That made me laugh so hard.. 500 signatures from an internet petition wont do anything. Big petitions that made changes are in the 10,000 to 100,000 range. 500 won't even make it to an apple store employee.
The only thing you can possibly do to stir up some trouble is boycott all apple products. Start an online movement with people willing to do it. And I'm not talking about those people who have android phones but have an iPad or use iTunes. Avoid all products!
But act quick.. apple may patent boycotting mobile phones
Sent from my Nexus Super 4G using xda app-developers app

I for one agree with boycotting Apple and I would strongly support it.
Start a Facebook page, a twitter, a Google+, etc... to spread the word and educate others about Apple's nazi regime. The more people know the more support we have with the boycott. Tell your mother, your father, your aunts and uncles, your grandparents, and everyone you meet. Present the facts and not just "I hate Apple so you should too." Show people why it would be beneficial to support the boycott.
This could be one of the biggest things since the boycott on the busses during the civil rights movement.

With the current nutjobs in the majority in the House I am not suprised. All they are about is tax cuts for the rich and de-regulate all big corporations and banks so they can rob us and poison us at the same time. It is just creeping fascism, but maybe the "creeping" is actually "running" now days. Couple that with the Roberts SCOTUS that says that corporations are people and money is speech (Citizen's united) and are allowed to buy elections, we are screwed.
Since the elite have already bought off the corporate "news" media, now they want the last bastion of free speech, the "internets".
This is really a secret conspiracy hatched by the VPN providers to force everyone to use their services or risk being thrown in jail.
Actually its Hollywood. The same people who tried to sue back in the 90's to ban mp3 players.

In another post, Tepp said that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce "will always stand" on the "side of American businesses"--an odd statement given that the list of businesses opposed to SOPA includes eBay, Yahoo, Google, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, AOL, Zynga, and many other technology companies. If it does pass piracy is going to be hitting harder than it was before. Movies will be pirated while the scene is actually taking place. Behind the scenes all the time.
Sad thing is that these companies are legally allowed to bribe our elected officials through a process called lobbying.

I wonder why "big pharma" would be against it. Canadian online drugstores making that big a dent in their profits or are they afraid of the free exchange of homeopathic remedies or is it (most likely) that the internet makes it easier for people who have suffered severe side effects from their overpriced medicines to find each other and start class action suits?
You can fight this and many other horrible bills that our bought congress creates at demandprogress.org. They organize many petitions against these bills.

Apple wastes $100,000,000 against HTC

There are rumors that Apple just wasted $100 Million in legal disputes Against HTC. Apparently, Apple patents did not hold up against HTC in court. The only patent that was successful was about tiny software feature in email app used by HTC on Android Phones.

Lol that's awesome! Maybe they should worry about making some new devices (maybe one with 4G) and quit worrying about what HTC and Samsung are doing.

I agree, Apple certainly, with their wealth, should afford to lose those amounts, however it's still a lot of money nonetheless.
Then I don't hate Apple, they have rather decent products, however I strongly dislike their ways of marketing and the way they abuse their (imho) way to big list of parents to bully other companies.
That said, if this is true, I suppose I'm happy it didn't go through since, from my understanding, $100 mil in legal disputes could have caused HTC quite some problems.

I wonder why Apple seems to win every legal dispute in Germany, but not in any other country. News says that courts in Düsseldorf and Mannheim both state, that Samsung/HTC infringes Apple's design rights, which is not patent-related. German law says, that products are not allowed to look the same. So all the judges here think that Samsung's products look the same as those from Apple.
Samsung's and HTC's "counter attack" is about patents, umts technology and such. But the German courts dismiss these technical claims. It's really weird (but nice) to hear that results of these legal disputes are the complete other way 'round in the rest of the world.

Ditto...
The point to me is that Apple's wasting money it could be using to develop better phones and tech with. And at the same time, it's forcing other companies to waste money, time and resources to battle it. That just holds back the industry and stifles innovation.
I used to be a big fan of Apple (not to the extent of being a fanboy) for how smooth their system was and is. But in the past 5 years, with all the DRM issues (starting with the iPod, even though I had one) and locking down their system so you feel you're borrowing your phone from them rather than buying it, and the patent trolling, I'm just getting more and more disillusioned...
*shrug* Feel free to correct me, but hasn't everything here essentially been stolen from the FLOSS community? The only thing these companies even provide anymore is package management and a GUI. For Apple this practice goes back to Darwin and for Google android. I suppose it's possible that the iPhone source is based on Unix (I can't do an audit).
I don't think android leverages much of X11 either.

Apple sue Motorola so they can't sue Apple ever again

http://fosspatents.blogspot.com/2012/02/apples-us-antisuit-lawsuit-against.html
You couldn't make this up, Apple are suing Motorola in the US so that, if successful, Motorola can never again take them to court (ever) for the patent infringements Apple specify. Not only that but if, as is expected, Apple win then courts in other countries are expected to also come down on Apples side in their countries Motorola cases.
As the article states:
"this is a very serious issue, and it could have major impact. Beyond presenting a good chance that Motorola will in the not too distant future be effectively precluded from enforcing its baseband patents against the iPhone 4S (and Apple products to be released in the near term), this could further increase the likelihood of serious antitrust trouble for Google-MMI in Europe and, in a worst-case scenario, it could reflect very unfavorably on Google-MMI's credibility in certain important circles."
The article then explains how Motorola, and Google (yes both companies), would also be liable to pay Apple damages for breach of contract and unfair licensing issues.
Seriously, how can you sue your competition so they can't sue you? I think that's just nuts.
The patent system is so broken and just needs a major overhaul. It's so disgusting how Apple is abusing this and the legal system. And taking someone's ability to sue and defend themselves is just insane!
It really frustrates me to see Apple do this I mean come on seriously, I wouldn't be surprised if apple wins this too since they seem to win most of there legal battle some how.
I think the biggest problem is these companies know that judges have no real clue when it comes to technology and they are using it to their advantage. Truth is I don't see them winning their no sue side of it. The truth here is that Apple is scared because Google is planning to sue them with the patents Motorola has and this is just a preemptive legal strike... but I don't see it working.

Lawsuit: Apple VS Google Android

Well this time around Apply once again has a lawsuit. This time its against Google for having a similar unlock screen on some devices. Apple is not going to stop with their crying over everything. I don't think apple products are bad, but i hate them. Apple has way to much control over what you can and can't do. I don't want Android to lose its rights to use what they want. And if we talk about coping; after android got their duel core phones/tablets guess what apple got them released next, Then new iPad 3 is going to have hdmi port and microSD and iSO5 notification pull down bar guess who had them first in their products? What im trying to say im tired of apple wanna be. If they always keep getting what they want they will rule the markets and thats not good because prices will go up and we'll lose the ability to customize our phones if android goes out of business. We as a community, developers and users, have a right to say what we feel about what apple is doing. And government cant oppose us people because they rely on our support. We need to work together as a whole and bring a stop to apple. Im not sure how we can support google, but i dont plan to sit around and do nothing. Let me know how you guys feel about this and if your willing to help.
Thank You all for your time.

Android is the Revolution of Smartphones!
These court battles are getting boring.
Apple must be losing a lot of money for them to keep chasing around these court cases like this. Maybe if they kept coming up with innovative ideas like they used to they'd be able to maintain a healthy competition.
I love Android but I think that choice should be there. Things tend to change when an economy is monopolized by one company.
wow, such BIG companies, LOL, we use Android devices can benefit from that?
i am still amazed there is no patent on how people inhale and exhale air pfff. and all these lawsuits, it's just to get more attention. and ppl can say it's negative attention, but attention is attention. Just a way to let people talk more about Apple..

Its official - court rules that Motorolas patents cannot be used against Apple

http://fosspatents.blogspot.com/2012/02/motorola-cant-enforce-standard.html
German courts have made a ruling that means if Motorola tries to use its most important patents against Apple in a court case the company will be in violation of European Anti trust law.
As the article says:
"Apple scored a breakthrough court victory today against Motorola. Its important can hardly be overstated. This is so huge that it even begs the question of whether Google's strategy for its $12.5 billion purchase of Motorola Mobility has failed before the deal is even formally closed (they're still waiting for some regulatory approvals)."
It would be nice to see Apple bought down a peg or two but the way things are going its likely to be Google-Motorola (and therefore also Android) that is on the losing side.
After all Motorola cannot use its genuinely essential patents in court now and yet Apple can still use dumb ones like voice search, touch screen, text completion etcetera that although every decent phone nowadays has these features Apple own the patents to and have been able to use in court cases so it seems Apple now have the upper hand.
Dave
Why, yes, Apple, you can patent intuitive actions on your devices all you please; and don't worry about those pesky other companies patenting worthwhile operating features, we'll make them play ball with you. Hahaha, let's go smoke this cigar together and laugh at all the little people.

They can't develop new devices without violating apples patents anymore. When the new phones with android get released after mwc you'll see more lawsuits against those models too.
Apple will win because they have patents that are not subject to frand so don't have to let people use them.
Odd thing is that apples licence offer to motorola, which stopped the injunction on iphones in Germany, is still less than motorola asked for yet judges order them to not sue apple as a result.

First of all you have to consider the source of this information to be able to evaluate the spin on this. Florian Mueller is a anti Google/Android pro MS mouthpiece who tends to be clueless.
This is a lifting of the preliminary injunction. The case itself is still pending, but It'll likely to take quite a while to finish up. Granted this isn't good news for Motorola, but it's NOT the end of the road.
Check out Groklaw for a different slant on this and other issues (eg Oracle/Google)

Partial quote:
The problem lies not with Mueller’s analysis—but with his impartiality. The engineer is right when he says that Mueller has the knives out for Google. Even a casual reader of the FOSS blog can easily discern that Mueller is quick to amplify any legal setback for Google’s Android or its affiliates. His tone can be crowing and haughty—see the tendentious “Google scores an Own Goal” post about Motorola (NYSE: MMI)—and for all the world echoes Microsoft’s own “they’re getting what they deserve” attitude to Google.
