intermittent data problem - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Have any of you guys had a problem with data not working, like when you open your browser and it cant connect? I just started experiencing this. What I have been seeing is the browser will not connect, but I still have full bars and 4G icon. So I hit the refresh button on Chrome right away, and it connects. One time, this morning, it wouldnt connect at all, so I hit airplane mode, on then off, and it instantly connected again. This has happened yesterday and today. Im on Straight Talk, using RUXLF3 modem(just switched to UCLF6 to test...doing same thing).
Heading to bed, ill check back tomorrow. Thanks.

I also have the same problem and I have the same setup. I think this is an ST issue since my daughter's atrix on ST is also having the same intermittent data connections. We also observed it since this morning.

Thanks. Its definitely a Straight Talk issue. Talked to some folks via PM on Howard forums and some are getting throttled, some experiencing "glitches" such as you and I. Thanks again.

keep an update on this, I'm interested in possibly switching to straight talk pending if the new iphone isnt compatible with tmobile since my local carriers uses their frequencies. Savings with straight talk would be nice, although I can jump to any other carrier and use the discounts below
Discounts
Sprint 22%
verizon 23%
at&t 23%

I have Straing Talk for two months. The data connection was good at the beginning. But I cannot connect to the internet or it's very slow since two weeks ago. Based on my research online, there are many other consumers have the same issues. I am in NJ. I am thinking to switch to other carriers if the problem is not fixed soon.

I have the same data issue as others on straight talk. When it hangs I just uncheck use packet data then recheck it and that gets data back online.

I check in here too ... Exact same problem with data not working all of a sudden .. I was thinking apn settings at first ; data proxy or no proxy ... but today happened either way !!! ...

Bummer, I am in central Ohio, and I was thinking of switching from ATT to ST BYOS with their ATT sim.
I am curious to see how this unfolds.
It sounds like flashing a tmobile radio and going to tmobile flat rate experiences intermittant data issues too?

No 4G or even 2G Data Connection(updated:Problem Solved See Post 49)

Turned off wifi to see if I could run a speedtest and found that data stopped working on the phone. Went to live chat with a tmo rep and they told me to upgrade to the new "android" plan. I told them data is data and they agreed but also mentioned that in the past 3 months they have been testing out 4g throughout the US and what happens is that the towers will see what data plan I am using and the type of phone and once they see the report back the towers will then disconnect me from receiving data because I do not have a "compatible" data plan.
Any thoughts?
My current set up is that running the phone test...(*#*#4636#*#*) I have the settings as WCDMA only and that matches the settings under the mobile network settings as well, with Enable always on mobile data checked on.
EDIT: Long story short, you need an "universal" plan or the stated android plans out right now. Any older non-android plans will eventually stop working when the IMEI's are checked with the data plan on file. However, be nice and the rep will work with you in getting you straight. For me, my data now works and no cost increase.
What data plan did you have?
I still have the unlimited data with 400 texts for 24.99/mo.
This worked for my N1 so I was wondering why this just stopped working?
same here in houston shows 4g but internet or gps dont work! WTF t-mobile
and also this worked with my mytouch and hd2 and was working with my sensation for a week now!!
I have the exact same problem, and this happened right after I received my message that my new month has started. I have the old Fav5 w/ 300 minutes, unlimited data and 400 text. Haven't called T-Mobile about it yet, because I first wanted to call and ask for the unlocking of my HD2.
They obviously want us to pay more for the 4G.
Ditto

I even paid full price for the phone, so I didn't have to change my plan. They told me at the store that I have 30 days to return the phone, with a $50 charge if I do return it.

I have the same plan.
G1 myFaves 300 + unlimited data/400 texts.
I ordered my phone through Amazon and it made me switch plans though... Arrives on Tuesday.
Has anyone been able to keep their old unlimited data plan and still have the Sensation work?
So far it seems like a 100% certainty it's not possible.
I'm thinking it's a data outage. I'm in Phoenix & rocking the old school Total Internet plan & some buddies are in El Paso, TX & all of our data isn't working. 1 since this morning & mine for the last 30 minutes.

Yes I was able to keep my $25 unlimited android plan from the G1 days. I had data issues at first. I did a factory reset and changed my phone on mytmobile.com to the sensation. My data has worked perfectly since.
I'm not sure if it was the reset, changing my phone to the sensation, or both.
I would suggest trying that if you have problems.
Just like the OP I had no problems with my N1 either.

On the phone with customer care
Automated system stated there is a problem with data in my area. I am going to speak with a rep to see if they have any additional information.
I live in El Paso, Tx and I started having this problem around 10 am. I have 2 bars of 4g and my data is not working at all.
Trouble Ticket submitted
Got off the phone with Tmo customer care. As I stated earlier, data is not working for our types of phones. This data issue does not only affect the Sensation, but other phones that have 4g data as well.
The rep gathered information like my IMEI and my address to record a trouble ticket. We even tried gsm only (2g) to see if data worked, and it did not. She thinks it is a compatability issue. Someone here probably *****ed about the 4g speed and climbed a tower to get a better speedtest reading lol....
The rep gave me a trouble ticket and said that she would call me back by Monday the latest in regards to an answer/resolution to this data issue. I also stated to her that others in other states are having similar issues, but the rep only was concerned about my area and my service in particular. Sorry I tried to get more of a word on, at least a national scale in regards to this issue.
Well I guess WIFI connection it is....

[Q] Please Help - Slow data speed on S4G-TMO

I am in Houston, Zip code 77057
I need some help regarding data speed on my Sensation. I only get about 85 kbps download at my home. I have all 4 Bars and 4G logo all the time. But somehow I never get above 85 kbps. I have try all possible fix I could found on XDA (Thanks XDA) , like removing Plastic case I am using toggling ciphering, which seems to help lot of people here , but no go for me .
I have been in contact with TMO from last 3 days regarding this. i used my land line to call TMO so we can troubleshoot the issue on Sensation. Very first time I called TMO , She have me remove the battery and SIM card form the phone. At the same time she setup something in her system and asked me to put SIM, battery back and turn on the phone. When I turn on the phone again, I got amazing 3Mbps speed (at Home). I thought speed problem got resolved. But next morning it went back to 85 kbps.
I called 2nd time yesterday, this time I was on the phone for like 45 min, first she checked my data plan(I have unlimited data), the we checked on SIM card (I am using New SIM came with the Phone) but nothing worked. The she wrote a ticket for technician to go and check tower. She promised to call me next day. I also told her that previous Rep did something in TMO system which got me 3 Mbps speed. she told me that Previous rep must have fixed my Phone to a single Tower and when i left the area Phone lost the connection and picked up the nearest tower to my home. (useless solution)
Today I did not see any speed improvement, When TMO rep called I told her no Improvement and I am still on same Slow 85kbps (with 4 bars and 4G). she will have technician go one more time tomorrow and have technician call me directly.
This is so frustrating, I am tired of this thing. I like the sensation but lousy data speed is spoiling the fun. I am seriously considering leaving TMO.
Any thoughts ??

Have you tried selecting wcdma only? I am not sure if that will work or not but worth a shot. It kinda sounds like the network has your account/phone throttled as that is right around the speeds I get when I am. Keep calling tmobile, I know its a pain in the a$$ but it sounds like a problem on thier side. When I had a problem last week (no 4g service at all in my house) they tried to tell me I was not in a 4g area. I had to call back to get a different rep because the previous one just wasn't listening to what I was saying. They ended up having the completely wrong address that had them looking at towers 5 hrs away from me.

I have the same problem here in Stockton Ca. The rep at tmo never got back to me after 1 week so i called back. Rep oppened another ticket and promised to get back to me within a couple of days... No call after 1 week. When I called the third time complaining they said they didn't call me back because the slow data was a software issue and had nothing to do with T-Mobile, so I should wait for an update from HTC. Then after mentioning I was thinking of switching to Verizon they switched me over to customer loyalty, who immediately offered to cancel my account for me. Where is this great customer service I hear about?

Same here... LTE is dead and 4G is cutting in and out.
Tried several different radios and get the same result.
One of my friends in Florida texted me awhile ago complaining about LTE cutting in and out. Apparently it was just a fluke. My LTE here in Indiana is fine.
My LTE here in Dallas is horrible right now. I can't even run a speed test on it.
I have restarted phone, shut down, even battery pulled and nothing.

Conway, AR here... I'm having terrible connectivity on HSPA+. I was actually about to change my radio. I'm using the note radio but until today I never had a problem with it. seems like I'm not the only one with issues.
Call AT&T and get added to the problem list. The more people who report it, the higher the severity it gets and the more people they assign to fix it.
Been on the phone with them for 45 minutes. They reset their end. had me check my apn's (fine of course), factory reset (pain in the a$$), and now they told me I can stop by a store and get a new sim card. They claim to have no issues in the area. kinda a pain really!
*by lack of connectivity pretty much I cant access any webpages. not even sure if I can get an mms.. kinda sucks. I doubt it has to do with the note modem I have been using. I'm flashing the new leaks modem UCLD2 to see if that helps.
Similar as above, woke up and data was being ridiculous. Full signal with LTE but I had no data service. Couldn't MMS, surf, etc.

I would not have done a factory reset cause that has nothing to do with it. If your service was fine yesterday and is crap today, it's their network.

Curious what radio and rom are you using? I find it odd that we are all having connectivity issues. They told me they don't have any problems with the network in my area.
Yeah I'm in Dallas and LTE is barley functioning. Took about 20 minutes to get to this thread (oh how I wish I was exaggerating). I don't even want to guess how long its gonna take to post this once I'm done typing xD

Ok, so here's what I did...
When I started having the issues this morning I was on NexusMod Beta 3 with the UCLC5 modem. I then downloaded the new modem UCLD2 and flashed it... Still no good. so I called AT&T (see brief post above)... then I figured I'd try a new rom. I downloaded the new Sky ICS UCLD2 base followed the instructions there (even reflashed the UCLD2 modem). Still no luck so I reflashed the UCLC5 modem. Now I have connectivity again. I'm going to be watching it closely over the next few hours. Not sure if this will help anyone but It's so far working for me.
My friend at AT&T just texted me, issue resolved.

Have to turn off mobile data 2-3 times a day

I have had internet connectivity issues that get cleared up immediatley after i disable mobile data and then re-enable.
It happens when i am in a solid 4g area sitting in the same place surfing the web and my data will just die. and it comes back right up after i disable and re-enable my mobile data.
it also happens when im on the bus going back and forth between 3g and 4g.
is this a normal droid charge issue?
seems like it craps out after about 10 min of surfing every time i remember it happening.
i had this happen when i was stock, after i rooted stock, and now on tweek 2.0
Had that issue yesterday on 4G, and it cleared up the same evening. Occasionally will lose data connectivity on 4G, even with it's still showing the connection. It's not very frequent or consistent, and it seems to have gotten better over time. There is definitely some flakiness on the radios on the Charge. A friend was sitting right next to me on his Spectrum yesterday and wasn't having any issues. I think it's likely related to Verizon network, but I think some phones are more sensitive to it than others.
Yeah, happens to me too. I had to disable/re-enable data at least twice today. :/

hmm.. i did have a few sim issues when i got the phone a week ago, after loading a rom the phone said there was no sim inserted or there was a sim error cant remember which.
maybe swap the sim tomorrow to see if that helps.
sounds like it might be a charge radio issue... i am getting what ever killer phone comes out in a few months anyway. Galaxy s3? HTC one X ? Galaxy Journal ?
Motorola hd ?
re
So i got a new sim..
Nothing has changed.
I have netflix and live in a great 4g area and still have to toggle off data 2-3 times a morning on my bus trip into seattle.
It seems like the radio has a hard time figuring out wtf to do once it comes in and out of 4g. I can be sitting at in traffic for 5 min with no signal and flipping the data on and then off... BAM 4g is back.
This makes for annoying netflix / IT Crowd, viewing.
I am glad that i got this phone as a temp solution cheap from craigslist. Motorola Droid fighter or Galaxy S3 will be putting this lump of mediocre electronics to rest in the next month or so.
What radio is installed on your phone? To find this out go to settings/about phone. The baseband version would be your radio. If it says i510.06V.FP1, that means you are on the most up to date radio. I had similar issues before I updated to FP1 but since then, the 3 or 4G has been very quick to connect and stays reliable all day.
One of my buds works for Vzw and he told me that the 4g network is great when it works. In some places vzw is activating 4g network before the network is ready to be deployed. They are doing this because competition has more 4g coverage.
One solution is to set your phone to 3g only and accept reliable slow sppeds or deal with crappy 4g. Eventually vzw will get it right. Wjen though, is anybody's guess.

[Q] LTE not working

Hi, I just got my S5 today and have been having quite a few problems. First one was that Best Buy forgot a step: activating my device... They're so incompetent... lol
So anyway, after multiple talk with Sprint I now have everything working but LTE. My S3 could pick up the LTE network when I was home this morning, but my S5 can't seem to ever connect to LTE. Of course I went to check the settings and the option CDMA/LTE is selected.
Anyone has any suggestion?
Thanks,
- Cascius
Not sure what's going on but my S4 signal was 10x's better... My daughter now uses it and she has full lte service and I'm barely picking up 3G... Contacted sprint and they are telling me to bring it in for possibly a defective antenna...

Hmmm... I'm connecting just fine. If you're having trouble with LTE in an area you know had it, try update PRL/Profile firstly. See if thatfoxes. If not, I would highly recommend just Factory Wipe and Wipe Cache since still early before development goes underway. Easy to reset up. I did and seemed to clear up any and all my issues at first.
I have not been able to connect to LTE either. After a reboot, it says LTE but then the antenna turns off and comes back on in 3G. If I go into the Sprint Zone app and try to test the 4G, it tells me to turn it on in the settings and never does a test. My wife's current S3 has no problem with LTE and the Sprint Zone test of 4G seems to work. I plan on going to a local store today and see about the problem.
I tried a data reset, cache wipe, PRL/profile update and no improvements.
It's a network issue with your area. This was a big problem for me when the nexus 5 came out. It's because of the new tri-band devices and sprints network not being updated. There is a a big article about it on s4gru. Trust me it's not your phone. That's why it connects to Lte for a split second and then goes to 3g. U just have to wait for sprint to update the towers in your area

no clue
at least you know its not your phone, and rather it is a network issue
Alright here's an update on my end: I get LTE in some areas, but not others (even though my S3 did)
- San Francisco: No luck in any neighborhood i tried... (PS I live in SF so this really isn't good)
- Napa (and highway 80 on the way there): LTE signal most of the way. (only 2-3 bars most of the time, but still, LTE!)
- Mountain View (where i work): LTE with full bars.
My take so far: the problem doesn't come from our phones but rather from the status of those towers. The fact that Napa's network would be better than SF is extremely surprising and disappointing to me to say the least.
Now here are a couple questions:
On my S3, doing update PRL or Profile would have a confirmation/successful popup. On the S5, it just shows a quick "Initializing application" and nothing happens. Are you guys also having the same issue?
Anyway, those are my findings so far. I've been a loyal Sprint customer since 1999, and at this point I might return the phone and cancel my contract in favor for Tmobile or ATT...
Oh well...

Oh well...

yeah i am getting really upset with sprint too, been with them since 2001, i like my plan, but i have the same results as you in the same areas, no luck in San Fran, oakland, or dublin, tempted to go to verizon but i dunno, i like the unlimited data... but if i am gonna be stuck in 3G then there is no use
and the prl update should still have the conformation screen, i get it on mine

Oooooh, thanks for the PRL information. I think a recovery is indeed needed. I also forgot to mention that I keep getting a notification that there is a software update. When I click nothing happens... Then i go to settings, system update, and i get a message saying I'm up to date... Pfff... LOL
Regarding switching to Verizon: don't! With work I had an iPhone 5 on Verizon and it was actually worse than Sprint. (At least in the Bay Area)
We now have upgraded to iPhone 5S on ATT and it's definitely better. I've read that TMobile is pretty good too, but have no experience of my own.
Anyway, on a positive note: my S5 is much more responsive than my S3 and the screen brightness is awesome! I was just outside in the sun and could read emails with no problems. The camera is also a nice upgrade as the S3's camera was horrible. Aside from that it really feels like a nice incremental upgrade, but nothing more.
I'll post an update tonight after recovering etc...

Ok, I have been in Oakland for a few hours now, 3g the whole time, I cycled airplane mode, and now am on LTE for the last 10 min, so it seems like it isn't trying to search for lte after the initial time?
I have the same situation here. LTE only stays for a few minutes and then goes to sleep until it decides to wake up (whenever it feels like). I don't think speaking to Sprint will solve anything. It will be a while before we can see Spark in action, I think.
The problems lie with Sprint Spark. My S4 & Note 3 have great reception. All spark devices i activate barely get 1 bar. Its horrible. But its because of the bands they have the devices default on. They are trying to take less strain off of the current LTE single band and equal it out to all 3. Or just the 2 depending on your location.
This isn't a phone issue, rather a Network issue
