Truly unlimited data T-Mobile. - HTC One S

Anyone have it? They told me that I can't tether the phone once I switch. But I'm rooted and was wondering if they can see if I'm tethering.

I would like them to offer unlimited data for the rest of my life. Please don’t exploit it with a workaround. Oh, and I have a rooted HTC One S and was able to tether for about 20 minutes, then was redirected to a t-mobile page explaining how to purchase. Don't be that sliver of the market that causes the engineers to drop the unlimited plan. They are taking a risk offering it in the first place.
Respectfully,
Josh-

How does the limit on roami.g data work with this plan.

Should be able to use the tmobile apn settings to get around the tethering restriction. Search the threads, the settings are around here somewhere. I think one (or more) of the rom threads in the development section show the settings, maybe Axiom or Trickdroid if I'm not mistaken...

Yeah I tried that with mine the APN changes.
Got it to work at first where before it didn't.
It transfered about 100 MB worth of data then I got the redirect trying to sell me the service and stopped working.

WiFi tether for root users works wonders, I haven't had problems with it on my 5Gb plan.

I have the unlimited 4G data plan with Tmobile. I used almost 1gb of data in about 10 days already. In my account, it says it has 9999 gb total for me; Guessing 9999 gb equates to unlimited. It's worth it IMO for 30 bucks a month.

Suckness if true
I'm no longer under contract, but I'll ride the unlimited data for the time being.
FML .
The question I have, though, is if using a non-AT&T radio could stop the ability to be throttled. Anyone care to chime in?
The throttling isn't done on the device, it's done on their end.
EDIT: ATT FTL if this is true.

It's all a money grab.
Combine cellular data limits and AT&T's home DSL data limits along with Netflix (and every other provider) trying to force us into using streaming media and VoIP, and we get screwed.

The top 5% feel the pain it looks like. I suppose if you are using 10+ gigs a month I am not sure I feel for ya. Personally I have never gone over 5 but I also have internet service at Home.
Here come the "I pay for unlimited" posts.
If it doesn't affect me I don't care. I use maybe 3 gigs a month..
If it adversely affects me then It will give me reasons to look else where when I get to re-up again.
Anyone know if this is enough of a change to the plan you signed up for to allow canceling the account?

I read on a post yesterday (can't find it now) that the expected threshold for throttling will be somewhere in the vicinity of 50gb a month. In my mind, reasonable.

T-Mobile us 5gb plan includes tethering

As title states, I saw a post some were asking if the 5 gig data plan includes tethering. I just got of the phone with t mobile and it dose. Just for anyone who was wandering.

are you rooted
i tried it with a rooted one s and didn't work
will try my Tether App
No i have stock phone. To be clear though. I do not own a laptop so I can't test it. I'm just relaying what the T-Mobile dude told me. But when I connect my usb to the desktop and select USB tether I don't get any blocks or messages so I would conclude that the USB tethering is permitted.

Okay, I think I know...first install the HTC sync driver.... Then make sure that works. And I bet the tether well work then. It did for me I tested on the desktop. Good luck.

Already installed but not recognizing phone. It did recognize phone when first installed. Has given me some some adb issues. Will probaly uninstall it.
Well at least you can get it to work with another tether app. And plus since tethering is included in the 5 gigs plan they shouldn't bother you about tethering. I don't think they care what app you use anyway.
Sent from my HTC One S
They did with my nexus one.
Hopefully they won't bother me with this phone.
The guy at Tmobile said I needed to pay 5 dollars a month for the data plan that included tethering. He said it was needed for the phone... I always root my devices so I tether either way but I said okay and got the phone. Since I was paying for it I decided to try it out and it's actually not bad. You activate it through the wifi hotspots in the app drawer. I'm on a EU rom now so I'm not sure what it's called on Tmobile US rom... Anyways it works perfectly and is able to tether up to 8 devices but I would assume you're data couldn't handle that much lol. Goes to show how good Tmobile thinks their HSPA is.... It is pretty nice having the option tethering multiple devices. I'm happy paying 5 bucks for that feature
Oh I almost forgot it works perfectly rooted or unrooted... I tried it before rooting and it works just the same now.

The 5 gig plan includes tethering. I am not rooted and upgraded to that plan for the purpose of tethering and it includes it. At first it did not work, I called and said, I was told this plan included tethering, the lady was very nice and enabled it. Told me to turn the phone off and reboot and then it would work. It did. I haven't done anything else and the native app works great.

I think if the 5 does, so should the 10 gb, I think at one point it was advertised as having tethering, just call and act like you were told this was the case. I thought I was going to have to threaten things but they did it without argument.
I just looked at their webpage and all their new plans seem to include it. It doesn't hurt to call.

Wireless tethering

I have an HTC one x att, I was wondering since I am on vacation I would like to use tethering I have unlimited data. I was wondering is there anyway I could mask the data usage and tethering from art so they cannot see I am using it.
I am rooted, and I have tetherguard installed. Is there anyway to add apn so att doesn't find out I'm tethering or throttle my 4g data.
Thank you

If you ask 10 people this (or do 10 Google searches), you're going to get 10 different answers. The bottom line is that no one quite seems to know how AT&T tracks/detects tethering or how they decide whom to go after.
I've been tethering shamelessly for years, first on my jailbroken iPhones and now on my HOX, and I've never gotten a single warning about it.
In my experience, the main thing is to keep your data usage down. Don't use it to move large files or stream video. In general, from what I've seen, it's the bandwidth hogs who get caught.
Various people/devs will tell you there are various ways of "hiding" your tethering, but I have doubts these people really know what they're talking about. Nothing is going to hide the fact that your Android phone has put in an http request to visit Microsoft update because your laptop wants to update itself.
Thank you and I was wondering since I have unlimited data do you know how much data you can use until att will send the throttling message.

It varies but 5GB is usually the threshold. I've gotten up to 4.8 without getting throttled.
Also one thing, if they do throttle is it for rest of life or for just till rest of billing cycle.

They monitor your data usage, and if it spikes they go back and check to see if the destination ip of the packets is set to anything other than your phone.
You should have received at least one warning though.
Sent from my One X using xda app-developers app
You should give them a call but they detect it with the number of bumps It takes to connect the data I believe..... But you should of recieved a warning
I thought Canada had it bad when it came to plans but this is ridiculous. They actually force you to go on a tethering plan? $50 for 5GB?
Jeez... That's pricey.
I'm so glad Canadian carriers don't have restrictions on tethering other than you need at least 1GB of data.

They told my dad that were going to give me a warning...next time I receive this message I'm going down to att and make them prove to me that I'm tethering since all I do on my phones is surf the net, download apps, be on Xda, and on eBay.

You wouldn't win if you go down the store....its quite simple to tell if someone's tethering just measure the number of bumps it took to carry the data.... Even if it was three months ago they recorded it and maybe youve been using a lot of data lately...don't use tethering now since you're on their radar

Tru.dat. And by "bumps", kittens means "hops". They will scold you for it. Which is bs. A "hop" is one device transferred to another. Aka AT&T to your phone is 1 hop.. AT&T to your phone to your PC is 2. They can see this.

Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
I only tether when I absolutely need too...they USUALLY will look at people who use huge amounts of data on their unlimited plans and from their they determine if they're tethering or not. .but if you have a huge data peak they will check you out so I try not to tether really except when its necessary
I agree. I'm on a 3gb a month plan and that barely gets me by the month. Time to hit the lotto and crest my own carrier

More money for them...data is data they could easily allow you to tether on that 3gb plan it wouldn't any more of a hassle for them at all actually they wouldn't have to do anything...data is just data! One day you'll learn its all about money

I've tethered, but very seldom. Most usually if traveling, and in a place that either doesn't have WiFi for my laptop or tablet, or the hotel WiFi is too slow. Haven't had any warning or message from AT&T. Pretty sure there are a decent amount of people tethering still.
There was another thread a couple months ago, where the OP got the warning message, but swore up and down that he didn't tether at all. He asked AT&T to prove it, but don't know if they ever gave him any proof.
The method by which data use is monitored by AT&T seems far from consistent, and also seems room for error. Which looks like might be the case in your instance.

Why would we get flagged? We have unlimited data. We chose not to buy a phone subsidized by Verizon so that we can keep unlimited data.
I am the IT guy for a church and school and I've upgraded 10 users to 4G phones through eBay and Craigslist. One of our staff members uses 40GB a month, I use about 15 GB. All of us go well over 2 GB, but what does it matter? We have unlimited data!
It would stand to reason that AT&T users with grandfathered unlimited plans are more abundant than us since they can still upgrade through AT&T and keep unlimited data.
I don't see why anyone would get flagged. The number of unlimited data VZW users will only decrease over time. Verizon makes more money than anyone. They add towers practically every week.
I say, sit back, and soak up the data!
