why are you posting this in the development section?
there is a Q&A for this type of stuff.
ask a mod to move it.
now... that being said...
whats the problem.
the instructions can be a bit wierd but if you just follow them step by step and do exactly what it says then you will be fine.
but i too have had issues with installing CWM via rom manager and i do not suggest using it unless you have several hours to keep trying over and over until it works.
you would be better off flashing a rom via Odin3 that already has clockwork installed like the stock roms with CWM and then doing what ever you need to from there.
so... whats the problem?
i will do what i can where i can to help.

OK, I'm helping a friend with his Csouth showcase... He is rooted using the z4 root method. But i cannot seem to find a valid recovery.. And im coming from an HTC device so the whole samsung thing is alien.. I know what I'm doing but ive never owned a samsung device so I'm asking y'all... What is a recovery I can use, something other than Clockworkmod? Or if it's only Clockworkmod can y'all paste me a link to the latest version. I understand rom manager won't work. And I saw the sticky but something about flashing the recovery from recovery didn't sound right to me.. So I'm asking. Any help would be appreciated.

Has anybody got a version of CWM that will work on the sgs4g? I accidentally flashed the galaxy s CWM from rom manager before finding this forum. Nothing has changed on the phone, except if i boot into CWM recovery i always get verification errors.
Also, are there any ROMs for the sgs4g that is running 2.3.6?
Thanks to anybody who can help.
Get rid of ROM Manager. I've read it doesn't work well on this phone. Check out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1380331 for a 2.3.6 ROM with the latest CWM/root/voodoo lagfix.

You should try this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1422824
When it is time to choose a package pick the one that includes the beta 2d kernel from the Kj6 collection. Learning the one click method will also give you every thing you need should you make a mistake and need to recover from a soft brick

It's Heimdall installable, too, which is how I did it. I'm trying to leverage Heimdall more these days in an attempt to learn it better.

This may just be a noob question and I hope I'm posting in the right place. I'm running 2.3.6 as well and want to flash Valhalla Final onto my device. The instructions say you must have pre-installed kernel with clockwork recovery. Do I need to use Heimdall and load a kernel with clockwork recovery or is there another way to get the CWM? I am still learning the basics of all this stuff. Forgive my ignorance.

Since you're already on GB (2.3.6) you can do this, if you're not rooted follow:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_4G#Rooting
Once you're rooted:

Thanks to everyone for their insight. My sgs4g is no more now. Luckily, I learned a lot about flashing with it before it died. Including unbricking. Still haven't gotten heimdall to work. But I think I have been trying to run the regular exe instead of the front end. We'll see. Hopefully I get paid this week to cut on the internet again. Killing me here.

Trust me, I have searched and searched, but not found the answer to this question.
OK, I just received my SGS4G, and had no problem rooting it using super one click. It is running stock GB, as shown in my sig below. I have used TIBU to remove most of the bloat, and have installed my favorite apps. However, I have not found a thread on how to update recovery to CWM. I am not interested in flashing a new ROM at present, I just want to replace the stock recovery with one that will allow me to make Nandroids.
Thanks for any help.
I'm pretty sure that you would have to flash a kernel with cwm support

Look at the guide in my signature and go to the part about SGS Kernel Flasher. You need a custom kernel for CWM.
Worked like a charm. Backing up as we speak. Thanks!
Glad you got it. Add [SOLVED] to the thread title if u will. Thanks.
how can i install clock work mod recovery on a SGS4G if odin wont recognize it when its in download mode running 2.3.6 and rooted just need to flash a custom rom to fix two problems can anyone help?
Ask questions in the Q/A forum. This forum is for developing, and unless you've made a ROM or kernel named "how do i install clock work mod recovery" it doesn't belong here.
Wrong place to post this question. Go to the Help and Trouble Shooting section.

Use Heimdall in the above links instead. It can install a driver for your computer if you don't have one correctly installed.

It's been successfully rooted with POOT.
It has also been rooted via CWM by Area51 Here for CWM and then Here for Root! I did find some ROM development going on at Area51 as well here. Area51's CWM does not appear to play nice with any phone rooted with Poot however so it's best to install CWM from Area51 first and then use their root method.

The root method used at A51 is out-of-date, and can't be updated. Therefore, you'll continuously receive an update notification and won't be able to stop it.

Not True! All you have to do is just not install the update when it boots you into CWM. This will be fixed when they complete the ROM they're working on. I don't get update reminders after accepting the first one and just not installing it once in recovery mode at the install screen!
My roomate just got this phone, gonna root it for her. Thanks for posting methods.

You might want to wait for Area51 to complete their first ROM for the phone. Currently it has an annoying update that keeps trying to install over the rooted stock OS that will break root if you install it. Of course you can just keep clicking on accept and then selecting NO when you get to the install update screen in CWM like I do, but it's an annoyance.

Galaxy Centura 4.X
Is there any roms for the Samsung Galaxy Centura on StraightTalk that is Android version 4.1, 4.2 or above?
Not yet. Something that Samsung broke in the kernel is preventing the ROMs from booting up.

Cool just rooted one of these and uh, any recommendations on a root required app to use the phone as a wifi hotspot free of charge?
I just installed cwm with Odin and I did a backup. I downloaded all the files for root and place it in clockwork backup folder. When I go to cwm and restore backup folder I get a md5 mismatch error. Is their anyway to fix that?

Did you rename the backup? If it has spaces, it will cause that error.

What's the best method of returning this phone back stock is there a flashable firmware or tar file?
Does anyone know what has become of Androidarea51 ??
I've been trying to access that site for some time and it always fails to load.
It has been mentioned in this thread as a source for rooting this model of phone and I've just been given one & would like to root it...
Thanks.
Did anyone get the ROM to boot up? I've been trying but all I get is a black screen
