I couldn't live without the One X's _________ - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

I get frustrated with HTC and AT&T and think about jumping ship, but now that I've had my 1X for a while, I just couldn't bear to give up the camera and associated app (mainly burst mode & the ability to take hi res stills while recording HD video).
I just wondered how many people felt the same and/or what that special feature is for you? Do you wish it was available on other phones? Or from other OEMs?
Billy

1. I hope you are not serious when you say you couldnt live without a phone
2. There is a Q&A section, maybe you need to address your questions there
3. See a doctor if #1 is true

I Love
i absolutely love my One X, I don't think I could ever go without it. I love the camera and the speed. It was a little frustrating to deal with multitasking for a while but they sent out the update and fixed quickly. This is the kind of phone that looks like it had a lot of thought that went into designing it.
There were many times where I expected people to start jumping ship when it came to HTC, although I think they have redeemed themselves. HTC was releasing too many cheap phones too frequently. They needed to stop and focus on one phone or one series. This could not have payed of better for them.

For me the biggest thing is phone quality, it doesn't feel cheap and looks SO VERY SEXYYYYYY!

HTC was known for supporting their customers and thriving for the development that was made outside their walls. They their customer support and open source support along side their amazing devices set them apart from the other manufacturers. They made it clear publicly that they do, and will support us. With no more of a warning than a punch in the back of our heads they took that away. They sent out the hox and the Evo lte with a MUCH increased security. The devs went to work and accomplished a lot of feats to open the devices up. Now, this part of the journey was frustrating enough, and many attempts were made to reach out and let htc know how we felt as customers and nobody got anything more than 1pre written response. Written so any joe could open up and see their customers voice and simply hit a auto reply without even finishing reading what the customer had to say.
To put the icing on the cake, to really make that sucker punch they gave us into baseball bat they did what i believe was their lowest of all time. They took us, the same developer community they supported, applauded and learned from and used our work to cutoff all the exploits that were there. Unlocking exploits, rooting exploits they killed them. They even implemented new securities on developments that were being explored. EXPLORED. So, that is my opinion and my feelings on the issue. Thats why i could care less to see them file bankruptcy and disappear. They obviously could care less about me. Like i said its MHO i dont care who agrees or disagrees. Ive moved on to other manufacturers but remain active in trying to help this community.

Well said.

I feel the same way about a lot of companies. Up until Apple's style of suing people I stayed pretty neutral in the android vs Apple thing. Now I'm looking to sell my Apple computer and replace every product even linked to them. Now that HTC is following a certain ****y path with security and developer support I'm thinking about doing something similar. I choose with my money and if HTC won't give me the experience I want them I'll let someone else take up the job. Maybe that new rumored nexus?

Exactly. I think the roles have reversed in that department at this point. Verizon has invested too much into Android (especially with the DROID line) to let something like that which only affects the hacking community lower their product line. It would be product suicide for them based on their current standings.

HTC doesn't want to get the same bad rep Moto does for their locked phones (before you jumpt to conclusions that no one cares except a small minority on this, hear me out because it's far more than that). I'm not sure how it is for everyone else, but if you happen to be known among your friends and family as being the "computer expert," they tend to ask you what you would want to buy yourself. The reaction of modders against HTC is probably something they don't want just for the bad PR and referrals they will get. I stopped telling friends/family to buy Moto when they screwed everyone and HTC when they started to lock things down (except for ones not locked).
Word of mouth is what made Android popular to begin with and is far more powerful than any PR campaign (just look at Apple fans and how much they preach their iCrap and look how it works). HTC with from an unknown company themselves to a huge phone maker with more or less with google's blessing (and google as far as I know wants you to mod your phone).
Moto wasn't exactly doing awesome before android, but it was a far larger company than HTC was. HTC unlike moto doesnt have a history of really being arrogant, not listening to customers and assuming that if they keep releasing the same thing a billion times with small changes, it will still sell like it did before (the razr). Moto shoots themselves in the foot constantly and will continue to do so. They're lucky they built the first droid or they would most likely be dead in the water as a company.
A locked down android phone isn't much better than an iphone and sort of defeats the purpose of android to begin with. "Rooting your android" isn't exactly a common thing yet for people to know about, but looking at some of the clueless people (i mean that in the best of ways, not so much of an insult) that wander into xda lately, it's obviously becoming more so than ever before. If you tell someone you "rooted" your android phone they might not know what you mean, but if you use the very bad analogy that you "jailbroke it," far more people will get what you mean even if it isn't exactly correct. Point is, rooting will finally catch on in the mainstream world soon enough (I mean it took like a year for the local news here to "discover" angry birds, lol [they just did a news broadcast on it the other way sadly]).
Although no one can exactly say for sure, but I am sure HTC employees hang around on xda (at least some developers) and review third party development of their phones for future things to incorporate or remove from them (as well as free beta testing of obviously broken leaks). It would be dumb for them not to do so when it's all right there for them. If they lock it down, they lose something they would have to go and pay for themselves and might also be biased data. Anyways you cant assume that "leaks" are all just about altruism. The fact something gets leaked without any recourse would imply it was leaked most likely with approval. Same thing with the so called "insiders" that post on blogs about things that would look questionable to talk about from a corporate standpoint; It's sort of like a form of "astroturfing" only in a better way than what most companies do (since it's actually useful).
Moto could take a few cues from outside development, since obviously they have no clue how to develop a framework on their phones (looking at moto blur). Not saying Sense is perfect, but it could be far far worse.
hip hip hooray

This has nothing to do with PC versus Mac, this has to do with locked vs unlocked hardware. i will be boycotting Motorola in the future, this is my first Moto smartphone and the experience has been less than desirable. It's another case of great hardware ruined by being severely limited/crippled by the manufacturer. Samsung, LG, or HTC for me in the future.

Good luck in IOS jail
I sincerely wish you luck with an idevice. I was talked into trying the IP4, and knowing that I could easily sell it for enough dough to pickup some android goodness, I gave it a good, honest try. I fought for almost 6mos trying to make it fit. There were things that were nice, like the *screen*, battery life, speed, and camera.
I even jailbroke that puppy and actually had it part-way there. Unfortunately, the IOS ecosystem is so restrictive (though admittedly slowly getting better) that I wound up bashing my head against stupid, arbitrary limitations. At first, the little annoyances seem minor and tolerable. afterall, this is a pretty solid device, right? so what if you can't quite do x, y, or z. There are 'workarounds' and such, but then you realize that hitting the same little issues every single day starts to grate on you, and many of the 'workarounds' are half-ass (backgrounding apps just kills battery life, for eg.).
While IOS is well optimized for the hardware, and they really get all the speed they can out of it, the GUI also employs tricks to make it *feel* fast (smooth is a better word). Those smooth transitions are so smooth because they are slow, and the GUI will pre-load elements even before they are ready for touch input. Once I got to know IOS, I found I was tapping on freshly loaded GUI 'buttons' that ignored my input for a second or so. lame. Also, the 'polished' feel of IOS apps is almost purely illusory, as they crash frequently when 'unfrozen' (they don't get to run in the background). IOS just makes the crash look really pretty as the app disappears for just a moment and then restarts itself never telling you what actually happened. Android is just being honest when it reports an app crashed.
If yer on a tiered data plan, get ready for the hate. despite all the bull**** claims, IOS uses *far* more data than android. I could rarely stay under 200MB/mo on my IP4 despite having no widgets and only doing email and a bit of web browsing. I rarely go over 80MB in a month now that I'm on the atrix2.
A friend of mine who switched from the IP3G to the SGSII is thankful he didn't get the IP4s. He reports that his wife's IP4s seems sluggish and apps crash alot.
The iDevices can be alluring, and it might be worth trying, but just make sure you have a back-out plan. You may not even fully realize the pit yer in until months later.

Slide v One S?

Just this morning been offered an HTC One S to replace my 4g slide from TMobile. Because I could then put my slide on Craigslist I would actually make money but my question is, would it be worth it?
From a few Google searches I've done it seems there's not a lot between the two, plus I absolutely love my slide. I also used the 'search' feature here and didn't find anything.
Any advice greatly appreciated.

Dude, go to the trade thread. Your questions make zero sense to me.
First off, there is a HUGE DIFFERENCE between the two. The One S has the S4 processor which it way more advanced (and battery efficient) than the S3 in our MT4GS. Secondly, like someone else said, you can't compare a qwerty to a slim model. And finally, it's obvious that tmobile was offering you a trade because of a defect or something so you wouldn't keep both lol!
Why do people 'lol' when making statements that are factually incorrect?
I own the mytouch 4g slide, paid for and have no clue as to why you would assume it's an exchange.
Thanks for the other information.

Hahahahha! that is very true about the lol part It's really become similar to "like" and is overused and seemingly out of context even by myself sometimes. I figured you were referring to an exchange when you stated they offered you one. Sometimes they offer you a different model on an exchange so I thought that was this case for some reason. But yeah, read about the new S4 processor. It's a real beast and is even comparable to the new quadcores
Thanks, I appreciate the advice.
And to be fair, by using the term 'replace' in the original post I can see how the misunderstanding arose.
I had a mytouch 3g from TMob, gave it to my wife and bought a slide privately and have now been offered an HTC One S, thus giving me the ability to sell one or other when the One S arrives.
Just wanted to know if anyone had experience of both, that's all, but I do appreciate your time.
And just to clarify the reason for asking, I absolutely love the performance of the slide and the only two complaints I have would be the weight and the fact I've never used the keyboard as intended (my fault/choice obviously)
So in knowing I can do without the keyboard it became a tougher choice in as much as, I really do love the slide .
I'd say my main uses of the phone are streaming radio and video whilst using a proxy, (overseas region protected content) and for that the slide has been brilliant but if I thought I could get more performance for those tasks I'd swap over.

The one S is slick, my boy has one and he let me play with it for a few. First thing I did was benchmark the S4, close to 7k he isn't rooted or anything so I thought that was impressive. He's running ICS which has some pretty nice features. Plus the imaging chip the one series has allows a still photo to be taken while recording a video which I was excited to see. I would ditch my doubleshot in a heartbeat for a one series phone.

That's what I'm talking about, losangeles100 With benchmarks that freaking high (almost twice what ours run at) plus the fact that you don't use the qwerty keyboard... I'd go for it too. Although, I'm not sure that I could handle lack of removable battery or sd card The battery life is supposed to be good on the S4 so you might be good to go. Hell, it's gotten be alot better than our battery hungry S3
I agree with the point about the battery, like you say, can't be any worse than what we have. As for non-removable storage, it's obviously a tried and tested method on other phones/manufacturers and I can only think the research has been done as regards performance. I'd be a lot more nervous if this was the first of its kind.
I'm going to test it and I will report back with a personal view as to the pros/cons if any.

How to Defeat Apple... The Innovative Way

Pissing Me Off
I've been lurking the HTC Facebook & I'm just tired of their bull****. Cancel of Desire HD ICS has put a big X on them by many customers. Don't even get me start on the way they've let us deal with these bugs of 3 dot menu, auto focus issues, yellow tint, overheat, & MULTITASKING. HTC is pissing me off with this crap. I've simply devised a plan to solve all our issues, which I will get to later.
Apple
We all know Apple poses a serious threat with fanboy and stolen ideas... We know this, but Apple also supports their crap. I hate Apple to the core, but they care about their phones. They all get upgrades... Unlike our ****ty upgrade policy & it doesn't depend on carriers. Apple isn't at the mercy of the carrier bull**** like we are. That's the main 2 problems with Android... The carrier bottle neck & timely upgrades. Still, Apple blows with a dull ass ui.
HTC, Motorola & Samsung
We all know the strengths & weaknesses of the big 3 here. HTC has excellent build quality & Sense is beast (to me), but it's a resource hog & HTC is not too damn dev friendly. Let's not forget hboot1.5 & the thousands of different phone models they release every year. Samsung has cheap plastic devices, horrible radios, a ****ty UI, BUT always have top of the line specs. You can't say I'm wrong there. Samsung has always somehow trumped HTC & Motorola with specs. Motorola is just garbage to me, but the have the best radios hands down. They also have the beast battery inside the Razor Maxx.
Defeating Apple... With The Nexus
It's the only way at this point... But we need the help of the big 3. Pure Android, with timely updates, is the sure fire way to stop them. Google can't build the phone tho... So this is what needs to be done. We need to take all the strengths from the big 3 & use them against apple. The build quality from HTC, the specs from Samsung & the radios & Razor Maxx battery from Motorola is all we need. Google can focus on software & firmware updates alone. We will also need Google to prevent carrier bottle neck & the addition of bloat. Google should also NOT let them brand the Nexus. Apple isn't bloated or branded with sprint bull****, the nexus shouldn't be either.
Promotion
Plain & simple Apple wins here, but we can stop them. Google needs to promote like hell. Apple lies in advertising, but we can beat them with facts. The Nexus needs to be promoted so much, even when you sleep you see advertising.
Dev Community
No doubt this phone should come s-off with no bootloader locked. You should be able to flash everything from the phone itself except the stock recovery the phone comes with. You should only use adb 1 time to push a custom recovery. If this isn't possible... Take the HTC approach, but tweak it. Kernel source, drivers, etc will all be available DAY 1.
The Name
Well, the name of the next Nexus should be decided upon by me. Since my game plan here will destroy apple... I think it's more than fair. I've come up with 5 names... No other way:
1. Kao Nexus
2. Transcendent Nexus
3. The Nexus
4. Nexus 5
5. Nexus X (for extermination of Apple)
This is what should be done. Any thoughts?

How does any of that solve any of the perceived issues that you listed?
So when do I get the free sword & armor?
Injunction nullification & contract shredding spells wanted. Can't have the revolution tripping over that nonsense.

I can 'positively say', this thread should just be locked before hell breaks loose.
*has nothing nice to say, so says nothing*
This is why the site is going to poop. None of my ideas can stop apple? The Galaxy Nexus isn't advertised like it's supposed to? If we take all the positives from HTC, Sammy, & Motorola... We can take them down. With a super dev friendly Nexus & source ready to go day 1... How can the next Nexus device not beast apple?

Your ideas are talks of getting rival companies to just put their differences and own business strategies aside to *win*. Seems to resonate of 'fixing' the Middle East...
And your question of, "how can the next nexus device not beast Apple?"
Answer: Because regardless of what you may think would be best, cell phone consumers are going to buy their next phone due to personal preference. Whether that preference is familiarity (as apple holds the title for: unchanging ui). Or cutting edge hardware, or software.
No company can put out a device that flat out everyone is going to love. And putting out a 'perfect device' would boost their short term incomes, but hamper long term due to, "why buy another device if this one is perfect?" That's just bad business strategy.

You think the site is going to hell becasue nobody agrees with your unrealistic ideas to take down apple? Nothing will "take down" apple. Do you think that when android sells more devices than apple, apple will just dissapear? Because they already are, and last time I checked, apple was still around.
Well, still, imagine what the next Nexus will be if HTC, MOTOROLA, & Sammy combined all 3 of their strong points together in one device powered by pure Google Android. That would be amazing. Excellent build quality, powerful specs, awesome radios & Razor Maxx battery is a dream device. Not to mention the unmentioned things like Gorilla Glass 2, Super LCD2, image sense chip of course (thanks HTC), 4.7 inch screen... Super dev friendly with source & drivers day 1!!!!! Jizz on screen bro... Jizz on screen if this came to be.
Naming it Kao Nexus is just a bonus & show of gratitude to me.

And no one would use it, because 97% of the users out there don't WANT 'pure google', they want Sense, or Touchwiz (I refuse to believe anyone actually WANTS 'Blur').
What's perfect to YOU, isn't perfect to most of the consumers who could give a damn what android or apple is doing as long as the device meets their personal criteria.
I think you overestimate the numbers of people that care about unlocking and customizing their phones. It's really close to 2-3%. Most people just want to turn the phone on and have it work.

I like how they ran wily nilly into battle. It was all about the shield wall or you lost.
And the battle of Stirling was actually the battle of Stirling bridge. Braveheart was f all inaccurate.
And the princess he had an affair with was 6 years old at the time.
What can i say im a history nerd

[Q] Is it worth it? [SOLVED]

Okay guys,
I'm a hobbyist developer, I often pseudo-kang my own roms by basically cherry picking features from various roms and slap them all together into one big frankenrom for whatever device I'm using.
I've decided that next phone I get, I'm just going to develop a real rom myself. The problem is, I can't decide what my next phone will be! I have two options, and only two as I have VERY limited funds and will be renewing my contract:
AT&T HTC One X
LG Optimus G
Both are less than a dollar. The one X has lesser specs, but I'm familiar with HTC devices and their quirks (been cooking up roms since my old wizard and Kaiser days) but the optimus g is from a manufacturer I'm totally unfamiliar with when it comes to developing yet has some amazing specs for a whopping PENNY at Wal-Mart.
How active do you guys (honestly) see the developing community surrounding the One X lasting? Is it worth it to jump into a device that is already end of life? Should I just hang on until I have an extra $99 and get the HTC One?
I'm coming here and asking you guys this because you're the ones that can tell me how much longer you HONESTLY see yourselves using this device. I'm using the htc holiday now, and that really bit me in the arse, dying out in less than a year, AND being a nightmare to develop for. If it happens again with the One X, I'm swearing of HTC forever.

Me, personally, I'd wait and pay the $99 for the M7. I'm not saying this is a bad phone by any stretch of the imagination, it's a freakin awesome phone, I absolutely love my Evita.
But, considering the speed at which tech becomes outdated, and how long you want to keep a device for, it just seems to make more sense to hold out for the M7.

I agree. The latest tech for quad core phones is extremely promising, like the one and the gs4. Seems like their getting great battery/performance ratio. I'd wait it out a bit.

Thanks a lot guys. That really helped me make my decision, along with seeing the crazy TWENTY HOURS of talk time a friend managed on a stock HTC One. My Holiday gets MAYBE 5 hours of screen on time, and that's with LTE turned off, intellidemand governor, and max clock set to 1024MHz. That was another big bite on the arse with getting one of the first LTE phones on AT&T

Oooh. Those sneaky bastards. It's only $50 if you're starting *new* service. Upgrades are $99.
Aw shucks, what a letdown.
What would you lose if you were to start a new contract? I know up here in Canada, it's government law to have carriers able to port your number from one service to another, even if it's to the same carrier after a cancellation of their service. Other than the phone number, I don't know what else you'd lose besides loyalty. Would it be worth it to look into?
Starting fresh is just an idea to explore, it might help, probably not.
Edit: The reason I say start new (if at all possible) is because I believe the HTC Holiday is >2 years old, rendering your contract nearly terminated and up for renewal. Just to clarify.
