Root question - Transformer TF300T Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have the transformer for about 2 weeks and I wan't to install a custom rom.
The only thing I'm affraid of is the warranty being void.
So my question is if its likely that i'm going to have any problem with the device whithin 1 year.

I thought this was Q & A, not Crystal Ball?
If you're that worried, root it but don't unlock it. That won't void the warranty. The stock ROM isn't so bad once rooted.

I'm not asking anyone to predict my future... I have the tablet for 2 weeks. I would just like to know if people that have thet ablet for sometime have experienced problems in the hardware.

Best answer is, there is no good answer. Some have, some haven't like me. I chose to root and run stock firmware to keep the warranty, especially since jellybean is coming.

can I undo jelly bean OTA and restore ICS?

By browsing the thread here I feel updating to jelly bean may not work out well for everyone. I got the OTA downloaded and sitting in my tf300, is there anyway to back out of it once it is installed? Please let me know .... TIA
I dont see why not, but you have to unlock BL, root, install custom recovery and flash back to a ICS rom. So if your intent is to stay pure stock and keep warranty, your probably not gonna be able to roll back to ICS if you commit to JB.

I tried to roll back by loading the firmware on internal SD. It updated but left me on jb. My boot loader is not unlocked so I would speculate no, but others are trying to do the same, so you might search other posts for this.

Thanks!
I just pulled the trigger and installed JB. I don't feel much differences. Given I just got the tf300 for less than a week, time will tell.

I'm having issues since I updated to JB and I am BL locked but rooted. Can you confirm this is 100% true, that you can't get back to ICS w/out unlocking and have installed a custom recovery? I was hoping to keep my warranty intact, this is exactly the reason I did. I think I may be sending this back to ASUS to be fixed under the warranty

Thanks for verifying that for me. I thought that was the case. It looks like RMAing is the route I will need to take

Unlocking/Rooting with current JB firmware?

Is there a way to Unlock or Root the TF700 with the current JB firmware? My TF700 came stock with JB, and it seems like Asus took down the links to the ICS firmware on their support site.
As others have said in various threads, you can be on JB and unlock no problem. It says ICS only but Asus are just lazy and haven't updated their site. I unlocked on JB and everything is fine.

So after that i'll be able to root it no problem?
Correct. I just did it last night and everything worked fine. Unlocked and rooted on latest 4.1.1 JB!

New TF700 owner here.
Curious to getting root w/o unlocking it? I looked at some other threads and only talk about keeping root while upgrading etc.
So far loving this tablet, the dock makes it 100x more useful when you need it.

As far as I know, the only way to root it without unlocking the bootloader is if you have ICS and just use the debugfs command program, as far as rooting with JB I know you have to have the bootloader unlocked. In all honesty I don't mind taking the risk of unlocking my bootloader because I have Geek Squad Protection on my tablet and can just get a new one for free.

This thread should help you out:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1938129
You should use TWRP 2.3.1 instead of 2.2.2.3, which he reccommends, though. They have fixed the issues he talks about.

Just follow this instruction but use the latest twrp version 2.3.1 instead:

I'm wanting to take the plunge myself - but do you have to use the Asus unlocker tool or is there a way around that? I'm too late to get SquareTrade I think. Too late, and too poor LOL. I just have that nagging feeling that as soon as I do the thing will bork on me.
Edit: Sorry...I just read that you can't unlock without the ASUS tool, and it's a damn shame. I want so bad to rant right now but I won't.
I think I'm still going to unlock though.
The only way I could find to root was to install CWM recovery first, and then install the CWM SuperUser app. I replaced CWM with TWRP when all was said and done. Both are now touch interfaces making things so much less laborious. The links for doing so are all around the web and these forums. I had my frustrations but in the end it was easier than I thought it would be. I'm happy I took the plunge. I believe a lot of my frustrations were from ASUS' horrible implementation of Android. My benchmarks are now 6300+ on Quadrant with 2D GPU rendering on. I know benchmarks aren't everything but, you won't be sorry if you're giving up some kind of warranty to get the device you paid premium dollar for.

Unlock or not (considering official update)?

I bought a TF700 over christmas and like it but obviously don't like the lag issues as everyone else. I was about to unlock and install CROM and then news came out about an official ASUS update *sometime* in the future. If I unlock will that preclude me from getting that update if it turns out to be a great update? Should I hold off on unlocking because of that or just jump in and not worry about the future ASUS update?
I know there is no right answer, just looking for some opinions to help me make up my mind.
Thanks!

You're correct, unlocked device will no longer receives OTA, however custom rom 99% at the time, better and faster than stock rom. If in the future you want to run stock rom, you can manually update (pretty simple, open custom recovery and flash full Asus stock rom). So there you have it, the best of both world.
Awesome, so i can always flash back to stock if a future update is outstanding. Thank you, I will move forward with the unlock!
What he meant was that you could flash the update from Asus manually. You will never get an ota update after unlock. You will have to wait for them to post it to their website or get it from a forum member to do the update manually. They are usually pretty good about putting it on the website quickly, but thought you should know that.

Understand unlocking voids factory warranty. Personally I would wait to see have the JB 4.2.1 turns out with should come out in the next 3 months

Concerning the warranty...
Do you lose all your warranty coverage?
What if the screen goes out or has a lot of dead pixels?
This is my reason for not unlocking.
I have used numerous custom roms on other phones and my touch pad, but I don't think any of those came out and said you would lose your warranty if you used a custom rom

It was my understanding that yes unlocking voids your warranty, but that has been my understanding for every smartphone and tablet i've owned (and i could be wrong).

[Q] Should I send in my Infinity?

Hey guys!
Ive bee having these problems with my tablet (lag, slow, etc) and i have done EVERYTHING Cold Boot, Factory Reset and the Firmware updates don't fix anything!
I have contacted ASUS and they said that it was a HARDWARE problem and they gave me a RMA to send it in. Should I send it in? Would they do anything?
Thanks!
Im also new to the forum so thanks!
Yes! If Asus acknowledges a hardware problem and your tab is still under warranty - what have you got to loose??
Your only alternative would be to unlock the bootloader, root and flash a custom rom, loosing your warranty in the process. Plus - if you actually have a hardware problem, no custom rom could fix it.
So send it in and hope for the best!

Hey thanks for the reply, I contacted ASUS again, and explained it in depth a little more, and they said it was the motherboard so I am going to send it in and hope for the best!
[Sorry I double posted!]
Definitely send it in. While at the facility, they can run tests on the device and they can refer back to the troubleshooting that was already done with the phone support. If it deemed a bad MB, than it will be replaced. They will figure out the best solution.

[Q] Unlocking cons after warranty expired

Now that my tablet is over 1 year old, I no longer have a warranty. The main reason why I didn't unlock is because of the warranty. I have rooted my tablet. Is there any disadvantages to unlocking the bootloader if the warranty is expired? Thanks.
None whatsoever.
If you want to try out custom roms just make sure you understand what you are doing. Done correctly there's very little risk involved. But it is possible to brick the tablet if you mess up.
