Isn't ICS availble for the US wifi only? - Samsung Galaxy Tab Plus

So I'm reading this everywhere and it says I have to use kies to upgrade the software. After reinstalling kies and formatting the tablet, kies is telline me that my device cannot receive software updates via kies. What gives?
How do I do this, this is very frustrating. Why can't Samsung just update their crap over the air like everyone else. Do I need to manually download the firmware from here and install it via the sd card?
Thanks.

tab plus wifi only US live oTA but!!!
its available. mine just came OTA when i turned it on this morning 6210 tab plus wifi only. but when i tried to install it it didn't work. its up on the sammobile site too as least but i don't have a pc (have a mac) to run that ridiculous kies app. go to galaxy tab plus general here on xda and there is a thread running about the new ics out (unrooted)

Same here. I've had a couple of firmware updates in the last week or so but I'm still at 3.2. Either its prepping my tablet for ICS or they were true 3.2 updates.
I chatted with a Samsung tech rep and she said that they were upgrading customers in batches and not everyone at once. Never heard that one before. I suppose if you wanted to keep the load on your servers happy, batching would make sense...
Anybody else hear about this?

Could it be Froyo?

I'm not sure about the rest of you Captivate owners, but mine has been undergoing a serious update for the past 2 hours. The first update I noticed was to Kies Mini from v10082.8.1 to v1.0.0.110104.1. I couldn't upgrade using Kies mini. Instead, Kies mini simply updated itself.
After seeing this, I performed a Phone update from my Captivate itself and it's still going at it.
Let us know if it is froyo

not to burst your bubble, but it probably isn't, for like the millionth time if official Froyo is released you will hear about it, stop being so optimistic whenever a kies update comes out. Trust me when this thing hits it'll hit hard, you won't not know lol

Many posts about Kies Mini update last week.
When Froyo does drop you'll see all kinds of articles on the regular internet sites.
Added: I'm still betting on St. Patrick's Day!
those #'s refer to KIES software versions.
It is simply and update for your Kies desktop software......nothing to do with firmware for your smartphone.
I'm still going for Christmas - although they had said by end of November... so we still have what? 2 more days at this point

Actually - the date for US has always been "by the end of the year" as reported by SamsungUSA twitter and facebook. It was the international Galaxy S (i9000) that was end of November. Many sites interpreted that to mean us to as our phones are also "Galaxy S".
My bad... false alarm. Nothing to see here. Move along.
I'm still puzzled why both Kies mini and my phone took ages to do whatever it did. Whateva! I want some Froyo!
Well all signs point to very soon. Samsung said we would get it by the end of the year, which means in less than a month. There was also a tip a couple weeks ago that Captivates running Froyo out of the box would go on sale on the first Sunday in December and the OTA would begin rolling out possibly the Monday after (12/6).
Can we all agree to post news about a Froyo update AFTER you actually get the OS on your phone?
It seems like every other day someone posts news that they have been notified/downloading an update.

THIS is the best advice anybody has given on the oft repeated subject - +2 for this person...
Speaking of the new version of Kies... Since mine upgraded, it won't let me check for updates while in debug mode. When I take it out of debug mode, my PC doesn't see my phone... Any ideas?

What os are you running? If it Win 7 x64, this is what I run, then you could try a fresh install of Kies. Scrub the system of all things Samsung (apps, drivers, etc..) and then do a fresh install of Kies. Let it install the drivers. Once complete reconnect phone and let Windows reinstall drivers for device. Then see if you can get the computer to see the phone.
If that doesn't work, there was a post about a patched .dll that worked for some. Search for "Kies doesn't recognize my phone".

Maybe their "by the end of the year" is lunar calendar year... which will put the release at 2/2/2011.

[Q] Infuse 4G and Kies

I connected my brandy new infuse 4G monster phone to my PC (Windows 7 - 64 bit OS) and saw the three choices for the phone in USB mode: Kies (Firmware Update); Media Player; Mass Storage. My curiosity got the best of me and I discovered that Kies was an app that would make my Phone friendly with Windows and Outlook and Media players. Yay.
So the hunt began, apparently this is a hard to find program, I finally downloaded a version (2.0.0.11044_11) Installed, rebooted, started the program, connected the phone and got this message from Kies: This device is not supported by Kies 2.0 Make sure that your device is supported and try again.
Now what? Is there a new version that I don't about? Are there drivers that I need? Do I need to be out of the U.S. How do I get this to work please.
I have not rooted my phone yet, not really sure I want to or need to, so let me know if that's a consideration. thanks.
I just went through 45 minutes looking for the same info. lol. This is my first Samsung phone but NOT my first android. What the heck is KIES for anyways? Is it suppsoe to be like itunes?

well it was and so much more but then they decided it wasnt for america, i think something to do with samsung apps or something so they came out with kies mini for the captivate and others but all kies mini does is firmware updates that they dont want to push over the air. and it doesnt run on linux or mac so many users need to borrow a friends pc to get firmware updates
kies full which you can download from the samsung site in europe can edit your contacts and do other functions that i cant remember atm. it can also sideload apps whick likely pissed att off, but now they are changing there tune because they can never regulat the android market so they unknown sources being disabled doesnt help them regulate the phone in anyway useful
the i997 kies version is not available last i looked. the i9000 version in europe may eventually work and that's the one to get. but i have done without it and really hate mtp anyway. id rather drag and drop media into the sdcard.
did they ever kies to work under windows 7 64bit?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
Kies Mini works on 7 64-bit for me. New Infuse shows up as unrecognized under the firmware version. When I had my Captivate (broken LCD ), it worked fine on Win7.

Sounds like it might be a pointless app. So I should I just keep my eyes open for the i997 or i9000 version? Now if only there were a link I could check in with periodically.

you can get the i9000 version by searching google, make sure you get directed to a site that is for england or something, maybe canada as they have the i9000m. it may work.
for the att i997 version you would simply go to samsungs website and look for support downloads for this model phone. it might be listed under firmware or something. im not on windows so it doesnt do me any good anyways.
i tried kies out, just to see what it would do. i got the same error about it not being supported. but what i find funny, is the phone gives you "kies" as the first option when you plug it in.
Kies Mini Recognizes Infuse
Kies Mini recognizes my infuse but calls it "unregistered Device". Can someone else confirm please.
Try and find the app 'kies air'. I have it through the infused rom, but I'm pretty sure you can still get it. It Makes it so you can delete and add files through your web browser on your pc.

Firmware update for brand new G7P

Hi all. I received mine in the mail today. Lots I like such as size weight build and speaker quality. Camera pretty decent too.
As I was setting up I noticed there was a flash of upgrade available but when I went to settings nothing happened on update. I swear I remember seeing to do the update there was a thread on how to do it but could not find it. Anyone remember?
Also I tried to side load the hbogo.apk from my atrix phone. Installs fine but then comes up with not compatible with this device. Am I missing something here as well. I'll keep reading.
I'm coming from the Asus TF.

Download and install Samsung Kies onto you pc and then connect your GT7+ to the pc with kies running. It will detect the GT7+ and tell you if you need to update the firmware and give you teh option to update it. Easiest way I know how to do it as I don't think updating is supported over wifi or 3g.
As for your app it sounds like it does not support Honeycomb and that is why it won't run. Your other devices are more than likely either running Gingerbread or Froyo.
sdelliott31 after you manage to upgrade your software on 7+ would you please come back to us with some information about the new firmware.
apparently it should be a 147MB file size bringing version EKL1 Android 3.2 Honeycomb and its for Wi-Fi US model.
can you confirm this? or anyone else?

I can't confirm the size but mine updated to the EKL1 update. I also had a pop up saying there was an update available the first time I turned on the device (a new one as I returned my original for SOD).

[Q] Australian unbranded Note 10.1 N8000 - no JB update yet?

Hi, I have an Australian bought (from JB Hi-fi) unbranded Note 10.1 Wifi+3G and despite some internet reports that this device got Jellybean in the last few weeks, and other internet reports that it got it in November 2012(!), there's no sign of an update for me (it says "No updates available" each time I check). Why?
This article from an Australian retailer says the Note 10.1 got the update in November 2012!
http://www.mobicity.com.au/mobile-b...update-released-for-samsung-galaxy-note-10-1/
Sorry to start another JB update thread, but most of the talk in the other threads is from people who already have it, and this is a question specifically about us Australians who don't.
Ok, the goss from here is that Australia simply doesn't have it yet, and no samsung representatives seem to know when it will.
Hi Peeps,
Does anyone know when our Tablets will get an official update to 4.1.2 or even 4.1.1, I keep watching the Samsung YouTube chanel and they always show of all the features of JB but yetthey wont upgrade ours and leave it on ICS.

JB is a significant improvement, just go ahead and flash it with one of the other country ROMs that are available.

People who have imported them from the US have got them, though.
It's pretty annoying how I keep reading that "pretty much everyone" has it now. We don't! I guess I'll keep waiting. Hope we get it Q1 2013.
Bugger that, use ODIN and get whatever firmware you want... If you want to stick to stock, make sure to get a copy of the Aussie ICS rom from sammobile so you can downgrade and then upgrade to Aussie JB later....
Trust me, it's a heap smoother and JB has a few extra bits and piece over ICS... Worth the upgrade....
You don't need to be rooted for the overseas firmwares... Though I prefer to be... Blocks the security exploits nicely...
^^^
What he said - United Arab Emirates don't have JB yet either.
I just downloaded and flashed German 4.1.2 (XXCLL3) on my N8000.
For my Daughter's N8010 I downloaded and flashed German 4.1.1 (XXBLK9)
Both work perfectly.
As I haven't rooted, I'd rather go with Samsung's upgrade and keep all my app data and settings.
With ODIN I expect I'd lose them (and even if not, I'd be strongly recommended to do a factory reset).
Up to you, but Oz being the ass(you know what I mean) end of the world I wouldn't expect the update any time soon....
Same for most tech, low customer base and too far to ship so we get EVERYTHING last....
I haven't waited for the updates t arrive on any of my phones and tablets as we seem to be about 6 months behind, more if you have a carrier branded device...

[Q] Should I let OTA updates install?

Hi there, I just got this tablet with its awesome screen a couple of days ago and as the title says I'm not sure if I should let the OTA run.
I already have a GS2 so I was aware of the eMMC bug and I also have an overly cautious nature so I said no to the updates and turned the auto check for updates feature off.
I got the P6810 version.
Currently it is on a ROM the firmware websites don't recognise:
2.6.36-P6810DTKL4-CL602212
I have no idea what version it will update to as if I ask it to check and agree to the disclaimers the download size is listed as less than a megabyte.
I have read quite a few of the threads here but none of them made things completely clear as to what to do in this situation. One of the posts said not to do a wipe with a Honeycomb based ROM which is what this is.
By the sounds of it we should get Jelly Bean in a month or so, well it is rumored and that would be great. I'm not sure I really need a rooted custom ROM but I definitely need to be off Honeycomb!
Thanks for your time.
I was having problems with my wi-fi connection and had to set it manually, I thought that perhaps the update might address that so I let it update.
It was 0.07Mb and has taken it to:
2.6.36-P6810DTKL5-CL604290
Now it says no updates available but the firmware sites say there are a few newer versions including an ICS based one. I guess I need to do that manually or via Kies, which I don't really trust.
I'll wait for advice from more knowledgeable people.
I would and have trusted Samsung Kies before for updates... not on this device, but on my Notes... and it did just fine...
good luck

Thanks for the reply Jimmbomb, I had a bit of a think about it and figured if it died I'd just be without it while it got fixed or replaced. Given I wasn't used to having it I probably wouldn't miss it so I gave Kies another try. This is unlike my phone which I need to work and, after it wiped and failed to restore my data and settings, I haven't updated my phone. I know I really should but once burnt twice shy.
I haven't used Kies for over a year, in that time it has improved significantly and actually did what it claimed to!
My initial reluctance to use it was based off my initial experience with it, it seems like Samsung have listened to feedback and fixed it up which is good news for us.
Now we just need to patiently wait for the JB release, hopefully it will be like the update for the GS2 and include the fancy features, smart stay being the one I expect will be most useful for a tablet.
I was wrong, Kies still has some problems.
I thought I'd plug my SGS2 in to see what would happen, it doesn't detect it although windows has no problems talking to it and letting me copy files via explorer.
I did the 'troubleshoot connection' procedure and all it does is reinstall the USB driver, since doing that neither device will connect to Kies!
Time to uninstall and try again I guess, SO frustrating given the size of company Samsung is.
Yep.
Samsung fraks it up on a number of fronts.
I think they need to learn that putting 5000 versions of devices on the market and then providing crappy support is an approach to business that leaves a bad impression.
