I'm not sure about the rest of you Captivate owners, but mine has been undergoing a serious update for the past 2 hours. The first update I noticed was to Kies Mini from v10082.8.1 to v1.0.0.110104.1. I couldn't upgrade using Kies mini. Instead, Kies mini simply updated itself.
After seeing this, I performed a Phone update from my Captivate itself and it's still going at it.
Let us know if it is froyo

not to burst your bubble, but it probably isn't, for like the millionth time if official Froyo is released you will hear about it, stop being so optimistic whenever a kies update comes out. Trust me when this thing hits it'll hit hard, you won't not know lol

Many posts about Kies Mini update last week.
When Froyo does drop you'll see all kinds of articles on the regular internet sites.
Added: I'm still betting on St. Patrick's Day!
those #'s refer to KIES software versions.
It is simply and update for your Kies desktop software......nothing to do with firmware for your smartphone.
I'm still going for Christmas - although they had said by end of November... so we still have what? 2 more days at this point

Actually - the date for US has always been "by the end of the year" as reported by SamsungUSA twitter and facebook. It was the international Galaxy S (i9000) that was end of November. Many sites interpreted that to mean us to as our phones are also "Galaxy S".
My bad... false alarm. Nothing to see here. Move along.
I'm still puzzled why both Kies mini and my phone took ages to do whatever it did. Whateva! I want some Froyo!
Well all signs point to very soon. Samsung said we would get it by the end of the year, which means in less than a month. There was also a tip a couple weeks ago that Captivates running Froyo out of the box would go on sale on the first Sunday in December and the OTA would begin rolling out possibly the Monday after (12/6).
Can we all agree to post news about a Froyo update AFTER you actually get the OS on your phone?
It seems like every other day someone posts news that they have been notified/downloading an update.

Speaking of the new version of Kies... Since mine upgraded, it won't let me check for updates while in debug mode. When I take it out of debug mode, my PC doesn't see my phone... Any ideas?

What os are you running? If it Win 7 x64, this is what I run, then you could try a fresh install of Kies. Scrub the system of all things Samsung (apps, drivers, etc..) and then do a fresh install of Kies. Let it install the drivers. Once complete reconnect phone and let Windows reinstall drivers for device. Then see if you can get the computer to see the phone.
If that doesn't work, there was a post about a patched .dll that worked for some. Search for "Kies doesn't recognize my phone".

Maybe their "by the end of the year" is lunar calendar year... which will put the release at 2/2/2011.

So, I'm running JI6 and I just got this notice...
"AT&T is providing a free update for your phone. When asked to install the update, please select OK."
Shouldn't this only appear when running 2.1 builds?
did you install it to see what it was?

That would sure be interesting to know...thinking just the crappy JH7 update, but the hopefull in me is very curious...
I actually got the same thing today but I'm avoiding it like the plague.
No chance in hell the ATT can provide me something as amazing as cognition2.2
Heh...
So, I got the same message from AT&T as OP a few hours ago, and I just noticed a "Could not connect to the server" window. I'm guessing that by running Cog2.2 on my phone, the server won't push the update to it given that it isn't running an official build.
Oh well
I can test this later as i have flashed back to stock 2.1, after testing JI6, and experiencing issues with key apps i use on a day to day basis. but i am curious to see about this update. I mean the most harm it could do is a software related "brick" right?

Furthermore, it states on my JH7 build that no user data would be lost - is this an over the air Froyo? I'm running 2.1 and already did the first update for JH7, so what is this?

Yep, and the bad news is....... I can't say what the hell the update was for considering it sat "preparing" it for a while, then failed to update, not unlike the issues others were having when putting on JH7 (mine updated right away, but my girlfriend's did not) - just tried to roll it a day forward to trick it, and it showed no update available! Will keep working on it, but there can't be just TWO of us who have seen this message when waking up this AM....
It will be the same JH7 OTA. AT&T just started sending out SMS to random Captivate owners. Nothing new. There is no way, nor AT&T cares, for AT&T to know you have updated to other firmware or not via SMS. They probably picking you out of the ppl who haven't tried to do OTA update.
Every Captivate user will receive this text message once, regardless of what version they are on. AT&T can't see what version of Android OS you are running. What they are doing is sending a text message to all users that are showing a Captivate on file in chunks. I haven't received that message yet, but even though I'm running Froyo via Cog 2.2, I'm still gonna get this message at some point.
Just ignore it unless you really want to play with their over the air update (which apparently bricks phones if you've ever altered it from stock in any way, even if you Odin back to JF6....)
Personal opinion? Ignore it. CL, continue the great work you are doing on the Jupiter.xml edits / development. I read into your posts at least every other day.
Thanks folks,

It doesn't brick the phone, it just will fail during install, that's all. So your phone will remain in the same state since nothing will have been installed.

For most, your phone will stay in quasi state: neither JF6, not JH7. And probably will never be able to upgrade again via either OTA or Kies. You have to Odin it.
For some, it actually bricks their phone, i.e. can't boot pass the logo screen.

I have heard of very few people who have bricked there phone doing the OTA Update. For almost everyone the update fails and the phone boots into you previous ROM and gives you a message that no changes have been made to your phone.
Brick is a strong word to use. Brick indicates the phone has no hope of being used again. You can almost always ODIN your phone if all else fails.

Actually, from what I read here, most failed update will show your phone is already at JH7 but none of the JH7 features are there. So, no, it does not boots into previous ROM.
So I called Samsung about the OTA firmware failing on my Captivate. I had to use ODIN at one point, so that's why it failed supposingly. Samsung said that there was an issue with v1 of the firmware update and there is now a v2, however Samsung couldn't tell me baseband version and they told me to call AT&T.
I called AT&T and asked them about this v2. They said that firmware I897UCJH7 has been released to fixed various bugs, some other items, and she specifically said GPS. So, I'm not sure what Samsung was meaning by v2, unless they meant this JH7 was v2 and what came on the phone out of the box was v1.
While I had AT&T on the phone I thought I'd ask about Android 2.2 and when it was going to be released. The AT&T rep said, "Hang on while I Google that for you." I was like WTH, really? This is where AT&T gets their information I guess... HA
Alot of times they google my questions. They do it for most questions that don't involve can't receive text and whatnot. Feature phone, they can help, smart phone, no way in hell.
From a phone on an app
I'm running stock 2.1 with root and I have the message. I will back up and reflash later tonight to see if I can download it and put it up for y'all. But currently, it fails the same way op described.

The OTA update of JH7 is a special diff version with scripts in order to minize the download size (12 MB vs 120+MB). Obviously, the original script doesn't work very well. So, Samsung probably changed it so that it won't fail so easily. That's what Samsung means by v1 and v2. The final result, JH7, will be the same and you can easily do it via Kies Mini instead of playing Russian Roulette with OTA update.
Does anyone have any info on getting Kies to work on the Mesmerize?
I have tried.
All of what I have seen about Kies is that it is not a NA offering and mainly EU. Samsung has message that software not avail in this country. I am only seeing instances of people using it on i9000's and such (still learning the sub categories of Galaxy 9's)
But if it is possible this would be the place to learn. Loved XDA back in my WinMo days. 3 days into Android land from Crackberry and wondering what took me so long to jump the fence.

They did release a KiesMini for some of the US versions, but sadly we Mesmerize folks still get no love. We will have to wait and see what Q1 brings to see if we get a Kies for us or if we just get an OTA. The minute I see something come across the line, I will post it (as long as it's nothing that would get me fired anyway).
I sent them an email a couple of days ago explaining crap thats going on with the phone and how Froyo 2.2 would from what i understand fix most of the problems etc etc. I just wanted to try again to find out about a date. Well i got an email back from tec. upport saying they are glad to announce that the 2.2 update IS available and to call their 800 number for help if i had problems installing. but clicking on the link just brings me to the old FAQ page that they took down. Come on Samsung get a freaking clue. I don't understand why they would send this out and not be true?????
(so maybe things will be rolling out today then because after rereading email i noticed their central time which is 3 hours behind me. So right now my time there still closed) Fingers crossed
Ok so just got of the phone with Samsung. Acording to them and the information they have in their office Froyo 2.2 IS OUT but because theres a problem with the site we don't can't download it yet lol Samsung needs to really get an Fing clue.
I'm pretty sure you need to install that with Kies Mini if it is, indeed, available.

Nothing showing up on Kies Mini eather. So again am hoping that things will start rolling out as soon as they open at 9 central time.
I saw another post at AT&T official forum about multiple Samsung reps claim the 2.2 for Froyo is avialable and directed to the same link. Looks like Samsung already trained or released information about Captivate 2.2 release internally, a bit prematurally. So, it seems our UCKB1 ROM will be the official ROM after all. It is just waiting for AT&T to give the final nod.
<--- not holding his breath... Plus, the more I think about it, at this point... What's the point? I mean, 2.2 is rapidly aging and I'm not aware of any newly released devices coming out with 2.1 anymore - They've all got 2.2, which means that 2.3 is the next step.... and with the excellent development we already have, running stable 2.2 is already a reality! I want the update just so the companies are held to their promises, but as for an official 2.2; I'm not going back to ATT bloatware and half ass GPS.
Tried OTA update and it just hung......
I tired to go into media hub yesterday just to see if i missed it being fixed and it hung on checking for update. Checked phone for OTA and it also hung on checking for update. funny thing is about 4 days ago everything was working just fine. Im about to get on the phone with ATT and ***** about the email and when samsung opens and nothing happenes today will be on the phone *****ing about sending false emails to people.
So basically Samsung has just changed the lies from "It will be out soon" to "It's out now but you can't have it"! Way to go Samsung!
UCKB1 has a working media hub. If I were you I'd just install that. It'll probably end up being the official build anyhow.
Bunch of crap Samsung is. wow.....
Just got done talking to live support. what a joke. i have a dam email saying it's out. if you call and talk to someone they say all the info they have says it's out but live says its not and gives you the say crap as before about no info right now. Someone over there needs to get their head out of their ass and get a CLUE.
I connected my brandy new infuse 4G monster phone to my PC (Windows 7 - 64 bit OS) and saw the three choices for the phone in USB mode: Kies (Firmware Update); Media Player; Mass Storage. My curiosity got the best of me and I discovered that Kies was an app that would make my Phone friendly with Windows and Outlook and Media players. Yay.
So the hunt began, apparently this is a hard to find program, I finally downloaded a version (2.0.0.11044_11) Installed, rebooted, started the program, connected the phone and got this message from Kies: This device is not supported by Kies 2.0 Make sure that your device is supported and try again.
Now what? Is there a new version that I don't about? Are there drivers that I need? Do I need to be out of the U.S. How do I get this to work please.
I have not rooted my phone yet, not really sure I want to or need to, so let me know if that's a consideration. thanks.

well it was and so much more but then they decided it wasnt for america, i think something to do with samsung apps or something so they came out with kies mini for the captivate and others but all kies mini does is firmware updates that they dont want to push over the air. and it doesnt run on linux or mac so many users need to borrow a friends pc to get firmware updates
kies full which you can download from the samsung site in europe can edit your contacts and do other functions that i cant remember atm. it can also sideload apps whick likely pissed att off, but now they are changing there tune because they can never regulat the android market so they unknown sources being disabled doesnt help them regulate the phone in anyway useful
the i997 kies version is not available last i looked. the i9000 version in europe may eventually work and that's the one to get. but i have done without it and really hate mtp anyway. id rather drag and drop media into the sdcard.
did they ever kies to work under windows 7 64bit?

Kies Mini works on 7 64-bit for me. New Infuse shows up as unrecognized under the firmware version. When I had my Captivate (broken LCD ), it worked fine on Win7.

you can get the i9000 version by searching google, make sure you get directed to a site that is for england or something, maybe canada as they have the i9000m. it may work.
for the att i997 version you would simply go to samsungs website and look for support downloads for this model phone. it might be listed under firmware or something. im not on windows so it doesnt do me any good anyways.
i tried kies out, just to see what it would do. i got the same error about it not being supported. but what i find funny, is the phone gives you "kies" as the first option when you plug it in.
Kies Mini Recognizes Infuse
Kies Mini recognizes my infuse but calls it "unregistered Device". Can someone else confirm please.
Try and find the app 'kies air'. I have it through the infused rom, but I'm pretty sure you can still get it. It Makes it so you can delete and add files through your web browser on your pc.

Hi there, I just got this tablet with its awesome screen a couple of days ago and as the title says I'm not sure if I should let the OTA run.
I already have a GS2 so I was aware of the eMMC bug and I also have an overly cautious nature so I said no to the updates and turned the auto check for updates feature off.
I got the P6810 version.
Currently it is on a ROM the firmware websites don't recognise:
2.6.36-P6810DTKL4-CL602212
I have no idea what version it will update to as if I ask it to check and agree to the disclaimers the download size is listed as less than a megabyte.
I have read quite a few of the threads here but none of them made things completely clear as to what to do in this situation. One of the posts said not to do a wipe with a Honeycomb based ROM which is what this is.
By the sounds of it we should get Jelly Bean in a month or so, well it is rumored and that would be great. I'm not sure I really need a rooted custom ROM but I definitely need to be off Honeycomb!
Thanks for your time.
I was having problems with my wi-fi connection and had to set it manually, I thought that perhaps the update might address that so I let it update.
It was 0.07Mb and has taken it to:
2.6.36-P6810DTKL5-CL604290
Now it says no updates available but the firmware sites say there are a few newer versions including an ICS based one. I guess I need to do that manually or via Kies, which I don't really trust.
I'll wait for advice from more knowledgeable people.
I would and have trusted Samsung Kies before for updates... not on this device, but on my Notes... and it did just fine...
good luck

Thanks for the reply Jimmbomb, I had a bit of a think about it and figured if it died I'd just be without it while it got fixed or replaced. Given I wasn't used to having it I probably wouldn't miss it so I gave Kies another try. This is unlike my phone which I need to work and, after it wiped and failed to restore my data and settings, I haven't updated my phone. I know I really should but once burnt twice shy.
I haven't used Kies for over a year, in that time it has improved significantly and actually did what it claimed to!
My initial reluctance to use it was based off my initial experience with it, it seems like Samsung have listened to feedback and fixed it up which is good news for us.
Now we just need to patiently wait for the JB release, hopefully it will be like the update for the GS2 and include the fancy features, smart stay being the one I expect will be most useful for a tablet.
I was wrong, Kies still has some problems.
I thought I'd plug my SGS2 in to see what would happen, it doesn't detect it although windows has no problems talking to it and letting me copy files via explorer.
I did the 'troubleshoot connection' procedure and all it does is reinstall the USB driver, since doing that neither device will connect to Kies!
Time to uninstall and try again I guess, SO frustrating given the size of company Samsung is.
Yep.
Samsung fraks it up on a number of fronts.
I think they need to learn that putting 5000 versions of devices on the market and then providing crappy support is an approach to business that leaves a bad impression.
