Rooting VRALG1 firmware? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

My brand new unit has updated VRALG1 firmware and VRLG1 radio. Knowing the original "Root66" was built from VRAF2 firmware, I'm thinking I'm stuck - for the moment, right? I *could* downgrade the SYSTEM.IMG to the insecure Root66 (VRLF1), but still hardware version 10, just like the first ones shipped on "Day 1" in North America.
Any suggestions, folks? I've not found anything specific to rooting VRALG1 firmware, yet. Everything seems to be VRALF2-specific.

This method has worked on VRALG1. I have not tried it personally because I got my GS3 a while back, but others have had success according to the thread. If you're concerned about it, you could post there.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1792342

Just wondering what kind of stuff do you really lose in downgrading? I downgraded so I could get root and I haven't noticed anything different except for the fact that google search can now search contacts, apps, etc.

I've posted this in other forums recently..flashing modems/radios aren't suppose to change anything.... you could always Odin back to vralf2 then flash root66...
But if it were me... and I'm not responsible for bricking your device... of course... try noSympthy's newest OTA. If you check out the post it will tell you what to do for your firmware...

I bought a new phone back after a mandatory download the results of firmware phone to die

Thanks, folks! I eventually found the rooted ALG1 system.img and rooted late last night. The ONLY thing that I have found different is the "dumbing down" of searching to use only the Internet. You know Apple has a patent on that, and Sammy is keeping up a good front to comply.
There might be small changes elsewhere, but that's the only noticeable difference - so far. The phones they are shipping new now contain the updated radio (VRLG1) as well as the updated firmware.
The last one I got reconditioned had updated radio, but not firmware.
This one has slightly less exposed buttons for power & volume. Of the three phones I've returned since day 1, two had lost their power button and one had the volume rocker fall off. The other just started rebooting every 5-10 minutes, even in "Safe Mode". I haven't seen that posted, just hold the power button until the blue Samsung logo shows and then hold the volume down button, letting go of the power button after a few seconds until it boots. "Safe Mode" will show in the bottom left corner for a moment and only things pre-installed will run, programs and widgets you have added will be missing from the screens.
If it doesn't work then, next step is a factory reset...

This is the first I've heard of these problems, and all for one person. Perhaps you have incredibly strong fingers?

[Q] Is anyone finding it hard to access the bootloader in ICS on their 9020t?

Recently, as I was trying to update to the latest version of ICS 4.0.4, I found myself having to manually update to 4.0.3. I'm new to the Android platform and this 9020T Nexus S is my first Android phone, but I did manage to previously manually update to 2.3.6 from the 2.3.4 that was in the phone (apparently me and OTA updates are like oil and water). Unfortunately, I soon found out that I was working on erroneous information, and if I wanted to move to 4.0.4 while in 4.0.3, I would need to root the device, which is something that has been on my to-do list for a while now so I thought it'd be something I'd try.
Unfortunately, I'm finding that with ICS, I'm finding that it's a lot harder to access the bootloader than before. Holding the up volume key while also holding the power button while the phone is off tends to just tend on the phone, not get me to the bootloader interface. That's not to say that getting to the bootloader is impossible, but it seems that about 4 times out of 5 I just end up turning on the phone. I have put the thing inside a cheap case for protection, but I don't think that's the culprit, as the buttons are still clearly accessible. I imagine that the extra overhead from ICS 4.0.3 is perhaps enough that getting to the bootloader is rather difficult somehow now, so to that end, has anyone encountered this problem before? What did you do to try to sort this issue out?
What kind of case is it? I bought some argyle case from Amazon that made it damn near impossible to access the BL when I needed to. I bought a cheap silicone case and I can use the buttons no problem. I had the official OTA and flashed custom recovery and didn't have any problems rebooting into the bootloader. I would at least try to boot into the BL without the case just to rule it out. Also make sure you hold the volume button down until the screen for the bootloader actually loads up. I've let the button go a few seconds early and just booted up normally.
It's one of those cheap ebay hard cases that I bought online, can't post the link here thanks to anti-spam protections. I doubt that's the culprit though, I can reach the buttons on my Nexus S pretty easily since there are cutouts for the buttons. If all else fails, I'll try to see if I have an easier time with the case removed though.
Are you holding the volume key first? This has nothing to do with android, updates, rooting, etc. Maybe your power up key is biting the dust?
I think I'm mainly trying to press both at once, though I have tried pressing the volume first. Will try again to be sure.
As for the power button going, I doubt it, this is a relatively new device that hasn't given me any trouble power button wise before. Will have to try again specifically with that step though.
Ok, just tried this again. I didn't get anything conclusive out of it, though I did manage to get to the bootloader screen twice in a row. I think what's going on is that I'm not pressing enough of the (really rather cheap feeling) volume rocker to access the bootloader. Those two times stemmed from me pressing the entire upper half of the rocker rather than just the tip, so maybe it's not quite registering with the phone.
Unfortunately for this experiment, right after this experiment I checked for an update on a whim and it found a 4.0.4 OTA update . Been waiting to get that done for about a week now, so I'm glad even though my technical abilities have failed in my this case. Will continue to see if I can't get this thing rooted though!
you may try using fastboot via your computer...
Code:
fastboot reboot-bootloader
I'm actually trying to root this thing with one of those one-click root programs. I think I've got the bootloader unlocked but it's giving me a "device not found error", even though I've got the phone rebooted for a while now.
Kinda scared that I'll brick the thing if I disconnect the USB cable connected to it.

Weird problem with volume buttons

Hello my volume buttons seem to be defected (when I press either the up or down key, the volume on my sensation goes up, then a split second later goes down again so I have no way of lowering and raising the volume. This happens even when I take off the case and just press the buttons on the main unit.
If nobody has any suggestions I think it best I take it back to HTC to get fixed. My phone is rooted and using Revolution HD rom though so I'd like to return it to stock. My CID has been super CID'd to 11111111 however it originally used to be HTC__053 (Thailand).
I have attached a screenshot of my software information - could someone please recommend which stock rom to flash from here?:

I had the exact same problem a few weeks ago after driving through a rainshower; a reflash of my mod unfortunately didn't solve the problem, so I think you are experiencing the same hardware failure I had.
I managed to solve the problem, but for doing so I had to open my sensation and during the process destroy the "void"-label which sits on one of the screws. As I suspected a water damage because of the rain I was driving through before I didn't hesitate too long to take apart my sensation - my warranty was gone either way for me.
If you don't want to risk damaging your phone or losing your warranty you might want to keep your sensation the way it is now. I also kind of arranged myself with the situation before I decided to have a look at the inside of my sensation and actually repaired it succesfully.
If you press one of the volume buttons, the volume might not change, but the volume slider appears and you can change the volume by dragging the dot to your desired volume level. By drawing all the way to the left you have set up complete silence. If you want to turn to vibrate mode, you can press the volume-down button once. For me this worked quite well and I was able to set all volume-levels and modes without any problem.
But as having my sensation in a state it should not be quite bugged me I decided to have a go and try to solve the problem. I watched the tutorial videos available on youtube and saw that the volume-buttons are sitting on a separate board. I then took away the back plate and released the upper mainboard. After that I could pull out the volume-buttons-board, blew off the dust of it and reinserted it. After these steps both volume buttons worked as intended again. So if you think you have the required tools and are a bit handy in taking apart expensive stuff you might consider doing the same as I did.
Of course I want to emphasize that if you decide to take apart your sensation I will in no way take the responsibility for neither any damage that might happen during the process nor for the void warranty. I also can not guarantee, that what worked for me will work in your case.
If you only use the volume buttons for changing the volume (and not for rebooting in case your sensation freezed or starting in bootloader mode) you might consider learning how to live with the new "feature" of your sensation as I described in my third paragraph
Yes I've been using the method you described, tapping a volume button then dragging the volume on the screen. I'd quite like to get it fixed though and I'd rather not void the warranty - my device has been plagued with problems and I fully expect something else to go wrong with it in the future in which case I'd like to keep the warranty. Also the HTC service centre is literally round the corner from me so its not a big deal to get it repaired!
Could anyone please recommend which stock rom to flash my phone and return it to its original state so I can take it back to HTC?

I have started having this problem today. No water damage or anything, it just started happening. Tried re-flashing ROM etc but no fix as you said.
I really would like to try to get it working properly again and I'm sure I could do this as I used to be a wiring tech for an electronics company. I'm just hesitant in case I fluff it up.
I'm experiencing the same issue with my volume up button, I can 'click' the volume up command but it is not recognised. The funny/annoying thing is that this happened to me before. Like a month ago, I had this same issue for two weeks, but then it disappeared. My guess is there's some dust or oxidation preventing the click to be recognised.
Stupid volume up press is being recognised again. I've tried to think of anything I might have done to achieve this but cannot think of anything. At least it was not the removal of the battery. I tried that but that did not make a difference.

[Q] Possible boot problem?

Hi folks,
I suspect I'm having what some people around here appear to refer to as a Hboot problem. But this is my first Android phone, and I couldn't know any less about RUUs or booting or roms or anything like that. I'm posting a new thread because it seems like anyone who had a problem like mine had tried to, or wanted to know how to root their device. I didn't do that and am not trying to, but I've still got these problems.
I bought the phone "new", and it came in just today, from eBay, supposedly in a sealed box. Maybe that's part of the problem, I'm not sure. All I've done is: turn it on, install some apps, get in over my head with Apex launcher, and try to update Android.
I chose update from the menu, left my phone plugged in, and when I came back to it, nothing was on the screen. I pressed power, and it showed a screen similar to the first image (black screen, phone icon, green arrows in a circle). I assumed it was installing. I let it be and came back to the white screen with the numbers and barcodes. I panicked and chose "recovery" from the menu, and after a reboot it seemed to be back to normal.
However, just now, as I was attempting to reboot the phone due to not having any volume, I again got the white screen followed by the green arrows and finally the red warning icon.
Somehow or another, the phone resets itself and comes back on, but where is this coming from? Did I do something wrong? What does the screen mean, and did I get hosed by my seller? Thanks all

to get to the bootloader menu (the white one with the pink writing), you have to reboot and allow it to boot with the volume down button held. It looks like your volume rocker is getting stuck on down - given that you are losing volume and it keeps booting into the bootloader menu. If it is in a case, try removing it from the case and see if the issue persists.Otherwise, it is likely a hardware issue. so you should return it for a warranty repair/replacement (as you said you bought it new in a box).

Kitten - what do you think is the problem? The OP says they lost volume and they keep rebooting into the bootloader. The stuck volume rocker sounds like the easiest way to explain both issues. I might be wrong, but not given the symptoms listed in the OP. If more information is required to diagnose the issue, we can at least start by eliminating the obvious.

Thank you very, very much - I believe that's exactly the issue. I had no idea pressing the volume down button during a reboot would get you to that menu, but I am using the Trident Kraken case which apparently has an issue lining up with the volume down rocker on this particular phone.
I will try to reproduce the problem sans case to make sure, but this sounds absolutely right. Thanks for helping a complete newbie - I don't think I'd ever have put that together. I was very worried I'd been sold a bill of goods.

Stuck Power Button (cannot fix)

I've opened up the case as per the instructions on XDA and cleaned everything out. However, even when I try to boot without the case on, the power button seems to be stuck (maybe it's stuck even more internally and I can't get access to that).
I mean, I tried to boot the phone without fully reassembling the case (i.e. with the white button still showing) and it still boots when I put in the battery and the loops.
I don't know what else I can do. I no longer have warranty (I got my phone last year from Rogers). What should I do guys?

I'm in a similar spot. I've opened the case and cleaned it several times, the power button will stick occasionally. Managed to figure out that touching it lightly on the outside doesn't seem to make it stick as often, but it's still far from perfectly usable. Called the AML (Rogers store) location I purchased it from and like you I'm out of warranty - Rogers seems to have some kind of refurb trade in program if you're willing to entertain that. I've found some sites with repair parts for the Skyrocket and one that says they'll fix the power button. Really I'd like to upgrade but not sure if I can wait around until the X-Phone comes out, HTC One and S4 at least are closer. In the meantime making do with an iPhone 5 provided through work.
Here's the site I found on repair parts: http://www.cellphonerepairshop.com/samsung-skyrocket-sgh-i727/
And the one on power button repair: http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/samsung-galaxy-s-ii-skyrocket-power-button-repair/
Second one's domain / url looks kind of suspect.
It's funny it seems like there are a bunch of people / threads posting about worse than usual stuck power buttons that don't respond to cleaning so maybe that indicates the part just is not that durable and is reaching end of life. In contrast I have to say the industrial design / build quality of the iPhone 5 seems much higher grade.

When did you buy your skyrocket? I got mine around mid January and I can't believe that it's already nearly unusable. I am actually considering going for the Note 2 since I've always struggled with battery life on Skyrocket. I guess you're not going to end up doing the repairs (especially since there is no guarantee that the power button can be fixed)?

Nexus 5 restarting regardless of ROM

So I've tried factory wiping and installing a few different roms and no matter which one I go to I keep getting these random reboots. This is particularly troubling when I restore an older rom that I know I was not having this particular issue on.
It is making my phone pretty close to unusable since it will often go into an "Optimizing apps!" speil draining battery and taking an obnoxiously long time to reboot. Not sure what is up. Any suggestions?

Try with a clean flash (or the factory images) without user data/modifications and see if your RRs are still there.

The button will NOT seem to be stuck, even if it is, as the contact is made internally. My bro´s Nexus had this problem, and by the end it kept rebooting constantly because the button was making contact on its own. I fixed it by tapping vigorously at the area between the power button and the camera and that made it work.
A way to know if it is stuck could be to press the volume down key as soon as it restarts, if it goes into recovery, then there is no doubt the power button is stuck.
Don´t dismiss hardware problems, as many Nexus are affected by the power button issue and you already tried software solutions which didn´t work.
Hope you sort it out. Remember to use an app to avoid pressing the button so much, such as when waking the device. I recommend Gravity Screen, but there are many other options.

Holding down volume after one reset actually put me into recovery. Plus it's restarting at times in recovery now :/
I doubt it's under warranty since I got it in feb 2014 x.x

If you got it directly from Google, I'd try calling them up and asking for a replacement even if you are a few months off the warranty period, I have read some stories of them honoring warranties in order to get rid of stock. That'd be true even now that the new Nexus is supposedly releasing this year. Nothing wrong with trying, you might get a new, shiny phone.
That being said, don't worry, it's perfectly fixable. The part that gets stuck is not the button itself, but the part that goes into the motherboard, so don't bother fiddling with the black button. I managed to fix my brother's button by doing the following:
- Clean the area between the button and phone of debris or any dirt that could be causing it to be stuck. This is just to be on the safe side, as it is unlikely that it is the cause of the malfunction.
- Take the case off the phone if you haven't, and then put it upside down and tap vigorously with your fingers in the area between the camera and the power button. It might not work the first few times, but it eventually will release the part that is stuck.
- As soon as you can get it to turn on without rebooting itself, install Gravity Screen, or any other app that replaces the power button to wake up or turn the screen off. You are looking to use the button as few times as possible.
After doing that, his Nexus went for being unusable due to constant reboots to working fine. It's been almost 6 months since it happened so it is bound to work, just don't lose heart and patiently work at it. Tap a bit harder if it's not working. Let us know whether you managed to fix it.

Well someone mentioned maybe trying to clean it out somehow. I tried canned air and that didn't do anything so I formed a seal over the button using my mouth and then proceeded to exhale. It has yet to give me any trouble since then.
Had exactly the same issue, reboots over and over again, couldn't boot to bootloader without reboot...
What helped for me was something I read somewhere else, don't remember where, was knocking on the back cover between camera lense and the power switch, did it 4 days ago and it works since than..

You can take the back cover off, and if you are careful there is no sticker or seal that would tell google you have opened the device. It is difficult to pull all the way off, the vibration motor is attached to the case back and comes off with it so it would seem stuck. You just have to keep pulling.

Had exactly the same issue, reboots over and over again, couldn't boot to bootloader without reboot...
What helped for me was something I read somewhere else, don't remember where, was knocking on the back cover between camera lense and the power switch, did it 4 days ago and it works since than..

Pressing on the area between the camera and the on switch seems to help a lot of people it didn't seems ot have much of an effect for me. While my phone hasn't given me issues since shortly after I posted this thread I'm kinda worried I'm one drop away from the issue coming back

No way to avoid it sounding that way I fear.

Would this allow me to repair it?
Yeah but you'd need to unscrew a plastic cover that is inside the phone. Phillips head screws, jewelers screwdriver size. Depends on if its dirt or a broken switch though.

Sorry to disappoint everyone but this is a widespread problem that google is aware of fro some time now. It's not the power button but it's burried deep in the software and appreas to have popped up right after the Lollipop 5.1 up date. Check out all the posts on Google

While it apprears to be confined to the Nexus 5 I have had it happen with my nexus 4 just running stock L 5.1
I hope that casts some light on it
Weirdly enough, my power button works flawlessly on 5 and 5.1. Red 32gb from the google play store. I've opened the case multiple times and put Arctic silver knockoff heat compound in sloppily and without regard, no issues other than sprint screwing up their spark LTE rollout.

Sorry, I disagree. While some instances might be related to software, it has been proven that there is in fact a problem with the physical button getting stuck on Nexus 5 phones. You can check it online and will find lots of hits and even YouTube videos, most of them around the time before lollipop.
Best way to check whether it is software or hardware is to press the volume down key when your phone reboots by itself. If it takes you to the recovery, you can bet your cat that it is not lollipop's fault
So I'm suspecting that I have the wonky power button too but.....
I haven't been able to get it to go to recovery when pressing power down and I've defintely had a few restarts very recently.
More importantly, and something that I haven't seen anyone else post about; more often than not my N5 just shuts down. It's usually when I've doing something with the phone (today was flicking through my GPM library). I'll power it back on and it will boot cleanly and then (more often than not) power down again. Other times it will bootloop, but that's rare. It seems to me that if I let it boot up and then don't touch it for a while, it will stay up but I'm not sure that's consistent.
Anyone else seen or heard of the power button causing a powerdown instead of bootloop?

You will need to troubleshoot this the old-fashioned way. Have you installed any updates, apps, mods or anything recently?
Best case scenario would be that you flash a stock image without restoring apps, kernel or any mods. Run the phone for some time, couple of days or so, and be on the lookout for power downs or reboots. After that, you can try adding a few apps at a time and keep checking. If the phone reboots even with a clean factory image, then I'd have to say the hardware is faulty. Could be the power button, could be something else.
Try it out and let us know
