I noticed that the charging rate was abysmal when charging from a usb port. So I looked to see if the phone was sleeping while charging. CPU spy says it doesn't (both wall charger and usb port). Is this normal? (i.e. does every android phone do this?). I'm thinking if it was sleeping it might charge faster since it wouldn't be using so much electricity.
UPDATE: Using current widget, I see that the phone is getting ~150-250mA while charging via usb port. I'm pretty sure a usb port puts out about 500mA, which means about 1/2-2/3 of the current is being consumed by the phone not sleeping. No wonder it takes forever for the phone to charge via usb. All my previous phones charged pretty fast via usb.

Hi, Are you using a custom ROM? There is an option in my custom ROM (ARHD 6.7.0) to stay awake while charging, which can be checked/unchecked under Settings -> Develop Option menu.
It depends on the PC. The MAX current is 500mA but might be less, hence some USB disks have an additional USB connector to get more power. Mind you if it's a reasonably new PC it should be 500mA.
The mains charger should have a rating on it, hopefully 1000mA, try that and check in CurrentWidget. Also bear in mind that the charging current will also tail off as it gets close to being fully charged.
Have you ticked un-ticked the box "No Log in Charge" and also ticked "Force Log in Sleep Mode".
If you click on the battery graph in setting does it show the phone Awake 100% or does it have some sleep periods ?
EDIT:
Are you looking at the figures from the log file or the widget on screen ?
I had a quick look at mine (unfortunately I can't be certain which was mains or USB from PC as the phone was on both randomly.
Anyway max I saw was ~900mA charging the tails off as expected the closer it gets to 100%. Seems to start dropping the charging current 900mA @ ~60%, 150mA @~80% then close to 90% it's dropped to 23mA !!
EDIT2:
I know when I was using CM7 the ROM purposely showed fully charged at 90% to avoid overcharging and destroying the LI-Ion battery. It would continue to charge fully to 100% but at a much reduced rate.

I didn't turn on the force fast charge because I didn't know what it was. Now that I know, I might turn it on.
Also, stay awake while charging is not checked.

Can't use the mains charger because it is a Hong Kong adapter and I live in main land China (different outlets). Don't recognize "No Log in Charge" and "Force Log in Sleep Mode" so I'm going say I haven't done either.
Also, I became aware of the problem while trying to charge the phone via my Asus Transformer usb port and the usb ports on the computers at the school I teach at. The phone would say charging but would never actually increase the battery percentage. Those both probably have pretty low amperage. However my home pc is fairly new, and charges other phones fast, and charges my sensation at decent speed.
I use cpu spy to check to see if it sleeps. Charging via usb port or wall adapter (non-HTC) cpu spy never shows even 1 second in deep sleep, it just stays at 192 MHz. Unplug the phone and it will go straight into deep sleep no problem. Looking at the History Details for the battery, it has some non-awake(sleep??) periods during charging.
So, do android phones (or specifically the sensation) go into deep sleep while charging? I just need to figure out is this normal or not.

Thanks, that is exactly the information I need.
UPDATE: Now that I know my ROM/Kernal doesn't have any problems, I've moved on to testing cables/ports/chargers. Finding huge differences in the charging rate between different cables.
OK on CM10 I just charged from 68% to 100% and the phone was NOT awake during the charging period.
I'll repeat the exercise later on 3.33.401 stock but expect to see the same.
Are you sure it's not one of your apps that's causing the phone to stay awake ?

It's not "awake" i was looking at, I was looking at deep sleep. The phone can be "not awake" and at the same time not be in deep sleep. Awake is when the phone is on and doing things, even when the screen is off. Deep sleep is when the phone is hibernating. While charging, the phone is not awake, unless its doing something, however it doesn't go into deep sleep either. It just throttles down the CPU speed to the lowest speed and "idles" so to speak.
Yeah, so I solved my problems. Thanks for the help.
Does anyone know how to fix it? (don't know if it's an issue indeed)
I just wanted that my phone goes to deep sleep as I eventually use Powerskin (1500mah external battery) and it lasts like 8 hours (cpu keeps at 192mhz, doesn't get into deep sleep while charging). So, I'd like to avoid unecessary battery consumption.

Yeah, over-charging is no problem. It'll stop charging when it's full.
This does raise an interesting question, one I haven't really bothered to try but have just now become curious about. Can you plug the phone into the wall, sans battery, and use the phone still? Or will it only function, plugged in or not, with the battery installed?

LOL, I just tried that last night, and... ohh Noo it don't even turn the power light on w/o a battery... so @Amaric: Keep charging it!
I am aware that phone is not working if you take out the battery and connect it to a charger. I was wondering if there is some kind of a workaround.
My plan was to have phone switched on for months with wireles ON too. That just can't be good for battery and it could even be dangerous.

Turn off power savings on Wi-Fi and leave phone ON, doing something over the internet, just idling, so that the LCD is off. Say for example: acting as router.
Conditions:
1. Phone w/full battery -
2. Phone charging w/full battery -
How long did he battery last? How did the phone temperature change? What would you guess would happen in 48hrs of usage?
EDIT: My experience with Wi-Fi is that it drains more power than the charger output. Temperature raises substantianlly w/o LCD, gets extreamly hot w/LCD on. So what would be the options?

my opinion? If it does stay on after removing the battery, then it'll do the same if you have the phone on while running Windows, and charging and remove the battery. Battery charging is not handled by OS, its handled by Hardware.

Does anyone else think this is true? I think it would be unlikely that having the screen off but wifi on would use more power than the wall adapter provides.
I suspect that you could jumper the battery connections to mimic a full battery, but I am not going to try.
I think you can put resistors to mimic the internal resistance of a battery, but I wouldn't recommend it. If anything goes wrong you might burn out the charging/power control circuit which probably would turn your phone to a brick.
Oh, and the whether it charges when plugged in and using WiFi depends on your charger. I've got a 6V 2.4A (15W) charger for my phone, good luck using up all that juice with a Tornado. That thing easily charges my TyTN with HSDPA (3G), WiFi, Bluetooth and screen active.
15W is more or less what my laptop uses under normal load
Hello everybody, I own an HD2 that is alway connected to a table cradle (connected via USB to a PC) during the day when I'm in Office. I wonder if exist an app that allows to manage the battery charging: I explain...I'd like that the HD2 AUTOMATICALLY "turns off" the charging when the battery is fully charged at 100% and automatically "turns it on" again when the battery charge reaches a given threshold (60-50-40% or something like that). If you own an IBM/Lenovo Laptop I'd like something like the power managment app. Of course the data syncronization HAVE ALWAYS TO STAY TURNED ON regardless the chargin of the battery.
Does it exist somehing like that?
Thanks and regard
Andrea
There is a setting that allows for the battery not to recharge when connected to a PC. Other than that, I completely fail to see what would be the purpose of what you are asking.

thanks for your answer! I already know the setting you're talking about, but as I told early I'd like something that manages this setting automatically. The purpose is to avoid the decreasing of the battery lifetime caused by letting the battery itself "always" connected to a charging source. For example in the Laptop PCs it's better to unplug the battery when the laptop is conncted to an external power source/charging unit...
Thanks

Most modern devices (and, I believe the HD2) actually disconnect charging when the battery is at 100%. The green light doesn't mean that your HD2 is still charging, but that it's at 100%. Therefore I don't believe you actually shorten the battery life by keeping it plugged in.

I did believe it too but I have an app wich monitors the battery temperature and still when the battery charge is 100% its temperature remains "high" (35 grades degrees) as long as I keep the device plugged to the cradle. I see the same temperature value when the battery is actually charging...this fact have made me change my mind about the fact that the HD2 disconnect charghing when 100% is reached...
Its not the battery which is getting hot, it's the phone.
If I had a lithium-poly/ion battery that was reaching 35C I'd be very worried!
If your app is showing the battery at 35C, turn the phone off, remove the battery and it should be cool to the touch.
If it's hot then you have a problem.

Heat will decrease the life expectancy of the battery, but so will deep charging rather than top ups, remember with non-NiCd batteries you don't get memory effect, so the only reason to do a deep charge is to recalibrate the software battery meter.
Of course leaving the battery sitting on a shelf will also degrade it's capacity, they start to degrade as soon as they're produced, so buying a spare and not using it until your original battery dies is not a good idea, better to buy a replacement battery when the original starts failing.
HTC's batteries actually seem very reasonably priced too which is refreshing.
Question to any one who have an electronic lab, and some basic tools; please measure the current used by the phone in those cases:
- on PC USB
- on charger
when the phone is ...
- charging battery between 60 and 80% in plane mode
- charging between 60 and 80% in connected mode (wifi on, with download on way)
- battery is full, and phone idle.
I need this to check if I shall sent back my phone to HTC.
There is something very wrong with my phone, but I am not sure if it's the battery, or the internal charger ...
My issue is that as soon as I put wifi on, and keep screen on (because I am using it doing phone calls in loudspeaker mode, or playing games), battery runs flat even when connected to charger (loosing about 12% per hour); to charge my phone I have to switch Wifi OFF, and stop using it for at least 4h. Yes I have tried many tricks to save batt; I have a real hardware issue. Either my batt was killed by the old ClockWorkMod version 4.0.1.4, or I killed the internal charger when trying to use a Nokia booster, or maybe it have always been faulty What I know for sure is that when I read
/sys/devices/platform/htc_battery/power_supply/battery/batt_attr_text I have very often a negative value for batt_current: ... even when charger is plugged in (even legacy official HTC charger).
Thanks for contribution.
This is a strange one. When I connect USB to my computer the device shows up, I also get the option for USB tethering on the phone... however it does not indicate that it is charging. The charger works in other phones and I've even tried using a proper charger (i.e. not a usb cable).
Now the thing is, I'm not sure if it's not charging. When I turn the phone on I have 11% battery and get a notification about it and told to plug in a charger, and when I plug it in the message does not come back - although the battery % stays on 11.

Like I said, I've tried using a direct mains charger too. The USB connection from phone to computer is fine as I can transfer files etc. It just won't charge regardless of what cable I use.
That said though, the battery has been on 11% for a long time. Makes me think that it has actually been charging (or else it would have decreased/died) and it's just the reading that is stuck? I've tried switching to icon mode then % but it's still on 11. Is there a way to recalibrate it? The phone is barely a month old so it's surely not a hardware issue.

When I got mine the battery hung on 31% for ages then dropped to 0% and rebooted. Since then I cycled it through a few times without connecting the charger until it was flat and then charged it to max and left it for a few hours at least. It came good after that and I've had no problems. According to Motorola to recalibrate the battery state it should be left for charge once fully charged for a few hours extra.
I've had mine for a few weeks.
It doesn't seem to change either side of 11% whether I charge it or not. I guess I'll just have to plug it in for a few hours and assume it's fully charged?
It took me ~4 and 1/2 hours to charge it fully using the 500mAh Moto charger from 0%, but I did it the other way around--I used it till it was flat first.

That's very peculiar... It might indicate something wrong at the firmware level. You are running the standard ROM, are you?
I'd advise to jump some factory resets / firmware (re)install hoops.
I'm running Beanstalk ROM but the creator is already getting very cranky with me for suggesting it might be a bug in that
Unless you can reproduce the behaviour with the stock firmware, Beanstalk is the prime suspect.
But it could be a file/driver corruption, hence the suggestion to reinstall.
Same problem with XT1033 on Stock 4.4 ROM
on stock 4.4 ROM same problem i am facing, even after 1-2 hours charging its showing same % of battery.
but after a restart its coming to normal condition & shows charging icon.
I charged my phone last night (still on 10%), brought it out with me and during use it cut out and would not turn on. I kept trying to turn on by either pressing power on or pressing power & vol down. A couple of times I got to the bootloader but that was it. When I got home I plugged it into a charger and it came up with a white screen with an empty battery graphic.
Now my phone will not turn on no matter what I do, even when plugged in.
I have had the phone for a couple of days now. charged it 4 times. all 4 times I charged it with the 65W warp charge 65 brick. I cant find any battery optimisation settings that can cause this issue. the Phone has some option that kicks in and stops the charging at 75% . i switched off both battery optimisation options just to check and still it didn't work. it wont charger even with the older dash or warp charger so its most likely a android 11 oxygen os optimisation that I cant find any option to turn off. pls HELP! it only charges to a 100% with the phone turned off.
You say this is only happening when the phone is turned on? It sounds like some type of battery protection mechanism designed to minimize battery wear while the phone is on. Some people like to keep their phone on a charger for hours at a time while using Hot Spot for example. Some say that this is bad for the battery??? I do this, but not using a charger, but rather using USB into a charging port on my laptop...which is a very slow charging option. My 8t arrives tomorrow so I will have to see if it is happening on mine. When using the rapid charger while the phone is off, when it hits 100% it will top charging...but if the phone is on it will "keep" charging which may be bad using this new high speed charging. Just a guess on my part. Many times there are settings available on these phones that are very hard to find. I would do a search in the settings app using whatever different words you can think of to see if there is something that can be adjusted.

Is there a message on the notification centre? I remember my device cut the charging at 80% saying that it will slowly charge to 100 in a few hours to protect battery life. I believe this is with the battery optimization turned on.
If there's nothing similar then try to go for a replacement or take it to OnePlus support.
