[09/8/11] Updated Rules Of The Development Section **Please Read, Then Read Again** - HTC Inspire 4G

I'll get straight to the point....
Despite stickys and forum announcements most of us are still finding ourselves becoming terribly, terribly vexed at the amount of [Q]'s cluttering the dev section...
Therefore, from now on, if you do not follow the rules outlined below, you will be infracted. Break them again and you may find yourself unable to post anything at all on any forum!!
[Q]Surely thats a bit harsh aint it??
[A]Not really....
We've tried to be nice about it but that clearly doesnt work.

If you cannot read and abide by the simple rules in this sticky then I dont know how you're going to manage to hack your device without running into trouble.
The Dev section is NOT for asking questions.....
The Dev section is NOT for general topics..........
All threads posted MUST be prefixed with a description of the thread, [ROM] / [Kernel] etc etc.....*
*(Not planning on being particuarly strict on this. You guys (the devs), know how to title a thread.... just a pointer for new devs.)
Basically, unless your thread is to actually release something or discuss something of a very technical and n00b unfriendly nature, it doesnt belong here!
Pretty simple really.....
If you see something that shouldnt be here then PM me....
I will try to check in as reguarly as I can but I have a few sections to keep an eye on and believe it or not, a life outside XDA
Yes thats right, there is life outside XDA

I moved all the stock Roms to the General Section in an effort to keep the Development forums for Developing roms.

The issues I see with this is 1: it causes fragmentation on where to find ROMs and 2: if the person who put out the ROM decides at a later date to start customizing beyond stock, it is then technically in the wrong section unless they create a new thread in development

I will be making a sticky with the links to the stock roms. And sense there really shouldnt be more then one thread for the stock release it will keep things a little cleaner. If they decide to make a custom rom off the stock then they are free to make a thread in the Dev section for the custom rom and its Development. This is the way it is done in the Captivate section that I came from and a few other devices and has worked out pretty well in keeping only Dev related things in the Dev section

Sounds good, thanks for the reply!

Ok guys I am in the process of making Q&A threads in the Q&A section for each rom. Please use these before opening new threads. In an effort to clean up the forums I will be removing out dated threads and cleaning things up. I am hoping this will reduce the clutter in the threads and will help new people find answers easier.

Oh I am so confused. LOL. You are the boss zelendel and I don't want to cross you anymore. So now we have QnA for each ROM, can we not post anything anymore in the Dev's thread? Most everything posted in a Dev's thread is a question of some sort. Can you add this, why did you do this, can you fix this, is this happening to anybody else, and so on.....
What are we allowed to post there? I mean it is so different than almost every other section here on the forum. Cross posters from other sections will continue to post as they always have. I don't want to come across as a dumb butt as I am not. I happen to be an admin and mod on 8 other phone forums. But not developer forums which this is. But to find a ROM I have to look in 2 different sections and ask questions about it in a third. How is this cleaning anything up?

The Q&A threads are for general ROM related questions like how do i flash this, ect. It also saves the kids from having to go around deleting the threads that are used to by pass the 10 post rule just so they can post a question in the dev section. The main ROM threads are for technical discussions. You can still post there but this will remove a lot of the junk from the dev threads.
I use this set up in the captivate section and it was well recieved by users and Developers alike. It kept the dev threads cleaned up and people still could ask their questions without needing 10 posts.
This is test run 2 of this set up. If it works out again then it just may become the norm. One thread to get the ROM and one for questions.

Sorry dude but that is not organized at all the post will get lost you should keep all ROM's and posting related to said ROM together. And I was on the Captivate forum didn't work there either IMO..

I have to agree this does not seem to make much sense. Instead of keeping all the rom threads together they will now be dispersed among the 4 sub-forums?

Why is the date in not American? I just had to point that out.

Was this really a problem that needed fixing? While yes there were a lot of stupid questions at times, the open discussion about the ROM performance, tips, tweaks, and problems leads to many people who aren't in the development process sharing information with each other and the developers, and leads to everyone being able to help each other figure things out. Now it just seems like people are going to be confused as to where to talk about the ROM, as all the information will be fragmented now. It would make more sense to just rename the Dev section to something like "ROM Development And Discussion" and create a new section with limited access threads that would be like a ROM library and newsletter. That way, one could go there to get the latest downloads and information, and still be able to get help and discuss the ROM in the same place they always have. Of course, this is just my opinion, did you ever think about starting a discussion with everyone to get ideas and opinions on how things should be sorted?
And IMHO, phrases like "Iron Fist" and "only gonna ask once" aren't a quality examples of good people skills. Maybe something like, I dunno, asking someone to make changes to facilitate the move to a new format might work better.

Thank you this was a helpful post, im use to ROM with windows phone new to android

Vote to Create a Seperate Forum Section for Firmware Mods

Ok we all know firmware mods are popular, and we have been seeing many many questions about the sapphire/JF mods that would be better organized in a separate forum like xda-developers > Dream > Firmware Hacking & Modification
So place your vote above and post any comments/ideas you may have.
Don't see the need for it. Besides similar requests have been asked for before and shot down.
yeah i dont think its necessary either, plus mods have enough work on food on there plate, i think it looks messy because of the redundant threads
No, it's not needed But.... we need threads to be closed after a major release of a newer build
(ie H 5.03) and open a new thread. Thats what folks do in the WM rom threads elsewhere in this forum. Closing and locking thread but not deleting will keep them from growing to a gigantic size like the sapphire/magic rom port thread. But its up to the thread creator to do so...
Is it really that big of an endeavor to add a subforum for firmware mods?

I'd imagine not, but apparently moderators cannot make site changes. Only the administrator (Flar) can do that.
Meanwhile, many of the knowledgeable members (Don't see JF or Koush around much these days?) of the forum get tired of reading the same "omg i ruined my apps-to-sd" or "how i get haykuro install" and stop reading the forum. Win-win for everyone?
Not needed being there's only 4-5 of them out there...
If there was anything, I would say a sub-forum of the theme section for themes ONLY. No questions etc...

quick question about updating cyanogen roms!

hey there i have cm 4.2.5 right now and i want to update to current. do i need to update 4.2.6-4.2.9 individually or just update with the newest rom? thanks guys
You can just apply the newest one
this couldn't have gone in the existing cyanogen thread?

omg he created a new thread,,, lets beat him senseless,, dood grow up. lol. did you need to actually reply to this thread?
this is a user end question about a rom that already has a dedicated thread full of similar questions which is where they're meant to be. if every single question like this was asked in a new thread then no one would ever find the threads on roms and development that are the reason this forum exists. general user questions either go in the general sapphire forum or go in the existing threads. end of, move on.

You think with 9 posts under your belt it would mean your saving them for posting something useful....obviously I'm wrong!

He's right though. If people at least post redundant questions in the right thread, then they don't clutter up threads where they shouldn't have been asked at all.
It also makes it easier to find the answers if the questions aren't spread everywhere.
In this case, however, confusion easily arises when the Cyanogen thread is in the Dream forum and you own a Sapphire. Not immediately obvious where to ask relevant questions.
My own strategy is to provide a concise, clear, useful answer to the immediate question and also add ad vice about how to handle future questions. I don't really understand people who posting in response and neither help nor provide useful advice. That IS a waste of time.
wow was it really that big of a deal what a welcoming community
thanks to you guys that didnt give me **** and answered the simple question. I'll be more conscious of where i post next time

People, including me, are a little bit sensitive about the development forum. This probably should've gone in the Q&A section as its not directly development related...also the cyanogenmod wiki is a very good resource that it seems a lot of new users don't know about.
You shouldn't be afraid to ask questions and I apologize that it has become like that. This community really is amazing.
Google, read the wiki, read the thread, post in Q and A, hit up #cyanogenmod on freenode, etc. There is a ton of support available - maybe steer clear of the dev forum - it gets ugly, as you've seen.
Welcome to XDA

Rewarding stupidity?

t1mm0, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:
Please Read: New members (those with fewer than 10 posts) are not permitted to post to development-related forums.

I've been visiting XDA for many years and always find the answers to my questions via searching rather than posting questions.
I've therefore never had the requirement to post in the development section but I do now regarding ICS RC4.
I realize that there are many users who never search and *do* post stupid questions but is there any way for someone like myself to skip the 10 posts?
This isn't perhaps the best titled thread but I kinda feel like this since I'll have to post another 8 stupid threads before I can get to the folk who may know the answer to my question.
If you want to post a question about something related to a ROM, try looking in the Q&A section for the ROM you're using. You can post there without the 10-post limit, and unless you're bringing up a specific bug or have some sort of code to contribute to the item you would be posting under, that section should be able to handle whatever you would need.
New users should really read this I suppose.
I know it makes sense. I just needs an answer quickly

If the Q&A isn't getting you where you need to be, you could always try the waters of sending the developer in question a PM. Depending on how swamped they are, you might get the answer you're needing a lot quicker.
It's really a stupid rule. What it should be, is 50 posts to make a thread in the dev section.
Sent from my SGH-I897
I can see the objective of it the rule but yes, 50 posts to start a new thread in the Dev section would make more sense to me.
Agreed. I lurk, learn, and do. And I'm grateful to those who do develop on this platform. But I can't participate because I haven't passed the magic 10-post rule.
And I'm a software developer (not Android) by trade, so I understand what facilitates discussion and what does not, and I have a pretty good idea what are reasonable questions and what aren't.
The purpose of the Dev section is to post about developing not questions that is what the q&a or general

There are specific threads set up in Q&A for most of the ROMs, including ICSSGS RC 4. Post there and you'll be read, and most likely answered.

To Quell Some of the Confusion

I just wanted to quell some of the confusion Reguarding Topics , What goes into the Dev section, General Section Q N A etc.
Development section,
Roms Tweaks Kernels
What the dev's truly want in there threads is this Bug Tracking Logcat's (minus your personal info Please prune the logcat or expunge your personal info and Imei number if its listed)
These threads are For development.
General section pretty much anything goes normally its a off topic discussion thread.
Q N A section
This is where Ultimately And the mods do try there best to Migrate posts to this.
This Sub fourm is what its actually intended for Simple questions like Do i need to flash this or wipe that what are the mounts so on so forth those do not belong in the Dev threads..
Also most Mods normally stick guides in there How to use a rom kitchen so on so forth..
Themes sub fourm
As applicable questions regarding how to theme a rom or how to modify status bars etc..
Normally also includes other peoples themes so on so forth etc...
I know this is just a simple synapse as to the general layout and i am in no means the mod of the sgs4g section of xda. But Generally thats what the fourm layout is for..
@Raver
+1
+1 raver
i remem once upon a time i made a thread like this and got my ass flamed, i agree with you 100% im just saying be prepared to get flamed by the assholes
The only thing I see missing is a guide to people creating stuff in the Dev section. Like starting a q&a thread once you release a [dev][rom][tweak] or the likes. Making sure its linked in the op of your thread.
I mention this because people are more likely to post questions in a q&a thread started by the dev then little billy that has 3 posts and never posts again. Plus if a dev starts it people will think since he started it he is monitoring it.

Living with ICS OTA - tweaks and tricks thread

Before I get chastised by overzealous members for posting in the dev forum, please keep in mind that activity here is minimal hence my assertion that new ROMs are not coming up and most users are content with the ICS OTA firmware, and this is where the "development" attention should focus at this time. I am wonder if we can create a comprehensive thread containing all know tweaks to ICS OTA here?
I am indeed on ICS OTA and trying to live with it I am tweaking it through build.prop and by removing some MOTO bloatware especially these showing heavy battery usage. A snapshot of my/system/app is included and build.prop will follow
I successfully renamed several of blur files rendering them unusable but wonder if there is a list of files that are safe to remove and which do not cause system instability and unnecessary dev log errors.
My objective is a stable and functional system with a working webtop.
Can anybody chime in on the subject?
Hey you made a similar post here a few days ago..and again you post in the dev section..why cant you post in general section??..i am not trying to be a jerk but if one person breaks the rules repeatedly others will also follow..and the whole forum will be a mess..mr jimbridgman u aint seein this??

There are virtually no posts here and no development activity... its not like this forum is drowning in posts. I posted in the dev section hoping we can can start something to make the ICS OTA more usable. Maybe some devs can chime in as well. I also didn't want to post in the Q&A forum where the most lively thread discusses which phone ATRIX 2 users will get next... C'mon. Give me a break, its like a cemetary here, I haven't seen anything like this since I joined this forum in 2005... any activity is good here...
This does not belong in the dev forum. No matter how "dead" you think it is in here.
The dev forum is only for developers to post works they created.
I will be reporting this to the mods when I get to a computer.
duchski, please refrain from posting in the dev section unless you actually have something you have developed. Discussions belong in the general section. There is a reason you have not seen a post like this in here, because it does not belong in the dev section.
