Which Rom is better for Samsung Galaxy S3? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Beans or Synergy?

Tried both, really comes down to personal preference. Do you want to deal with the workaround to have a custom kernel or do you want to keep the stock? Both are quite good, it's really up to you.

thanks for the quick reply

I am still kind of new to this but when I feel confident enough I would like to install custom kernels.

Then you might want to start with synergy. Once rooted it's quite easy to install one with a custom thanks to the great devs. Read up and be aware of the IMEI issue but that's only with CM based ROMs. I'd back it up just in case anyway.

OK so i installed synergy and I am pretty sure I did it correctly. Everything is still there and when I go to settings>about device the build number is synergyROm v1.4.

Neither. Stock.

you did it right!

Next is flashing a kernel! I'm doing that now on synergy's 1.3.
Side note though I noticed you have 1.4 apparently the kernel's that people were using for 1.3 aren't working with 1.4 so read up on that before you try! Good luck in the future!

Yes be careful flashing imos kernel on synergy 1.4 because it seems almost all threads I have read report having bootloop issues. It is recommended to flash imos kernel on synergy 1.3 Instead. Imos kernel is built into beans newest version and you can also overclock on beans. I'm personally on synergy v1.4 cause I like the brightness adjustment in the drop down drawer.

It should be noted that if you install BusyBox from the play store than imo's kernel works on 1.4. I'm running it right now and it's working great.

Kb1 kernels?

Sorry people but Im still a Noob.... Dumb question time.
I'm Running the stock FROYO 2.2 and was wondering if I could flash any KB1 kernel on it?
For ex:
[KERNEL] stock+Voodoo stable 5.x for Captivate
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=870760
[KB1]eXistZ Captivate Kernel #8[28MAR][Voodoo Sound 7, Lagfix & Color][OC/UV]
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=988805
[KERNEL][KB1]OverStock v1.2 341MB, Voodoo Sound, Color, Lagfix, BLN 3/23/2011
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=989298
And if so, What would be a stable, reliable Kernel? Thanks
Some more info on my phone: Baseband version= I897UCKB1
Build number= FROYO.UCKB1

Are you stock stock? lagfix? rooted?
Those will all work. being stock the first kernal you flash will have to be a .tar version with the full version of Odin (ensure you have 3 button combo)
My current favorite is Onix. Works great and is very stable. Plus it add UV and OC features. AND gets updates all the time.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=930679 flash the .tar from here, for Onix
Then flash an i9000 modem.
Yup, I'm runnin stock, rooted and have the supercurio voodoo lagfix kernel. But I'm lookin for somthin different that might speed up my phone... I've never done any OC/UV so I'm not to worried about that that much haha
Thanks man

That kernel has clockwork.........so you don't need to use a .tar version.
Use the CWM versions put to the root of your SD and flash with clockwork Recovery
Even if your not into OC/UV the kernal is still great at stock settings.
So its as easy as flashing from CWM?

Sure is.

Oh and the onix kernel is an i9000 based kernel. Does that matter at all if I'm runnin a kb1 modem? Cuz I've been reading that we shouldn't mix kernels

Its a reoriented I9000 kernal to work on our captivates.
As is Speed mod and a few others.
Aahh so it wont really matter?

As long as it says its for android 2.2 your good.
Just which ever one you choose make sure you get a modem that matches and your good!

edit: Sorry, I re-read your last question.
If you choose to run an I9000 kernel then you need to match an I9000 modem to it.
They are a simple CWM flash as well. there is a thread on here somewhere with all the current 2.1,2.2 and I9000 modems in it. Just do a search
Here is the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=835272

I have read that others have done it with little success. Any reason why you are holding back from just flashing a full ROM. You are almost there and quite frankly, I think you are safer going with a prepacked ROM over putting pieces together on your own. If you are comfortable with rooting and CWM then you have nothing more to learn to do a full ROM flash. I have never looked back since I first flashed. I've tried several and would say my favorites so far are Serendipity and FireFly. If you want to stay more Stock like, Cognition is also really great stuff.
Ok thanks guys.... Ill look into that

Even with the prepacked roms most people do not leave them alone, and mod and change the guts of them to their taste.
I don't see how learning to change things one part at a time is a bad thing, as you learn how everything works together, and will have a better understanding of it as a whole.
That's true.... but ill look into a rom haha.... hopefully I don't become an addict haha jk

+1
Get something designed to work together first. That gives you an easy start and stability out of the box.
After that, and after making a backup (get a backup right after you root and install cwm, then again after you successfully flash your first rom), you should feel fairly confident in trying out different kernel/modem combos.
Just remember that if you're using an i9000 kernel, you must use an i9000 modem. Likewise if you are using a captivate kernel, you should pair it with a captivate modem (kb1).
Here's an excellent list of kernels and modems and the safe combinations.
And, of course, there's always the modem thread.
Nice! Thanks man

[Q] Best ROM and Kernel combo??

I am looking for some advise on the best combo for the G2X. If I could get some advise or input on the best ROM and Kernel to flash I would really appreciate it. I am looking for something to use for my daily driver. I appreciate your help.

For a daily driver I would suggest EB Froyo. Awesome ROM.
I would suggest to not flash any kernels, stock is the best for now.
The kernels we got are in beta phase and I have experienced freezes and lock ups using them.
Hope that helps

It stands for "Android Open Source Project"
So basically his ROM is kind of like the base ROM where everyone could start making, and cooking their ROMs.
I flashed his ROM but I like the LG keyboard plus I like the stock camera too, that's the only reason I don't use it as my daily driver, oh and is a big hassle to have to set up everything again.

Why Bother
Why bother with this total fail of an upgrade when there are so many better custom ROM's to choose from right here on xda?
I'm on Infused v2.2.3 and really like it but considering making the move to ZEUS soon.
I just can't see any reason to make a giant leap backward with the AT&T GB upgrade. It's just too little too late. YMMV though.
Maybe Samsung decided to use Zeus?
(Actually the GB release is running really well for myself. I haven't even rebooted yet since install last week.)

Yeah who likes a 100% working phone anyway, right?
meh.
now I know why there are no sources yet. and yeah the update is important if not just for sorcery code. never mind Samsung and att having respect for the customers....
think of how much better the roms can be if we don't have to mix libs from different leaks to fix video recording or playback and workarounds for the sdcard and wifi. and if they actually have HDMI. then we could swap kernels around without considering switching vold.fstab. yeah I hope the update is fixed soon so the code can be released finally.
someone is gonna have to get the update files and decrypt them to get a stock kernel though. (to extract initramfs and the root process will require a kernel to revert to until custom kernels are made.)
If you consider hdmi 100 percent, then I guess im running a 99 percent working rom......yea.....im good with that

hey I'm using Zeus myself. but I use the kl2 kernel on it and it would be nice if you didn't need to change vold.fstab back to stock to do so. I just want source code for new kenrels that could be maintained as all the old kernels were developed by people who are no longer here.

Dani, you are running zeus with the stock kernel?
I remembered dman said trying to run stock kernel in zeus will boot loop.
There were scripts not supported by stock kernel.
To make it run, just disable lagfix?
Just curious...

the init.d scripts wont run. that's true. but you should be able to change kernels after a reboot. its running for me. I didn't look at the scripts to see what other things I'm missing but the rom runs fine without the tweaks and lagfix.

well I ran it with infuseion a few days, but I get the themes, the rom is deodexed, and when ever I deodex something it seems to run weird either slow or choppy. Zeus doesn't. I dunno what dman uses to deodex but it works better than what I have used.

Stable rom?

I've been running my own personal variant of simple KJ6. Sometime ago I took Krylon's release as the base and made few changes to it (a neater 1% battery, some change to de-CIQ, etc.) It's heavily debloated though and has a couple of my own conservative presets in init.d. Otherwise it's stock. If anybody wants it I can post it.
I would say post it like FB did his.

May want to look at this thread. Maybe that is why I have never seen a reboot or lockup on Ziggy's. I am always on the latest full firmware and run the lowest clock and voltage options on Ziggy with no problem. Worth a shot.
