Tethering/hotspot? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Why cant i use tether or hotspot? Do i have to pay verizon to use these?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app

My understanding is that since the court decision they lost they will charge you to use the tethering app that comes on the phone, but you can get a 3rd party tethering app from the Play Store and be okay. Someone here could clarify.

It all depends on the plan that you're on...the FCC ruling did not apply to unlimited plans so you do still have to pay Verizon the fee for that...they did have to allow tethering apps to be available on the market though as part of the ruling
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium

The court ruling only applies to those on a Share Everything plan. Those of us on grandfathered plans are not suppose to tether without the plan add-on.

I think its everyone on any data plan other then the unlimited even there older plans like the 2gb 5gb ect. I think the shared data already includes mobile hot spot included into the price

For the most part as long as your not completely abusing it you should be fine overall. I have heard several reports of people with unlimited data using Foxifi just fine. However I will warn that there is always a possibility of Verizon finding out in which case, I'm afraid your own your own.

All Share Everything plans include hotspot/tethering.

Put your sim in an iphone 2g.
That gives you the option of unlimited data for feature phone. get it and then you can grandfather in to smartphone unlimited

ive done the trick twice for my personal lines and another three times for friends its simple
1. reset all the settings so u have to activate it
2.insert your sim card and activate enabling the unlimited data
3. be patient and wait until the phone says activated
4. WAIT UNTIL ITS ACTIVATED
5. once activated call att customer service
6. say ur upgrading from the iPhone 2g to the new phone and request to be grandfathered into the new unlimited plan
7. if they say they can ask for a supervisor and go higher
Will this work on a 3g or 3gs?

No, you can continue to use unlimited data. That's the "official" way of having unlimited data. This is for people who never had it, like myself. I wish the iphones that are on ebay didn't cost $100+... It's a lot for something I'll use once.

none of these hokey pokey is necessary. Just go to an ATT store and have them change your data plan to 4g unlimited for $30. It is not an available option on the web.

Suckness if true
I'm no longer under contract, but I'll ride the unlimited data for the time being.
FML .
The question I have, though, is if using a non-AT&T radio could stop the ability to be throttled. Anyone care to chime in?
The throttling isn't done on the device, it's done on their end.
EDIT: ATT FTL if this is true.
After an extensive call with att, they said this will NOT be happening.

Combine cellular data limits and AT&T's home DSL data limits along with Netflix (and every other provider) trying to force us into using streaming media and VoIP, and we get screwed.

The top 5% feel the pain it looks like. I suppose if you are using 10+ gigs a month I am not sure I feel for ya. Personally I have never gone over 5 but I also have internet service at Home.
Here come the "I pay for unlimited" posts.
If it doesn't affect me I don't care. I use maybe 3 gigs a month..
If it adversely affects me then It will give me reasons to look else where when I get to re-up again.
Anyone know if this is enough of a change to the plan you signed up for to allow canceling the account?
Lmao WiFi and using maybe 4gigs works for me.imo

Read about the limit
I read on a post yesterday (can't find it now) that the expected threshold for throttling will be somewhere in the vicinity of 50gb a month. In my mind, reasonable.

Wifi Tethering Extra Cost?

Well, I would like to wifi tether my SGS4G but it's an extra $15/month. So I was wondering if I rooted my SGS4G, would wifi tethering be free?

Yeah. Keep in mind that it will void your warranty though.
As long as T-Mobile doesn't detect it, you won't have to pay for it. A customer service rep actually told me that when I asked about it. My sister was using the wireless tethering for months without paying for a plan.
Keep in mind that this was a couple of months ago though. They might have gotten more strict about that.
wifi tethering is included on any android phone 2.2 or higher at no additional cost. (the one thing that i am going to miss about tmobile :*(
Wait, my SGS4G has Froyo, but everyone says that it's extra cost.

If you can tether now without a plan, you're fine.
Just stop once T-Mobile says, "Hey, you've been tethering! You can't do that without a plan!!!" Tell them that the customer rep you went to said you could.
Like I said in my previous post, as long as they don't tell you that you need a plan, you can get away with free tethering. Just keep in mind this information is a few months old.
I believe you can tether with Tmobile, you'll just hit your bandwidth cap a lot sooner and your speed will be throttled down to 2G speeds after you hit your limit.

I would like them to offer unlimited data for the rest of my life. Please don’t exploit it with a workaround. Oh, and I have a rooted HTC One S and was able to tether for about 20 minutes, then was redirected to a t-mobile page explaining how to purchase. Don't be that sliver of the market that causes the engineers to drop the unlimited plan. They are taking a risk offering it in the first place.
Respectfully,
Josh-
How does the limit on roami.g data work with this plan.

Should be able to use the tmobile apn settings to get around the tethering restriction. Search the threads, the settings are around here somewhere. I think one (or more) of the rom threads in the development section show the settings, maybe Axiom or Trickdroid if I'm not mistaken...
Yeah I tried that with mine the APN changes.
Got it to work at first where before it didn't.
It transfered about 100 MB worth of data then I got the redirect trying to sell me the service and stopped working.
WiFi tether for root users works wonders, I haven't had problems with it on my 5Gb plan.

I have the unlimited 4G data plan with Tmobile. I used almost 1gb of data in about 10 days already. In my account, it says it has 9999 gb total for me; Guessing 9999 gb equates to unlimited. It's worth it IMO for 30 bucks a month.

At some point the consumer needs to read and research what they are getting into. We cant control what services a company is selling. Only choose to buy it or not.

Complete waste of time. Let's see, so far I think 10 states have petitioned the white house for secession from the USA with over 100,000 signatures and as far as I know we still have 50 states.
Its already illegal to advertise falsely, but everyone gets around it with fine print. You won;t change that. Too many lawyers need business.

In regards to Sprint, I'm sure somewhere in their "contract" there are provisions that allow them to boot "abuse" of their "unlimited" provisions. It only makes sense, as if every user started downloading movies, etc. continuously their network would come to a stretching halt.
In regards to others that offer unlimited, they don't say at what speed. So, if you're usage is so hi they throttle you, you're still getting unlimited, just not at their highest speed. So, while it's a PR nightmare, it's not a legal issue.
With the proliferation of free WiFi almost everywhere, to me anyway, it's a non issue.
