Hard disc? - Asus Transformer TF700

I was wondering if the Infinity has an SSD or if the tablet has a microdrive?
Thought I read on one of the review sites in the specs that the TF700T has a micro drive.
Can't find the reference now.
The site or what I thought I saw was probably wrong.
I imagine the SSD is what's inside though.

It has an eMMC memory chip, most probably by Hynix, which according to some reviewers of the Prime might be the bottleneck.

[Q] Does the physical hard disk slow the TF down?

So I read that the TF is cheaper because it uses a hard disk instead of flash storage.
Does anyone notice the difference? Is it noisy?
LOL where did you read that bullcrap? I am 100% sure my TF101 has an SSD, operation is silent.
Wherever you read that... well... it's just wrong. It's flash based memory, no moving parts. The only sound (other than from the speakers) is the hum from the screen. But then all screens make a noise due to their frequencies. Some people will hear it, others won't.
How the heck is a disk drive supposed to fit in something that thin...
Voodoo magic and a huge crowbar.
Ok guys my bad! I just had to ask since I read it on some sites.
You can close this thread now
There is some manufacturer coming out with a tablet soon that has a spinning hard drive. I can't remember who it is, maybe Archos?

It is indeed flash based, as others have noted, but hard disks that thin have been readily available for years. Type-II CompactFlash microdrives are none other than a small hard drive, and first appeared in 1999. A Type-II CompactFlash card is only 5mm thick.
Yes, capacities have lagged way behind flash though, partly because Microdrives have fallen out of popularity as flash memory has gotten cheaper. Hence the largest Microdrive is only 8GB. They also have issues in terms of shock resistance and susceptibility to damage from air pressure changes, etc.
archos tablets will have hard drives.
Archos has had a tablet with a 250gb hard drive for long
http://www.archos.com/store/psearch.html?country=dk&lang=en&prod_id=archos70it
Archos like HDD's, cheaper and lots more storage. They have a shock mounting system thing, like HP drivegaurd, or Sony hdd protect (I think apple have one, but lets not mention them )
Anyway, thread closed as per OP req

this wasn't the place for that.
You can create a build with these components on Newegg and ask for feedback

thanks did not know where to ask.
PS, where ever you ask, be forewarned that no one will EVER agree with your build. In fact, every person you ask will suggest you switch out at least one component. One thing I have learned from building my own (and customer's) computers for the last 10+ years: as long as all the parts are technically compatible, and no individual part has a major problem (like a high failure rate, exceptionally low performance compared to similar parts, etc.), you can't go too wrong.

[Q] Cheap ICS Tablet... What's the catch?

Saw these on newegg the other day. Specs are impressive including an A10 arm CPU @1.5 ghz and Mali-400 GPU, with ICS out of the box... but for around $120? What's the catch here..? Yeah it looks quite a bit like a Dell Streak 7 at first glance - 480x800 res and only has 4GB for storage and only 512 ram... There's a lack of reviews on this thing and I'm considering getting one... But can anyone give me a reason to not buy one?

Any thoughts would be appreciated!
Nothing as far as I know. I remember reading about this tablet being the 1st ICS available. It was a GB tablet that didn't sell well, so they converted it to ICS.
BUT! I might be thinking of another similar tablet.
its kinda like a banana split, without the split
...did that say usb 3?
There's just so many that fit into that category Thanks for such quick input!
Another down side is no sd/micro sd slot built in. But with a usb port perhaps a game controller could be used? And did I see right that this thing has usb 3.0? Even if external sd/micro sd isn't available with usb3 transferring data should go pretty quick.
It has it's faults for sure but the hardware alone makes it worth the $120... All I would have to do is add a few games and snes9x ex and fpse... serious budget gaming tablet potential here.

Being a poor student and not having a laptop sucks, so maybe this one could comfort me all those harsh, horrifying hours of class where I have to write my notes on paper.
That's right, I have use paper! And a pen!
Does anyone have any experience with a tablet as a notetaking tool?
I get the feeling that it'd work out pretty nicely, but you never know.

New Transformers at Computex?

After just selling my Infinity on eBay, looks like ASUS just released a teaser for Computex for June 6 of new transformers coming our way. While they showed previous products, the design looks almost identical to our Infinities. What would you want in an upgrade?
For me they HAVE to fix the storage speeds after a couple of years being plagued by these issues. I would keep the 1080P display and just upgrade to a Tegra 4 which looks very promising in performance. The reference Tegra 4 used very high speed SSD from Sandisk and hopefully ASUS took noticed. They are putting an huge push towards tablets as it is their largest growing market, so throwing their weight behind a new transformer line makes since as it is truly a differentiator from the other high end tablets on the market.

I don't think anything about that preview screams Android, but it's totally possible. Computex seems like just as good of a place as any.
I don't think I see Asus jumping on the Tegra 4 bandwagon. This is purely speculation, but I think someone would have reported rumblings somewhere if that were the case. Asus made a big stink about having the first available Tegra 3 device. I think they would have at least thrown around a few renders and buzzwords if they were excited about sticking with Nvidia in the mobile space.
In the US the Snapdragon platform makes more sense. The whole industry (in the US, anyway) seems to be moving that way, and Qualcom has a proven track record with LTE integration. Remember that the data enabled Infinity was using a dual-core Snapdragon. I think it's more likely that we'd see something with the 800, especially since Qualcom is just gearing up to ship them now.
But if we're making wishlists here, I'd like to see something built on Intel. Silvermont sounds plain nasty. I know nothing is going to be announced in the near future, but I'd like to see what a true mobile x86 chip can do with Android. Particularly if they decide to be cool about bootloaders. I'm not holding my breath, but a guy can dream, can't he?
While I am excited about the prospect of a new Transformer tablet (though it may be something else), I would not expect to see any new products from ASUS in store in the near future. I am still waiting for the Transformer Book, which was probably announced nearly a year ago!
I woulnd't be exited about it either way, seeing as it is now so far above my budget I wouldn't be able to afford it anyway; plus my Infinity works perfectly well the way I want it to. (The only thing that bugs me is USB transfer speed, and it's equally low on my supposedly-not-bottlenecked SGS3. So it's MTP, not I/O And that's software-based.)
And between a new tablet and a new phone, the phone has priority for me. That low 1280x800 screenres and the (for my taste) smallish 4.8" is driving me nuts!
I suspect it'll be the W8 variant of the Infinity, actually. So far all the other W8 tabs are more on par with the TF300. (And the Vivo had a dualcore, so not even that.) W8 is now mature enough to require a high-end tablet in the market.

The teaser picture also shows a stylus coming out of the tablet.
A Tegra 4 or Snapdragon 800 Transformer tablet with the same screen as the Infinity and a stylus input similar to the Samsung Note family, with the I/O issues sorted out, would be a spectacular tablet for media consumption and productivity.

The Note 10.1 also has the ability to run 2 apps side by side. That is an awesome feature that I would like to see in future versions of Android.
I'm never buying another Asus tablet again if it isn't a Nexus. The Infinity is laggy and buggy constantly. I'm going to have to put CM 10.1 on it just to get it to work properly.
I hope they at least make it so that their tablets work properly before announcing more of them.
We've known the main issue for quite a while and the community has done a great job finding workarounds to the issues as best they could. The I/O issues after a few years of the Transformer series is inexcusable. I'm possible thinking of going with another high end tablet myself from another company, likely a Tegra 4 one (the games of the Tegra platform are just better than what anyone else is doing. Don't care on my phone, I do on my tablets).

Actually, judging from the size in the video in relation to the other tabs, it looks to be 8". Maybe an 8" Transformer? Would be a tad smallish, though.

Now if only it had a MicroSD slot.. And a Dock... And an extra battery... And a USB port... And an SDcard slot...
I'm sure the Nexus is faster. It's also completely useless for many of us.
I would love to see a new transformer on the market with the amount of problems I've seen on mine.
With that said I love the design on this one and lately my tablet has became a decent little powerhouse. It has a little lag on it,but that's not too big of a deal as I mainly see it on the home screen and 2d intensive games.
Sure I would love a nexus 10 but as discussed multiple times it also has its problems. As for me being a poorish college student with a beautiful tablet I can deal with the lag.
As for a new transformer I would love to see a new one. I mean they do have a fairly unique design with these things and when they work right they are beautifully quick. I had to install cm10.1 (the later builds) to get this speed but who on xda actually keeps their devices 100 percent stock?
Anyways enough with the rant. With the vivotabs coming out we need a new transformed. Hopefully with more ram, less bottlenecks, and possibly with a snapdragon instead. Tegras are nice but I see problems with them and non-tegra based games and stuff. I have yet to find a tablet design that beats the transformer line. The note is nice but I still like mine better and love the camera on it
Well looks like HP just stole some of the transformer thunder.

Seems promising to me and looks pretty cool (I like the look of the buttons). Hopefully ASUS comes strong with their offerings. HP has the chops to be a major player, they just had to get their executive issues fixed. They were the largest PC maker and can return to that and challenge Samsung, ASUS, and Sony in the tablet market.

lol you beat me to this. I was about to suggest the same thing (HP Slatebook X2). If HP does this right, they may have a real chance of building a successful product, but I suspect the camera might not as good as the tf700. My tf700 has taken some really decent photos and it can easily put my Sensation to shame (I find the camera on my tf700 even better than the Note 2, but obviously I am not the best person to judge). .
SNAPDRAGONNNNNNNN 800. I'd kill to have one in a tablet.

I used to be obsessed with the notion of a transformer mini, hoped the 370t/nexus 7 was going to be just that, with a full-sized dock and maybe a bezel to fill in the gaps made of front-facing speakers. I resigned myself to a 10" some time ago. Not sure if that happening now would make me happy or sad.

Personally I wouldn't touch an HP with a ten foot pole.
I used to repair computers for a living and the product I saw most in my shop was HP.
Lots of hardware issues.
Asus, IMHO, is one of the best for hardware stability, whether you are talking desktop, Laptop or tablet.
The only time I ever saw an Asus product was for software issues. The hardware lasts forever.
This is just my experience, though.

HP Slatebook x2 thoughts?

I took the risk and bought an HP Slatebook x2 today. I heard mixed optimism regarding its superiority over the other HP "offerings" as we might call them ... but it was hard for me to resist the Tegra 4 and bundled keyboard dock. As a grad student, I need a versatile input system, and I wasn't sure I wanted to wait for the next ASUS Transformer tablet to come out. Plus, I keep hearing bad things here about ASUS customer service and so on.
The Slatebook apparently ships with 4.2.2, which isn't too shabby, and it does have multiple SD expansion slots and a USB 2.0 port. So, not exactly up to snuff with the new Transformer rumors, but I couldn't really wait to go mobile because I do web design and I'm stuck on a desktop computer (hard to show off my work from my bedroom, y'know).
What I'm wondering now is, who's going to achieve root for me?
Also, what's the general consensus here on this particular device? All I've seen on these forums about it is a bunch of spam threads from a troll.
Thoughts?

I, or rather my wife, got this tablet a week ago and I am quite impressed. It is fast and nice, and I agree with the advertisement "100% notebook, 100% tablet". When docked, it feels like a true notebook with a very well designed keyboard and nice shortcut keys. And when used as a tablet, it works well too.
The multi user profiles on Android 4.2 works extremely well too.
For the root access: yes please! I want root too

My roommate bought one of these last week. I was a little dubious at first, but I agree with your assessment. "100% notebook/100% tablet" is pretty accurate.
I have a HP touchpad from the $99 sale from year(s?) ago. I could never get used to just the tablet feel, so I *really* like the docked feel of the slatebook.
Just my 2c. I think it's a feel thing. My girlfriend prefers tablets and just tablets.
I don't think my roommate cares about root... but I could probably convince him. Can never have too many testers
HP needs to bring the 32/64GB internal storage ones to the U.S.
Also with no physical store presence this tablet combo will go nowhere.
Does anyone want to give a little review on their thoughts on the unit?
Its been out in a few countries for a few weeks now and still not in depth review anywhere!

I had a TF201 and needed to replace it. I too could not wait for the new ASUS to come out, so I took the risk and bought a Slatebook x2. The complete lack of any discussion on this device, including reviews, is unbelievable. Do a Google search...if you exclude the repeat of the HP spec page...there is nothing.
I'm not a reviewer, but I like this device so far. Its very snappy, no lag, and its running a very close to stock Android 4.2.2 ROM. The only complaints I have are minor; no ability to direct connect to computer (runs off an AC adapter and a proprietary cable), and there is a little 'wobble' back and forth when docked (not tight like the Transformer). But everything else is nice, the screen, responsiveness, dock keys and looks. Its plastic, but who cares; so are about 100 million Samsung phones (I have a Note 2). I ran an AnTuTu benchmark, it was 29054 for what its worth; benchmarks don't mean too much to me.
I really hope Devs pick this up, find a root method and work on a CM load. I am concerned that the HP support to updates (4.3, KeyLimePie, etc) may be slow or non-existent. This wouldn't be a disaster, as the current load is fine, but I hate getting left behind.

I'm in Australia; they only had the 16GB model in the store I went to. This works about to be just under 12GB usable. However, I did put a 32GB micro SD card into the tablet and a 32GB SD card into the dock, so now I have on 70GB, which is more than enough for me.

I get the extra storage on the SD cards but the 11-12 GB left over for apps is not enough. The fact that they are actually making 32/64GB versions yet not offering them in the US makes absolutely no sense. Apps and games are only going to get bigger and bigger...I have a hp touchpad 16GB with ICS and have to really pick and choose what I install because of the small space..I'm looking for am upgrade in the internal storage department as well.

Interesting. I've usually managed well enough with low internal storage (my Razr Maxx only had 8GB dedicated to apps, and I never overloaded it). I like the fact that this tablet takes multiple SD cards for expansion--means odds are I'll never run out of space even with my 20+ GB music collection.
I'm glad to hear there are others who like what they've seen and are hoping for devs to pick it up. It means I made a good purchase. Looking forward to getting mine in the mail Friday!

My TF201 only had 16GB and it was fine for apps; I never ran out of room to install stuff. My issue was storage of my video library, which is fine on the 2 extension cards. I haven't read anywhere where >16GB units are available; maybe they are still coming.
Just tried a display set at the HP fair. It looks and feels sturdy except for the part that connects the tablet to the keyboard. Feel like its not connected properly and wobbles alot. I like the keyboard combo. For the price, its definitely cheap.
I am going to wait for more reviews before buying. Ppl kept saying tegra 4 sucks but isnt this the first tegra 4 tablet??
Android is fine as a phone OS but not as a laptop replacement.
Actually when you consider what most people use a laptop for android makes a very good laptop. With a level of power consumption that is wonderful. Of course haswell may end that particular argument. Or at least give it a black eye. At any rate for consumption and light computation devices I like android. Given its current power growth rate and popularity it could actually overtake and dominate the laptop industry unless Microsoft and Intel step up their game quickly. I tend to think Intel and Microsoft will drop the hammer next year though. Laptop sales are Declining at an alarming rate and windows RT hurt Microsoft's pocketbook a bit so they will innovate or die. I figure with their money and Affluence they will throw a mean right hook at the market sooner or later

Sorry, I read that 32GB was max, so I just went with 32GB. Haven't tried 64GB.

My TF201 only had 16GB and it was fine for apps; I never ran out of room to install stuff. My issue was storage of my video library, which is fine on the 2 extension cards. I haven't read anywhere where >16GB units are available; maybe they are still coming.
