I accidentally dropped my brand new phone in some water, and I thought it was dead at first but after a couple days it booted fine, but the battery seems to drain pretty fast and it also periodically vibrates when it's off but the battery is in. I want to get it replaced but I'm not sure what my best options are. Can I sign up for Asurion insurance and get a replacement with a deductible? The water damage indicators are pink so they'll know it's water damaged but I'm not sure what they cover (and I'd probably have to say that it happened after I signed up). Anyone else have experience with Asurion? Thanks!
(as a side note, I might consider just selling it as a damaged phone on ebay/swappa I guess. It still works fine besides the battery drain and the vibrating but I don't know how long that will last).
did you already dry it out in a bag of rice?
I've never had to deal with Asurion, but you might be able to get away with getting a refurb by telling them that the battery life is terrible and have them think it's a faulty phone.
Just don't mention the water damage, because I can tell you that my phone already had the water markers tripped right after I unboxed it. It was kind of ridiculous.
The rice thing really works. I dropped my Galaxy Nexus into an undesirable liquid (dont ask) and I quickly took the battery out, rinsed it off again and shook it dry (washed hands!). Put it in a bag of rice over a 2 day period and when I put the battery back in, it fired right up and have had no issues.. Couldnt hurt to give it a try...

Which beats the hell out of the cost of a new phone. Insurance is so worth it.

I wish phone companys would start to waterproof phones. it seems like something so portable should be a given.

LOL, yea that happened to me once years ago with an old flip-phone.
The screen turned all black & it wouldn't turn on at all. Three days later, I noticed the screen looked normal again so I tried turning it on.
Much to my amazement, it fired right up & made a call just fine. I thought it was fine then, but after I didn't get any calls for two days (this was before texting) I realized it didn't ring or vibrate anymore so unless you where looking right at it you could never tell when a call was coming in......
LOL actually that's where I dropped it too, and my first instinct was to try to wash it off which was retarded; I was a TA for a circuits class at a rather prominent university last semester so I should probably turn in my electronics card at the door . Well, actually I first tried to turn it off but the power button was not responding and I didn't think to pull out the battery before trying to wash it off. I knew about the rice thing but I didn't think to do it, I actually just left it alone and it started working again after a couple days. The behavior has been kind of odd actually, the first few days it was kind of fine with mediocre battery life and the weird vibrating thing, then battery life actually approached normal and the vibrating stopped, but afterwards battery life got really bad again. Now it drains at a constant rate as if I was using it all the time and when I try to charge it the battery heats up quite a bit. I'm not going to try to charge it anymore until I get back to the US and I already ordered a new battery, if that works normally then I'll just keep the phone but otherwise I'll have to figure something out. I think worst case I might be able to sell it for about $400 as is on ebay, perhaps with a memory card or something.
The main question I actually had which no one really answered was when can I add Asurion insurance? I thought it's within the first 30 days of having the device right? Since I got it on the 10th of July that means I can do it on the 9th of August, right? Can't seem to figure out if I can add it online or whether I have to call in. If it's within 30 days of ordering that will suck but hopefully that's not the case.
Call in the Verizon. Usually asurion has open enrollment even after the 30 day period. There is a deductible you can also insure it at best buy within the first 30 days. I there is no deductible and it's 9.99 a month. If using insurance though through asurion you can claim it as lost and sell it with a bad esn on ebay if money is a issue.

It is fraud, adding the insurance after the fact and keeping the device and selling it on Ebay, if nothing else it's dishonest. Luckily this is the internet, and morality is largely obsolete in the digital age. Just make sure you use the phone after you add the insurance. Then make the claim. Then cancel the insurance after you get your new phone, to really pull it off. It isn't your money...and VZW has so much.

rice. that is all
If there ever is a next time(hopefully not), the very first thing is to stick it in rice. I dropped my phone in the toilet, fished it out, got a container and put rice on the bottom, phone in middle and more rice till container is full. Then i sealed it and put it in a ziplock bag to make sure it was sealed and the next day all was well.

i also dropped my s3 in water (in my kids bathtub) but luckily the "beyond cell" case i have on it slowed the water's entry into the phone, & i was able to pull the batt really quick & dissesmbled the phone & put it in a bag of silica..(rics is ok, but silica works better)
all works fine. my little water effect stickers didnt even bleed

My kid has my old mytouch 4G. He's a bit rough on phones. The power button started getting hard to activate and then quit. Me, being the wonderful procrastinator I am, hadn't sent it back to tmobile yet. He was locking it with a widget and waking it with the trackpad. (If the battery died we discovered you could wake it by pulling and reinserting the battery while plugged in).
Yesterday, he ran out of gas and started walking to a gas station when he got caught in a downpour. Yeah, his phone got soaked.
Good news, a warm bowl of dry rice overnight saved it. Worked flawlessly (save for the pre-damaged power button of course) .
Bad news, now his water damage stickers are pink.
Somewhat worse news, it/they? were peeling up and he pulled em off.
Absolute worst news, he got some type of firmware update, pulled the battery to replace his sim from a spare junk phone he was using, and now it will not restart with the plugged in battery pull trick.
Soooo, while the phone became 100% operational from the water, we have to send it back for the button. With pink indicators, it'll cost me $130. I don't have the money. I DO have $5 to buy new stickers from ebay. I just need to know exactly where they go.
Would some kind person post some pics of the inside w/o the battery?? All my google searches have failed. My google-fu is weak.
OR, alternatively, is there another way to reboot the phone??
if you're already opening the phone up to replace the pink stickers, why dont you just fix the power button?
edit: i should point out that there are more often than not water indicators inside the phone itself (ie requires disassembly) so replacing the outside stickers may score you a new battery (there's one by the contacts) if they open the phone up you're caught.
There's popping the battery cover off and then there's OPENING up the phone. I used to think they put stickers inside too, but I have thoroughly disassembled 2 (A Behold 2 and a mytouch slide-- both trashed by my kids w/o insurance) and found none elsewhere in the phone.
here ya go, your best bet is just buying them off ebay
looks like kalel33 is right, I added another pic so you dont have to look. only thing is if you open it watch out for that void marker on the screw

I can also tell you about at least 5 customers I had talked with who sent in the phone with the LDI inside the battery compartment being fine and they were hit with out of warranty fees because the LDI stickers on the inside were shown liquid damage. So yes, some phones do have the stickers inside too.
In this video I see at least one LDI sticker on the motherboard.

Not to be a jerk, but I believe there is a rule about asking for help in tricking the phone companies like this on XDA. Don't think it's enough for a ban or anything serious, but just a heads up, this thread may be closed soon.

Thanks. It's still worth a shot, the fee tmobile charges is actually less than the deductible asurion does. And they will bill it, I can pay it then, at the moment we raped our bank account for a down payment on a vehicle.

Actually, I don't believe there is. In ANY case, the damage is legitimate and not caused by the subsequent water issue. I can't prove that, so I am looking for an alternative. So I would only be "tricking" them to get what should be done, done.
Hrrrmmm, after viewing the video I may just attempt to repair the button....
*edit* Ordered a tool set off of ebay instead of stickers. Wish me luck!! And Thank you all!

The update completed successfully, he pulled the battery after the update. The phone will not power on because the button is broken. I can't get into anything cause w/o that button, its like a brick Before the update if you pulled and replaced the battery while the phone was plugged into the wall, it would usually power up. sometimes you had to do it a couple of times. I've done it 100 times now if not more w/o success. Computer doesn't see it when usb plugged either. Win 7.

I mean I know it's a very small blemish...but it's not fair that I'm sending them back a 100% perfect condition phone and the replacement they send comes cracked out of the box? (not to mention had finger prints on the camera lens...maybe was a refurb?)
I returned my first One X for wifi issues, it will say I'm connected to wifi full strength but the web won't load at all...however if I turn off wifi and turn it back on it will work again for a few hours or minutes.
I'm now having the same problem with this One X plus I'm pissed they sent a cracked one.
Do you think they'll replace a replacement? I asked for a replacement on my 30th day so it's passed the 30 days now from my original order. Also I feel like they won't believe it was shipped out like that. They're closed atm so I'll have to call tomorrow and figure it out. What do you guys think I should do or what they will do?
Yeah, I would complain. **** that.
Definitely call back and let them know. I'm pretty sure they will send another. Especially since your having issues with the replacement as well.

yeah the crack is a crack not a blemish. I would raise hell. as far as wifi, did you try the squeeze test? also was it doing that on different routers or just the one?
Yeah I'm not sure if it's the customs fault at this because correct me if I'm wrong but they check each phone individually before letting them through.
My replacement came in with a blue blemish on the corner but I was able to wipe it off with some of my sailva and shirt lol.

our phone is not the same as the international version, meaning the antennae is not on the cover anymore, if you take apart your phone, you will see that. It does not have any connectors so that test is useless.
Good to know my chances of getting another replacement are good! I'm pretty sure the crack was from their shipping. They sent the HTC One X box in another box that was just slightly larger...with absolutely NO packing material. Not even brown paper. It was just shaking around in there. Never had such poor shipping like that on a new phone before.
And both this phone and my last one I tried the squeeze test...didn't change anything...I was getting good reception with Wifi Analyzer on both phones without squeezing...it just eventually cuts off and won't work till I restart wifi. Happens on multiple different routers.
I am a bit bummed though. Battery life on this one was literally almost TWICE as good as my first One X. I had it for 30 days and pretty much ALWAYS got 2 hours of on screen time exactly. The first day with this replacement phone I had about 9 hours of use and 50% battery left which was about normal for my first phone...then I saw that the on screen time was 2 hours and 20 minutes! I can get about 3-4 hours on screen now with this replacement. Hopefully the next one is crack free + another good battery!

Any insurance I have seen is a rip off. $10 a month and you still have to pay $200 when you break or lose your phone.
Asurion is $5.15/month + $99 deductible through Verizon, adding Verizon's total equipment coverage brings it up to $7.99 (don't add If rooted). Well worth it to carry while your device is still "new".

Whats wrong with having the total equipment coverage with a rooted device?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
It's an extended warranty on top of insurance. They will not honor anything if the device is rooted..... Well if they find out its rooted! If there is an issue and you can't bring it back to stock for whatever has gone wrong, they won't cover it. I'm sure there are plenty of loop holes, but in general I stand by this:
Rooting voids your warranty, so if you decide to root your device know that you own it and that's it. Claims with samsung however are different. Your manufacturers warranty has some wiggle room. Keep verizon out of it as much as possible. They put locked bootloaders on for a reason.
Insurance is protection on the device itself in relation to a "loss". This includes theft, smashings, losing in ocean, and yes sad to say it, but a brick technically is a loss (still make the device disappear though, don't send it in to assurion). Almost every scenario with ins. assumes that it's your fault, that's why you have a deductible, and a high one at that.
Sent from my VZW GS3 running Synergy/Trinity/Dark Horse Rises
If you have insurance. Claim under insurance as normal. And swap the top frame with screen from the refurb to your old device so you can have a working screen to un root it. Then swap it back. There are no tamper stickers they cannot tell. And it takes less then five minutes to fully disassemble our phones.

Sorry to go a bit off topic on this thread, but GRIP insurance through Cell Brokerage is a $50 deductible for the S3 and $6.99 a month. :good:
Yeah, supposedly root voids your warranty, but I've used about 7 claims over the last 3 years and all have been on rooted phones. I even turned them in while they were still rooted (and unlocked). Nobody at the Verizon store cared or has ever checked, and Asurion has never said anything. So don't listen to the hocus-pocus about not paying for insurance if you plan to root.
And the other guy is right, $7 a month plus $99 deductible is a hell of a lot cheaper than $700 to outright replace it. If you do the math....it would take you 85.7 months before you're losing money.....(and if you break them as often as I do )

I have the best buy insurance and they cover everything. $10/month is steep but they cover everything other than losing your phone. No deductable, just drop it off and 2-3 days later they send you a refurb phone. I had it on my old Evo 4g and went through 7 of them over 2 years and never paid a dime beyond the $10/mo.

x2! lets see it!
It's official, I joined the shattered SG3 screen club. The phone fell face down from about waist height and struck the ground right below the home button, which happens to be the ONLY place my Ringke Slim Lite case doesn't protect... JOY.
It also damage the LCD as it started to bleed under the busted glass. The phone survived and still worked, but the LCD bleed was getting worse and making it a challenge to see the screen and home launcher icons.
Luckily, I had insurance and did a claim. Assurion had it to me the next day and pain free.
Also I had a Note 2 on the way, hence the box underneath the SG3.

I have a Verizon Galaxy S III, I was talking on the phone when the screen split. I thought this was gorilla glass? I'm assuming it was because I walked outside while on the phone... which the heat from the phone interacted with the cold from the outside and split the screen.

Dude that sucks!! I wonder if we'll be seeing this a lot more now that the weather is getting colder...

Yeah, I talked to verizon. They said my warranty is void since the screen is cracked. I've only had it for a month. So they sent me off to samsung, and they told me I can pay for the repairs if i send the phone in.
So I'm dealing with customer relations with samsung, and they hung up on me 7 times and are now going to call me back tomorrow... We'll see what happens, but this may be the breaking point for me and samsung. I've never had this issue with moto.
Wow
That really sucks. I could be wrong, but i doubt that's from the cold. In order to crack glass like that you'd have to have some extreme temperature changes. Gorilla glass isn't impervious. It's just scratch resistant glass, that's all. Did you have the assurian insurance (or whatever it's called/however it's spelled)? Can you just tell them you lost it and pay the $125 for a replacement?
Wow.... yea definitely not the weather, you need to be changing temps like crazy fast in order to do that. It might be faulty glass. Something wrong that happened during production. Idk, but I do know the most expensive part of the device is the display. So I know they put a lot of thought into it. Good luck.

First you need an amazon acct buy a new glass without drivers $30. Then you use a heat gun to slowly. SLOWLY warm the screen warm enough you can separate the glass from your touch sensors and LCD driver/display. Reverse steps with new glass. I dropped my phone 5 days after the debut. Paid for a replacement and I bought a new glass.

Yeah I went from 70 degrees to 32 as I walked outside. The display littorly popped while it was up to my ear. I have insurance, but that's not the point. This phones never been dropped scratched or physically harmed in anyway except the display splitting by itself.

This was happening on the Droid Razr as well, some people did get replacements from Moto, but never from Verizon that I am aware.

Hmm, that doesn't seem that drastic, especially if it was insulated against your ear/face. It's probably not even as drastic of a temp change as you would see taking the phone out of your pocket in the winter. Maybe you can get in touch with a manager at Verizon. If there's no obvious other damage (like evidence of a drop, etc), maybe they'll be more accommodating. If what you say is true, it does sound more like a defect.
Yeah, there's no drop. I didn't think it was that drastic of a temp change either, but the crack is a hairline. I think the flash from the camera makes it appear to be bigger than it really is. It looks like a stress fracture and followed a weak point in the glass from expanding and contracting.
Verizon already refused, and said my warranty is void after only having the phone for a month. Now i'm in talks with samsung, which their customer service is a joke "They hung up on me 7 times."
Wow damn that sucks do you have insurance on the phone? I have a otter box defender case on my phone this is actually one of the most flimsy feeling phones i have owned my razr maxx was definetly alot better built also it does not hurt to check and see if there is a cell phone repair shop in your area but insurance would be alot cheaper for 7 bucks a month its good to know your fully covered
Yes I have insurance on the phone, but I don't see why I should pay for a obvious defect that was not my fault.
Spoke with Samsung. Worst customer service I've ever had with a company.
They said it would take 14 days for them just to evaluate the phone to determined if it was their issue. Than they would advise from there.. also the guy refused to give me his supervisors info and threaten to hang up on me for using the term shaddy and shobby.

Yeah this will be the last samsung product I purchase. The customer service was beyond ridiculous. I've never had this many issues with moto. I'll be sending this phone to samsung for "evaluation" which will take 14 days. I have to ship it on my dime, and if they deem it their issue they'll fix it and send it back. If they deem it my issue, they'll email me and quote me a price to fix it, and a quote to send it back. Once again shady and shabby are perfect terms here.
That sounds like the Samsung support I'm familiar with... Sorry to hear about your luck.
Of course, Samsung is ****ing infallible right?

It's illegal to refuse you a supervisor in the U.S. I was a supervisor in a call center (sorry I was that guy). I have never dealt with samsung I just got my GS3. Keep calling till you can get a supervisor this usually fixes 75% of problems in a call center. The supe just wants you off the phone.
This is the craziest thing i have ever seen. Im going out and buying a screen protector....hopefully that will help hold everything together in a scenario like this. I have never heard of something like this happening before...wild
honestly, dude, the cold had help. That dot looking thing in the middle is a point of impact. So something "hit" your screen prior to going outside in the cold.
Hope they fix it regardless.
ps.. what happened to the class action lawsuit about the false advertizing of the gorilla glass? Cause this glass is crap...
Damn. With the cold weather approaching, i hope this doesnt happen to my precious GS3
Hey guys. I'm just curious as to how well your phones have held up during your daily use.
My screen is shattered pretty good. All of the rubber on the back was shredded and ripped off long ago. The frame AND the battery is also bent to all hell

I was running through the parking lot after work and it fell out of my pocket. Not only did it land perfectly face down... It slid into a puddle (a puddle in Washington state?!)
Still works though.
I consider my phone as soft bricked right now. (there is a post about it) I lost root and its impossible to root it again. For now. So my phone is basically twice as worthless to me.

LCD screens do not get screen burn-ins. They do however get what can be loosley called ghost images. Ghost images or more likey to go away after a while of screen transitioning. LCD screens also dont get these images as easy as like plasmas that do get burn-in. So whats the longest time its been on a still image?

That's my thread about my replacement V10. Got my first V10 in February then just this month the right mic (the mic at bottom that you speak into) died. I've been on my warranty replacement V10 for about a week or two now.

Im sorry your in this predicament. But there is some good news... With some bad. If you you have general knowledge of opening up phones, you can find a disassembly guide and buy a replacment screen, but they dow run about $100 US. Another thing to try is well... See if you can ship it without the battery to one of our devolopers here at the v10 h900 forums to ship offf to lg, and send the new one LG ships to them, back to you.
Thx for the sentiments mate..but i will live with this for another year and then buy something new..still much appreciate the offers

You can get a used LG V10 h901 for 234$ on eBay. From what I've seen, most screen replacements are around 120$. So I'm gonna spend the extra 114 dollars and get an h901 to replace my h900.
I'm on my third v10, my wife is on her second. My first one had a issue with the motherboard and overheated and ultimately had the boot loop of death. Att sent me a refurbished one, even though I had my original phone less then two months, that phone had a faulty wifi antenna or something and could not connect to wifi. They sent me another one which is working fine so far, although it's only been three weeks.
My wife's phone died after she had it for a month and a half, something in the phone shorted out and scorched the bottom of the phone, her replacement is working fine for now too.
We've been through four phones in two months. These are not our first lg phones, but I'm really disappointed in these phones and won't be buying another LG phone again.

Still going strong. All stock MM, SOT of about 4 hours, 36 hours between charges, GPS never fails, BT volume a little low in car, audio great. Seidio case, tempered glass screen protector, not a scratch on it. Have to clear cache a little lag the past 2-3 days. It's big and heavy but I love it!

Mine died this past Monday. Suddenly it turned off and when I tried to turn it back on it was on a bootloop on the LG logo. Made a factory reset and it didn't fixed it. Had to take it to att. They sent me yesterday an att certified new device. So far is working good.

Its scary how we have had the EXACT same experience with the V10. First phone boot loop. Second phone refurb would not connect to wifi and when it did it would shut on and off automatically over and over. Ultimately the phone would reboot itself.

That is crazy that we both had the same issues. I was ready to get rid of att so I could avoid more refurbished phones, but they finally agreed to send me and my wife two new models and they added extra data to our plan. The only thing available was the S7 edge, but I'm just ready to wash my hands of the v10 at this point.
Hopefully you get your stuff resolved

Very good question well i keep mine in a outterbox so its still like new however i have notice a oval shape as if morture gets trapped in between the glass and lcd this is my 2nd v10 and it happened again needs to be better sealed
My second one has been pretty solid. No case, and it's been dropped more than a few times, but so far, it's always landed on its edge so no major damage. I'm convinced that a removable battery contributes to this a lot. Having the battery blow out the back on impact is absorbing a lot of the energy when it falls.
My first one, the prox sensor went out after a few weeks. I figured out that it was caused from me putting a lot of bending stress on the frame when I pulled it out of my front pocket while seated. Luckily warranty covered it, and I'm for careful about removing it from my pocket now.
