Desire S random reboot - HTC Desire S

Guys,
The Desire s of my gf is rebooting random. Right now it is about 5 times a day. I already did a hard reset and the problem remains. The phone is running stock 2.3.5 with Sense 3.0. Already tried the search on the forum, but there are to many posts
Does anyone have a solution? I want to rule out the software before thinking of a hardware issue thnx in advance

There was a talk about this a long time ago and have experienced before it on my phone. A quick solution, a piece of paper on the battery cover to help push the battery to make much more contact on the board.

Going to trie that later today. Thanks. But I already tried tapping the battery and shaking the device while it's on, with no succes to force the reboot.

MY particular sensation powers off for reboot and is generally wonky

Regardless of rom, hboot, etc, it does this intermittently. Has anyone else experienced this??
Sometimes power off goes to sleep of death and requires battery pull. Sometimes reboot turns it off. Even all stock it did this.
Very strange.

Everything is great for me. Guess I lucked up cause mostly all the gripes I see here I don't have those problems.

Duff device, take it back and get it replaced.
You shouldn't have to put up with a device that doesn't work as it's meant to.
The more people who return faulty items, the more pressure there is for HTC to improve their quality control and so get the factories to improve their game.
I have the same problem. It looks like faulty devide, after 6 phones from htc this is the first one having issues for me
Happened to me too, I went ahead and asked for help here on xda..... Nobody answered to my questions, so regardless of Rom, kernel the phone was constantly dying on me whenever I needed it the most.
I bought a battery from eBay, one with a 1900 mAh, it's branded Anker.....put it in the phone and since then NO MORE PROBLEMS.
Now I don't know if this is the case for you, but I think that 12 dollars its not too much to invest to try.
Good luck to you

Thanks for replies. Currently running the OEM 2.3.4 ota with root and bloat frozen, doing ok for now.
If problem comes back I'll warranty it. This is becoming a pattern with HTC...

[FIX] Random reboots/shutdowns. Pictures added!

So since this issue has been giving me quite a bit of frustration, I have devised a very simple fix that should work for at least a few other people. There was a post in the ARHD thread where it suggested cleaning the connectors and the battery. I was pulling out my battery to give this a try when I realized the battery could be pushed slightly farther down into the housing, allowing for a more solid connection.
What I did was wedge a small piece of business card between the top of the battery housing and the battery itself. This has worked very well for me so far. If anyone else would like to try this and either confirm or deny that it is working for them that would be great.
As requested, pictures have been attached. One shows the items you need, another shows where I placed it against the battery and the other shows it sitting flush in the battery housing. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

I found pulling the ground pin out a bit helps, the one that makes contact with the battery cover and can cause touchscreen issues.
I thought the random reboots/shutdowns were a software problem. Because after I flashed this a fix a found the issue stopped. Kinda...

I've tried a lot of the fixed, including underclocking to 1ghz and varying ghz between 1 and 1.5. But this has worked for me, figures I would share. But a lot of phones are different...so what works for me might not work for others. Just thought I would share what worked for me! Plus I think its worth a shot, don't see how it could hurt anything. But this is xda, so at your own risk and all that other stuff.

I heard placing a small piece of foul between the two can help also. But if the problem creeps up again for me i'll give that a try too.

So did I, but it can happen on any ROM, including the stock one.

I have found that whenever I have this problem, re-seating the battery temporarily solves the problem. I will try this next time as I agree these phones do seem to have a problem with the battery connection.

Best of luck! You may also want to put some rubbing alcohol on a towel and wipe the connectors on battery and housing.

Can anyone confirm that this works? I saw a thread where someone sent their phone to HTC and they replaced the mother board on warranty and it fixed the problem.
I called HTC and told the problem and they confirmed that they have been receiving lots of complaints and replacing the mother board would fix the problem. I have a month before my warranty is up so maybe ill try this before sending it in.

device rebooting and freezing

im running ordroid 9.0.0 and i get this freak error my device reboot many times and dont stop until i remove the battery and i hate it cuz its reboot during a phone call or when browsing ive done so many thing to prevent this problem but no use any help ???
ps.ive done full wipe thing and dont tell me to reflash it cuz ive already dont it
Very strange that never happened to me while running ordroid . However I just had it happen to me ruining Aokp. I also needed to pull battery for it to boot. Strange because ordroid never gave me any problems like that! I wish I had the answer. IM going to strat maintence rebooting my device daily and see if that helps. Its reconvened we do that anyway. I wish I had a clear answer for you but all I know is my device just did the exact same thing with aokp rom. Hopefully we can get some answers. best of luck to you. Mine only did it once and its not a continuing continuing thing like yours. I hope you get the issue resolved. I'll be watching the thread for answers. Good luck!

Some people noted a battery problem which might cause similar effect. Either a problem with the battery itself, or it is not sitting right in its socket, somewhat loose.

Check to see if your battery is lose and if it is this is your issue. This can be fixed by putting a small piece of paper onthe battery area to stabilized it. This is not my issue but it could be your s . If the battery wiggles chances are thats the problem.

[Q] Just another restarting issue. Insight please?

Alright so I picked up a Sensation 6-7 months ago from my T-Mobile dealer. Ever since I picked it up, I took a break from the flashing/rooting scene.
In May/June, when the official ICS update was released, I installed it to see how it ran before I went full force into the rooting scene once again. Ever since I downloaded it, my phone will restart at random times. It's starting to become very frustrating especially when I use my phone for mostly business purposes. It ONLY started this AFTER I installed the official ICS update.
So onto the next step. What I've done soo far is as described
-tried different batteries
-formatted several SD cards, with no luck
-formatted the phone twice
-I always do hard resets at least twice a day
-done several tests on apparent rogue apps to see if there was a difference
Alright, so now I ask of my XDA family, obviously this has been a problem ever since the ICS update. I haven't done any rooting on this phone in case I DO happen to get it replaced since its still under warranty
The ultimate question is this, will rooting fix this issue FOR SURE or should I play the safe route and just get a replacement Sensation with it still being under the one year warranty? What would you guys do Im this situation? Any other suggestions to try before deciding one of these options? Don't wanna go through with the rooting if I just have to unroot it take it back to the T-Mo dealer days later.
Any help is appreciated!
Thanks

tried this ?
Thanks for the suggestion, but it wouldn't necessarily be a battery issue if it just started doing it once ICS was installed? Or could it have been a coincidence that it started rebooting when I did the update? Does the housing wear in after a certain time causing the battery connection to loosen?
Thanks.

I also use this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1622683 (third post down) as I was in the same boat as you. I ran out of idea's to why my Sensation was always rebooting no matter what I did with countless different ROM's, Kernels etc and found that this battery_fix solved all my problems. Not had 1 reboot since Hope this helps
So just a little update. Ever since I tried the credit card trick, my phone hasn't restarted once. Roughly 2 full days. Done several things that I did before that would easily make the phone restart. Opened many apps at one time, drained the battery down to 3 percent and still no restart.
I'll keep testing this method for the next couple days but so far it seems like its been a good work around. Thankyou for pointing me in the right direction ganeshp!

[FIX][CASE MOD] Fixing all the Random Reboots!

Hi,
All credit goes too firosemp!!
I have just opened a new topic because the random reboots affect so many people.
In this video you will find the solution:
Thank you for this great XDA forum!
I don't thinks so.
My battery phone is definitely.
Sometimes, my phone is turned off when in the bag

But I think so. Every ROM especially Android1-7 4.3 and Vipers JB Rom is super stable now.
Give it a try!!
For me this was the best MOD (beside the MMS build.prop MOD for Vodafone Germany) ever.
how old are you 10 ? I did those tricks to nokia 3310 but now I know that the absolutly fix is gsm service... and when you say random reboots this is't about the hardware is about software...

what did you remember mate?
old times and common trick
everybody were using that trick
but in most cases it works now with random reboots
when the battery doesn't fit correctly with the pins and loses connection with them

I dont understand you. This fix is for fixing random reboots. Its not too hard to understand.
Maybe you are too young...
Hi guys, I jsut want to share my experience about random reboots...For about 4 month I had this problem with every rom I tried, changed battery but nothing so I sent my device to HTC and they changed motherboard; when they sent it back, problem wasn't solved but after a couple of week I had a clean install of inspiration without restoring my backups via TitaniumBackup (I erased them)...since then no more random reboots with any rom I tried...I just want to say that if this hardware method doesn't fix reboots, consider corrupted app backups
Had random reboots either, by replacing the battery with was 2 years old with an anker suddenly the problems dissapeared all. This trick shouldn't help really but yeah thanks.

It really does help in some cases.. Like rzr said, improves the connection between battery & pins.
But it doesn't take a genius to figure out something like this >.>

Buy an Anker battery, especially if your stock one is ~2 years soon.
Also adjust CPU clock speeds and use apps like Greenify.
Stop flooding the development thread !
u got the General and the Troubleshooting
but this one is Fu&^%$ Sacred
I confirm it worked for my Sensation 4G with even Anker 1900mah. Months ago I used original battery then had random reboots. I bought the anker 1900mah battery, the problem went out a couple of days ( maybe because Anker is a bit bigger than original battery), however later it returned... so I searched for many solution and saw this... I tried with my anker and now for 6 months I have had no more random reboots...

I had my Sensation XE sent in for repairs (Volume button fell off). The shop lend me a Sensation XL. That thing had crazy random reboots. And I fixed it by wedgeing in a piece of folded paper between the battery top and the phone. Only because you could almost slide the battery around in its "seat".
Now I have an unorginal battery for my Sensation. Its a little bit taller and wider, I almost have to force it in. Thats way im sure the few reboots I have are kernel / rom related.

I've had some random power off, I suspected it's battery probelm because the phone didn't reboot, it just shut down. I've put a little piece of paper between the battery and the housing several days ago and it didn't happen since. Simple but effective, at least for me.
