
whats up? How you like Android? Is it fulfilling all of your need? Have fun
Being someone that moved from Palm to the Android, I am fully satisfied! The only thing that I missed from palm is the ability to record my phone calls. But this is not Android OS issue it is hardware issue. So I am a happy Android(HTC Desire) user!
Of course! Everything I need in one homescreen, custom ROMs, plus it beats the hell out of an iPhone!
Most of my needs...
..and for the others we have women
Completely satisfied... Anything it didn't do straight out of the box was easy and painless to add. Having been a BB and iPhone user before, I can safely say Android is by far the best for me.
Although... It doesn't make my coffee in the morning and run me a bath when I finish work, so I've been forced to get married to cover these missing functions...
It has far surpassed my needs!
Even satisfied needs I didn't know I had!
Only drawback I can point to with switching over is there needs to be a way to get out of the cloud if you don't want to have your head, contacts and Calendar in those clouds.
And the lack of Sync with PC for Outlook built in is a major inconvenience.
(I have found some 3rd party functionality here none of it perfect yet)
I used to use my WinMo phone like it was intended, mostly as a communications device and for a wireless hotspot. Sometimes a MP3 player and rarely to get web pages or manuals for the devices I use in my work (Broadcast Video Engineer)
Now on android I have dish pointer that lets me know what satellites I can hit through the camera, I have better web to read and get Manuals where I can zoom much quicker and precisely than I could before.
It automatically will update all the programs I have gotten from the marketplace keeping itself up to date.
And the resposiveness of the hardware (1.2 Ghz) is just a pure pleasure!
It allows me to set the machine up in a sense like format (different tabs for different functions) and the widget is everything WinMo Today plugs SHOULD have been.
I am all for brand loyalty and I understand it is hard to leave a house that you spent so much of your life in but I can't ever imagine wanting to go back or onto the very simplistic and uncustomizable WinPho7.
Android isn't perfect but it sure is a lot better than the other OS' I have seen.
Coming from IOS it doesnt seem as smooth or polished but it has been able to do everything I need...
^^
+1...android has lots of customizations..great features but it isnt just as smooth as my iphone was.

The only thing is miss from my iphone is the ability to listen to podcasts at 2x speed. I know there are some apps out there that have a solution for this but they dont work on my Streak.
I would say i'm very Satisfied with android coming from a iPhone was a big upgrade to me. I like the freedom that we have and can customize pretty much everything. But I will admit that the only things I missed from having a iPhone is the music player and some of the apps were pretty sweet.

I guess it depends on your phone and ROM. I use a Galaxy S, and Doc's ROM (fully customized from the kitchen), and my phone literally couldn't be faster. I click something and usually it's done before I lift my finger. Except for 3G (which is pathetic in Australia).

Absolutely! I used an iPhone for a year before switching to Android. A couple months ago, I decided to sell my iPhone so I booted it up to clear everything out, and couldn't figure out how to do anything! Simple actions, like turning on wifi, and finding an app, are multi-step processes there. Android is awesome, simply put.
Android has not failed me so far, not in regards to software. Apps are great, software gets better every update, account syncing makes adding contacts so much easier... I could go on.
That said, I've had my truly great experiences with the software only after I rooted my device, shortly after HTC pushed out their 2.1 Sense ROM for it. Since then, I've used a variety of amazing ROMs, both 2.2 and 2.3, which are much more representative of what Android is capable of when truly optimised to a specific device. I've used Symbian and iOS, but I don't think I'll be looking back from Android any time soon.
Yep! I find it can do everything I want and really fast, plus more. I must say there are some really handy apps out there.
One area which I think could improve is GPS software, I'm talking about offline map GPS software. I use CoPilot and while it's the best I've seen so far on Android, iGO8 on my i900 WinMo is much much better.
Great for multitasking, smooth, very customizable. I love android and will never switch to another os

Android is the best upgrading i ever did, switching from my dumb nokia n97..
The only thing degrading rite now is the android market.. Slowly, day by day, the android market has turned into itunes app market.. Lot's of crap apps rather than really useful apps.. Seriously, what's up with fart apps, stupid bikini puzzle, pointless sexy girl wallpaper apps?? We don't need million stupid apps that cluttering the market.. That is one of the reasons i stop myself from buying an iphone4..
No offense..
it is more than full filing my needs . I do everything with it fun, work, multimedia etc.
Far from satisfied.
Navigation isn't as good as on WM
Keyboard sucks, had to get swype
Can't make calls using phone numbers emailed to me
Email client is soooooo basic, only good thing about it is the ability to connect to 2 exchange servers
Browsing the web is a PITA, go to zoom in, accidently hit a link instead which is too small to read (hence the need to zoom in) and then have to go back and do it again. Also there are many pages/links which it can't handle using default browser/firefox/opera
So many apps, so few decent ones
I recently ordered a Palm Pre- on ebay to use on sprint for about $20. I currently have an Evo but I've been salivating at the Pre3 since it was announced. I've always been a fan of webOs but not the hardware in the Pre to justify me to use my upgrade on it.
But that said, the only thing holding me back from jumping eco-systems is navigation. I LOVE Google Maps/Navigation. It's worth the price of admission on android itself. Is there anything on the Pre or WebOS that would/could replace Google Navigation?(I luv being able to get directions to a friends house from the middle of no where).
Not really. There is Google Maps, but it's pretty far behind its Android counterpart. Then there is open-source Navit, however I have problems getting it to work on my Pre2, and it's not especially intuitive or user friendly. If navigation is important, you might want to think twice, but that is the only gripe I have. The OS is really smooth, pleasant to use. I can't say anything about the Pre- as I jumped on the Pre2 from start (GSM version), but I've been using all OSes there are (except Bada, but who cares!) and I can't really like any other OS any more after using WebOS. I would assume that a god navigation option is in the works, certainly HP realizes it is crucial functionality.
I think one of the US operators also has a proprietary app, but alas, I'm European so I have no clue.
Good luck!
I agree with LazPL, Google Maps on WebOS is missing a lot of the features of the Android version.
I thought you might be interested in this as well. It's the WebOS App Catalogue, online: http://www.precentral.net/app-gallery
could i have your evo
Sprint navigation is pretty good.
Just remember you're gonna be jumping onto an older device so it's not nearly as fast or smooth as the newer Pre 2, and certainly not like the Pre 3 and Veer will be. WebOS is amazing, I love the OS but it's not without it's shortcomings. Luckily they seem to be improving quite a bit now, plus the homebrew community for webOS is AMAZING. I'd definitely suggest going to the precentral forums and installing preware on your new Pre. Overclocking is an option for you and it will certainly help speed things up a bit, but unfortunately battery life on the OG Pre was pretty abysmal. Sprint Navigation comes free with the Sprint Pre, and it works pretty well so luckily you'll have that to use in place of Google Nav.
i began with the pre-, it was good till i tried evo, i liked it but i am waiting for the pre3. try overclocking it will be nicer then.

Google Maps on WebOS is pretty much dead. Palm completely ditched it for WebOS 3.0 and will be using Bing Maps for navigation instead. It still won't be as well equipped as Google Navigation for Android, but "hopefully" HP is working on getting us a ideal navigation tool for the car.
I've had pretty good experiences with Sprint Navigation on the Pre, and while Google Maps isn't the greatest ( I actually think the PalmOS version was better), it works fairly well to. The Ebay route is a good idea, though. I just went the opposite direction - from Pre minus to Android, and between the faster device and the bigger selection of software, there's no way I'd go back. I do miss WebOS, though. In a perfect world, I may have gotten the Pre3 on Sprint... oh well.

Very candid review. If there was bias he kept it well hidden and he did say that he's been using an international SGS2 for the last 6 months. He sang the SGS2 praises a lot. From the video I detected that he expected the ifon 4S to be better than a 6 months old SGS2 but was surprised at how close the devices were in terms of performance and features.
Siri is Apple’s latest Face Time. A marketing maneuver that is more about flash than substance. There is very little that Siri does that is useful that you haven’t been able to do on the Galaxy S II for the past 6 months.

Having tried voice commands on my SGS2 and having seen what Siri does, i'll call complete bull**** on this.
Vlingo and the sgs2's own voice command app are complete junk. They can mostly decipher what i'm saying but all they do is a google search on EVERYTHING. Tt's unreal.
I tell it to play music, it googles "play music". Come on.
Review seems pretty damn biased. I'm not sure what "speed tests" he ran, but everything that's out so far, the 4S wipes the floor with SGS2 and every other android device. This will probably change with ICS.
Another reviewer that has a hard-on for the megahurtz.
The only thing the iPhone 4S is missing is a -slightly- larger screen. 4" would be perfect. Galaxy S2 is a bit too big for me personally - i have to rotate and manage the phone in my hand to be able to reach everything.
Funny story - everyone seems to think changing roms on android devices to gain precious stability and speed is a given (this assumes rooting), yet jailbreak options are never in anyone's feature list.
Maybe you're using voice search and not voice commands or maybe it doesn't care for your accent. I use it to send text messages, make call and set my GPS route when I'm driving all the time and it works without any problems. Sorry that you're a bit hurt or whatever.. it how you come across with that post.

Sure made sense there.
These tests show pretty much nothing.
First the netflix. The iphone didn't even open a video once, for all we know it was on a completely different network or something was broken and it wasn't gonna load at all.
The brower tests. Stating one thing is smoother than the other, based on how far they scroll with a single swipe? Really?

Now, about the voice control.
English is not my native language so i never need english to text someone.
What i would like from voice control is to control the device and have practical use. Something that didn't happen once, in my testing.
I'm not saying i would absolutely want to use it - i dont. I'm just saying that the statement is absurd and android voice control is like comparing apple seeds with apples.
Why am i posting this here, the SGS2 forums, however? I don't know, i found the thread and found the review crazy-biased.
Can't blame any of you, obviously. After all, this is the SGS2 forums and it's pretty much a requirement to be biased towards your own device.

All comparision I have read until now said that SGS2 is better than iPhone 4S so... where is the problem ?
You will say all reviews are biased because they don't have the conclusion you wan't ?
Come on... iPhone 4S is certainly the second best device in the World and it's pretty close to SGS2 (exept for price). It's already a big performance in my opinion.
PS : I think you are right, Siri is better than all others Voice Control Apps. Itns not the faster and maybe not the more accurate but it does more things and the way it does it is pretty cool.
But in French, for exemple, Siri is not as good as it is in English.
PS2 : iPhone 4S is better on Sunspider and Browsermark because :
1) iPhone 4S use a newer version of Webkit (like Honeycomb)
2) iPhone 4S can use 2 cores in a app (like Honeycomb)
If you read the test, you will see that Tegra 2 with Android 2.X is under the SGS2 and the same SoC (at same frequence) with Honeycomb rivals with the 4S. It's because HC have a real dualcore support and a newer version of Webkit. With ICS, or even now with Opera Browser, SGS2 will perform a lot better in these benchmark (it actually does around 1500-1700 with Opera on SunSpider wich is a lot better than iPhone 4S).
But despote benchmarks, in real world, videos show you that SGS2 is already a little faster than iPhone 4S in almost all activity.
After having the opportunity to use both devices I think that the GS2 is the superior device for me.
Viam, you def. Sound like a fanboy to me. I have yet to see the 4s wipe the floor with anything. Siri is nice but a bit of a gimmick. The main problem with it is how long it actually takes to do something! You have to wait for it to respond b4 actually carrying out the task...
As far as im concerned, this update 4s just barely puts it on par with the sgs2.

I tried Here Maps, but not a big fan. I love my Google Now giving me my map notifications and distances. Is there no way to get the Gear S2 talking with Maps? Shame, was really liking this watch but this would be a deal breaker for me
well, now only have here maps, ots a great option, i think in the future, we will have google maps..
yeah thought so too. today first time navigating in the car without watch support. hopefully this will come in the futue
There's an app called "Gear Navigator Companion" in the store that draws on google maps data, working with a companion app on the phone. In my experience, though, it has some of the same flaws and limits as HERE maps. In other words, it needs some work, but with improvements could maybe offer what people want.
I think there are some steps in the right direction. I don't have confidence that Google will support Tizen. This watch really had the chance to destroy the competition but lacks the fundamentals that make Android great and on your wrist.
Sucks because I have the silver with black straps and it looks gorgeous.
Well. This will be the make or break feature for me. If there is no support I will have to return it

Do you really prefer google maps over HERE? No offline navigation, less accurate maps... So why?

Google maps does offer offline navigation if I'm not mistaken. Regardless, I don't need offline navigation. Very, very accurate for me. I'm not sure how this will affect HERE maps but it now belongs to car manufacturers in Germany. Do you think they'd continue to support it on mobile devices?
I've used a lot of different maps, Google maps is by far the best one (in my opinion).
You can have yours and think here is better, I just disagree.
