battery never charges beyond and poor screen on time on battery life - Transformer TF300T Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
For awhile now, I've noticed that my battery never charges above 92%. Additionally, my battery goes down 10% every 20 minutes while using the tablet, which means the total screen on time on battery is around 3.5 hours.
I've done a factory reset and no improvement. I'm on balanced profile and auto brightness too.
I'm assuming my tablet or battery is defective, but before calling Asus I wanted to see if others were having this problem.
Thanks.

i'm not sure if you have a problem, but maybe auto brightness is the cause, if you usually use it in a light place, then it will adjust the brightness to higher, likewise if you use it in a dark place, it will adjust the brightness to lower.
for me i don't use auto brightness, usually i set at 10% - 40% (depends on what i do) and i usually can only get about 5-6 hours screen on time which i think is not normal, but everyone in transformer forum is saying it's normal so...
EDIT: as for the charging problem (never charge above 92%), i'm not sure, if you wait about a hour do you still see 92%?

Well my auto-brightness makes it REALLY dim, almost unusable. In the past I've tried setting it to 25% brightness and the battery life still sucks. Plus the whole "not charging beyond 92%" thing.

Well if I put mine on 1.5 ghz performance mode on full brightness watching 720p videos on MXplayer it lasts 6 almoat 7 hours.
If I put it on around 20% brightness power saving mode with ondemand scaling, I get around 11 hours

Wow, I would love to get that. I suspect yours doesn't stop charging at 92% either?

that's awesome, i never got more than 6 hours 15 minutes, but i never did a test either. so i guess i'll do a video test to see, but i'm not sure if i can look at the screen and watch video for 6 - 11 hours lol
@OP: your battery seems bad i think, at least my tablet which i think has a defective battery still has better battery life than yours. but maybe an app is behaving badly (like it always run in the background and check for new things), and do you have wifi bluetooth gps on all the time?

I thought maybe a bad app but I did a factory reset and didn't load any apps and problem is still there.

I'm only getting a battery charge of 57% or so on my tf300. The keyboard will charge fully, but the tablet wont charge beyond that very annoying, it was fine before last weekend.

I RMAd my tablet and Asus replaced the battery. It now changes to 100% and I get 8 or more ours of screen on time. I'm a little concerned the battery failed so fast but at least they fixed it.

8 or more hours is normal, now don't worry and enjoy
i'm getting about 5 hours with various uses, this is my 3rd tf300, the first 2 ones had the same battery life 5 hours with various uses too, i guess it's normal.
but maybe i need to do a battery test and compare with other people to see if it's really normal. anyway even if it's not normal i'm not repairing or exchanging it, it's working great (the first 2 ones did not work ok, i don't want to return 1 more time)

New Idea for helping save battery...

I have a friend that sent me this message today, which sounds like a great idea:
I've been messing with setcpu and trying out some underclocking profiles. Underclocking while the screen is off as well as reducing the CPU power has gotten me 75% battery left after 8 hours. This is with constant emails but no wireless, bluetooth, or gps. This is better than I was getting under windows mobile.
Using a complete black background as your desktop background screen also helps with battery life. The black areas dont use battery power.
If you install one of the cpu meters, it will show that there is automatic underclocking... mine says it has been running at 100MHz for 76% of the time (1 day uptime).
Android System Info will tell you this.
Now, I'm not sure if this is the same as what you are doing though.
You know, I believe that is correct. I don't know if he is getting any advantage or not. I'll forward the info to him and see what he thinks.

That only helps if you spend a significant amount of time on your phone's home screen or hit buttons a lot when the phone is in your pocket.
I've found that the best way to save battery life is to use manual brightness. Auto brightness is just too bright. In fact some newer firmware hidden on samsung's site does make auto brightness a bit dimmer.
Using manual brightness I get about one hour and fifteen minutes of screen time per 10% of battery. I get about an hour per ten percent at work, where it's brighter. I get about half that with auto-brightness.
I think one good way to test which i am going to do to tonight is charge your phone and right before you go to bed unplug it and let it run through the night and in the morning see what sucks the most battery. i'm going to assume it should be "phone idle" but if its cell standby then something is sucking data, someone correct me if im wrong .
Just flash to jh2 out jh3. I'm on 16 hours and have 50% left

I know my 8525 (a precursor to the tilt) had excellent reception. It was far better than average. This captivate is not as good. In my experience the captivate has average reception. I've had much worse.
Well, my buddy that told me about the topic I used to start this thread just stopped by.
He is playing with an Android 2.2 ROM that has been installed on his HTC HD2, which also is undervolted a bit. And of course, tweaking with SETCPU>
He said he is getting email and messages etc as normal; has full CPU and good power when using it (BTW...the Quadrant readings on his phone is coming in at over 1700). His phone has been up for 24 hours, 15 minutes when he stopped in, and he had 58% battery left. Before he started tweaking (and I think before the undervolted ROM), he was getting 11-12 hours on a charge.
Sounds pretty good to me.

[Q] Actual battery life

Hi guys, any thoughts regarding Battery life? I get roughly 8 hrs, not the 9.5-10hrs advertised/reported in the forums. Of course, this is with very high use, screen on 7.5hrs, wifi on the whole time, plex on for an hour or so, mobo video playing for an hour, and web browsing for a couple of hours, and some games too. Is this standard? Dock battery is ok, gives around 5 hrs. Any ideas on improving battery? Screen stays at 60% brightness all the time. Plus i have cnn, facebook, youtube, pulse, cnbc and plume widgets on. And active mail sync in the background.

The 9.5h time is stated for constant 720p playback so I don't think your usage is that much higher. I never stopped the time for my ASUS but I am happy with it and I guess that's what matters most.
I use SetCPU (requires root) to set the clock speed to 216MHz when idle. That seems to improve battery life.
I am not getting anywhere close to 9 hours. At first I thought it's the apps I have been running in the background or the brightness, but it's the same after I adjust it. I get about 6 hours.
Dude....6 hours is pretty low.anyways, i havent rooted it yet because of the impending otas.will do it as soon as a gr8 custom rom comes out.

Yes but i do video streaming over wifi. Also my wifi is on the whole time. And as far as i know, wifi takes more battery than video decoding.

I bet you can achieve the same if you duplicate their testing scenario.
As for improving battery life decreasing screen brightness can have a huge difference. The screen is often the #1 power usage item when I check on my phone. Also, reduce the checking frequency of any task that needs Wifi to get data.
It's been 15 days now since I had the TF and I can tell you based on my usage - I used up;
12% per hour - airplane mode, play games watch movies in auto brightness
1% per 2.5 hours standby.
So more or less 9 hours usage should be achievable.
I get about 18 hours of constant use with dock
I play with the thing all the time and I honestly haven't ended a day with my battery being below 50% yet.
Actually, out of fairly constant use, I haven't charged mine for, let's see... 2 days, 6 hours, and 52 minutes. Currently at 48% charge.
EDIT: Oh, and I don't have the dock, so it's not counting that.

It stays on auto. When it lasts me multiple days, I can't say I really worry about saving battery much.
For example, I unplugged it this morning at 7, played with it quite a bit today including playing Zenonia for a little over an hour and letting my friends play around, and my battery is currently at 75%.
Hi all. I just wanted to chime in on this thread here. Im a former owner of a xoom and can say that tablet was a beast when it came to battery life. I could have a full charge last for 2 weeks+ with very minimal use all consumed by idle standby. That was something to be said. The tf isn't as good; I can tell already, but I was surprised today! I charged it overnight and unplugged it around 11am. 98%, until I woke it up right now! Its at 97% with 13 hrs 39min. I probably had the screen on for only 5 minutes, but pretty good! One thing to point out that helped me a lot was to always have the tab in airplane mode. You can still have the wifi on and stay in airplane mode. That seemed to make a difference with the xoom. Just my $.02

I get 5ma constant use in sleep mode. By that logic, u would lose 1% in 13 hours on sleep mode. So yeah, idle use is pretty good. Decent tested flight mode yet though.but seriously, y doesn't battery use show the percent divisions like my phone? :O

Its doesn't seem that any of you guys are reading the manual when it comes to battery.
It says it clear in the manual. Why not follow what the book says, I guess some dont read.
"If you intend to use battery power, be sure to fully charge your battery pack before going on long trips.Remember that the power adapter charges the battery pack as long as its plugged into the computer and AC power source. Be aware thats it takes much longer the charge the battery pack and when the Eee Pad is in use"
Remember to fully charge the battery (8 hours or more) before the first use and whenever it is depleted to prolong battery life. The battery reaaches it's maximum capacity after a few full charging and discharging cycles.
"To prolong Battery life, charge the battery for up to 8 hours when using Eee Pad for the first time and whenever the battery power is fully depleted.

[Q] Wifi drains battery

Hi,
just got my brand new Transformer Infinity today and I'm pretty disappointed with battery life - without dock it lasts something between 5 and 6 hours while watching youtube and browsing web and that's not much more than my HTC One X. I found out that wifi drains more battery than the screen - 40%, which is pretty weird, because I'm sitting right next to the router and wifi signal is always stronger than -50dB. Have someone experienced something similar?
Battery stats are here: http :// db.tt/TSx6RHtB (please remove spaces, I'm new to the forums, so cannot post links yet).

Is there a way to check if it's miss calculated or if there is something wrong with wifi module? And if it's actually miss calculated, shouldn't Asus repair it to make sure it is calculated correctly?
your argument might have more merit if you did a test with the wifi always on for a period of time vs without it on.

Since it might be miscalculated that could be wrong. Try watching a movie with another one of similar length without wifi. Afterwards compare battery percentage.
The battery needs a few charge and discharge cycles before you will start to see more meaningful reports. Don't go around and unnerve people by posting about battery life when you cannot possible say anything about that particular issue right now. Let it settle in for a bit. Please.

No, it's not. Li-Ion batteries have hysteresis as well, and the circuitry needs some start and end points to calibrate itself. I would agree that in some cases, like in my SGS2, specific hardware is used that doesn't need as much info as other pieces do, but generally speaking, you can't expect full potential out of the box.
Posted for reference. You can keep believing in your myth busting capabilities; I do not have the illusion I can convince you otherwise.

I agree. As an SGS2 owner myself, I know that when a battery is first used, or removed and put back in, it takes the device a few cycles to properly calibrate the battery gauge to have accurate results. I imagine this is the norm across other devices as well.

Never experienced anything like that since Li-ion batteries came into production.
Btw, just did video tests with wifi on and off, there is almost no difference in battery usage (about 15% per hour with brightness about 50% and IPS+ off), so it seems the battery readings are wrong.
Also I found out today, that auto brightness does not work - stays at maximum level if you go into dark room from bright place forever, exactly the same problem someone experiences with earlier Transformer models. Does auto brightness work OK on your Infinity?

My specimen does the same. Brightness doesn't go down when I turn off the light in the room, and it stays at the relatively high level it was at. So that currently makes three of us.
Using auto brightness on mine now. Seems fine. Regarding the battery usage, i have wlan at. 30% usage after alot of downloading.

Apart from the physical characteristics of the batteries discussed above, it is a problem I have encountered in numerous Android devices - the stock battery stats are miscalculated in so many ways, we won't even have enough time to name them all (I remember users panicking about the dialer "draining" the battery in numerous threads, while in most cases it was only the stat issue showing the dialer using most of the battery after making/answering an initial call).
For some different measures, try different apps from Google Play, like Badass battery for example: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gsamlabs.bbm

I think with normal usage, you can crank out a good amount of time. You just have to find that sweet spot with battery usage. I know I'm still working that out on my Bionic...but I've gotten that to last all day lately.

After one week of usage mine lasts about 9 hours while idling with 50% brightness, about 4-6 hours while watching youtube or browsing and about 3 hours while watching videos or gaming at 100% brightness and IPS+ on. Wifi battery drain

Hi. I'm having a problem. The wifi is draining my battery. My battery will only last about 4 hours of screen on time.
I've already check the power option of disabling wifi when the screen is off. Wifi drains at least 40%of the charge.
I've read other forums but nobody has an answer just yet. I really like this tablet, but it makes me mad just having 4 hours of battery.
Driver problem, an app misbehaving, hardware problem?
What can I do? What should I do? How many of you are having this issue?

Depending on your usage, it is indeed possible to drain battery 3-4 hours. I myself never had that situation but for those who played highly CPU/GPU intensive game along with WIFI had that issue. I usually had 5-6 hours on my routine use which to me seems was not much.
So couple things I believe you should look into.
1. How is your monitor brightness?
2. What applications are you running? e.g. are you downloading on background with playing some game foreground?
Those sort of basic things. To identify whether the WIFI is actual issue or not, one thing you can do is simply turn off the WIFI and do whatever you need for couple hours and see where you at in your battery. If you have 50% drained in couple hours without WIFI on, clearly WIFI is not the issue but if you suddenly get only 20% battery drain from WIFI off, it is indeed the WIFI.
If WIFI is indeed the issue and perhaps you can try Juice Defender but it will only save battery if you are not using WIFI all the time.
For detail, please refer to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1805636.
One last thing is obvious, but battery save mode rather than balance mode gave me extra couple hours without sacrifice in my foreground application performance; however, I did notice main screen page swiping or application launch animation weren't as smooth. Almost felt like back to my old Galaxy 10.1 tablet on Honeycomb.
There is actually a bug that makes your battery overview show the percentage of wifi on time as percentage of wifi battery consumption:
-> wifi on 80% of time > shows 80% of power consumption from wifi.
How long do you have your device ?
When i first got it I also thought that the battery time was bad but now ( i have had it for about a week) i get battery drain of 10% / hr while surfing and 14-18 %/hr while streaming video over wifi and 0,5-1% / hr while standby with wifi and sync on.
I have the brightness on manual contorl and when i watch video i change the performance to eco setting.
Hi, thank you for your responses..... This is an update of what is going on.
I am already on firmware. 26, but had the problems since fw. 22
Yesterday I did a factory reset to rule out some mysterious app. The battery issue continued under wifi.
Wifi was still draining between 40 and 50% of the battery. Completely drained in about 4 hours of browsing time in balanced mode and about 40% screen brightness.
I just did another test. I played 2 movies with the wifi off. After 4 hours of screen on time the battery fell to 66%. So the tablet have enough battery juice for 12 back to back movies. That's great, I can rule out the battery.
So far I can confirm that the battery is draining extremely fast with wifi and is not a big showing erroneous battery drain.
4 hours of browsing tine is a joke for a tablet...
Any other things you think I can try?
For how long have you had it? No matter what people say, the calibration algorithms for these kinds of batteries still need several cycles of charging and discharging before they can actually read out any battery level accurately. I easily go for far longer than that on my device -- not that that fact helps you out, I know -- but I thought battery life was worse in he beginning as well. I guess it just needs to settle down a bit. Give it a week.
EIDT: Oh, and....eeehmmmmm.... do not believe the standard Android battery tool. Get yer mitts on BetterBatteryStats and get a few cycles on it, check the readouts and then report back in.

Sorry about the whining, I know that you guys are helping me..
Battery life is really bad on this we need the motley kernel and some custom rooms soon !!!
I am running this tablet on performance and it is still very slow ccompared to my prime I hoped I can wait for the custom rooms and kernels before I sell this tablet i know i am very impatient
i have a tf700 too and have the same problem on wifi I love this tablet, i think we need to find a fix. Hope to hear from some of the smart people on this forum.
The reason for the low battery is this; Asus did not put a larger battery in Infinity compared to Prime.
Both devices have the exact same battery, but since Infinity runs at a higher clock speed and has a higher resolution screen, it drains the battery much much faster.
You can't really fix this with software. You can however lower the voltage with a custom kernel, making slightly improvement....but that'll also make the device unstable.
Just to let you guys know, i have assigned a fixed ip address for my Tf700 and the wifi drain seems to have decreased. I won't rely on the native android battery monitor (mine still says 85% battery drain by wifi). But i have noticed much less actually drain/hour when using wifi with a fixed ip address than not. YMMV.

Battery sucks?

Hello everyone,
just have my tab for aroud nearly 2 weeks and I cant shake off the feeling that my battery just suck! I think that in past 8 days my battery performance just went down.
Dead Space ( balance mode, auto brightness ) and it was around 4 hours? i think 3 and half but not sure.
Yesterday watching TV show ( battery life mode ) 8-9 percent gone after 45 minutes of playback and it was in SD quality. Wifi, sync, gps etc was all off.
Surelly Im goin to test more, but could someone write some values so I can compare with my?
And for the record Im currently running ASUS-HYDRO, but I noticed it when I was on stock.
sounds about right
not good

I have only had my tf300 for a few days but I am seeing about 6 hours for 99% to 30% while downloading apps and configuring the tablet. My
initial impression is that steaming video may be a heavy battery drain usage.
I used to think my battery life was bad, then i realised i constantly use it. Try turning your screen brightness down.

Maybe its the rom your running, Im running Asus hydro and im getting like 7 hours of screen on time with 3 days of total usage before i hit about 20%
I get about 11h for web surfing. (lowest setting for screen bright)
I usually spend 10% per hour on medium brightness.
Think people need to take into account one of the biggest battery drains is the screen. Will see very different results depending on screen brightness.
You might have a problem.
I watch 720p videos without wifi gps or anything on and the brightness is a little below half.
It lasts over 10 hours.
Just to prove it over a couple days - but found a Hard Rest (Hold Vol Down + Power Button until the tablet reboots) seems to have helped overnight.
Thanks guys, just got sick so i think ill have some time to do proper testing but 10 hours of hd playback? I think this will be impossible for me

I've had my tablet since the beginning of May and at best I get 6 hours of screen on time, at 0% brightness, on balanced mode. That's with mostly web browsing. However the last couple of weeks I'm lucky to get 4 hours and the tablet will not enter sleep mode. If i turn the screen off, it's kept awake about 100% of the time, and that's even after a factory reset and not installing anything on the device.
Is there something else I can do, or is it about time I get a hold of asus? I'm on a stock device, if that makes a difference.
6 hours nonstop? That's impressive if you get that much life off a charge. If you mean you get 6 hours off moderate use, that's an issue. I get 2 days or so off moderate use.
It probably because you close your apps (if you do it with a task manager), they just keep opening up in the background again, which takes some battery, also you are using the auto brightness which makes the screen too bright. If I were you I would just adjust the brightness myself (like I do) to the dimmest possible (so that you can still comfortably use the device) whenever using the tablet.
Here are my battery stats on moderate use with power saving mode
