[Q] IMEI numbers matching phone and box? - General Questions and Answers

Long story short.. I sold a phone on eBay with the original box. However, the phone was replaced twice due to sleep death issues. So it turns out that the phone I had sold IMEI number was different then that of the original sticker on the box. This is normal as when you replace a phone, they don't send you a whole new box, they just give you a new phone.
So my question is.. why would a buyer make a big deal about the box's IMEI number not matching the phone's IMEI number? I can only think that he's trying to re-sell it somehow to make a profit, but can't because the numbers don't match.
His reason is "because customs won't allow phones into Europe without the original box with IMEI numbers matching". Riiiiiiight
Anyone care to speculate? Thanks.

So basically, the buyer is saying customs will take apart the packaging to check the IMEI, and take the phone out to check the IMEI on the back of it? Plus, what about phones that weren't shipped with their original boxes?
The buyer is obviously lying/bsing.

Exactly. He said he was speaking with the airport and they would charge $30-$40 dollars to get some "copies" of proof of ownership so he wants to be compensated for this in a partial refund. When I asked him for the number to this airport so I could verify this obvious bs story myself.. he all of a sudden had to ask his friend for the number and would get back to me. And still hasn't 5 hours later.
Obviously, he's trying to do something dodgy here and wants to be compensated $30-40 for something that he screwed up on by not making sure the IMEI numbers match beforehand. I just can't figure out what.

if i were the buyer, and all that's true, i'd be saying to myself, 'dang i guess i shoulda checked on this intl shipping stuff first..."
just my own thoughts on the matter though...
i wouldnt expect every seller, especially a person, selling his own phone to know every countries or airports shipping procedures...

Since you said Ebay: I take it this is outside the return period (if you had one/stated no returns). Assuming the buyer is reputable himself: I'd ask for documented proof. Paypal would require this as well so you're just saying him the time before Paypal asks him the same thing. Cause yeah: this is sketchy.

Very true, although I don't claim to be an expert on such matters.. from what I understand.. customs doesn't actually open and physically inspect packages unless there's something really abnormal/illegal looking on the package. Imagine if customs actually physically inspected every single package that went through Europe on a daily basis. Not at all plausible.
But that really doesn't even matter in this case as he stated that he, himself, was going to Europe with the phone which made this all so much more bs-worthy.

I did state no returns and yeah I was going to ask him for proof.. but I figured it would be needed anyway if he files a dispute, so I just left that be. I just told him that I'm sorry he didn't verify this all before purchasing as if it was that critical to the sale, he should have made sure before purchasing. I also told him that I could not help any further as the phone works exactly as it should and his only problem is mis-matched IMEI numbers. Definitely sketchy.

this was a US to US transaction? i thought you shipped overseas... he doesn't have a leg to stand on... no part of your transaction said anything about what you do with it afterwards... or i warranty this, yada yada... it was no returns... i would imagine your sale outlined the phone in its condition... like you said, he should've inquired about that... he's taking it with him??? tell him throw the [email protected] box away....

Hahaha.. exactly my thoughts. XD And yes, US to US transaction. Then all of a sudden 2 weeks later he needs the original box to match the phone so he can bring it to Europe with him as a gift. Smh. People will make anything up when they screw up instead of just admitting they made a mistake. Oh well heh.

Unfortunately, eBay and PayPal always side with the buyer. Even if there is a stated "no returns" policy. To make everything supposedly even, they will tell him to ship it back to you, and you will have to refund the original price plus original shipping. You will both be out a little bit. Due to you already paying once for shipping, and him for having to pay to send it back.

Did you get any receipts or paperwork for the replacements. This may be enough if you can send him those as proof.

URGENT: How do I remove custom Rom on Infuse 4G?

Hi all,
Long story short, I was tricked today to buy an infuse 4G telling me that everything was working perfectly. Had it shipped, and of course, it doesn't read any SIM card. I'm brand new to android, so I have no idea what's going on.
I tried calling AT&T customer support and of course they couldn't help. I finally found out that the build version is Infused v2.1.0 and the firmware is 2.3.3
I just read that Infused v.2.1.0 is a custom rom, so I'm wondering how I can go back to the stock version and see if I can get a SIM card to be read in this phone.
PLEASE if anyone can help, I would greatly appreciate it!!!

Thanks. But I think I may have found an even worse problem.
Can someone take a look in the SIM tray and tell me how many pins there are? My BlackBerry has 4, and from the looks of it, it looks like this infuse has 3, but 1 of the pins is missing.
I wish I could take a clear picture of it, but it's near impossible to see. Can anyone with an infuse confirm what theirs looks like?

They should be 6;(3 in front of another 3; Meaning: 3 slightly visible from the metal, and 3 under the metal cover that holds the SIM card on place)
If you bought it via ebay or for that matter anything with Paypal in the middle, you have 45 days from the purchase day to enter a dispute. If you pay cash to a guy you will never see... then your probably screwed... i have heard of "sim" adapters like this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-2-1-GSM...764414?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item3a69e5b2fe
that could "probably" fix that.... or probably not since the adapter also needs the full working pins.... anyways... i recommend (if payed via paypal) to enter a dispute provide full information and make sure the add didnt mentioned anything about " NOT WORKING Sim tray" because if the advertisement of the phone just SLIGHTLY mentioned its your problem... but if it was advertised as WORKING then your complain will proceed.
I hope you can solve it man.
Good Luck
Thanks for the response. Met up locally and paid cash.
He left a picture of himself on the phone hahaha. Anything I can do with that? Selling shady material? I don't know what to do now! Cash is not king
Since you paid cash you don't have much in the way of recourse since you know about the guy, I assume.
You could pursue via small claims, check the local authorities, maybe this person is a known thief; but, I would let this be a lesson on verifying that something is fully functional before paying someone cash for anything. Sorry, I know it sucks. =-(
What I thought was, I'd become one of those deaf-mutes; or should I?
I've been hosed from a dude who sold me an atv that was a pile of shiz, so I know how you feel. Id contact him and see what he'll do for you, I'm sure he will tell you it was fine when he sold it, than id talk to the authorities, if all else fail than id have it repaired from samsung.

Caveat emptor at it's finest right here.
In your first post, you said you had it shipped. Then, in another post, you said you met up locally and paid cash. So which was it?
Either way, hopefully you didn't pay too terribly much for the phone, since you can generally find it brand new for under $100.
The only real chance you have at a remedy here is to call the seller back and hope he has a heart, or that this was just some misunderstanding.
In our credit driven economy, I always find it suspicious when people demand cash. I'm sure you learned your lesson, and hopefully it wasn't too costly.
Thanks for your contributions:
Called him/been texting with him this morning saying "I already spent the money" lol. Long story short, it is what it is. I've sold this guy my iPhone before and so I asked for my iPhone back instead. Of course, that's been sold as well. Well I have my iphone imei on file, so could very well just report it as stolen since this guy is unwilling to comply. Don't really have many options.
Sorry if this is off, because I dont know if u can install a rom if the phone is locked. But if the phone is locked it will not read a sim card. And depending on the sim card itself. It will not read any prr paid sim except tmobile and only att if it is not a gophone sim card

My friend just bought a Black 32GB just the phone and cable, no box or charger, for 300$ of CL here in the Seattle area, he just made sure he checked the IMEI using Swappa.com (they have a free IMEI/ESN checker, be careful with other sites that claim to check IMEI/ESN's for you, cause some of those are just phishing for these numbers, and once you put them in, they will tell you its ok, but then copy the number themselves and use it for cloning devices, or for changing the IMEI on a blacklisted phone, to the white-listed IMEI you gave them. Also once you use a legit IMEI checker, call your service provider and tell them you are purchasing this right now and have the dude talk to them to verify this, you could also call whatever provider he was using, if any, so that way there's record of him selling. or you could just meet at one of your service providers stores. If they aren't willing to do that, and are absolutely set on not meeting there, then yea, somethings up. But I would at least try the approach I suggested cause you may end up getting a very good deal, and if not, then you didn't lose anything cause you took steps to ensure your protection, so no harm no foul.
AND NEVER GO ALONE ! Guy or Girl. I am 27, 6'3", ex-military, and a Guitarist who is well known in the local scene so most people in the area know me, but I still don't do CL deals by myself. I even have my CHL and carry either a Glock 19 Gen 2, or a FNH FNP Tactical .45 (not always, but sometimes, I am an opencarry adovacate, but i wont get into that here lol), and still dont go alone, can't stress that one enough. a dear friend of mine was raped in Tacoma, WA while trying to buy a crib for her daughter and i wish everyday that she woulda called me or one of our friends to go with...
The final bit of advice I can give, is trust your gut. Sounds cliche, but its true. If you feel like somethings off, it prolly is, and even if it isn't, is your life, or overall well-being, worth getting less then 100$ off on a phone, ya dig.
Not sure I agree with the people who say if you don't have a box, its probably stolen. I sold a phone without a box because when I bought it, the person at the t-mobile store told me that I would get a $10 bill credit if I let them recycle the box. Sounded sketchy to me, but I did actually get the credit.
And running the IMEI through swaapa just proves that it hasn't been marked as stolen YET. The seller could stop paying payments (if they have tmo) and the IMEI gets blacklisted then.

Not worth
No go people. It's not about being stolen, I've had my phone stolen before and I needed to send my box and service agreement into Asurion. It could be that he has the box and may sell it but then report it stolen after the fact. I've done business on craigslist plenty of times and actually learned this the hard way about a year ago when I bought a Nexus 4 blacklisted from T-Mobile about 3 days after I bought it and was working. Always get the box with the IMEI sticker still attached when buying phones on craigslist, in most cases your better off than not.

[Q] Got scammed

So I bought a moto g 16gb unlocked on ebay. It was case open, but practically unused, and it was £20 cheaper so I bought it. There was an issue with the SIM, it wouldn't even detect it so I thought the pins were broken. Took it in for repair, turns out the IMEI is blacklisted and phone most likely stolen, so my question is, is it possible to change the IMEI and still make it work? Or get the IMEI unlocked? Is there any workaround for this or am I permanently screwed with this phone?
You are screw imei. Tampering is highly illegal, except this was done over ebay which means PayPal was in play bring it up with them. You may get your cash back also check the disscription make sure it wasn't buried in their

Okay, well I'm about done with drama, I know this guy is a scammer, I had some arguments and he's a total scammer and I can't be bothered to mess with paypal legal team and whatnot. You'd be pretty pissed off if someone stole your Moto G, fixed the IMEI blacklist then was able to sell it... unless you stole it joking
Seriously though bring it up with Paypal.
Re-read the Ebay listing and make sure it is NOT listed ANYWHERE in the description about being blacklisted.
Then, as everyone is suggesting, at least bring it to the attention of PayPal and eBay.
A blacklisted phone by IMEI can't be recovered ever again, because [Corrections allowed] when somebody calls to it's carrier to block their stolen phone by IMEI, they block/blacklist it and that wouldn't be suposed to turn on, or at least that's what i've read weeks ago. That blacklist would make that not even another countries carrier SIM cards work on that phone. :/
Technically that Moto G is now an iPod Touch. :/
I don't know 'that' well those online shopping sites (ebay, mercadolibre, amazon, etc.) but you could be able to report or, (corrections) take legal actions against the user that sold you that.
Just saying.

That's pretty low man.
Unless in the description he states in huge writing right at the top "BLACKLISTED DEVICE", which is what the first guy should have done.

no. his device is blacklisted only in his country. users abroad can use it
Did not know that...
So if I were to purchase a device online that has been blacklisted in, say, Europe, I could use it here in North America?
I just thought the IMEI be blocked everywhere.
Blacklisting is available only in the UK afaik, besides you should get a refund from eBay/PP/Seller, it's quite easy.
Otherwise it can be used in any other country w/o a problem.
Also there is a way to unblock it if you got the original box. Probably the idiot sold it and then reported it stolen.
Some time ago I was looking for American iPhones but some were black listed and I've been told that you can't use them here in Europe

Paypal protection is there for this sort of thing and is pretty easy to make a claim, why someone can't be bothered is a mystery indeed, unless there's more to this than has been told.
EBay Buyer Protection is a wondrous thing. Also for phones just go to swappa.com.

I just received a 2nd 128GB SGS6 from my provider. So what would you guys do? Googling experiences from other people who have had this happen to them with my provider returning the phone turned out to be quite a hassle (they want you to pat for shipping!!!!) If I understand the law correctly I can hold on to the phone and holding on to it does not mean I agree to but it. In other words I am not obliged to let them know and just wait for them if they charge me the phone becomes mine and I they must give me back my money. Anyway it's still sort of abusing other people's mistakes a bit....

It looks like you are in the EU, but these are the guidelines for the US. Short answer for here: you are legally allowed to keep it, however the US FTC recommends you write a letter to the sending company notifying them that A) you received it, and B) you are legally allowed to keep it, and that you are sending the letter to notify them of this so they do not bill you for the item. And then it goes on to suggest a fair option, which is allow the sender to pick up the item at their expense.
If your EU laws are the same, you got a free gift!

no a second from my provider. I extended my contract but made a mistake and had that order canceled. Than I reordered, this 2nd seems to be from the canceled order. My contract details show the correct details from the 2nd order. I have received my first phone correctly already 10 days ago
I would just keep it, they probably won't give it to charity.
Give it to me! So that I can use my 32Gb S6 for the development, and your 128 Gb one for personal use! LOL
I think the most practical and honest thing would be to hold on to it until they bill me next month. If the bill me the (subsidised ) price the phone legally becomes mine and rather than going through the hassle of return and refund just keep it for spare or just sell it myself. If they don't bill me I will return it to a Vodafone (which won't accept it going through experience from others ). I can then / have to keep onto it until they arrange pick up or shipping (which they won't )

Refurbished

Hey everyone.
So I was out looking for phones and I found a guy in delhi selling refurbished phones. They have a website, three branches as per say.
So I got myself a deal for one plus 6 in around 18k.
6gb,128gb version.
I am currently on Rei Note 5 Pro and thinking of making the change.
All I need is a little reponse if I should go ahead ?
I have paid 500 as booking fees, site seems legit. The guy seems legit so far.
He will give me the tracking Id tomorrow and the rest amount is COD.
What do you guys think of it ?
The device comes with 1 year warranty and 1 week replacement/ return.
Feels sketchy , seeking a 34 k mobile for 18 k May be the screen or some other internals may have been replaced. Also what type of warranty is he providing seller or company warranty and in India we have had enough tube getting warranty service from known brands it is risky to trust seller warranties
Looks like scam to me
Why would anyone sell a phone for 18k when it can easily fetch 30-35k INR?
Remember, If something seems too go to be true. It is most likely a scam of some kind. Don't waste your hard earned money on something fishy as this!

Seller profile on olx
That's all scam, it's being viral on OLX India. I have attached a screenshot. My friend paid ₹1,000 for S9+ in advance and the scammer blocked his phone number. Although he got the money back after reporting the scammer to police, luckily.

Please remove the gap in http as it wasn't allowing me to post external links.
P.S. Apart from that, they are using female names to attract people.

I had that it mind. I even told the guy that if he scammed me, I will go to the police.
But the thing is he has not. And he has been behaving really well so far.

Nah man.
I haven't got any reply from his side. Messages have not been delivered yet.
And there is no tracking id yet.
I am beginning to think the 500 deposit is gone for good.

Good luck getting back those 500 .. ?
Placed an order in the website mentioned
Hey just to see my luck I too placed an order in the website you mentioned. It didn't even ask me for the deposit of 500. By default it takes COD. I'm very very sure it's a scam as it didn't even ask me for any verification or confirmation

I dunno man. It seems good by the name of it.
My product is already been shipped.
I totally bonged the guy, asking him several questions.
He said these are custom duty free refurbished handsets. Sometimes unboxed.
People return or replace them frequently it seems.
Anyways, he is assuring me, he said i can live video call him while unboxing. I mean that counts for something I guess.
I will make a video of unboxing though.
Well lets hope for the best then.

So after my repeated attempts to get an ID from the guy made me cancel the order.
The guy , Mithlesh Sharma, employee of the website company or so he told me.
He sent me an Adhaar Card of some person he said was his boss.
I mean he couldn't send his own but apparently all employees have the boss's adhaar card.
plus it was all sketchy from the start..and with all the frauds goin on..i backed out.
as soon as I told him I will not be receiving the parcel as he failed to present a proof. He blocked me and did not respond on call.
moreover if you check olx, now i see these fake ads more than actual ones.
i mean a guy has posted ads in chandigarh, lucknow and delhi at the same time. Cash on delivery..buff..
I mean what if the box had just glass or bricks or soap inside. I choose to believe nobody would;ve listened then.
17k is a good amount.
might as well but the pocof1..lol
