Kb1 kernels? - Captivate General

Sorry people but Im still a Noob.... Dumb question time.
I'm Running the stock FROYO 2.2 and was wondering if I could flash any KB1 kernel on it?
For ex:
[KERNEL] stock+Voodoo stable 5.x for Captivate
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=870760
[KB1]eXistZ Captivate Kernel #8[28MAR][Voodoo Sound 7, Lagfix & Color][OC/UV]
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=988805
[KERNEL][KB1]OverStock v1.2 341MB, Voodoo Sound, Color, Lagfix, BLN 3/23/2011
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=989298
And if so, What would be a stable, reliable Kernel? Thanks
Some more info on my phone: Baseband version= I897UCKB1
Build number= FROYO.UCKB1

Are you stock stock? lagfix? rooted?
Those will all work. being stock the first kernal you flash will have to be a .tar version with the full version of Odin (ensure you have 3 button combo)
My current favorite is Onix. Works great and is very stable. Plus it add UV and OC features. AND gets updates all the time.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=930679 flash the .tar from here, for Onix
Then flash an i9000 modem.

Yup, I'm runnin stock, rooted and have the supercurio voodoo lagfix kernel. But I'm lookin for somthin different that might speed up my phone... I've never done any OC/UV so I'm not to worried about that that much haha
Thanks man

That kernel has clockwork.........so you don't need to use a .tar version.
Use the CWM versions put to the root of your SD and flash with clockwork Recovery
Even if your not into OC/UV the kernal is still great at stock settings.

So its as easy as flashing from CWM?

Sure is.

Oh and the onix kernel is an i9000 based kernel. Does that matter at all if I'm runnin a kb1 modem? Cuz I've been reading that we shouldn't mix kernels

Its a reoriented I9000 kernal to work on our captivates.
As is Speed mod and a few others.

Aahh so it wont really matter?

As long as it says its for android 2.2 your good.
Just which ever one you choose make sure you get a modem that matches and your good!

Damn dude, thanks a lot for takin the time to help me out.... really appreciate it. Thanks man!

edit: Sorry, I re-read your last question.
If you choose to run an I9000 kernel then you need to match an I9000 modem to it.
They are a simple CWM flash as well. there is a thread on here somewhere with all the current 2.1,2.2 and I9000 modems in it. Just do a search
Here is the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=835272

I have read that others have done it with little success. Any reason why you are holding back from just flashing a full ROM. You are almost there and quite frankly, I think you are safer going with a prepacked ROM over putting pieces together on your own. If you are comfortable with rooting and CWM then you have nothing more to learn to do a full ROM flash. I have never looked back since I first flashed. I've tried several and would say my favorites so far are Serendipity and FireFly. If you want to stay more Stock like, Cognition is also really great stuff.

Ok thanks guys.... Ill look into that

Even with the prepacked roms most people do not leave them alone, and mod and change the guts of them to their taste.
I don't see how learning to change things one part at a time is a bad thing, as you learn how everything works together, and will have a better understanding of it as a whole.

That's true.... but ill look into a rom haha.... hopefully I don't become an addict haha jk

Get something designed to work together first. That gives you an easy start and stability out of the box.
After that, and after making a backup (get a backup right after you root and install cwm, then again after you successfully flash your first rom), you should feel fairly confident in trying out different kernel/modem combos.
Just remember that if you're using an i9000 kernel, you must use an i9000 modem. Likewise if you are using a captivate kernel, you should pair it with a captivate modem (kb1).
Here's an excellent list of kernels and modems and the safe combinations.
And, of course, there's always the modem thread.

Nice! Thanks man

First of all I did search and found some info but it wasn't really helpful... I'm new to the Charge. I've had many android phones before and have never had problems rooting and flashing roms. I've searched and I've seen the instructions on how to root and they look like they're in another language. Does anyone have more clear instructions on how to root??? Any help, asap, would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hey Brandon, this thread gives a great description on how to root your charge. => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14692818
If you still have questions feel free to ask, and I'll try to answer them as best as i can.
Ok, so i got it rooted and just installed a de-bloated stock Rom. Its ok, but now question is, if i decide to install a gingerbread Rom or any other Rom such as gummycharged, can i just install like i did on my bolt or x in cwm or do i have to use this odin program? if i have to use odin, how do i go about installing that way? thanks in advance...

For most roms, like gummycharged fe 2.0 and gbe 2.0 you just need CWM. I'm sure the process is the same as your bolt but just to be clear: Place the rom's zip you want on the sd card, boot into CWM, wipe date, dalvik cache, and cache partition, and then install the rom from the sd card. =) There are also some roms that come as full-odins, where you flash the package through odin and it does the work for you. That being said, you shouldn't run into that many unless you are un-rooting your phone. Hope that made sense. let me know if it doesn't.
Sweet. Thanks alot dude. That's awesome to know. I don't really wanna get into messing with odin. I like being able to do everything from my phone and not having to hook up to the laptop.

LOL, I was just coming in here to ask that exact same question as the OP. The wording was almost verbatim what I was going to say. The majority of experience I have had with Android is with HTC phones. I have rooted a few tablets as well. The instructions for the charge root are super confusing compared to previous devices.
My big issue is with the terminology. Like what is EE4, EPF1? Are there certain kernels that only work with certain roms? How easy is it to completely pooch the phone if I click on the wrong button in Odin? Can I make a nandroid backup and swap roms on the fly using Rom Manager depending on my moods or is it more complex then other android phones?
I haven't checked out the posts yet in this thread but seeing as how at least one other person has been just as confused as me I'm wondering if someone out there that has experience with both Samsung and lets say HTC phones can make a simple guide that makes comparisons to other rooting processes. For people that arn't used to Samsung phones, these instructions can be very overwhelming and there doesn't seem to be a newbie thread out there that gives information on all the abbreviations used and what they mean.

EE4, EP1W, ect are OS build numbers. EE4 is the current official release Froyo build. EP1W is the latest leaked Gingerbread build we have. Those are pretty much the only two version you want to worry about right now. There are Froyo kernels and Gingerbread kernels. Any Froyo kernel will work with any Froyo ROM, and any GB kernel will work with any GB ROM.
Only mess with the PDA button in Odin and you'll be fine. Forget the Phone button even exists, because that's the button that can get you into trouble. You can use the PIT button as well if you have the charge.pit file, but it's not normally necessary, so only do that if you have a reason.
ROM Manager is useless with this phone. There are reports that there is a version of CWM from it that will work with the Charge, but it doesn't work nearly as well as the latest imnuts CWM. The orange CWM dated 8/17 will let you do nandroid backups...you just need to boot directly into it and do them from CWM itself and forget about ROM Manager.

kernels for all roms on the Charge are installed in CWM, as for GB kernels you can't go wrong with any of Imoseyons voodoo ones... radios don't necessarily need to be updated but I've noticed a big improvement with the latest EP1W modems, however the results vary on different phones I've seen

Flashing kernals/roms

I was wondering if I'm rooted and still on stock but want to do a little tweaking, can I flash a different kernel to my phone without any damage done? And I have been looking around for a good pretty solid rom to use and customize but I cannot make up my mind, any suggestion ?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
You can use "sgs kernel flasher" from the market to flash a modded kernel, if you are stock froyo, that means it needs to be a froyo kernel, you don't want a yogurt-covered gingerbread brick lol. You can find kernels in the super thread in the Dev section.
Now as for the whole rom suggestion thing...you are friggin beating a dead horse, all your gonna get is a different answer from everyone...Jebus, just flash em all and find a favorite lol.

+1 for using Entropy's build. He actively supports it on xda and knows the Infuse. It runs very well for an early build, and will only get better.
Sent from my SGH-I997 using Tapatalk 2
Entropy's is the way to go.
Its really your preference jt's build can be over locked to 1.6 entropy's can onIy be undervolted personally i am with these guys as there is more support on xda and nothing against jt who as I understand is most responsible for the port but entropy is the **** with this device
Sent from my SGH-I997 using XDA
I flashed entropy's over the weekend, came from cm7 and I have to say this rom is awesome! Even at its early stage. This rom can be your daily driver easily! Just wish BT was working as I personally feel that's an important feature especially these days when it comes to using hands free calling however these guys (jt and entropy) dedicate their own free time for us infuse users which a lot of us appreciate. They've already done a lot so not gonna complain. It does come down to your own personal preference.

Flash both
YOU decide
this is like asking for a "best rom"
thread
only YOU can decide
Entropy's Build
i have been using his build for quite some time. Only problem is sometimes it likes to freeze up when you lock the phone - solution that works ... keep pressing the power key until it responds -(works every time)
Ive got jt's build on as it just works for me. Once i find something that works, i usually just keep it on. If entropy fixes the camera then ill come over, but until then honestly unless for the wifi and overclock, there is not much of a difference.

I can't get Eagles Blood AOSP build 1 to work on G2X

I've tried a lot of ways the only from I got to work on my G2X is Genesis from Mr.Apocalypse and Hellfire before 1.6 and I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I do the regular wipe data/cache/Davilk and its a no go. There's been a bug with 4.0.4 roms that requires you to flash it twice, one after another, nothing in between. Next time you try a rom like that, take note of how long it takes to install. If it only took a few seconds, it wasn't properly flashed. Flash again right away and you should notice it taking longer to install. Then flash your gapps and/or kernel if ya need it and reboot. Should be good.

@Caliyork yeah your right I really ain't notice that but I'll be looking at that, have you been successful putting kernels on because I have the same problem with that ?? Hmm could be, but I was in the g2x forum and I browsed for kernels and I got fauxs 123 kernel, Trinity, and Harshs and none of them seemed to have worked, I used Mr.Apocalypse and none of them went thru. Cud u give me links to see if any were the right ones ? Do you use OC/UV ?

I'm not sure referring to quality control is accurate, but phones do have bad batches or manufacturing tolerances and what not. Can't always get the cream of the crop.
That's practically the one reason why I chose the G2x instead of the HTC MyTouch 4G lol. Bad EMMC happens to die on you and you've got yourself an expensive brick.
Have you tried any other ROM other than ICS roms? Trying to figure out if the problem is restricted to those only. Might help.

Haha yeah I've heard that before but I'm not sure if I have a bad batch because I got Genesis, AOKP, and Hellfire (ICS roms) to work fine but could not get any custom kernels that supported OC/UV to work on them. Uhh I actually been using nothing but ICS roms I never tried and other roms that supported GB just cuz I wanted to be updated. Are you on any other Roms or you using a ICS rom ?
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA
I've used a lot of different ROMs, and they all work fine. But I'm on the stock LG 2.3.4 that was released lately, and that's been running really super.
Flashing ICS doesn't necessarily mean that you're up to date when a lot of things don't work. I've used AOKP, EB's AOSP, HFS and Owain's. I have multiple problems with data dropping, APN's disappearing when entering Airplane mode or mass storage just completely does not work. Not to mention, NO NETFLIX!
As far as kernel issues, make sure you're installing the appropriate ones for the P999 and make sure they're ICS specific and not for the GB kernels.
Edit: If I remember, EB's AOSP uses a modified Faux Kernel that supports OC right off the bat, so there's no need to flash a different kernel.
That's true never thought of it like that where can I get the rom you are using ???? And yeah I tried to get EB AOSP to work but it wont for me -_____- lol
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA
I'm using a stock rom. If you feel adventurous then flash the new V21y baseband (50% likely to brick your phone hard). If not, I would just stick with GB. My all time favorite is WeaponG2x.

I'd like to run that as my phone ran better on and came stock with froyo. Once I updated to Ginger it began to suck. Force closes, lagging. It been terrible but I can't upgrade the phone until next year at upgrade time. It has been a great $0.97 phone. I've tried to load roms and it doesn't work. I get some e:signature verification error. What would be the best way to load this rom. I am new to all of this and would love to learn more. However even in the tutorials I run across acronyms I don't know. Could someone please give me the easiest way to load this rom.

Two things:
1. If you're having trouble with acronyms, take a look at the "XDA Terms and Acronyms" post. That should help you out.
2. To get around the 3e signature issue, your best bet would be to flash a Froyo kernel with ClockworkMod recovery already included via Odin or Heimdall. I would suggest Onix, as it's a good kernel and I know it works with Firefly from previous experience.
thanks
thanks for the help. it is certainly appreciated. i just flashed the odin kernal. does it matter that the phone is currently running stock gb? also how long does it take to load? i like literally just did it at 10:14pm on wednesday june 20, 2012.

Team Phoenix aka The Collective aka The Family did come out with a great GB ROM called Mosaic. While Mosaic is themed blue, it does have a flashable Firefly theme here if you're partial to that.
They also came out with an ICS ROM, Fusion. Unfortunately it doesn't have a Firefly theme but it does have a green theme that looks pretty good as well.
It is important to note that the Firefly ROM is the only one that has call recording. It was never implemented in any of the more recent ROMs. Hopefully this helps.
I like firwfly in that it is quicker than the stock gb and it supports call recording. I needed it at the request of my attorney to record all calls with my sons mom. Id like to get back to a gb based rom that supports call recording. I don't want to try a ics rom until its more stable and safer. Don't want to render my phone useless.

di11igaf's Rom on 2.2.1 also had call-recording. LOVED this rom!!!
Does anyone know why this feature is left out of all recent and current Roms? Currently on an ICS Rom now, and the only thing that I really miss is the call-recording. There is a post about this issue for the SGS II on 2.3.5 & Mod here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1482721.
