Looks like the Sensation is going back - HTC Sensation

It's sad to say that the Sensation is far from Sensational.
Today I've probably used the phone the most out of the 4 days I've had it and it's been issue after issue.
Firstly, I added some more music to the phone, it refused to group the albums properly. Reset the cache and this caused all sound alerts and notifications to go haywire, resetting them to random tracks from my music collection.
Secondly, after resetting the ID3 tags several times with different software I'm now left with my music completely fragmented, the worst is an album of 42 tracks which the phone displays as 28 separate albums of the same name.
Also, I've been experiencing a lot of signal dropouts today. (Other phone on same network sat next to it on full signal)
On top of this, numerous "little things", e.g. interface is slow and unresponsive compared to SGS and SGS2, battery life is pretty rubbish when doing anything but standby, many default Android software stripped out.
I called HTC support, they didn't even know what model the phone was from the IMEI and could not offer any assistance with any issues. I asked if there were any planned software updates and the response was, "you already have the latest Android software 2.3"
It's a real shame because the design of the phone and the screen are superb, but HTC's software is terrible.

This is why I'm waiting till it's rooted and unlocked. Custom ROMs always fix such issues.

With the new bootloader, it could never happen?

Initial units could be buggy. You may try replacing this.

Woov. "..but HTC's software is terrible"
I'm really suprised to see that comment for an HTC phone. HTC's good at software. At least that's how they're known in many years.
Sorry but these little issues could happen on first units. I'm sure HTC's gonna fix these issues wiith updates. Right now you can use different music player and home launcher. Hope you can solve them.

Aww, I hate it when that happens to my iTunes library
I don't know what you mean about the interface being slow and unresponsive though. Granted, I'm using Launcher Pro rather than the stock launcher (mainly because I like to have a 5x7 grid to play with) but when I was using stock it seemed pretty speedy to me. The rest of the phone is definitely lightning fast.
I've been pleased with the battery life too. It's beating what I used to get on my Nexus One, and that always seemed enough for me.
As for stripped out software, I wouldn't mind swapping back to the stock android messaging app. But I prefer the Sense contacts and dialler. Not sure what else has changed really
Anyway, sad to see you're not enjoying it like I am

try to pull up your music on your PC in a tag editing program & see if it's all different in there. I use mp3tag to edit all of my music to match perfectly.

It reminds me of the Touch Pro 2, granted it was Windows which sucked ass, but HTC released the first version of the "full" Sense Skin as an update and it totally killed the phone. The software simply required power the hardware couldn't deliver.
To give you an example, I showed the phone to a guy on my dev team today who's not really very interested in phones. His first comment was "how come the Android UI isn't as smooth and fluid as the iPhone?" then I showed him the SGS running stock Gingerbread and he thought it was much smoother.
If you run this phone side by side with the Samsung devices, they piss all over it for UI speed and responsiveness, even the single core SGS1.

I've finally solved this one, it's due to the "Artist Album" tag which MUST be the same for all songs or HTC's player thinks they are in different albums.
Strange thing is this tag is not editable in any of my editors, but you can edit it via Windows Explorer.

Damn, what happened to the good old days when that would only happen when someone mentioned "I" and "Phone" in the same sentence.

Agree with you. That's a fact.
According to earlier HTC phones everyone knows Sense UI isnt that smooth but it is pretty fast and stable. That's another fact. For me speed and stability is more important. If there is a problem with them and you're saying there is, I have a problem too. I'm sure HTC is gonna fix these things. Because dual core is new and Android 2.3 doesn't support it naturally. So it needs time. But you're right there shouldn't be any lag on dual core phone like this.

Op has to understand that bugs are usually associated with early adaptors. Wouldn't hurt to do a swap.

But wouldn't a new device have the same issues?

philio are you serious?
i have the tbolt, and i love my phone, but when looking at sensation's specs, it really does blow my bolt away..
however my gf is planning on getting the sensation when it releases.
My point of view is, that if your submerge into the root world, a little drops here and there shouldn't be a big deal, as we all know there will be updates to fix this, not to mention your phone is future proofed for the next two years..
everyone only focuses on the negative but never the positive.. i think the only other phone in the market that is better then the sensation is sgs2.. and thats not even close to being out in the US..
enjoy your 2.3 ginger bread, 3.0 sense.. Unlike you, the majority of us HTCers are now just starting to use the leaked 2.3 and its not completely reliable, as well as using work in progess 3.0 sense which is not a complete port.
consider yourself very lucky to be using an HTC with technology that the rest of us are still waiting on..
spread the love not the hate, because people will always find something to ***** about..

I've come from a galaxy s, even with gingerbread on it I still much prefer my sensation, sure there will be bugs, like any new release, but I find the sensation a lot more of a polished experience, I'm actually using a lot more features getting more out of android than I did on the galaxy s.

Oh yes it will, as some others with similar having already been cracked.
This game is nothing new and even before Android, HTC played this same game with WM devices and they would also get cracked.

Being a SGS owner I really hope you're not saying the Sensation is as, or even more, laggy than a single core Galaxy S. That would be a huge disappointment.

Try mp3tag which is free and lets you edit all tags. Works for me

That is because he is comparing it to an SGS running AOSP Gingerbread which is completely tweaked in every way to optimize the ROM. Apples and oranges, apples and oranges. Imagine this phone with CM7 on it (which is what I'm sure his SGS is running). Can you say Sensation = M3, SGS = scooter?
Sucks it's not working out, but how you like a phone is ALL relative to what YOU like and feel about it.

Say Hello to a Confused and Recent HTC Convert

I just finally dumped Big Red and came over to AT&T (combined contracts with my wife). I'm going from the HTC Incredible and purchased the Sammy Captivate. I was very active back in the Dinc forum, and would consider myself "Advanced" - I did some development, but wasn't yet at the level of ROM Cooking.
I got over here to the Captivate - I'm confused as hell. I've followed my own advice and read forum after forum after forum before posting anything - the Cappy just seems like Greek to me.
Here's what I'm picking up:
1. GPS is spotty, but not for everyone. Mine has always been dead on, but then again I'm not a first-adopter of the Galaxy S. Perhaps it was a batch issue?
2. ROMs seem significantly harder to cook for the Cappy. I see a bunch of leaks from the Froyo build, but it looks half-done at best. Don't get me wrong, I'm running Cognition and I love it for day to day use. I had read a bit online about the lag issues, but I didn't imagine they would be *this* prominent even after rooting and removing bloatware.
That's about it, really. I'm checking back in the forums every day. I'm loving the hardware on this phone - the screen is fantastic, and when the Cappy is fast it's FAST. But I've gotta admit I'm fairly dissapointed thus far with some of the User Experience pieces. The Samsung overlay has some nice attributes (the swiping in Contacts is great, for one), but there are other bits that are wholly frustrating about this phone (WHY would they make the buttons at the bottom time out before the screen, forcing you to touch the screen to get the buttons lit up again??).
OH! And why did they switch "Home" and "Menu"??? I realize Samsung is a global company and that not all of their products are released Stateside, but it's still annoying.
I must apologize, this has turned from a general "how do you do" to a vent-fest. I'd love to hear from any experienced and new users alike. Thanks!
hi I just came from HTC too, I had the Aira, but I broke it. When I went to the ATT store, I saw the Captivate and decided to try it. I'm with you -- the hardware specs are great, screen is beautiful, camera is better than aria, etc. But the programming is lame, especially compared to aria. I haven't had an issue with the GPS, but there are a tons of software issues on this phone, such as wifi just not working at times, the exchange email client almost unusable, lack of languages, lag, and those lights at the bottom like you mentioned. HTC sense is wonderful.
I'm also having a hard time figuring out all of the ROMS and etc out there. I did install one of the lag fixes and it's made quite a difference. I also installed the HPUSA thing but I don't know how to tell if it's actually working. Anyway, install the lag fix, it will definitely help. And if anyone knows of a fix for the wifi, I'd love to know what it is (One would expect that it would just work out of the box).
What WiFi issues are you having? I can't even "see" any WPA networks. I have a Verizon FiOS router and can't see it because I'm assuming the WPA security. I tried switching to WEP though and still couldn't see it. I've search all over the web and XDA and can't seem to find anyone complaining of the same issue.

I haven't had any problems with Wifi and use WPA. I can see all of my networks (which are G, not N).
The button thing is kind of annoying, so I agree with you there. My GPS has been hit or miss, but I bought this phone used, so I'm not sure if it was a first batch model or not.
There's not much in the way of ROMs. There's stock and leaks, then there's Cognition and Eugene's, and that's about it. All of those are based on a leak or stock build, so they'll usually contain the same problems as the stock/leak build.
We're supposed to be getting a CyanogenMOD ROM sometime, or at least be able to port it...but I'm sure they can't do anything until Samsung releases the source for Froyo.
Anoter HTC convert here, but I came from the Pure.
GPS is definitely an issue. Mine improved with the OTA update to JH7. Its still not as accurate at highway speeds as the HTC.
HTC sense Rules compared to the UI in the Cappy. Im hoping that improvements will come as 2.2 is more widely adopted.

That has NOTHING to do with Samsung. At all.
Do a little research and you'll see almost every phone has a different arrangement of the four buttons.
Just going to answer the part of your question about the lag and lag fixes.
The lag on the galaxy s phones is the result of samsung using rfs file system - rfs has a much slower input/output read/write than ext* file systems generally found on linux distros. This is the lag that is being refereed to in the lag fixes.
so as long as samsung continues to put out official roms with rfs file system there will always be an opportunity for a "lag fix" with ext2 (i.e. ryanza's OCLF) or ext4 (i.e. voodoo).
hello_______
GPS is hit or miss, but on the FroYo leak it has gotten much better, unfortunately Samsung released the phones with brand new hardware and apparently didn't test...
The lag is as mentioned another Samsung fubar along the lines of using an inferior file system.
I think the reason for lack of ROMs is most people are waiting for FroYo to launch. We just got our first beta build leaked this week. Once source for the new kernel gets released, we should see a lot more activity as far as that goes.

I've done a lot of research, and I alluded to that point in my post. Survey the *American* market and empirically you will see that of the slate Android phones, most have the buttons in the order Home, Menu, Back, Search. And I would argue that it has everything to do with Samsung - unless you're implying that someone else designed the layout of the buttons on their device. After all, they are the reason the European variant of the i9000 has three buttons like the X10, correct?

Thanks, dayv. That's a good explanation and gives me some idea of where to go from here.
As for an update, turns out the WiFi issues were strictly hardware. After putting in a bridge with my FiOS router and still not getting any improvement, I took it back to Best Buy and swapped it out. Connected the second I got home. Unfortunately, the touch buttons were totally borked and I had to do a battery pull three times in 20 minutes because apparently the buttons would "touch themselves when they thought of me." In other words, you could see the buttons flash on and off, feel the haptic go crazy, and all kinds of strange stuff on the screen. Yet another swapout and I'm good to go.
I also installed Eugene's Frankin-Twiz last night - it really helped improve just about everything. Hardly any lag at all and I'm liking the associated themes available. GPS on my new device works great too.

I imagine we can also add to this that the Captivate has only been out for not quite 3 months if I recall correctly. So between the newness and people holding their breath for Froyo I could understand people's hesitancy to invest a lot of time and energy in making a soon to be outdated ROM.
came from a tilt2 which is/was? still trying to develop android..it was pretty good but wow i can never go back to windows phone after that mess. freggin love this captivate thou...when it doesnt break lol. ive never had a phone that i seem to get ALL the known issues with and still decide to stick with getting a new one instead. I miss sense somedays but overall i still am willing to stick with a less "bogged down" OS that i can practically do the same with. if i can make the phone do what i need faster then screw the pretty screen gadgets lol

I'm sorry but I to came from the htc aria, awesome little phone. I bought the aria because I thought the sense ui was pretty awesome. After using Cyanogen mods on the aria and playing with other launchers and now playing with tw launcher, sorry but sense ui is crap and for noobs . I got over the whole sense ui about a week of owning the aria and wasn't able to use it after adw and launcher pro.
Sorry had to post it. I just don't feel you can use an androids phone ui to bash another phone. I have only seen a few who use any androids phone stock ui any way and I'm one of them and as basic as it is it still makes sense ui look a babies toy.

Not a chance lol the aria is awesome for its size but doesn't come close to the captivate , that's just my imo though. Only problem I have had with captivate is gps and I really don't use gps, so not that big of deal. The aria, like I said awesome for its size, just has to small of processor to do what the captivate can do. Most things lag on the aria games and movies almost un playable. I love my captivate.
I had bought an iphone4 for my wife to replace her old iphone. Well long story short , I turned a "i will not use anything else but iphone ! " the iphone 4 went back two weeks of having it cause of to many problems to we booth own captivates now and shes sold.

besides the gps.... i am very satisfied. here is why.....
I woke up this morning and opened allshare to stream music from my synology diskstation. Got in the car and loaded up bluetooth to my moto speakerphone/radio transmitter. Put my captivate in my proclipusa mount and Loaded up pandora to stream to my car stereo... Loaded up the navigation for testing purposes and was on my way...
Both worked without issue on the commute in.. rocking to guerrillla radio and limp bizkit. Got some tweets and emails... and the phone took it like... IS THAT ALL YOU GOT!!!!
My blackberry 9700 would have exploded and for sure the "r" key would have flew straight into my forehead... where then people would ask me why i have an R indented in my head... is it for Retard?
I rate the phone 95% out of 100%. If you really have that much to complain about then you will never be happy with any phone.....
p.s. - for people who have captivates that reboot or shutoff, that has to be a defect and you need to get it replaced. My phone has never rebooted or shutoff by itself.
p.s.s. Gps isn't great... but the phone does everything else i need really well.
rant over.

This has been a really stable rom with HSUPA enabled(no bluetooth issues) good GPS (for me) and a nice theme.
It is an international rom so all of the att crap is gone. No need for the sideloading crap.
I tried Cog beta 1,2, and 3 and F-T and I'm back to this rom. It's good for me until we get a good stable 2.2 rom.

That's an interesting question. The aria costs a lot less than the captivate. As far as hardware goes, the captivate is superior: 16 GB RAM, the screen is awesome, the speaker is better (ringtones sound nicer) and the quality of phone calls, at least for me, is a lot better than the aria. Oh and the camera is LOT better on the captivate. I haven't had issues with the GPS (the aria locked on a little faster, but captivate performs well). The issues with wireless for me are really frustrating, but others don't seem to have an issue (wireless sometimes works, sometimes doesn't even though it's connected, I have no idea why).
Based on my experience, I'd rather have the captivate. It definitely takes more tweaking than the aria but in the 1 week I've had it, I think I got everything worked out. I definitely liked the sense UI and email client on the aria, but I can live with the UI and stuff on the captivate considering how much better the hardware is.
If anyone has any idea about how to fix wireless, I'd really appreciate it.
Yeah I'm not gonna lie, we really don't have much of choice on at&t . To me we only have two choices right now Aria or captivate. If at&t got a htc equivalent to the captivate then I would have a hard choice .

First of all man, there are a lot of these threads and assuming you choose to come and join our community in the future, searching before posting would be a must.
That said, I've owned four Android phones: a HTC Magic (MyTouch 3G), a Samsung Epic 4g, a HTC Evo 4G, and the Google Nexus S. Each phone had its quirks and each phone had its niceties but by far my favorite of those phones is the Nexus S. Hands down, no question. I love having complete control over my phone and doing that with the Nexus S is as simple as executing a single ADB command: fastboot_oem_unlock. The phone was designed to be hacked and modded to the hearts content and if you find you are bored with the walled garden that is Apple Inc. then the Nexus S is quite a decent choice.
Their are, however, things to consider: The Nexus S does not support "4G", it does support HSPA which is faster than 3G and it does benefit from the increased speed of T-Mobile's "4G". Also, being on the bleeding edge of the Android community means that there are bugs. For example, there was the infamous SMS bug that has since been resolved. The nice side of being on said bleeding edge is that we are also the first to get important fixes. I find its a happy medium.
Another thing to consider is that there are dual-core phones coming out starting next month. Its important to note that until Honeycomb, no dual-core Android device will be optimized for multi-processor architecture nor are there any real reasons besides wanting to have a battery that lasts only a few hours yet.
There. That is all I have to say on the subject and I hope that I helped.

Yea there a few benefits to the phone. The best part of the nexus is it is supported by Google so you'll get the latest updates, especially honeycomb. One thing you may want to consider is no 720p video recording, well none yet but I think that'll come soon. The resolution is higher on iPhone they have gotten to point that you really don't notice much of a difference between the two. The market is pretty awesome on both already. Battery with nexus and gingerbread is pretty awesome. Another cool thing is the new maps with navigation, I love Google's navigation. Speeds with tmo, at least for me, are awesome. The best part of all is development. The guys here can make some awesome stuff and you can customize every tiny little thing on the phone. I would recommended the nexus, its sleek, fast, attracts attention (if you want that ) and the best part is not to many people have it so you'll have a very interesting, unique phone.

The signal issue has been shown to be due to an issue with the way the phone deals with extended periods of searching for a signal. The app NoBars is free and prevents it entirely while also helping cut down on battery drain from searching for a signal. The other issues sound like something to do with a mod you're running and shouldn't be blamed on your phone. I've had maybe two forced reboots since finding a stable combination of rom and kernel.

Saw your thread get a little off topic. How is the Nexus S? Since you already have a Galaxy Tablet, then you pretty much know how Android works. The Nexus S performs exceptionally well with 2.3 Gingerbread and is solid, almost to where it takes the fun out of having the device. Everything looks great, and works great. I have yet to experience the problems that other users are having. The physical body is the most ergonomic design for any phone that I have used to date. The moot point is right now there is not much development going on for the Nexus S yet. However, it is easily the best device out there right now pre-dualcore.
My history is as follows respectively: iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, G1, Blackberry Bold 2, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, Nexus One, HTC HD2, Samsung Vibrant, Nexus S.

Weird. I've never had to reboot, nor have I had signal or dropped call issues on my NS and I'm in Australia
IMO, if you thought the Nexus One was good, this is 100x better. I just can't get over how black the screen is - looks like its just a continuous screen when you have a black wall paper or starfield live wallpaper!
Speed is also awesome. I've not had to unlock, root and use setcpu yet. Doesnt get better than this!

Just to say, my Nexus S is 100% stock, no mods, no launchers, no anything. Yesterday I had to reboot 1x because the browser froze completely (and wouldn't work after force closing it.... im thinking data was frozen) 1x because voice and messaging stopped working (it failed to send a txt and wouldn't make a call) and 1x because Gmail would open an random app other than itself. It opened tapatalk. After force closing both apps, clicking gmail would open messaging. to play my own devils advocate, I was at work yestrday where signal bumps from E to 3G in the one particular room im in alot.

I've just moved from iPhone 3GS to Nexus S and I love it! I'm totally new to Android so I'm just spending some time exploring the stock ROM before I start fiddling. The only known bug that I've experienced is the phantom long Home button press that randomly brings up the Recent Apps screen. That was just one evening, though, and it hasn't done it since. I find the keyboard a bit fiddly but that's probably just me - I was still rubbish at typing on the iPhone keyboard after 2 years...
It's difficult to compare battery life between the 3GS and the Nexus because I just can't put the Nexus down

I've just spent several hours setting up my new Nexus S, and I'm very impressed with the Google experience. First thing that happened right out of the box was an ota...must admit that was nice. As others in the boards have mentioned, the stock launcher is buggy. I had a problem with icons not staying where I put them, or disappearing. But I already had a paid copy of Launcher Pro and it runs great. Battery life appears to be amazing compared to my old Vibrant.

[Q] What will I miss besides sense??

I'll probably be changing to AT&T and the Infuse 4G, coming from Sprint and an Evo 4G. I know I wont se anything like sense, besides the LauncherPro Sense Theme, and Sense is something I will greately miss a lot :'( but I just want to know what other features I might not see on the Infuse, and if possible also the benefits from switching. Also, is android 2.3.3 available for it? Cause I've been told its still on 2.2. And finally, testing an Infuse at an AT&T store I was unable to download music, it said the file was not supported (an mp3 file...) can the phone download music?? Or will I have to transfer music from my pc?
Sorry for all the questions, but those are the only thoughts/doubts keeping me from switching today as soon as stores open.
you might miss not having an FM radio. and the hdim requires An adapter that you might forget to carry. there is 2.3.3 on the Rogers infuse, soon the firmware will be flashable to the att infuse. now there is a custom rom beta and the final version is in there works that is 2.3.3
the mp3 problem is something that i haven't experienced but some people report it as an issue if the phone is on too long it starts giving file not supported error, i don't know why but i don't have that problem. this phone actually supports more codecs and wrappers than phones from any other manufacturer without 3rd party software. you can definitely download music too it. it also has a hifi headphone amp. multimedia is basically the focus of this and the galaxy s line.
Once you've realized the negative performance impact Sense had on your phone you probably won't miss it either.
Sense was a massive improvement for Windows Mobile phones. It was a minor improvement to the early Android user interface, but these days it's just a bloated step backwards.
as far as 2.3 goes, there is a beta rom in the dev section, and there is also an official AT&T update coming in the next few weeks.
I too came from Sprint / Evo 4G. Here are the pros / cons as I see them, in order of importance to me.
Pros
Battery life
Thin form factor
Weight
Screen
Network speed
Voice / data simultaneously
Cons
GPS
Game compatibility
Speaker volume

lets wait on a better release with a fully working kernel, gps didnt work for me at first. i got mine working good by starting with the jz3 mod and changing a few things, it wouldn't seem to work without secure socket on the supl settings enabled, i took the last two lines out of the gps.conf from jz3.
Only thing I have to add is that the inability to download certain file types may be compounded by the infuse but is also a known froyo issue.
The best work around I've seen for the majority of people is to install astro file manager and then in preferences check the box labeled "enable browser download".
Step by step... install astro, open it, press menu button, scroll down to "Enable browser download", check that and press the back button until you've exited the app. This will act much like the built in download manager in gingerbread. If you have trouble locating downloads that used to go to the tapatalkxdapre folder look in the normal download folder.

I agree as well. The first time you use Sense, it's like wow! Look how beautiful it is. After you try something else, you'll like how clean it is and how much the bells and whistles bog the device down. I now call Sense bloat .
i dont think sense is beautiful at all. it has a cool weather widget, that's it. the launcher is ugly, the menus have too many options, the colors are ugly, too many greys, really outside of the widget i dont see anything about sense that says wow. thoguh vanilla android was pretty gross untill gingerbread came out. touch wiz is ok but i like the hybrid of tw3+tw4 icons+aosp status bar and icons in gtg's rom. that should be what the phone looks like out of the box. and there should be some better widgets.

Can you wait just a bit ? Samsung is releasing the Galaxy S2 on ATT sometime in August or early September the latest.
That phone will be much better than the Infuse, plus have tons of developers supporting.
I might switch to the S2 on ATT too, Sprint's service is really going down. 3G speeds are super bad, like 100k/sec at times in Chicago. And 4G if you can keep a signal is the slowest 4G compared to Verizon's LTE and ATT HSPE

Well first off, i want to thank everybody for their replies, and second appologize for not replying Ive been a little bussy , so after reading all of the replies and asking around ppl who switched to the infuse, Im more convinced than ever that it wont be any dissapointment in any aspect to get an infuse since it would practically be an upgrade. For the speaker, ill miss my Evo's since its sooooo loud, I use the PowerAmp EQ and an app called Equalizer and it really boosts the volume, I'll surely be trying it on the Infuse and see if its any louder. Also as gregj100 mentioned game compatibility, I hope the games I love and really use do work on the phone. Aside from that, if I ever do miss Sense, I read theres a solution: download LauncherPro and download the SenseUI theme, so Im good with that. And as far as music, in any case I'd just transfer it from my pc if the phone doesnt want to download a song for some reason , so yeah Im really looking forward to the switch to the Infuse ;D once again thanks to everyone for the helpful replies.

I agree with u that AT&T is better and much much faster, plus here at home Sprint reception is horrible and they suggested an "Airave" system which I'd have to pa an extra $5 a month, its like im paying to get bad reception and I have to pay even more to get good reception -_-, but anywas I just dont like the 2GB limit, but I can get used to it since I wont use data at home cause I have WiFi ;D, so as far as AT&T Vs Sprint I have no problem switching there either, and as for Galaxy S2, I never was a Galaxy fan but the S2 is really a great improvement, now I'd just have to get used to the square at the bottom instead of all 4 keys (home, menu, back, search) though I never really used search.

Disappointment of ICS upgrade

Just to make things clear, I've not got the Sensation ICS upgrade yet - but I've become a lot less enthusiastic about it after seeing the screenshots.
To me, it still looks almost identical. Under the hood I'm sure the changes are numerous. And sure there are some changes to some aspects of the GUI, but it's really not the wholesale change that stock ICS brought in with the nice cool blue holo theme on the Galaxy Nexus. I know HTC want the differentiation in their handsets, but I have to say, for the first time in my Android life, I'm thinking about rooting and whether my next Android phone will be an HTC at all....
It just looks a bit tired and dated. The HTC One X looks nice on paper (although I wish it had the AMOLED screen of the S), but the screenshots when it shows the software are making me yawn.
I'm interested to hear if others feel the same or whether they are still excited about the upgrade. Maybe it's just me!?!
Anyway, I'm off to read about rooting I'd be interested to hear what you think the best ICS ROMs are.
And it's going to be exactly the same with other manufacturer phones too such as samsung who will do the same and put their software on top.
It brings a lot of nice little changes does ICS and definitely worth the upgrade. If you didn't want Sense then get an AOSP rom installed or buy a pure android phone.
Sense is very good though and feel it adds a lot to the phone that stock android can't do.
Phil
Thanks for your reply Phil. I must admit, I was hoping the SGS3 wouldn't have too much crap put on it - it could well be my next phone if it's relatively "clean".
Before ICS, I completely agree - Sense added a lot for me and made the whole system consistent and a pleasure to use. But since getting an Asus Transformer Prime and having stock ICS (pretty much), I've realised that as of ICS, there isn't really anything that Sense adds for me anymore. Google has basically implemented all the Sense stuff I liked, and has moved the interface on at the same time (which HTC doesn't seem to be doing).
Of course, this is all personal opinion....
Thanks for the heads up on AOSP. I think I need to read up on how to do it and what kind of stability it has on the Sensation.
This is what I thought as well. The UI changes are minimal. A few changes here and there, and everything looks more minimalistic. I was very excited about the new lock screen on Android, but we didn't even get that What I do like, though is how much faster the phone is now, and the face unlock screen is awesome.
However, I will never ever use a custom rom on this. Def not worth shortening it's life-cycle.
I like Sense but it's not very well integrated with ICS, it seems a lot more disjointed than it was with Gingerbread. I'm considering just going with stock ICS for the consistency.
I don't like a lot of the changes to Sense such as the quick launch bar thing on the home screen, I much preferred it before. The shots of Sense on the One X look a hell of a lot nicer though so hopefully that'll make me happy.
different people have different tastes.
while ics might not be so captivating to some, but others look at it as a huge step forward from gingerbread. i personally dont look at ui changes and other personalization stuff. i decide to buy or not based on the hardware. OP said the one X is not as impressive as the one S. (if that's what the S stands for) but if u look deeper, one X only hoists tegra 3 while the one S has qualcomms latest krait s4 which is obviously faster than tegra 3. but screens aside, the one S dont amuse me at all. it only has a crappy pentile matrix which carries images that are not so sharp and sometimes blurred edges..
that said, different people has different tastes..

I really think ICS is one of those things you really need to experience and try it before voicing your opinions on it. I didn't think I'd like it as it looked ugly in pictures, but I can't imagine going back to GB now that I've been using it.

Just use nova launcher.
I think the ICS upgrade has been awesome so far. I isntalled a script to "remove sense" that was in the android revolution thread in the development section, and it's been great. HTC theme is still there (just no sense launcher/lock screen), and I use the nova lock screen and it seems to me, to be better than stock android in this configuration.
The phone's faster, the chrome browser is great, nova launcher is awesome. I was looking forward to a new phone, but not anymore. The new ones coming out arent that much better.

When I was talking about the S being better - I meant the AMOLED screen - and that alone. I can't use the Sensation as a bedside clock because of light bleed, but my old Desire with the AMOLED screen was great at this. The colours were also really vibrant - although a bit less realistic.

It means that if you use a custom rom that is not stable, and it overclocks your phone, the hardware will not function properly for as long as it would with stock rom. If anything is incorrectly "set" it will cause problems with the hardware, and this will eventually damage it. This doesn't concern leaked stock roms.
I've flashed my previous model as it was so cheap anyway, but with $400 phone I will not take the risk.

The Super LCD2 in the one X is better than the super amoled in the GNex! Search YouTube for one X vs GNex. The super LCD 2 is full RGB not pentile 720p display ( ips technology) with excellent viewing angles and vibrant colours. Watch some reviews and you will see what I'm talking about. I was a fan of Super Amoled until I saw the display of the one X.

But you don't have to overclock, it's in your control with apps like SetCPU etc. Anyway, it'll only decrease the life if you leave it on a very high clock speed for a long period of time, basically, you'll have likely upgraded/lost/broken your phone before overclocking kills it from what I understand.

Yeah but how many of these people REALLY keep an eye on the phone's hardware and keep changing the cpu settings back and forth? I would guess not too many, unless you know what you're doing. I'm not claiming that overclocking will kill your phone instantly or anything like that.. It'd take months, or even years till that happened (depending on how high you've set it).
But even still, for some models there are some experimental / unfinished roms that have loads of bugs; the phone screen keeps flashing, it reboots randomly etc.. I cannot help but think this cannot be good for the hardware.

Keep an eye on the hardware as in check whether it's overheating or feeling too warm?
You don't need need to change the CPU settings back and forth though, they can just be set to Max 1600MHz and a Min of 384MHz and then select 'Set on Boot'.
True, those probably aren't great for the hardware but who would (or even could) use those kind of Pre-Alpha ROM's for more than a day even?

I have never heard of a single case of somebody shortening the life of their phone because they rooted and used a custom rom. I know people have bricked their phones in the ATTEMPT to to root or flash a new rom, but that's not the same thing. I just don't buy your theory, sorry. As for the OP, if you don't like ICS because you've used it for a week and prefer GB, that's good. But if you don't like it because of what you've HEARD or read, that's just pointless, as others here have already posted.

Actually the development bit would be Sensation Android Development forum. This bit is called Sensation General which is described as: "Discussion about HTC Sensation (general chat, tips & tricks, etc)". The "general chat" bit should give it away if that wasn't clear enough for you.

you're so full of fail... this whole forum, as in xda-developers.com is a place for, you guessed it - developers. I don't think chatting about something you haven't even tried counts

I'm not "giving you a favor" (whatever that means). And as I said, I may well get another brand of phone - I actually wrote that in my original post. The point of the post was simply to gauge peoples reaction to HTCs efforts in porting ICS - as per the "general discussion" which this forum is designed for.

you made it sound like it was a huge deal to root a phone, and now, for the first time in your life, you're going to go ahead and start reading about it. We already have numerous threads that deal with "reactions." How can you even have a "reaction" to something you haven't tried?

Honestly, I've used every version of sense... 1.0, 2.1, 3.0, 3.5, 3.6, AND 4. Sure, 4 is great. I do like it, it's a lot simpler than the others. (HTC said they felt Sense became bloated themselves.) However, I do believe that Sense 3.6 is a very nice version of Sense. It's not at all disjointed in my opinion like I have seen others say, I mean... compared to Sense 2.1 maybe... BUT Sense 2.1 didn't have any of the 3D or extra gloss that 3.0, 3.5, and 3.6 have. I feel that they really redesigned the Sense interface rather well for ICS and they integrated all of the things from the previous builds that made Sense great, plus some. I was actually thinking if 4.0 came out for Sensation I might even stay with 3.6 because it's a well built, stable version of Sense. They did a great job with the new button sliders, the new notification area looks, etc. I love it over GB Sense.

Terrible.

After a week with this phone my general consensus is that it works terribly.
First, let me say the hardware is great and the industrial design, the look, is top notch and the only reason I still have the phone.
HTC has really made this phone bad and AT&T hasn't helped by not letting us put our own rom on it to fix the major issues.
Firstly, Gmail push email only works when it wants to work. This is a 2007 issue that's been solved for half a decade.
When I leave my house and I try to use data, the phone shows as still being connected to my WiFi and therefore no data will work. So I have to manually turn wifi off.
Multitasking? Yea right. At first I was puzzled as to why after switching back to an app it would restart. Was the phone running out of RAM? Doesn't it have 1GB? Turns out it's a software thing. Again, multitasking was an issue solved in 2007.
These are the only major issues with this device, and they are major because it affects me multiple times a day.
If this phone didn't have great hardware and look awesome I would have returned it the same day.
The fact that these issues can all be solved by flashing another rom gives me hope that this will someday be a useable device.
Just needed to rant.

I have to admit: the multitasking thing really bothers me. I can't duplicate it on my Gnex and that alone makes me wonder about this phone. It seems to go against everything Android stands for. If I wanted a phone that saves states, I'd use my iPhone.
Love the camera on this phone and the screen is amazing. I love some of Sense's customizations such as the Facebook and Twitter integration in contacts, but they seem to have kind of ruined ICS. My GSM Gnex got just as good battery life with full blown multitasking.

Do you know if we would use cm7 or any other custom rom that we would be able to multitask properly? That is bothering me as well. It keeps reloading everything. If the hardware wasnt so nice, it would have gone back already.
I would imagine so. I think Sense is prematurely killing apps to save memory.

seriously??
its obviously whatever they set as the default mem manager and how aggresive they set it, probably to do with the scheduler too
i can replicate that behaviour on my cappy by adjusting mem manager to aggresive....so..i wouldnt fault the phone. theyll either adjust it in an update due to feedback, or we can just control it ourselves once we are all on a custom rom.
you shoulda known this if youve ever run any sort of custom rom....one would think. but now you do....so fret no you must young padiwan, good things coming they are, wait you must.

I have no doubt that something like Cyanogenmod would resolve this, but I don't want to install a custom rom and shouldn't have to. The phone should work correctly without hacking it.
From the few responses I have seen from HTC reps that users have contacted, they don't seem to think this is a problem. They claim this is "how multitasking is intended to function". That tells me a fix will not be forthcoming.

I'm not trying to troll, but how do so many people that want to run stock end up on xda lol? I love the hacking & experimenting aspect of Android. That being said, I don't really see any problems with the multi-tasking outside of the browser reloading so much (I've been using Firefox more anyway & it works fine). My galaxy nexus wasn't that much better either. Could htc have done a better job? Sure, probably. But the phone is pretty impressive, multi-tasking issues aside.

You may have noticed (or not, depending on how observant you are) that not every post on here is about hacking, modding, and rooting. Some people actually come here to talk about the phones, report bugs, compare notes, ask questions, etc.
Multitasking is much worse than a browser refresh. Start up Pandora or Slacker and let them run in the background. They will die. Start a game and then open a few other apps and come back to the game and it will completely reload and lose all progress. This is not how Android multitasking is supposed to work.
And I'm sorry, but waiting for a custom rom to make this phone work correctly is like buying a Macbook Air, getting nonstop kernel panics and hoping that someone will release a version of Linux that you can install on it to make it run correctly.

I do understand that there are plenty of non-development threads given that this is in "general". Nobody is making you keep the phone and wait for a fix either. But you are right, it is a vital function of the phone and you would expect it to perform as it's supposed to. Every phone I've owned has had some kind of flaw or quirk and the developers here do an awesome job fixing them as well as making the phone better in almost every aspect fairly quickly.
*Edit - So after thinking about it, I realized that I haven't really used the multi-tasking feature all that much and decided to put it through some tests. Apparently it does suck lol so I apologize ...using home to exit current app then going back to a previously used app via the launcher does work a little better, but there is definitely some work to be done
Rants are good. Gets the word out on issues that hopefully get resolved.
At least be accurate with your rant. From a little googling the Tmobile G1 was release in 2008 and Gmail push was released in 2009, not 2007.
I have never really understand why htc...spend money make their own sense android... and they know people will try anything to get aosp back...
also those people who has galaxy nexus and tries to port sense...UI....god...they must have time....
I went to a store to try this device tonight. The hardware and screen are simply awesome. Sense even looks nice and the UI was lightning quick. It is really disappointing that basic things like WiFi-3G handoff and multitasking are not working right...things I've taken for granted for awhile on CyanogenMod. I agree with others, I was hoping to not have to mess with custom ROMs at all, by now it should just work great out of the box. Now I have to monitor the software situation here and compare to the SGSIII when it's released.

on the other side....hehe
Multitasking is the only system/device problem that everyone has. I have zero wifi issues and zero push issues. Not everyone got stuck with a buggy One X. Just sayin.
