[APP] Skyrocket Charger Test [Now in Google Play] - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

UPDATE (3/1/2014): Better late than never, the app is now available in the Google Play Store.
DOWNLOAD HERE
This version *should* work for both ICS and JB. I still don't have a Skyrocket, so can someone please download and test and let me know if it works? If it does not, I'll fix ASAP. I'm just publishing the same basic app to the Play Store to make it a little easier for you folks to install it after a flash.
If the Play Store version doesn't work for ICS and/or JB, v0.1 in this thread is for ICS, v0.3 is for JB
I created an app in Tasker's App Factory to test your Skyrocket's charger.
The goal of this app is to help you determine if your charger is providing a fast charge and to see if your charger will cause the dreaded wakelock. You should be able to plug in your charger and launch the app to see your charger type and current reported in the notification bar.
This app was created to accompany my thread on Skyrocket battery life here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1759541
The apk is attached. Just install it and launch the app when you have a charger connected.
For Reference:
The app runs a cat of these files: /sys/class/power_supply/battery/charging_source & /sys/class/power_supply/battery/batt_current_adc
***Version 0.3 for Jelly Bean ROMs cats batt_charging_source instead of charging_source***
It uses charging_source and the values below to determine the charge type
0= No charger connected.
1= USB Normal Charge. There is 5VDC on pins 1&4 and data current is detected on 2&3
2= AC Fast Charge. AC Fast Charge. There is 5VDC on pins 1&4, and pins 2&3 are BRIDGED.
6= AC Regular Charge. This is the charge state that creates the wakelock. There is 5VDC on pins 1&4, and pins 2&3 are OPEN/DISCONNECTED.
The app uses the batt_current_adc value to determine the charge current. Anything below 500 means your charger provides a normal charge. Anything above that will likely be around 900 and that is considered a fast charge.
The Tasker project XML is attached in the second ZIP if anybody wants to see what the app is doing.
Version 0.1
First attempt
V 0.3
Should work with Jelly Bean
Updated minimum OS to 4.1
Changed cat of "charging_source" to "batt_charging_source"

Installed this and tested it on 3 chargers, official, cheap brand, and car. Seems to work great!
So far all I notice is that it just doesn't launch if the device isn't plugged in (understandably), and the notification icon persists through closing the app (very minor)
I'm going to try it with another skyrocket and some knockoff batteries and will let you know!
Very nice app!
Edit: I'm running CM9 RC2/Nightly, just to give as much info as I can

Thanks for the feedback. I was trying to get it to report "No charger connected" when one isn't connected, but couldn't get it working. I'll try adding that again on my next version.

This Is Awesome! It allowed me to figure out which charges in my house were actually doing the trick. Thanks

Hey everything works as you said. Good work.

Excellent, thanks for this. Is there anyway to integrate the wakelock charging check into this as well?

The app should tell you that your charger will cause a wakelock if it's one that will. Is it not doing that for you?

I'm on AOKP and I also just get #ma. Perhaps I'm referencing back to the post incorrectly but I don't follow how to interpret this to wake lock issue.

If your charger is recognized as type 6, it will give you a notification like in the attached image. Type 6 causes a wakelock.

I'm on CM10. With the USB cable that came with my skyrocket plugged into my computer I get "slow charge @ 461mA. With the SGS3 USB cable it says "Fast Charge @ 502mA."
Have you checked out the Hidden Features app? It seems like some of the features don't work on my phone but has some nice battery info features.

Has anyone tried this app on any other device?

I really need more info before I can tell you anything for sure.
Is the charger the stock Samsung charger or is it one you picked up at walmart or some other store?
My Samsung charger has two parts, the data cable with micro USB on one end that plugs in the phone and USB on the other that plugs into a pc. And the other part is a plug that plugs in the wall and the USB data cable plugs into it. Now is your charger all one piece or is the data cable separate from the wall plug?
Sent from my two cents which ain't worth much.

no. there is a micro usb port on the side of the adapter for charging.

Problems with 2012 Camaro.

Hey I have a '12 Camaro SS and it has its own USB port (for iPhone and iPod.) But I charge my S3 on it. Every time I connect to it I get this message

I don't care about music since it has an auxiliary input but I just hate the message. Can I get rid of it? Also the Camaro tries to read it so it's just an awkward silence when the radio goes out can I do anything so my s3 won't be detected but charged.?

Buy a car charger. The computer in your car is incompatible. Much like radios having iPod support. But yours doesn't have android support. You can eliminate the wires which are not needed for charging, but that's risky in its self.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
You have two options. The first is to just get a car charger. The other is to enable UMS mode. Doing that would allow your camaro to read the phone as a regular USB thumb drive. I'm not sure if it would work for the internal SD card alone though, but it would definitely solve your problem if you had an external card in there (you could even put music on the card and play that through your car).

Since cables have molded plugs, you cannot mod them easily. There are two USB cables available that come wired to prevent the phone from getting a data signal on the cable. This would keep both the radio and the phone from sensing each other. There is a problem however. Charging from a USB port most new phones limit their current draw because USB can only supply 500 milliamps (1/2 Amp). When an AC charger is used the phone draws more current and charges significantly faster. Fooling the radio's connection to the phone could result in damage to the USB port.
The use for these cables is to fool the phone when plugged into 12 volt car chargers that have USB connections. Most of these chargers are detected as a USB connection by the phone, and the phone refuses to draw more current. You can see whether the phone thinks it is charging from USB or AC in the settings menu or with many battery widgets.
Amazon has two modded cables one a "Naztech" and the other from PureGear.

If someone confirms all micro USB OTG cable are a generic standard and works across brands (ie no difference between Samsung or LG phones) I'll try to pick one up over the weekend and try it for myself.
So I bought a USB OTG cable. Bloke in the store said they're all the same so long as the connectors fit. Micro USB at one end, female full size USB at the other.
One at a time I tried plugging in a:
USB memory stick
USB keyboard
USB mouse
None of them gave any kind of feedback. The led under the mouse did not even light up.
Maybe just need a powered USB hub? Or a Y cable... one end that boosts the power for USB?

Just tried the OTG cable with a wall socket powered USB hub. Then just a mouse into said hub. Same with just a memory stick. Still no good. The cat log shows no related activity when anything is plugged into the OTG cable. Will be able to eliminate the possibility this OTG cable being faulty by checking with a Samsung Note user later today.
Otherwise... now that more of you guys have ICS on your original O3D's, maybe you too can share with us your results with OTG too.

In the thread I mentioned just above, there are links to download custom made modules to use with stock kernels that don't support OTG. The Optimus series is not in the list of supported devices but perhaps iodak could build them for us like he did with the OC modules.

I'm hardly an engineer, but the specs say the DT-900 is only 300ma. Maybe that's causing the problem with the N4.
I tired both the Nokia puck and the JBL speakers in a Verizon store. Both had the infamous charging/not charging problem.

I've seen it mentioned that the reliability of the charging depends on whether NFC is turned on or off. Think it was mentioned by someone on Engadget. Not sure how that would affect the Qi charging, but worth a shot I suppose.

Love how " Droidz" disappeared when asked to take a pic/video as proof since everyone else had experienced the disconnect/connect issue... So I call bull until he provides proof. Don't waste you time or cash until he does.

Guys, it very may work for Droidz, if you read The Verge's report you will notice that the charging issue seems to not affect ALL Nexus 4's, read below is an excerpt from The Verge's article
""The Nexus 4 and the Nokia DT-900 are supposed to properly work together," says Menno Treffers, chairman of the Wireless Power Consortium. Indeed, not everyone is having trouble pairing the Nexus 4 to the DT-900: Engadget reported success, for instance. But a single bad experience instills doubt in a standard that needs as much traction as it can get early on in the game."

Best wireless charger?

I found this one on amazon and I'm tempted by the price, has anyone bought this? Would it work with our phones? Or the touchstone?

This has been discussed.
Do not order a touchstone charger, it won't work.
The LG one does. Mines on its way.

The lg one is pretty cheap compared to other ones . was a bit skeptical. Can you confirm if it works when you get it? Either Here or through pm please a video would be nice.

There are numerous posts on XDA with people using them.
I would, however there's a thread that discusses the beeping from this unit.

People have confirmed it working there.

Wrong thread, but: How much energy will I loose, if I charge the phone wirelessly? Thx.

I think these chargers can be UP TO 70% efficient.

I understand the Nexus 4 uses this chip, and the datasheet is here.
So, the receiver is about 90% efficient when charging. I am not sure, but as this is a charge controller too I think that quoted efficiency from page 12 is for the DC provided to the battery. This is quite good as obviously a non-wireless charge controller phone would have some losses when charging a battery.
I presume that by AC they mean from the wireless antenna rather than mains, so you would have to include the waste in the plug/transmitter too.
Edit: It looks like most of the losses are in the transmission, as the efficiency there is much lower. In that datasheet it suggests more like 72-74% maximum, which is about right if the manufacturers quote 70%.
Check this one out guys. Looks quite nice and seems to have a rubbery surface to prevent the phone from slipping.

They sell it on amazon.de but don't seem to ship to Denmark
Found it on ebay for £37 here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Philips-D...degeräte_Dockingstationen&hash=item27cce3049d
Just bought it from the above seller. Will post about it when I receive it and let everyone know what it is like

Hey, I have received an Energizer mat and can confirm that it does indeed work with no hiccups. Only problem is that the glass back makes the phone very slippery on the matte-like finish on the Mat. Until I figure out a way to make it stay it's pretty much a nuisance and not usable.

Just find an invisible shield on clearance (designed for some old junker phone) and stick it on the surface of the charger.
No slip.

Did you pull off the clear film on the charging mat? That made mine sticky and it holds perfect.

I bought the Panasonic tm101 in white so it was easier to see the phone in the dark and I don't have to position it.
The LG one works, but you'll have to open it up and destroy the speaker.

I picked up the Energizer Qi mat also and can confirm it works great. What I did to keep the phone from sliding is went and purchased one of those cheap grippy dashboard mats for cars and stuck it into the charger. No more slippy slippy.
