so..How is nexus s? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently sold my Iphone 3gs ...got bored with it, and I am looking for another device, and I came across Iphone 4 vs nexus s. I have been researching quiet a bit, reading reviews and comparisons on both devices and I think I am gonna go with nexus s just because apple boring as hack, and I have galaxy tab and it is so much more fun playing with android device, so I want unbiased opinion of those who are actually using the phone right now cuz specs and features are solid and unquestionable.

First of all man, there are a lot of these threads and assuming you choose to come and join our community in the future, searching before posting would be a must.
That said, I've owned four Android phones: a HTC Magic (MyTouch 3G), a Samsung Epic 4g, a HTC Evo 4G, and the Google Nexus S. Each phone had its quirks and each phone had its niceties but by far my favorite of those phones is the Nexus S. Hands down, no question. I love having complete control over my phone and doing that with the Nexus S is as simple as executing a single ADB command: fastboot_oem_unlock. The phone was designed to be hacked and modded to the hearts content and if you find you are bored with the walled garden that is Apple Inc. then the Nexus S is quite a decent choice.
Their are, however, things to consider: The Nexus S does not support "4G", it does support HSPA which is faster than 3G and it does benefit from the increased speed of T-Mobile's "4G". Also, being on the bleeding edge of the Android community means that there are bugs. For example, there was the infamous SMS bug that has since been resolved. The nice side of being on said bleeding edge is that we are also the first to get important fixes. I find its a happy medium.
Another thing to consider is that there are dual-core phones coming out starting next month. Its important to note that until Honeycomb, no dual-core Android device will be optimized for multi-processor architecture nor are there any real reasons besides wanting to have a battery that lasts only a few hours yet.
There. That is all I have to say on the subject and I hope that I helped.

Yea there a few benefits to the phone. The best part of the nexus is it is supported by Google so you'll get the latest updates, especially honeycomb. One thing you may want to consider is no 720p video recording, well none yet but I think that'll come soon. The resolution is higher on iPhone they have gotten to point that you really don't notice much of a difference between the two. The market is pretty awesome on both already. Battery with nexus and gingerbread is pretty awesome. Another cool thing is the new maps with navigation, I love Google's navigation. Speeds with tmo, at least for me, are awesome. The best part of all is development. The guys here can make some awesome stuff and you can customize every tiny little thing on the phone. I would recommended the nexus, its sleek, fast, attracts attention (if you want that ) and the best part is not to many people have it so you'll have a very interesting, unique phone.

I just want to chime in and say I've noticed the need to reboot my nexus daily at minimum. Just for the signal hang ups, dropped connections and other software issues. Love the phone but just getting tired of it.

The signal issue has been shown to be due to an issue with the way the phone deals with extended periods of searching for a signal. The app NoBars is free and prevents it entirely while also helping cut down on battery drain from searching for a signal. The other issues sound like something to do with a mod you're running and shouldn't be blamed on your phone. I've had maybe two forced reboots since finding a stable combination of rom and kernel.

Yea I forgot that problem but mine disconnects as well. I'm try the no bars app to see how that works. The problem is annoying but the great thing is Google fixes things pretty quickly so I'm sure they'll get something soon.

Saw your thread get a little off topic. How is the Nexus S? Since you already have a Galaxy Tablet, then you pretty much know how Android works. The Nexus S performs exceptionally well with 2.3 Gingerbread and is solid, almost to where it takes the fun out of having the device. Everything looks great, and works great. I have yet to experience the problems that other users are having. The physical body is the most ergonomic design for any phone that I have used to date. The moot point is right now there is not much development going on for the Nexus S yet. However, it is easily the best device out there right now pre-dualcore.
My history is as follows respectively: iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, G1, Blackberry Bold 2, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, Nexus One, HTC HD2, Samsung Vibrant, Nexus S.

Weird. I've never had to reboot, nor have I had signal or dropped call issues on my NS and I'm in Australia
IMO, if you thought the Nexus One was good, this is 100x better. I just can't get over how black the screen is - looks like its just a continuous screen when you have a black wall paper or starfield live wallpaper!
Speed is also awesome. I've not had to unlock, root and use setcpu yet. Doesnt get better than this!

Just to say, my Nexus S is 100% stock, no mods, no launchers, no anything. Yesterday I had to reboot 1x because the browser froze completely (and wouldn't work after force closing it.... im thinking data was frozen) 1x because voice and messaging stopped working (it failed to send a txt and wouldn't make a call) and 1x because Gmail would open an random app other than itself. It opened tapatalk. After force closing both apps, clicking gmail would open messaging. to play my own devils advocate, I was at work yestrday where signal bumps from E to 3G in the one particular room im in alot.

I've just moved from iPhone 3GS to Nexus S and I love it! I'm totally new to Android so I'm just spending some time exploring the stock ROM before I start fiddling. The only known bug that I've experienced is the phantom long Home button press that randomly brings up the Recent Apps screen. That was just one evening, though, and it hasn't done it since. I find the keyboard a bit fiddly but that's probably just me - I was still rubbish at typing on the iPhone keyboard after 2 years...
It's difficult to compare battery life between the 3GS and the Nexus because I just can't put the Nexus down

Pardon? I'm not sure what you're asking. That term in the context I stole from my friend who has an iPhone which she said during a debate about whether ios or android was superior. I have comcast internet and cable but I despise them and I've never worked for them. I have worked for best buy but I quit because the attitude towards employees was just horrible.

I've just spent several hours setting up my new Nexus S, and I'm very impressed with the Google experience. First thing that happened right out of the box was an ota...must admit that was nice. As others in the boards have mentioned, the stock launcher is buggy. I had a problem with icons not staying where I put them, or disappearing. But I already had a paid copy of Launcher Pro and it runs great. Battery life appears to be amazing compared to my old Vibrant.

Just ordered my HTC Inspire 4G

Just ordered my Inspire 4G. I'm coming from the Captivate. I can't wait for a functioning GPS.
I was going to wait until the Infuse came out until I saw today that DG / Design Gears ditched the Atrix and picked up the Inspire. Can't wait to see what he can do with it. I ran both Cog and Perception on my Captivate. However I'm currently running Serendipity.
Now to pick a custom Inspire ROM to go with...
You won't need it~
Unless if you're into MIUI, stock works just fine! If you're itching for the extra features, Android Development has a bunch of reoriented stock with better speeds.
Cheers on your new Inspire!
a fellow UK fan...nice to see! Do you go to UK??
and that is awesome news about DG coming to the Inspire. I felt like Captivate section really slowed down when he left. He did some big things for the Atrix, so i definitely can't wait to see what he brings to the table for the Inspire.

I'm the type that can't leave stuff alone. I'm always willing to try something new. I'll probably leave it as stock for a little while just to make sure I'm going to keep it.
Hi, enjoy your Inspire! You made an excellent choice.I just got mine also. I'm loving it. I won't install a custom ROM but I might root this one...not sure, though.

A big UK fan. No, I didn't go to UK. However I'm thinking about going back to school, and that's where I'd go.
I agree. Once DG focused on the Atrix, the Captivate forums slowed down. He's got a ROM already in the works for the Inspire that's being beta tested.
How bout that john wall guy? Oh wait... anyway congrats on the upgrade you'll be surprised @ how smooth it is out of the box... and now we have di11igaf, adamholden, DG... good time to be an inspire user

thats awesome...can't wait to try it out. Its weird because with my captivate, i started out with DG's roms, then moved to Adam's roms, and ended up sticking with dill1's roms towards the end.
But, i assure you, coming from the captivate you will be VERY pleasantly surprised with how amazing this phone is out of the box. I thought it was going to be a little sluggish when i was setting it up, but once i used it for awhile and things fell into place, it has been amazing. the Sense UI is downright amazing, and i can finally see what all the hype is about.
I'm still trying to talk myself in to swapping my cappy out but I can't do it. Its been 5 days since my wife got her inspire and the complaints I have so far are the speakerphone stinks so much static on both ends and the volume is quite low on full blast. No swype. My cheek hangs up the phone alot. For some reason the screen turns on midcall and my cheek touches the call button?? When we aren't hanging up on people its constantly dropping calls. No 4g coverage. Its heavy. the battery life is less than desirable and that damn battery cover has taken 2 years off my life. It only has 8gb out of the box,ill have that filled in 10 minutes.as far as gps it does perform ok not great, but it will never outperform my tom tom. I think ill wait for the infuse 4g to arrive and see if that is enough for me to upgrade. My wife is fairly happy with it so its up to her if she wants to keep it so I guess my feelings on it are meaningless!

sounds like a bad unit. I am experiencing none of those issues.
Yeah I don't have that many problems with my phone either. There are audio fixes in the development section that can fix the speaker issue. Other than that, after I switched to TCPs rom, my battery would last me more than a day oppose to 3/4 of a day.

The low volume issue is related to some kind of adaptive program. If you notice, the sound will be low in the very beginning, then it will increase to a louder state. I haven't discovered the settings for it yet, though. Tried checking/unchecking the pocket mode and quiet ring on pickup but didn't make any difference.
The battery door is super tight on mine also. But I don't mind it, myself. It feels very secure. I've decided to just get a dock to conveniently charge it instead of changing out batteries...lol
The 8GB card is a class 4 instead of a crappy class 2. That is a plus in my book. But I still have a 16GB ordered.

I was going to create my own epic bread, but seeing as how this was already on the front page I figured I'd jump in as well.
JUST ORDERED MY HTC INSPIRE 4G. To put things in perspective, I'm currently using a Samsung Mythic (Nubbins-ville USA) and this is my first true experience with Android.
I've been scouring, researching into Android for at least a year now and have finally made the jump. Much like other people on this forum, I definitely struggled with the decision between the Atrix and Inspire. To be honest, when the Atrix was first promoted I was sold on the spot. After release and all the horror stories, I guess I could say that I was swayed I bit.
Either way, I'll definitely be posting around these boards a lot more. Can't wait!

[Q] What will I miss besides sense??

I'll probably be changing to AT&T and the Infuse 4G, coming from Sprint and an Evo 4G. I know I wont se anything like sense, besides the LauncherPro Sense Theme, and Sense is something I will greately miss a lot :'( but I just want to know what other features I might not see on the Infuse, and if possible also the benefits from switching. Also, is android 2.3.3 available for it? Cause I've been told its still on 2.2. And finally, testing an Infuse at an AT&T store I was unable to download music, it said the file was not supported (an mp3 file...) can the phone download music?? Or will I have to transfer music from my pc?
Sorry for all the questions, but those are the only thoughts/doubts keeping me from switching today as soon as stores open.
you might miss not having an FM radio. and the hdim requires An adapter that you might forget to carry. there is 2.3.3 on the Rogers infuse, soon the firmware will be flashable to the att infuse. now there is a custom rom beta and the final version is in there works that is 2.3.3
the mp3 problem is something that i haven't experienced but some people report it as an issue if the phone is on too long it starts giving file not supported error, i don't know why but i don't have that problem. this phone actually supports more codecs and wrappers than phones from any other manufacturer without 3rd party software. you can definitely download music too it. it also has a hifi headphone amp. multimedia is basically the focus of this and the galaxy s line.
Once you've realized the negative performance impact Sense had on your phone you probably won't miss it either.
Sense was a massive improvement for Windows Mobile phones. It was a minor improvement to the early Android user interface, but these days it's just a bloated step backwards.
as far as 2.3 goes, there is a beta rom in the dev section, and there is also an official AT&T update coming in the next few weeks.
I too came from Sprint / Evo 4G. Here are the pros / cons as I see them, in order of importance to me.
Pros
Battery life
Thin form factor
Weight
Screen
Network speed
Voice / data simultaneously
Cons
GPS
Game compatibility
Speaker volume

I agree. I had the inspire and the whole sense experience while really cool seemed like a huge resource hog. Couple that with htc already crappy battery and the phone can't even last a day. Sorry but I really don't need all that bloat that is sense.

lets wait on a better release with a fully working kernel, gps didnt work for me at first. i got mine working good by starting with the jz3 mod and changing a few things, it wouldn't seem to work without secure socket on the supl settings enabled, i took the last two lines out of the gps.conf from jz3.
Only thing I have to add is that the inability to download certain file types may be compounded by the infuse but is also a known froyo issue.
The best work around I've seen for the majority of people is to install astro file manager and then in preferences check the box labeled "enable browser download".
Step by step... install astro, open it, press menu button, scroll down to "Enable browser download", check that and press the back button until you've exited the app. This will act much like the built in download manager in gingerbread. If you have trouble locating downloads that used to go to the tapatalkxdapre folder look in the normal download folder.

I agree as well. The first time you use Sense, it's like wow! Look how beautiful it is. After you try something else, you'll like how clean it is and how much the bells and whistles bog the device down. I now call Sense bloat .
i dont think sense is beautiful at all. it has a cool weather widget, that's it. the launcher is ugly, the menus have too many options, the colors are ugly, too many greys, really outside of the widget i dont see anything about sense that says wow. thoguh vanilla android was pretty gross untill gingerbread came out. touch wiz is ok but i like the hybrid of tw3+tw4 icons+aosp status bar and icons in gtg's rom. that should be what the phone looks like out of the box. and there should be some better widgets.

Can you wait just a bit ? Samsung is releasing the Galaxy S2 on ATT sometime in August or early September the latest.
That phone will be much better than the Infuse, plus have tons of developers supporting.
I might switch to the S2 on ATT too, Sprint's service is really going down. 3G speeds are super bad, like 100k/sec at times in Chicago. And 4G if you can keep a signal is the slowest 4G compared to Verizon's LTE and ATT HSPE

Well first off, i want to thank everybody for their replies, and second appologize for not replying Ive been a little bussy , so after reading all of the replies and asking around ppl who switched to the infuse, Im more convinced than ever that it wont be any dissapointment in any aspect to get an infuse since it would practically be an upgrade. For the speaker, ill miss my Evo's since its sooooo loud, I use the PowerAmp EQ and an app called Equalizer and it really boosts the volume, I'll surely be trying it on the Infuse and see if its any louder. Also as gregj100 mentioned game compatibility, I hope the games I love and really use do work on the phone. Aside from that, if I ever do miss Sense, I read theres a solution: download LauncherPro and download the SenseUI theme, so Im good with that. And as far as music, in any case I'd just transfer it from my pc if the phone doesnt want to download a song for some reason , so yeah Im really looking forward to the switch to the Infuse ;D once again thanks to everyone for the helpful replies.

I agree with u that AT&T is better and much much faster, plus here at home Sprint reception is horrible and they suggested an "Airave" system which I'd have to pa an extra $5 a month, its like im paying to get bad reception and I have to pay even more to get good reception -_-, but anywas I just dont like the 2GB limit, but I can get used to it since I wont use data at home cause I have WiFi ;D, so as far as AT&T Vs Sprint I have no problem switching there either, and as for Galaxy S2, I never was a Galaxy fan but the S2 is really a great improvement, now I'd just have to get used to the square at the bottom instead of all 4 keys (home, menu, back, search) though I never really used search.

the att varient of the gs2 wont have the centered home, anyway you will need to get used to the galaxy s button locations which are different from the evo.

I came from an inspire as well. While it was a good phone, work picked up my cell and that allowed me to try out the infuse. I absolutely LOVE this phone. Personally, I enjoy it much more the my Inspire (which i gave to my mother-in-law).
Anyway, it's been a while since i had a phone this awesome (was on a long line of iPhone trend before my Inspire).

hm didnt know about the button, I guess thats good for me , and about the buttons yeah when I tried powering on an Infuse for the first time I was trying to find the power button on top, until i looked and saw it on the side ;P just a little getting used to on both phones regardless of which I choose to go for.

Who loves their G2x currently?

Who loves their g2x based mostly on the work the devs contribute? From the guys that build from source code to guys that try to theme through images, xml, and smali , to guys that port working stuff from phone to phone so more users can expatience it.
I love my g2x. I cant think of anything that I want to change within reason, and it got to where it's at by lots of trial and error and help from devs that stepped me thrpugh some processes.
My G2x runs on weapon 2.3.3 rom, and custom themed by my partner and in...super smooth, no reboots, everything that I use works., quick ui. Battery life is hard for me to gauge because I'm always plugging in to push files all day.
You don't wanna know where this was sent from.
I love mine so much! It's such an amazing phone. <3
Great Phone
I love my G2x as well! Running latest CM7 nightly with bluesteel theme by team carbon but I have flashed just about every ROM there is (Crackflasher and this phone handles them all with ease.
Definitely interested in the Nexus Prime but I will still keep my G2x close by. Thanks for your hard work mmapcpro!
After flashing miui rom on it, things just went from bad to awesome!! Now i can really say god i love this phone!
I absolutely HATE this phone! Jk, I cant think of any other phone I'd rather have. The dev support on this thing is amazing!
Sent from my stone tablet using a hammer and chisel.
To be honest...upon first receipt I wanted to return this phone....then I quickly rooted, flashed CM7 (and now MIUI) and I couldn't imagine any other device...the screen bleed issues aside, it is an amazing device....also I have poor battery life, but hey...I don't really get peeved about that.
I have used windows mobile devices since 2004. My last windows phone broke about a year ago and had to use a &%$#berry. In June I upgraded. Knowing I wanted a android but not really knowing the fist thing about it. Sure I had played around with a few devices kind of knew what I was looking for. I got the phone and loved it from the fist min. I will admit this not a beginners or novice users phone.....any how still just as fun now as minute one.

Like you I had buyer's remorse. After LG update tool, and EB 1.07 I've had no hardware issues.
The A2DP isn't issue cause I don't use it. Pleased overall but it took a while to get here. Didn't exchange my phone. Didn't see the point, still on my first phone.
So far so good

I took a chance on a second hand one and had it shipped to Thailand before I saw it (reputable supplier I have purchased many devices from). I can only see some minor screen bleed on all black in a dark environment. Other than that I am quite happy with my G2X. Sim unlocked it with a $2.99 code from eBay, updated with LG Updater to 2.3.3 with a minor glitch that was easily overcome, no reboots, no lockups, no problems at all. Just a super fast, super charged phone that loves to eat its battery for lunch. I can get through a day at work but when I get home my beloved G2X cries out for food.
BTW, whoever has said you cannot update without a T-Mobile number is wrong. I had a Thai sim in mine (TOT3G) when I ran the updater and when it got to the part where it said "checking number" it flew right past it. So the guy on Walmart Family Mobile who said his failed on the number check must have had some other issue causing the update to fail.
I'm really enjoying this phone! I made the move from AT&T and a HTC Aria, which I did love. My wife is having a harder time getting to like her phone though. She previously was using a 3GS but by switching to T-mobile we are saving almost 40 a month over AT&T. I know you can unlock Iphones for T-mobile but her 3GS has an upgraded baseband and latest firmware which prevents an untethered Jailbreak and unlock, so no Iphone migration.
I love this phone. I'm running cm7 trigger2 2.3.5 with go launcher, launcher pro+, and Regina launcher. This phone performs flawlessly on all three launchers.
Big ups to G2x!!!

I love my G2x. Almost brought it back after reading all the issues here but I'm glad I didn't. I have used XBoarders rom and now Weapon G2x.
My wife and I both love our G2x's. Now that EaglesBlood 2.3.3 has improved the battery life dramatically I can't find a single thing to ***** about except the back button in the browser. A minor issue but annoying considering it work as it should with froyo.

g2x experiences

Hey guys, i am currently interested in getting the g2x to dev on. I dev for the Moto defy since the day it came out and have plenty of roms. Now my question is how are you guys experience with this device? I've read some complaints of tons of reboot and back light leak, poor signal..etc.. Any comments would be much appreciated, looking forward to getting this phone
Very good device. Some have backlight bleed but only really noticeable in the dark and when looking at it on an angle.
I haven't had any reboots recently but once when i got a call and after hung up it just died and had to pull battery.
Main problem seems to be that Nvidia's lack of sources for A2DP functionality for stereo bluetooth and that 2.3.3 is on froyo kernel so further updates with custom roms would be difficult.
thanks for the reply, how are the roms? Any problems with current roms ?

In all honesty, CM7 works perfectly even with the lack of a2dp support. 2.3.3 OTA based roms (namely Weapon G2x) works just as well if you want that close to stock feel with more features. MIUI has all the same problems CM7 does since they run off the same kernel.
I've never had any issues with reboots, and if people do it's probably because of rogue apps running in the background. I never had a reboot because I like keeping my app drawer as minimal as possible At least, that is my theory
I love my g2x..just checked the sgs2 but not really into that much, my g2x on Cm7 was faster... The roms are good, I do agree with the lack of tegra support but Meh. Love it..please get one and welcome..
I love my phone.
Excellent performance, excellent display, and excellent battery life. I'm on my 3rd one, but that was because my first one kept locking up, and my 2nd replacement came damaged.
I love this phone, and I wouldn't want to replace it with anything else until the Nexus Prime. ^_^
Absolutely zero problems, love this phone so much. One of the best parts is the glass. It's curved, which makes unlocking it feel really good , and the glass feels really thick and solid. Also NO scratches, coming from an iphone all these things are huge. Loving it.
I feel like this phone can stay up to date with most of the devices coming out right now... On Android, you don't actually need 1GB of RAM... Heck, 512MB is more than enough! I'm gonna hold out until the quad core phones start coming in... If the Nexus Prime is still a dual core, I won't even bother.
I got 99 experiences but a reboot ain't one.
My 1st G2x is running good.
no reboots, no reception issues.
runs great and my app drawer always has at least 200 apps.
lol
I haven't started deving /theming on it yet.
Thanks everyone for you input! Just placed the order for it and cant wait to get. Never dev for any other devices besides moto , so im looking forward to this.
Awesome a new dev!!! Wanna thank you in advance. Good luck

Reboots
My wife and I both have our 3rd G2x (due to replacements of bad phones). The phones we have now are doing well, however we both did experience a random SHUTOFF not reboot. It only happened twice, so I'm just waiting to see if that happens again, really weird.
My G2x is is running great. On my second one due to random shut downs on my first. I only experienced a couple reboots until I got a brand new battery and rooted the phone. Currently running Eagles Blood 2.3.5 others no misshaps. Love it.

This is a great phone. For those of us that have had no problems, the intended impact of the device is evident.
However, you cannot ignore what a lot of people went through. for many, the g2x experience was the worst possible.
LG and T-Mobile appear to have let the phone fade away. Even though its for sale, and can be had for cheap, it no longer appears in comparison with other good phones on the market today. Check the reviews out their today...cnet, etc....The powers that be have let it fade away.
Even DEVs appear to have moved on. Many of the people here a few months ago have moved to other devices. Even saying that, there are some real good ROMs out there...just less people deving them.
In all honesty I have to say, this phone is the best phone I've owned. But in that same honesty, I'd have to say, you may want to consider something else. Even the Sensation is now getting far more press and exposure from T-Mobile than this beauty. There are TONs of ROMs available for the Sensation and some of the best DEVs from the android world are there.
I've recently considered the Bionic....but the VzW pricing plan is just too much. Minimum $100 a month to walk out with a Bionic.
I love the G2x. But if you want long term upgradabiity...you may wish to look elsewhere.
Just my opinion....

No. It just finds it. Maybe not on second one, but 10-20.
Also, I came to G2x from the Bold, which would die in a day with no usage under dead zones. That was a huge problem - I was forced to enable and disable airplane mode all around. The G2x is great in that matter.

I have noticed that a lot of problems happen under the stock ROM or roms based on the stock one.
Flashing something like CM7 or MIUI fixes a lot of problems.

I am very disappointed in my GS4

I'm sorry I've been a galaxy user for a long time and have never been let down until now. I have had the gs2 gs3 note and note 2. I have loved them all and didn't expect anything less out of the new gs4. Well I guess there is a first time for everything. This phone sucks plain and simple! It suffers from terrible lag when scrolling through the web. The pinch to zoom is terrible and slow. Yea the features are cool but who's ever really going to use them? You would think that maybe with all the new software samsung has introduced they would have taken a little time to give us a better keyboard with an auto correct feature. Even while typing the thread my phone is suffering from terrible lag and just can't keep up with me.
Htc one. I have that as well and I'm trying to decide which to keep. Its smooth as silk and works as it should. I'm trying to persuade myself to keep the galaxy s4 hoping that a patch will be issued and alot of these issues will be fixed. I'm having a hard time doing it though because the htc is really perfect aside from button placement and size.
If you really have been using those devices you mention then you should know that all the issues you say you are experiencing can be easily solved by update or by rooting the device and getting rid of bloat. S4 is a beast hardware wise.

I'm thinking that when a stable root method is available a custom rom will definitely improve things. The sheer amount of bloatware is ridiculous and is bogging down the performance of the phone. A debloated rom might be the fix.

Root is already available and especially since there now appears to be a safe way to return to stock (kies or odin) you should now feel safer when manually debloating because fixing a softbrick is just a few clicks away
And to the op...I couldnt agree more about the keyboard...but as far as lag goes...I have yet to see any lag that so many are claiming to have and I havent even disabled or begun to remove any stock apps...so I guess I got lucky with my device

I want to love the S4. Nice big 5" screen, I don't really mind TW, decent camera, size and weight are perfect for me but man the lag is horrendous!
I have rooted and froze 73 apps in titanium yet it still has some lag. It's quite sad actually..
I realize part of the lag is 4.2.2 but good grief!
I am actually thinking about returning it for a Nexus 4 or maybe wait a little and see what the Nexus 5 has to offer..

I know that an update can fix things. My problem is patience and waiting for that update to be released. Its a real shame that a phone with such amazing specs just can't do what its supposed to do without lag and issues. As far as rooting goes in sure that many people on this forum are familiar with it but I'm not. Why can't the device come out of the box working like it should?!?!!! The htc does work and works well. If not for the. 3" and button layout the gs4 would already be back in the box of the way to att return dept.
The same goes for me being very disappointed. I had the Captivate, S2, dad has S3, wife has a Note 2 and all have been good phones. I love my wife's Note 2 but can't deal with a phone that big. My biggest problem with the S4 is the battery life mine is getting. I can barely get more than an hour screen time. Right now my phone is at 15% with 1:20 screen time that accounts for 40% of the battery after 10 hrs unplugged. I'm tired of constantly tweaking roms, I just want a phone that works all day without me having to install a custom rom.

Sad to say it requires any tampering (root, app disabling, or cfw) to get it running smooth. Hopefully a Very soon update will smooth it out without killing battery life. Another thing that's crazy is this phone is clocked .2 higher than the htc one and optimus g pro but still lags like crazy

Agreed. There should be no need for disabling apps/removing bloat or installing custom roms to get this phone working smoothly. Its got the hardware no doubt but something is definitely wrong when a flagship phone with these specs doesn't work smoothly out of the box. HTC seem to have got it right software wise. Its clocked lower with the same processor and is buttery smooth and almost benches as high running at 1.5

It's going to be so funny when AT&T & Samsung release a update and this phone (S4) becomes the most smooth Android phone ever... Or better yet when we finally get that bootloader unlock tool released and starting getting clean & optimized versions of the stock ROM.
@damon20r 1 hour screen time?!? I can easily get 6+ hours on full brightness... It's either your battery (faulty) or a rogue app.
Thats why i sold my s4. I immediatly noticed the lag. My htc one is smooth as silk.
wow I haven't noticed any lag - it is super fast compared to my epic 4g (galaxy s I). Maybe some ppl have a defective phone? As for battery life, 1) google talk, make sure you're signed out (big battery killer) and in the pull down menu, choose top right for more choices of what's on/off. I turned off air view/gesture, nfc, smart screen/view etc, etc. all the bloat. Now great life. Still at 29% despite heavy use all day. 11 hrs on battery 63% screen time. Maybe use autoscreeen brightness. Also I turned off facebook notifications too (that helped). The "power saving"option also helps save battery life.
