Clean up the DEV section?? Stickies. - HTC One S

Hello people and hopefully administration. I was just wondering if we could clean up the development section of some sticky threads. There are a lot of threads out of date or not really needed. I mean, just look how far down you have to scroll to see the first legit post. I have never seen an XDA dev section with so much stuff. Just a suggestion. Even if only one or two threads are removed, it's getting ridiculous.
Happy XDA'ing, Happy One S. -CSP

Re: New forum board for support?
Hi all
Could a moderator make a new forum section in the Dream heading for support?
I'm just a little tired of reading the repeated requests for help with rooting/omgz i broke my phone/rc29-rc30 posts.
This section should be for android development! For example i made two threads with 2 development questions and they've been burried by support questions which is quite frustrating to say the least.
Thanks for reading
Darkflare
good idea tbh.
was thinking about this the other day because this forum just gets so cluttered with stupid help request posts, it's hard to find anything and also, doesn't look very good to newcomers. (well, the ones that can use a search button)
whatever, i voted yes
Please please PLEASE yes.
Agreed
I Agree
People do need help (some just don't know how to search)... but the Dev forum is not the place for it.
This is a great idea, and would make the search function work better anyway.

What is wrong with the Dream forum??
I would like to see it as well but I don't really see it working. I see this happening. New people post there with questions on how to do something. Most senior members will probably stay away from that forum because of all the threads asking the same question. New people will see no one is really helping them. Then they will come back to development thread and start posting again.
You guys might as well kill this topic, it will not happen.
I spend hours alone, every day trying to keep this and the theme forum somewhat organized.
Another forum?? will not help one bit, unfortunately.
What people have to learn is how too search and read prior to posting.
What you "Vets" can do to help the situation is "Report a post" with a link where you think it should go.
Being a mod, i can say 2 to 4 people only, from Dream forum reports threads.
This isn't easy, especially with all new posters, not knowing better.
This is exactly why T-Mobile took Root away from the general public. LOL

But thats just it, theres no where to move the support posts too!
If there was a support section i would GLADLY start flagging the hell outta threads that need moving!! but currently there is no where to send them.
Whatcha think? otherwise if you can suggest where i should suggest these help posts to go i will happily start flagging them for you!
thanks

So whats the criteria for reqporting a thread?
what about something to weed out retarded people? It's getting really off topic like OMG JESUS FREAK and #$%^HELP&^%$#
I appreciate your hard work mods.......
I remember another forum ( i can't remember which) but when you clicked "new thread" it asked you for your subject first, then showed links to similar threads and a "continue with new thread" button. Is there anyway to implement that here. Seemed pretty helpful even after searching the forum.
Read the rules in my sig or opening threads will threads already open, for the Same topic
Here is another vote for a support forum.

quick question about updating cyanogen roms!

hey there i have cm 4.2.5 right now and i want to update to current. do i need to update 4.2.6-4.2.9 individually or just update with the newest rom? thanks guys
You can just apply the newest one

omg he created a new thread,,, lets beat him senseless,, dood grow up. lol. did you need to actually reply to this thread?
this is a user end question about a rom that already has a dedicated thread full of similar questions which is where they're meant to be. if every single question like this was asked in a new thread then no one would ever find the threads on roms and development that are the reason this forum exists. general user questions either go in the general sapphire forum or go in the existing threads. end of, move on.

You think with 9 posts under your belt it would mean your saving them for posting something useful....obviously I'm wrong!

He's right though. If people at least post redundant questions in the right thread, then they don't clutter up threads where they shouldn't have been asked at all.
It also makes it easier to find the answers if the questions aren't spread everywhere.
In this case, however, confusion easily arises when the Cyanogen thread is in the Dream forum and you own a Sapphire. Not immediately obvious where to ask relevant questions.
My own strategy is to provide a concise, clear, useful answer to the immediate question and also add ad vice about how to handle future questions. I don't really understand people who posting in response and neither help nor provide useful advice. That IS a waste of time.
wow was it really that big of a deal what a welcoming community
thanks to you guys that didnt give me **** and answered the simple question. I'll be more conscious of where i post next time

People, including me, are a little bit sensitive about the development forum. This probably should've gone in the Q&A section as its not directly development related...also the cyanogenmod wiki is a very good resource that it seems a lot of new users don't know about.
You shouldn't be afraid to ask questions and I apologize that it has become like that. This community really is amazing.
Google, read the wiki, read the thread, post in Q and A, hit up #cyanogenmod on freenode, etc. There is a ton of support available - maybe steer clear of the dev forum - it gets ugly, as you've seen.
Welcome to XDA

Suggestion for the board.

I see there isn't a suggestion section under the captivate and decided to post here so the developers are likely to see it. Though maybe the mods can implement it as well.
I was thinking that since us noobs can never find the questions that have been asked and answered do to the staggering number of posts in some of these threads; could download threads be locked and stickied but have a link to a Q&A thread on the topic, and a separate discussion thread that is labeled for posting by devs only? I know this is more threads and maybe I'm speaking nonsense but I see a lot of people get blown off, or better yet someone answers them only to tell them to search for the answer or just put people down. Like if you are gonna take the time and space on the board to say something to someone you can't give a link and a page number.
I know you guys are super helpful, but the board is hard to navigate because of the huge number of posts, I think a Q&A topic for each download topic with a link would keep the noobs out of your hair and questions could be answered by intermediate users and not make it hard for the busy devs to communicate amongst themselves.
What do you think?

Wrong section. This section is for develpment. Period.
I vote no. 90% of the time the first post is the info/download information, and the rest of the post is the "Q&A" section you want. And the other 10% of the time the information isn't in the first post because noobs aren't going to read an entire thread and the "release" is still in "oh crap this may break stuff".
I just think its cluttered and the lay person can't navigate and the knowledgeable people are unwilling to answer the same questions too many times (understandable).
My next suggestion is to have a suggestion section.

If people used the search function, they would find answers to already asked questions. Having stickie Q/A stuff to correspond to Dev stuff sounds nice, but no one will look for it - they don't look now and search works very well.
I thought I was speaking sense but obviously its not being received.
You don't need to sticky the qa just link to it and people will find it.
Searching is unreliable because that means the phrasing needs to be close.
But I'll just let this die.

[09/8/11] Updated Rules Of The Development Section **Please Read, Then Read Again**

I'll get straight to the point....
Despite stickys and forum announcements most of us are still finding ourselves becoming terribly, terribly vexed at the amount of [Q]'s cluttering the dev section...
Therefore, from now on, if you do not follow the rules outlined below, you will be infracted. Break them again and you may find yourself unable to post anything at all on any forum!!
[Q]Surely thats a bit harsh aint it??
[A]Not really....
We've tried to be nice about it but that clearly doesnt work.

If you cannot read and abide by the simple rules in this sticky then I dont know how you're going to manage to hack your device without running into trouble.
The Dev section is NOT for asking questions.....
The Dev section is NOT for general topics..........
All threads posted MUST be prefixed with a description of the thread, [ROM] / [Kernel] etc etc.....*
*(Not planning on being particuarly strict on this. You guys (the devs), know how to title a thread.... just a pointer for new devs.)
Basically, unless your thread is to actually release something or discuss something of a very technical and n00b unfriendly nature, it doesnt belong here!
Pretty simple really.....
If you see something that shouldnt be here then PM me....
I will try to check in as reguarly as I can but I have a few sections to keep an eye on and believe it or not, a life outside XDA
Yes thats right, there is life outside XDA
I moved all the stock Roms to the General Section in an effort to keep the Development forums for Developing roms.

The issues I see with this is 1: it causes fragmentation on where to find ROMs and 2: if the person who put out the ROM decides at a later date to start customizing beyond stock, it is then technically in the wrong section unless they create a new thread in development

I will be making a sticky with the links to the stock roms. And sense there really shouldnt be more then one thread for the stock release it will keep things a little cleaner. If they decide to make a custom rom off the stock then they are free to make a thread in the Dev section for the custom rom and its Development. This is the way it is done in the Captivate section that I came from and a few other devices and has worked out pretty well in keeping only Dev related things in the Dev section

Sounds good, thanks for the reply!
Ok guys I am in the process of making Q&A threads in the Q&A section for each rom. Please use these before opening new threads. In an effort to clean up the forums I will be removing out dated threads and cleaning things up. I am hoping this will reduce the clutter in the threads and will help new people find answers easier.
Oh I am so confused. LOL. You are the boss zelendel and I don't want to cross you anymore. So now we have QnA for each ROM, can we not post anything anymore in the Dev's thread? Most everything posted in a Dev's thread is a question of some sort. Can you add this, why did you do this, can you fix this, is this happening to anybody else, and so on.....
What are we allowed to post there? I mean it is so different than almost every other section here on the forum. Cross posters from other sections will continue to post as they always have. I don't want to come across as a dumb butt as I am not. I happen to be an admin and mod on 8 other phone forums. But not developer forums which this is. But to find a ROM I have to look in 2 different sections and ask questions about it in a third. How is this cleaning anything up?
The Q&A threads are for general ROM related questions like how do i flash this, ect. It also saves the kids from having to go around deleting the threads that are used to by pass the 10 post rule just so they can post a question in the dev section. The main ROM threads are for technical discussions. You can still post there but this will remove a lot of the junk from the dev threads.
I use this set up in the captivate section and it was well recieved by users and Developers alike. It kept the dev threads cleaned up and people still could ask their questions without needing 10 posts.
This is test run 2 of this set up. If it works out again then it just may become the norm. One thread to get the ROM and one for questions.

I have to agree this does not seem to make much sense. Instead of keeping all the rom threads together they will now be dispersed among the 4 sub-forums?
Why is the date in not American? I just had to point that out.
Was this really a problem that needed fixing? While yes there were a lot of stupid questions at times, the open discussion about the ROM performance, tips, tweaks, and problems leads to many people who aren't in the development process sharing information with each other and the developers, and leads to everyone being able to help each other figure things out. Now it just seems like people are going to be confused as to where to talk about the ROM, as all the information will be fragmented now. It would make more sense to just rename the Dev section to something like "ROM Development And Discussion" and create a new section with limited access threads that would be like a ROM library and newsletter. That way, one could go there to get the latest downloads and information, and still be able to get help and discuss the ROM in the same place they always have. Of course, this is just my opinion, did you ever think about starting a discussion with everyone to get ideas and opinions on how things should be sorted?
And IMHO, phrases like "Iron Fist" and "only gonna ask once" aren't a quality examples of good people skills. Maybe something like, I dunno, asking someone to make changes to facilitate the move to a new format might work better.
Thank you this was a helpful post, im use to ROM with windows phone new to android

Everyone Please READ

Hey! So recently I have seen a rather large influx of people doing dumb things without first searching! So far I've encountered a couple people who are upset they bricked their phones, even though a warning was put out to not fkz back from ICS. I have also seen many people posting in the dev section just asking for help. YOU SHOULD ONLY POST IN THE DEV SECTION ONLY IF YOU MADE SOMETHING (ie. a ROM). Please don't post there asking for help or posting screenshots. Sorry but this has been pissing me of a little lately.
PLEASE try to keep this forum clean, and make the job for our mods easier!
From now on, we need to just start directing people to my sticky in these situations, and not post any help until they follow the rules.
Here is my sticky:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1778853
Then report them to the MODS, I have been told by both of our mods that they are on the developers sides and try to helps us out with any of these type of things, since this is a site really for developers and a way for us to get our work out to the public, so to speak.
Thanks! I shall do that. It's just been pissing me off that everyday new threads would come up about people bricking their phones. And they would pop up in the dev section too!
Agreed.

Yeah I feel your pain, and that is why I posted the sticky, I was seeing these things even before the bricks started. It has gotten so out of hand here, even with all the "when is ICS coming" new threads 2 or three a day. Heck now we have the leak and it not good enough, so they brick their phone even after all the warnings... I am starting to think that no one reads anything on here, and just posts a new thread for whatever they want to.
Jim, et. al.,
Since I have been traveling like a freaking gypsy for work these last two weeks, with another two more ahead of me, I was unable to PM all the Senior Members here with what you and I discussed last week. In lieu of all that, I'll take it upon myself to do what I had intended last week right here.
Because people (n00bs, primarily) can't search or post questions or concerns in threads that have already been established for certain topics -ICS leak topics mostly, I'm calling all Members and Senior Members together for this:
If we continue to see a handful of new threads made for topics already in discussion, we need ONLY to reply with the link to Jim's sticky, as well as the existing thread(s) that relate to new 'extraneous' ones. Nothing else, no replies to entertain any quandaries or concerns.
This was my concern with the leak coning out, and it has been substantiated with several threads posted that are clogging up this forum. I cannot stress enough the imperativeness of SEARCHING BEFORE POSTING NEW THREADS, and have already made reports to the moderators of people not following the rules. I'm doing that with the risk of looking like a total prick, but also with the hopes that people here will get the picture.
So, if we all join forces and take these threads with the same approach, it might just work. Albeit, there will always be those who will insist on being dumber than a bag if smashed a**holes, we still may get lucky and see some improvement...

I'll be relying with links to jims sticky, jrws noob thread, and farshads do not flash fxz post. That should cover it all lol.

I hate to seem like we're all "ganging up" on these guys, but it really has gotten way out of hand. So, n00bs and Junior Members (and even Members) if/when you read this, understand where we are all coming from. This isn't "my" forum or "your" forum, its "our" forum, and there are rules in place for everyone's benefit. Since the ICS leak, we've gotten more than a little frustrated with people wildly avoiding heeded caution, and squawking about the forum with a desperate cry for help by posting new (needless) threads. You'll get the very same degree of help if you post correctly, and avoid being set on fire...

This has been going on for awhile now with people posting in the wrong section or people asking repeated questions. People just don't get it or they just don't care. It seems to be getting worse. I don't think there is going to be a real fix on this. I hope this thread will help though.
