Inspire 4G ROMs/Mods; Performance/Versatility/Aesthetic Options - HTC Inspire 4G

Okay, so I recently rooted my phone, and discovered just how awesome it is to break free of the stock limits imposed on us by the corporations.
However, I have been having a hard time finding the right ROM for me. I've flashed several ROMs so far (at least 4), and I haven't found one that meets my needs yet. Here are the one's I've tried:
CyanogenMod 7.2.0 - It's wonderful; I love every feature. However, a lack of .wma support is a big deal for me, seeing as I use Windows Media Player for a lot things, from managing my library to ripping music off of discs. So a significant portion of my media library has become unuseable. The lack of gapps out of the box was also very annoying.
SmartDroid - It was nice, but it also lacked .wma/.wmv support. It also did not have the features that CyanogenMod had, such as the over/under clocking embedded in the OS, and various other features that allowed for a significant amount of customization.
MookeOS - This was a terrible OS. Very unstable and error-prone. Also lacked key features. To it's credit, however, it was pretty smooth in terms of aesthetics.
CyanogenMod 9.0 - I never got to try it; it bootlooped on me. I waited like 5 hours for it to load up, and it never happened.
There might have been one more, but it too, was bad.
So here's my question:
If I want a ROM that offers a multitude of features, (preferably) a non-Sense OS, and provides good array of performance and customization options out-of-the-box, where do I turn? What ROM is right for me?

Go with MIUI, it is customizable beyond belief and is based off of cyanogenmod. It has lots of features and is really polished and nice looking, not to mention the immense amount of theming you can do. I have been running it for over 6 months now without a single problem. Also it is quite fast
Let me know what you decide on and I hoped I helped

I know that the app PowerAmp will play wma files. Give that a shot. It should work with any ROM. The full version of that app is $5, but you can get a trial and see if it works. There may be other players that do this too.

Get mx player, and use cyanogenmod...great combo
Also note mx player is free!!

Thank you guys so much for your responses.
I did try a variety of media players (including the aforementioned video player) to solve the problem, but the problem still occurred. I figure that it wasn't the application's fault so much as it was the OS. It just doesn't recognize that particular format (for whatever reason).
I actually flashed EnergyROM earlier today, and I think it's the one for me. It's what I was looking for at the least. So far it has met all of my expectations and more, and I will probably stick with it; I still have plenty of features to play around with.
Thanks to you all again, I really, really appreciate it.
Best of luck to you all, and happy flashing.

I've been running JellyTime_R29 for the lest several days, and it is flawless. It is based on CM10, so it might not be what you're looking for but it certainly an incredible option. I think I'll stick with this ROM for a while... The only quirk I've experienced is the camera app changed from JellyBean4.2 camera to the ICS camera and I don't know why. Everything is butter smooth, which is a concern for our device sine it is only a single core processor.... Google Now works and is amazing just to top it off. Extremely customizable ROM. CyanogenMod7 Review (as I see it)

I have been using this build for quite a while now and decided to write a review of the ROM. Please keep in mind I am not a developer !!! I am simply writing this from a user standpoint and cannot nor will not support your problems. This is a review based on my opinions and usage of the ROM.
Pros:
I do like the UI. It is fairly stable and I haven't had much trouble out of it for the most part. The combination of ADW Launcher and the Cyanogen settings are great. The speed of the ROM is pretty good for a ported ROM based on GingerBread. I can't complain much about that. General things that I like are the advanced menus for customizing the dock and theme settings. The themed settings change icons for contacts, mail, messaging, phone, browser, calendar, and videos ( I may have missed some). The cyanogen settings cover an array of things that you can poke at but in my opinion should be included with stock builds as well. Overall if you were wanting to use this on a daily basis I think you would be ok to go ahead and install this ROM... NOTE: Don't hold me responsible if you brick your phone trying. It isn't one of the easiest roms I've
ever installed. The sleep policy has been fixed so that the phone doesn't reboot on unlock...which on my first flash hadn't been fixed and really really turned me off from this ROM.
Cons: I have yet to figure out why this is (again not a dev) but your microSD card will not mount when connected to the pc. I'm sure they are working on this but I haven't downloaded an update or nightly (which is current at the time of this post btw) that has fixed it. I do have some random picky things that I can't get an answer to, and good luck if you do...feel free to send them to me also. Some of my .mp3 ringtones will not work period. Different ones of even larger file size work... I'm not sure how that works out. Text messaging (native) doesn't work for incoming or outgoing... But I will say that I was having issues with that before so I can't blame that on this ROM. There are a few apps that won't work with this build easy uninstaller is one, I just get a fc. Battery is another issue that may be addressed with future releases. I don't run GPS (so don't ask if it's accurate) but keep wifi on all the time. I get probably about 8 hours with wifi on all the time. Not the best but definitely not the worst. You also cannot charge the phone while it is off... really not sure why, and the extended power menu doesn't work. And for the most part is an in depth install procedure... Back to stock with odin, flash two kernals, then a couple of files... Pretty lengthy and you have to be precise or else it bricks. Here it is if your interested... Thanks to MobileTechVideos for the instructions and video.
How to install CyanogenMod7
Other than that I have had virtually no problems (that I consider major) with this ROM and do like it and will probably continue to use it. If you have any general questions please feel free to ask. Again, again... I am not a dev so questions of that nature should be posted here: CyanogenMod7
I tried it and liked what works but it is still alpha quality and so i will wait for a few weeks until i give it another shot.

I agree, it is definitely still a beta build and as noted by Cyanogen... hasn't been put into the stable build section of their forums. I do look forward to a stable build. Perhaps the Dev's can address some of the weird issues that I mentioned above.
i also was not able to send multi media mms never would go through i tried for 20 mins to receive and send ,
this rom is great but here is why it sucks, i watch the cyanogen nightlies for the galaxy s phones, and with the types of updates im seeing on the cappy versus lets say the vibrant , there is no ****ing hope and this rom is dead.
the last update fixed an install file wtf. so at this rate cyanogen will be rc in o id say next year. ill have a new phone by then. my money is on miui

Well you completely forgot to mention that, currently it cannot handle lots of video format, most importantly mkv and even if you find something like Rock Player, there's a lot of lag in it. You cannot charge the phone while its off (because it'll turn on as soon as you plug the charger in). Also, you might encounter a totally new problem which you may not have an idea about. If captivate is your spare phone then play with it else stay away for a while until a RC is released.
This is just my opinion from 3 days of experience on CM7.

It was a total flop for me :/
It ran well when I first installed it, but started running "funny" (random crashing) after I installed gapps, then totally started crapping out after the 3/16 update.
I ended up ditching it for a 2.2 rom, mostly because I didn't feel I was gaining anything substantive and losing things I regularly use, like a feature rich camera app and divx playback support.
Been running for 3 days. 0 problems.
I've ran into a few bugs. External SD, booting when usb plugged in. Only charging to 95% (apparently a feature not a bug). At one point my signal shot down to searching, then it recovered and grabbed a signal. Not sure what caused that, but it was random.
I also cannot get it to mount to my PC. Kind of annoying, but if I need to transfer anything I just use dropbox.
I like it, and I think I'll keep with it. Even though it isn't 100%, I love gingerbread, and it's working for me.

I did forget that you cannot charge the phone while off and now that you mention it the extended power menu doesn't work either. It is fairly aggravating that Cyanogen updates the vibrant with "real" fixes other than this fixing little things but... All in all, it is still usable, just not stable or reliable.
Every time I try and warn someone that CM7 is not yet ready for primetime I get bashed for it, yet there seem to be plenty of people echoing my comments. Like I said in another thread, the people that are saying CM7 is stable and works great are either not using their device to its full potential or are willing to live without certain features. There is really no compelling reason to live with a ROM that has this many bugs or deficiencies when you consider how many really good ROMs there are available for our Cappys that have few, if any, issues. Yeah, they may not have Gingerbready theming or cutesy animations, but they just work. Andromeda 1.2 is one that comes to mind.
I am on it from I think last friday...Not a single problem...atleast how i use it...of course except battery life...which I am trying to solve...
Rock player worked well for me...I watched couple of movies when I was on road....never lagged just stopped couple of times....
great GPS...instant locks...i am amazed...But I also tried MIUI...and it is very very fast...and something different which I never experienced before...I think people should give it a try...ofcourse it has bugs too as it based on CM7...but they fixed camera bug and little stuff.....

I am by no means saying that it is ready for the masses... The only one that I would suggest without a second thought to someone who isn't willing to deal with at least some problems is Cognition Series by DesignGears. To my knowledge (and opinion) this is the absolute best rom for the captivate. IF ... Cyanogen gets to the point of a Cognition rom in function and use, then I might suggest it for the masses but not until then.

Your right in regard to it not being ready for most users (many are already praising the miui 2.3.3 also which is even less stable.....not saying it isn't promising). I think it breaks into 2 camps.
1. If you are a power user that wants all aspects of your device to function as intended...not for you. More specifically, If you use an external SD especially if your moving files to and from mounted to a PC....this is not the rom for you (this is my biggest gripe at this point). If you do lots of video in different formats...not for you as you will face compatibility issues. If you have to ask how your flash back to stock....this is probably not for you. If you value battery life as a top priority...not yet for you. Most of the other deficiencies or shortcomings had adequate work arounds but you until the major issues are resolved you will quickly find yourself flashing back to Phoenix, Firefly, Serendipity, Andromeda, etc.)
2. If you don't use and external SD and/or do much media vid/music then i can see why many view this as "stable" for their purposes. The UI, menus, and animations are smooth/fast and i never really had any issues with force closes while using it. Maybe its better linguistically to say its incomplete rather than refer to is as unstable and sorry if it offends the early adopters but if you are using it as your daily driver its pretty obvious you are using an inferior rom @ this point.

Excellent post.
Glad to see users sharing their experience on CM7. This is always good foe the community. I hope to see new users to read this thread prior to making any decision whether to flash CM7 2.3.3 or not.
On another note, I'm sure once Samsung do final release of Gingerbread 2.3.3 for i9000 series (last I heard that an early beta was released), we cappyites will see stable release.

Regarding the phone turning on when charging, I believe it's a gingerbread "feature". It's been said that it is working as intended. Also, the iphone does the same thing so I don't really see it as an issue. It's probably google seeing behavior they like and implementing it.
You can not mount the external sd but you can transfer to your internal then on the phone transfer to external, so I am not certain it Is fair to say you can not use your external sd. Video is an issue, and battery is as well.
At this point in time it is a trade off, there are several things cm7 can't do well or can not do at all. there are also several things it does much better than any 2.2 rom or are not available on 2.2 roms.
Its all preference and priorities. Kinda like any best rom discussion.

Largely it its because you have never used it, and have only tried one rom. That and you are compelled to jump on any thread that mentions it as if it is a personal mission. It its not as if you do not make some valid points, but it is not hard to see why it may rub some the wrong way after a while.
This is not an attempt to start something, but your comments make it seem like there is no warrant to people who go back at you.

Agreed... I was not trying to start a thread to bash any rom. However I do know that there are some hard feelings that are out based on certain features that work or don't and peoples impressions about the ROM itself. I also know that there is quite a bit of loyalty to certain ROM creators that no matter what they aren't going to be going to a new ROM simply because they are loyal to that dev... which is fine! I simply wanted to create an avenue for people who have used the ROM to pass along information and opinions on the ROM to people who are thinking about switching to it. People are entitled to their opinions and I am all for that... Just don't bash any of the devs or their work, it is not easy putting this stuff together and I for one am happy that I have a place I can go to that allows me to get away from stock. I hope that all will realize that

Looks like the Sensation is going back

It's sad to say that the Sensation is far from Sensational.
Today I've probably used the phone the most out of the 4 days I've had it and it's been issue after issue.
Firstly, I added some more music to the phone, it refused to group the albums properly. Reset the cache and this caused all sound alerts and notifications to go haywire, resetting them to random tracks from my music collection.
Secondly, after resetting the ID3 tags several times with different software I'm now left with my music completely fragmented, the worst is an album of 42 tracks which the phone displays as 28 separate albums of the same name.
Also, I've been experiencing a lot of signal dropouts today. (Other phone on same network sat next to it on full signal)
On top of this, numerous "little things", e.g. interface is slow and unresponsive compared to SGS and SGS2, battery life is pretty rubbish when doing anything but standby, many default Android software stripped out.
I called HTC support, they didn't even know what model the phone was from the IMEI and could not offer any assistance with any issues. I asked if there were any planned software updates and the response was, "you already have the latest Android software 2.3"
It's a real shame because the design of the phone and the screen are superb, but HTC's software is terrible.
This is why I'm waiting till it's rooted and unlocked. Custom ROMs always fix such issues.

With the new bootloader, it could never happen?
Initial units could be buggy. You may try replacing this.
Woov. "..but HTC's software is terrible"
I'm really suprised to see that comment for an HTC phone. HTC's good at software. At least that's how they're known in many years.
Sorry but these little issues could happen on first units. I'm sure HTC's gonna fix these issues wiith updates. Right now you can use different music player and home launcher. Hope you can solve them.

Aww, I hate it when that happens to my iTunes library
I don't know what you mean about the interface being slow and unresponsive though. Granted, I'm using Launcher Pro rather than the stock launcher (mainly because I like to have a 5x7 grid to play with) but when I was using stock it seemed pretty speedy to me. The rest of the phone is definitely lightning fast.
I've been pleased with the battery life too. It's beating what I used to get on my Nexus One, and that always seemed enough for me.
As for stripped out software, I wouldn't mind swapping back to the stock android messaging app. But I prefer the Sense contacts and dialler. Not sure what else has changed really
Anyway, sad to see you're not enjoying it like I am
try to pull up your music on your PC in a tag editing program & see if it's all different in there. I use mp3tag to edit all of my music to match perfectly.

It reminds me of the Touch Pro 2, granted it was Windows which sucked ass, but HTC released the first version of the "full" Sense Skin as an update and it totally killed the phone. The software simply required power the hardware couldn't deliver.
To give you an example, I showed the phone to a guy on my dev team today who's not really very interested in phones. His first comment was "how come the Android UI isn't as smooth and fluid as the iPhone?" then I showed him the SGS running stock Gingerbread and he thought it was much smoother.
If you run this phone side by side with the Samsung devices, they piss all over it for UI speed and responsiveness, even the single core SGS1.

I've finally solved this one, it's due to the "Artist Album" tag which MUST be the same for all songs or HTC's player thinks they are in different albums.
Strange thing is this tag is not editable in any of my editors, but you can edit it via Windows Explorer.

Damn, what happened to the good old days when that would only happen when someone mentioned "I" and "Phone" in the same sentence.

Agree with you. That's a fact.
According to earlier HTC phones everyone knows Sense UI isnt that smooth but it is pretty fast and stable. That's another fact. For me speed and stability is more important. If there is a problem with them and you're saying there is, I have a problem too. I'm sure HTC is gonna fix these things. Because dual core is new and Android 2.3 doesn't support it naturally. So it needs time. But you're right there shouldn't be any lag on dual core phone like this.
Op has to understand that bugs are usually associated with early adaptors. Wouldn't hurt to do a swap.

But wouldn't a new device have the same issues?
philio are you serious?
i have the tbolt, and i love my phone, but when looking at sensation's specs, it really does blow my bolt away..
however my gf is planning on getting the sensation when it releases.
My point of view is, that if your submerge into the root world, a little drops here and there shouldn't be a big deal, as we all know there will be updates to fix this, not to mention your phone is future proofed for the next two years..
everyone only focuses on the negative but never the positive.. i think the only other phone in the market that is better then the sensation is sgs2.. and thats not even close to being out in the US..
enjoy your 2.3 ginger bread, 3.0 sense.. Unlike you, the majority of us HTCers are now just starting to use the leaked 2.3 and its not completely reliable, as well as using work in progess 3.0 sense which is not a complete port.
consider yourself very lucky to be using an HTC with technology that the rest of us are still waiting on..
spread the love not the hate, because people will always find something to ***** about..
I've come from a galaxy s, even with gingerbread on it I still much prefer my sensation, sure there will be bugs, like any new release, but I find the sensation a lot more of a polished experience, I'm actually using a lot more features getting more out of android than I did on the galaxy s.

Oh yes it will, as some others with similar having already been cracked.
This game is nothing new and even before Android, HTC played this same game with WM devices and they would also get cracked.

Being a SGS owner I really hope you're not saying the Sensation is as, or even more, laggy than a single core Galaxy S. That would be a huge disappointment.

That is because he is comparing it to an SGS running AOSP Gingerbread which is completely tweaked in every way to optimize the ROM. Apples and oranges, apples and oranges. Imagine this phone with CM7 on it (which is what I'm sure his SGS is running). Can you say Sensation = M3, SGS = scooter?
Sucks it's not working out, but how you like a phone is ALL relative to what YOU like and feel about it.

What is the deal with CM7?

TB is my very first android, and i have come a long way, but maybe not long enough
as i can not for the life of me understand why everyone nut over the rom dubbed as cm7?
why???
I have been on almost single rom on the TB, and countless updates on each of them..
what is so special about CM7? do you prefer running linux?? why not run windows 3.1 on your quad core computers?
is it nostalgic?? or does it simply remind you of your ex girlfriend that you loved?
I know the dev team for the CM7 works very hard but so does every other dev.
So is it because cyanogen mod are simply better developers, and with their code other devs could build their rom with their findings..
i need to know, in order to get to the promise land
I guess some people hate anything other than stock android. But tbh I can't stand stock android. It is so boring and not polished.sense is so nice. But cyanogenmod is really fast and responsive. And battery life is a factor
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk
i'm sure a full fledged cm7 has good battery life.
not the current one. everything else seems to have better battery life
Its not bloated with extra crap. I love sense but to me CM7 always seems to be the fastest rom I run on my TB. It started out really popular with the TB because it was the only way for people to get gingerbread on their TB. It has grown so much and is finally, in my opinion nearly perfect. Its been a great trip and people have stayed with it till now and it has been well worth the wait. Stock android(for the most part) is a nice breath of fresh air.

It's not really stock android. It's close, but there's many improvements that work well with the system. OMFGB is much more vanilla than CM7. It's also 100% opensource (unlike sense roms and aosp roms like miui) which is useful if you care about more than the rom because you like to hack around on the source and don't trust certain roms like miui (no offense, but I am not using a rom made by chinese with no source given, just too creepy for me as far as how much control you are giving them aside from the fact they give back nothing to the community).
For the OP's information, there's plenty of information out there (including articles on wired and many screen casts on youtube) about CM7, besides their own site/wiki/forums/irc channel
there is much about cm7 that you don't know.
start here for a very small list of features... http://www.cyanogenmod.com/about/features
but this list barely scratches the surface. none of my favorite features are even listed here, and the cyanogen settings menu has literally hundreds (thousands?) of additional modifications you can make to your device.
i flashed cm7 for the first time about a month ago, and i won't ever be able to run sense again. i've been converted

yeah tons of features you only wish other roms had most of the time. I love the media track skip via the volume buttons with the screen off (similar to what blackberry does). Makes it way easier to switch songs or repeat one when you are running.
Its cause we want android without all the battery hogging and performance issues associated with crap like motoblur, sense, touchwiz etc. Plus cm7 has so much more features than being basically a asop rom. Its provides a lot of customization with your phone, which is what andrioid is all about.

I like the simplicity of stock-ish Android and all the tweaks and customizations CM offers. Sense is nice and all but way too heavy for my enjoyment.
I've only used CM7 on my nook color and was very impressed by its responsiveness and options. I heard of using Android OS's with overlapping UI but I figured this would only hamper on the overall user experience. I'm def open to different versions of Android for tablets. Any suggestions?
Hello my name is _________, and I'm addicted to CM7..............
Another cool factor is that it's available for so many different phones. I had CM7 on my EVO with Sprint. When I got my Thunderbolt I immediately rooted it and flashed CM7. There is a CM7 build for every major carrier in the U.S., So as long as you chose a supported phone your not stuck with some crappy user interface or an older version of Android. The main reason I chose the Thunderbolt over other Verizon 4G phones was that there was a CM7 ROM for it, but then again I'm an addict.

really? Then why are there all these threads about what is broken on cm7?
to prove my point of cm7 not being all that great on the thunderbolt, from page 1 of the thunderbolt general forums right now:

Some of my favorite features:
- skip tracks w/vol keys
- swipe notification bar to adjust brightness
- lockscreen gestures
- custom long press home/menu/search options
- long press back to kill current app
- hundreds of themes easily switched via Theme Chooser
- incoming calls in background when screen on
- permission management
- any app to sd
- built in performance and overclocking settings
...just to name a few. The real question is why do so many people have such a deep hatred of CM7? If you don't like the ROM you don't like it. Why make such a big stink out of it? If others want to like it then let them be
^ Shift Faced
i remember putting CM on the first phone i rooted, the MyTouch 3G... and it was the only one i ever used on that phone. This time around, i've experimented and tried out just about every single ROM for the TB. This time i would say that Synergy is my fav only because i managed to get better battery life with it then CM7(and its overclocked).
that plus, i know its ridiculous but i prefer for the green light to come on when the battery is at 100%, not 90%(yes i know that's just how AOSP ROMs are). im just use to going "oh green light, time to unplug".

I guess my point is that if this is your first time using cm7, would you be defending it as much.

I think he was just looking for pros and cons of the ROM more than calling it out.
Thread is not titled
"CM7 Sucks!"
I rarely use CM, but I think it is a really good ROM, with a good team behind it. Also, basically anyone who is into rooting/romming/modding their Android phone owes something to the CM team, in one way or another. I personally don't like it because, and this is hard to explain, it is almost too good. Lol. It feels like a stock, out-of-box software. I know there are tons of settings, and it runs great often times, but it just lacks the pizazz that I'm looking for. Not like overly flashy drag your phone down kinda stuff, but just a little something extra.
That being said, I, again, really appreciate the rom. I am currently using it on my Thunderbolt until we get some ROMs based off of the OTA if it ever comes, and have also used it on my D1 and Incredible.

[Q] Best Rom for MT4GS?

I apologize as I'm sure there is another thread but I couldn't find it through the search. I am looking for suggestions on a custom ROM, Stability, Performance, Battery Life, Hopefully with increased jpeg quality, and full camera performance. I use my phone on WiFi quite a bit so it would be a plus if the rom had amplified the WiFi to like 15 or 20db.
I'm uncertain as to the development of ICS on this device, But I just came from ICS on my Optimus One which ultimately lead to my device being bricked randomly after beta testing. I absolutely loved ICS, but if the rom isn't stable enough to use as a daily driver then I would rather wait... (and by stable I mean past alpha status, functional beta is stable for me... I did tons of beta testing for Optimus One so I know what to expect as far as stability goes with works in progress)
So if you guys could link me to some of the best ROMS for this device it would be much appreciated.
Good question, this is my second rooted device so my exp. is limited, and ive tried several roms pyroice desensed 1.1.2 most recently and i couldnt get the web browser to load (which oobviously sux). But im runnin doubleshot lite and its pretty much the basic system debloated, and very stable

Which web browser were you using? I know that in the development for ICS for Optimus One, there was an issue with the stock browser and Cyanogenmod 9. I know that Opera or QQBrowser was their temporary solution.
My favorite rom is Bulletproof because it has all the features of our phone, and no bugs that I have noticed. I know alot of people prefer other roms because they are faster, or they are ics, but Bulletproof is the only one that hasn't cut out features, and it doesn't have alot of bugs....

Using the Bulletproof Rom, mostly because everything actually works.
Tried the an older Cyangen7 mod, but the battery got way too hot and could never charge beyond 40%
Tried the ICS rom and there are some apps that need to be re-sized, mounting the SD card as a flash drive doesnt work (not into paying 5$ for a widget), problems with wifi tethering to my wifes tablet.

Just for the record, skialaska, Blue6IX here is the one who created the Bulletproof ROM and I really have to agree with him on this. I feel that tbalden has been doing a great job of contributing a lot of time to multiple different ROMs for different demographics (sense vs nonsense vs cm9) and I really appreciate all of the effort that he has put into the development on this phone.
Personally, I don't like the Sense UI much, so Bulletproof isn't for me. I actually use tbalden's Pyroice desensed ROM. I do, however, respect greatly the amount of work that Blue6IX has put into developing a solid ROM and all the research into the limits of the machine in both speed and voltage.
If you can't respect the developers that donate all their free time to making our devices work better, then you probably don't belong here.

Anyhoo, let's not bicker lest I have to close this thread. These "Best ROM" threads are always very polarizing and full of personal opinion - let's do our best to not attack others work, and just state what we feel is best and why. No need to put down other builds/ROM's because you don't like 'em!

Hi WeekendsR2Short,
I couldn't find anywhere to mention this that I could post to since I'm a new member and can't post on the actual developer page for the Alien Mod Solar Flare that you created. I actually had more success with Play Store with the zip integrated with the GApps.
First off, I highly recommend this mod to anyone because of it's amazing speed. I installed it as an upgrade from 2.3.4 and I really don't want to go back. So, I want to keep it, but I've run into some problems that I need your help with. I hope I don't get banned or anything for posting this here. My apologies if this should go somewhere else.
1. Any web browser I use, stock or dolphin mini, crash after accessing pages. Chrome installs, but crashes when I load a page "Unfortunately, Chrome has stopped."
2. When loading, Netflix goes back to my apps list after a second on the red splash screen.
Steps taken during install:
1. Formatted sd card to ext4
2. Then I followed the install instructions listed on the main page in red and black using "AlienMod Solar Flare Series V XXX 4.1.2 (DS).zip" through clockwork mod
3. After the install, I "Then flush Dalvik & fix permissions" according to your later instructions.
Could my crashing apps be related to flash content not loading? I'm really stumped here.
Thanks again for your hard work and I truly appreciate any input because I really don't want to use any other rom!
Yeah, there was a browser issue that popped up for a few people. It just kinda appeared in the port & I never could figure out what it was or why it wasn't consistent. As for the apps....shoot give it a try your way. Then the next time thru recovery just flush dalvik & reset permissions then.
Good JB Roms
Just wanted to drop a line for other non-devs who may be experimenting with JB Roms, and share my experiences. A couple months back, I was using only SilverL ROMS (swapping back and forth between CM 10 and AOKP). SilverL is doing some great work and still highly stable. I've been playing with tbalden's CM 10.1 rom recently though, because it is finally as stable as SilverL's and seems to have slightly better battery life and the camera seems sharper--also good video playback.
If you're looking for a more blingy ROM, WeekendsR2Short's recent PACMan release looks excellent, and has the coveted Rings widget as stock. I loved the look, but the settings UI was awkward with the split screen, and I kept having the settings crash if I tried to manage storage. Still, sweet ROM if you like the visuals over some (admittedly very minor) functionality.
All in all, I think all three of these devs deserve serious props for the progress they've made in these last short weeks. I am having a really hard time deciding between SilverL's AOKP (since I like the look) and TBalden's slightly more bulky CM10.1. I'm leaning toward tbalden just because I won't have to either splice in more ringtones or rely on SD access to get some decent ones. Arbitrary, I know. Kudos to all.
Cheers,
Wulf
P.S., on a side note, my 13-yr-old really wants to learn coding, and I thought AOSP or AOKP might be a good place to play. Any suggestions for getting him started?

Agreed, I've checked the forums on and off for months looking for stable daily driver mods without issues I felt would prohibit use of this phone compared to the stock roms, but the stuff out now with JB is damn usable. I've been using SilverL's unofficial CM10.1 for a little over 2 weeks myself as well, have seen little bugs already get fixed in that little time, and have almost 0 issues with it as a daily driver. Amazing, amazing work being done in this place. I'd been on stock GB fully locked non-rooted phone before this. Now that I saw more and more apps are finally requiring 4.X or higher I figured I'd check and see what's available here, and was not in the least disappointed! Kudos to all those involved in the hard work going on here!
The best rom is any stock optomized rom....at the same time sense gets dull and boring too look at so jb will liven it up but it will break features such as the crispy clean sense camera or internet passthrough fast boot time and others...depending on your outlook on things the best may be the one with more tweaks...or the most stable...all in all jb does things sense stock can't....sense stock also does things jb can't do...my battle is the sense camera...my how ide love it in a jb rom

Is there a ROM >4.1.1 without Sense which doesn't have multitasking issues?

Hey guys!
EDIT: Before someone gets me wrong: I am not ungrateful and I certainly do have respect for our developers! We have talented developers and I love their ROMs. That's why I use them. My described problem just seems to get overlooked.
As I mentioned before, my android usage relies heavily on multitasking. I always do several things simultaneously, or switch fast between them.
I am fairly new to the Sensation (switched from the Motorola Atrix 4G). I got my Sensation from my brother. Firmware 3.33 and CM9.
The first thing I did was flashing the Kit Kat ROM by @Sultanxda which is awesome, don't get me wrong, but multitasking is obviously broken. On all ROMs I tried except the Sense ROMs by Team Venom which feature a kernel by @SebastianFM.
Unfortunately I hate Sense, so they are not an option!
Let me explain what the problem is:
I like reading news articles or playing games while (!) listening to music or audio books or something.
So I start my music player. Awesome beats. Start reading news articles in Feedly when suddenly the player just stops and disappears from the statusbar. Obviously killed by the LMK.
Same thing happens with mini games like for example Dragon and Sword.
On my Atrix I had three services running. Always. Alongside the apps I actually used like music player and Feedly. They never got killed: Smart Status Bar, Battery Bar and Wave Launcher. I could count on all three apps. On my Sensation it takes probably 30 seconds for every service to get killed and disappear forever.
Happens always on all tested AOSP ROMSs, whereas on @ivicask's Sense 5 ROM for example everything is fine.
Why is that?
Is there a ROM without Sense and without multitasking issues?
I already copied the LMK Values from stock ROM but doesn't change anything. Tried different revisions of sultan kernel. No difference.
Currently I'm running MIUI v5 from @Mark376 which I absolutely love, but the multitasking problems annoy the hell out of me!

No, kid. I just want it to work how it is supposed to. This is not an iPhone. Multitasking shouldn't be an issue.
I'm just asking if there is a ROM whithout Sense and without these issues.
Your comment is unneccessarry. You shouldn't reply just because you think it is fun to spam. I am not the only Sensation user with these issues.

Spam is something else, this is just a breeze of common sense.

You know what else is a breeze of common sense? The expectancy of the ability to listen to music while doing something different than simply staring on album art or a launcher. This is a several hundreds dollar smartphone running Android, it's not a Sony Walkman.

I'm having that with no problem, but with Sense rom. If you hate Sense you should buy a different phone.

You are right: Sense ROMs do work properly. And I will switch phones if there is no other way, but first I will do everything I can to fix this one as long as I don't have to use Sense (or any other OEM framework besides MIUI). This is more efficient than the possibility of wasting money. Common sense as well
And that's why I'm asking for advice. For real advice. Jelly Bean ROMs are all called stable. None mentions multitasking as an issue. Maybe it's a user error, maybe not. I tend to think it's not, because other users have the same issues and my usage of AOSP ROMs doesn't differ from that of a Sense ROM.

Unfortunately swap doesn't satisfy my needs and the latest sultan kernel didn't fix the multitasking issues, so I switched back to my Motorola Atrix! Thanks for your help, though!
