any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

What ROM did you have on the phone and what ROM are you trying to flash? And this should be in the Q&A section not the development page.

Try heimdall...

Was going to suggest that too.

Probably best to go back to GB with Root, then flash the Heimdall ICS revcovery, then pick your ROM and follow the instructions on the OP.

What did u use to root?

OP...your thread has been moved. Please do not post Q&A threads in the Development section.

Help with cwm installation

I need help installing cwm on my samsung galaxy showcase with cell south I am already rooted but the instructions for cwm on my phone is confusing can someone please help me please pm me

why are you posting this in the development section?
there is a Q&A for this type of stuff.
ask a mod to move it.
now... that being said...
whats the problem.
the instructions can be a bit wierd but if you just follow them step by step and do exactly what it says then you will be fine.
but i too have had issues with installing CWM via rom manager and i do not suggest using it unless you have several hours to keep trying over and over until it works.
you would be better off flashing a rom via Odin3 that already has clockwork installed like the stock roms with CWM and then doing what ever you need to from there.
so... whats the problem?
i will do what i can where i can to help.

[Q] Need CWM for sgs4g 2.3.6 official.

Has anybody got a version of CWM that will work on the sgs4g? I accidentally flashed the galaxy s CWM from rom manager before finding this forum. Nothing has changed on the phone, except if i boot into CWM recovery i always get verification errors.
Also, are there any ROMs for the sgs4g that is running 2.3.6?
Thanks to anybody who can help.
Get rid of ROM Manager. I've read it doesn't work well on this phone. Check out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1380331 for a 2.3.6 ROM with the latest CWM/root/voodoo lagfix.

You should try this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1422824
When it is time to choose a package pick the one that includes the beta 2d kernel from the Kj6 collection. Learning the one click method will also give you every thing you need should you make a mistake and need to recover from a soft brick

It's Heimdall installable, too, which is how I did it. I'm trying to leverage Heimdall more these days in an attempt to learn it better.

This may just be a noob question and I hope I'm posting in the right place. I'm running 2.3.6 as well and want to flash Valhalla Final onto my device. The instructions say you must have pre-installed kernel with clockwork recovery. Do I need to use Heimdall and load a kernel with clockwork recovery or is there another way to get the CWM? I am still learning the basics of all this stuff. Forgive my ignorance.

Since you're already on GB (2.3.6) you can do this, if you're not rooted follow:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_4G#Rooting
Once you're rooted:

Save the wiki to your bookmarks. We're updating it constantly so you'll always get the most up to date info from there. Also spread the word when other users need help, point them to the proper section in the wiki .
Thanks to everyone for their insight. My sgs4g is no more now. Luckily, I learned a lot about flashing with it before it died. Including unbricking. Still haven't gotten heimdall to work. But I think I have been trying to run the regular exe instead of the front end. We'll see. Hopefully I get paid this week to cut on the internet again. Killing me here.

Can u boot into recovery and wipe data factory reset. Also u didnt have to go back to ics you can root jb.
Turn off phone, Vol Up + Power boot into recovery and wipe data/factory reset. Try this first!
If else, Odin a complete factory image. FYI: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1762204 this will completely wipe internal storage, but should revive a soft brick.
