Codename Android 2.0 Q&A - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

How's the GPS on this ROM? About to give it a whirl but I am not planning on leaving my basement apartment today. I am laid up due to severe back pain.
Seems SourceForge is having issues, they're telling me 3-4 hours to download the ROM and only one DL Server o_0
Any chance this will be available via Goo.im / GooManager?

I added the GPS package (which stated working for people) but don't know if I set the lines w permissions for gps file correctly or not cause I can't test my self (I always can't test wifi signal, gps and bluetooth due to my condition ) and I will definitely find a new host for my projects in future cause SF gave me some trouble w uploading, too...

Cool, I would suggest goo.im for convenience. If I feel up to it (and if this DL ever finishes) I might take a stroll outside later and let you know how the GPS works.

I haven't used the ROM long enough to truly judge and this is under lots of heavy use; Downloading all my apps, pre-caching my county on google maps via wifi, couple of navigation checks, etc. Also my screen was on pretty much the whole time on full brightness. Give it another day or so for more accurate results.

This ROM seems really snappy, with the spare parts animations set to fast. Phone calls are nice and clear and GPS managed to lock on withing a couple of minutes inside my basement apartment.
I am curious about the "restart" vs "reboot" option, restart seems to bypass part of the booting process (skipping the Team Acid logo). The Bootanimation is really cool but it still shows after disabling it in performance options.
I was a bit surprised that there seems to be no CM9 theming support, unless I am missing something Screen Candy only seems to only work when you hit the "Try it!" button, but not when the phone goes to sleep (by itself or manually).
Also what's up with the 4g section in the network preferences section? When I try to enable it it just comes up with "unknown" and the check box stays de-selected.

R3velation issue

First, sorry for the new thread & odd spot. I looked for 30 minutes to see if I was duplicating a question, but the search function on this app seems to do absolutely nothing. I also can't post in dev, yet; so I hope The Collective checks this forum.
R3velation works great, and looks even better; I'm very happy I gave it a look.
That said, I have 2 issues:
1. The battery drains FAST. Sitting idle with WiFi & Bluetooth turned off, I lose 50% of the charge in 6 hours. I'm still researching how to operate things like the voltage app that came with the ROM, but if anyone has tips I'd love to hear them.
2. The main reason for this post; sometimes when the screen is off, it just won't come back on. The only thing I can find that works is to remove the battery. Any ideas what this might be!?
Thanks to The Collective for this awesome ROM!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using xda premium
Question 2 is a sod which they are working figuring out what is causing it. add for battery drain there is an app on the forums called better battery stats you may have to search for it on a computer to find it because i agree the search on this xda app sucks. But that app will help find the cause of the battery drain

I'm having a major issue with R3V v2 and I need help fixing this ASAP because it is the best ROM I have flashed to date!!!! Everything works like clockwork except data. I can send text messages but any other app that requires a data connection does not work (no network connection). Does this sound like a modem flash error? X- I downloaded the ROM from your sig.
Have you tried re-flashing? I had a similar issue with a different ROM on my tablet. Re-flashing the ROM fixed it.

Yes, I had tried re-flashing the original ROM I had downloaded for Experiments signature. That file might have been faulty? idk. Last night after posting about my issue and not wanting to wait another moment to enjoy this awesome ROM I did some research on XDA and found a post where Nun had a link to download R3V v2 but the file had the letter "F" at the end so I figured it to be a different file. Long story short, a little late for that huh? IT WORKED!! Thanks to the Collective, especially Experiment for this splendid ROM.
I know, right? This ROM is the nicest I've seen for Android, yet. Run R3velation OTA, and look at some of the further mods you can get for it. Under "Themes", there's one called "Mongo Toggles (blue)" by X and Mongo41. It looks VERY sweet. The light amounts of blue mixed with the beautiful toggles for the quick panel are awesome. I need to get in touch with them and ask them to make one that has purple in place of the blue. I'd never need another theme if I had that, heh.
Glad you were able to get up and running.
Did you battery life ever smooth out? There is a typically a period of three days or so where you need to wait for a rom to, "settle" before the battery will calm down. Then it should start acting much better.
The SOD issue is one that has been driven to the point of extinction. I ran R3V for a long time, and had no issues. I am now running another rom, and I am having issues. It's all what your phone likes and doesn't like I think. Good luck figuring it out man.

Thanks for the heads up. I just put the KL2 on the phone, we'll see how that does me.
Maybe it's my imagination, but this modem seems awesome. Battery life seems to have tripled, and I'm not dropping calls at the dead spots in town. What all does the modem cover, just phone & AT&T data? It doesn't handle Bluetooth or WiFi, does it?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using xda premium
As far as I understand, a modem is only responsible for pulling the voice and data connections from your provider. The best explanation I've found on it is from this thread here:http://http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22913686&postcount=1
That's what I thought (I had originally misunderstood, and thought there was a modem for voice, for data, for WiFi, for Bluetooth...found out a couple weeks ago that was wrong).
Anyway, that KL2 modem is great. I've only lost 13% of my battery in the last 9 hours with WiFi, Data, GPS, and auto-rotation all turned on. This is as opposed to 50% in 8 hours with WiFi only turned on. (Idling both times, as I was asleep.) It also seems to not be affected by the same dead spots the other modem had, as I didn't drop calls while driving past them like I used to.
I keep getting a FC when trying to open play store help please

Minor Issues?!

Hello guys!
To being with a small introduction about me, as this is my first post on this forum
-
I am a new member for this forum! But certainly not a new one for the android world. This is my third droid, previously i have used Galaxy Ace and Galaxy S.
I am a student, and i love exploring new features on android. I am an app explore and i think i will soon start trying my hand on few rom developments! ( I will be getting a 5 months vaction! )
I would promise that i will be one of the active members from now on!
Coming to the device, i have it for the last few months now.. but started facing some minor problems! Wonder if anyone else have the same..
1 . When i play games for a while, my device heats up and i thought since this is summer, my body temperature might be the reason. But, i think i am wrong.. as the device heats up when i connect my phone to charger for a recharge! Wonder if someone has been facing this? Is it a software issue?
I am on 2.3.5 Official Indian Stock!
2. This is a weird problem!!! When i try to un-install any application ( By going to the main application menu >>>> then press edit and then touch the app and un-install method ) here, the app which i touch does not get un-installed and the app next to it gets un-installed! And trust me, i am not pressing the wrong app!!
And the best part of my device is, previous all my devices needed a restart after about 250 hours! It would have had some problem like wifi not switching on or some thing else and a restart would fix it. But my R has been running for more than 800 hours without a switch off and it really amazes me! But i am loving it!
And once again HELLO TO ALL MY NEW FRIENDS! would love to work with you all for the development of this amazing device!

1. Heating problem is common with all the devices nothing to worry about it, if you are using any covers on you phone remove it because when i was using mine with Silicon case it was becoming very heat at the time of the charging and playing games, now i've removed it and my phone is ok.
2. May be some problem with S/W try Factory Rest and clear the cache, if it is not solving the issue try to flash the Stock Firmware again.
Heating is normal, when I plug charger my battery temp goes upto 45 to 48 degrees. And also its a dual core device so if u do heavy use it will probably get hot

Herpderp iPad2.
No I don't care if you're anti-Apple.
1. About the device heating up while charging avoid using it for doing any processor intensive tasks e.g. Gaming while charging & remove the cover/jacket as told by mj. vikram.
About the device heating up during daily use, as you told the ambient temps do play a part in increasing the temperature odd the device.
2. You can uninstall the apps from the Task Manager by going to the Downloaded tab. You should not face the problem in that menu as it had only one option i.e. 'Uninstall'
Do update here if it solves the issue.
Hope this helps.
Do a data reset for the problem with unistalling apps or try reinstalling firmware

I can uninstall perfectly from task manager!
And as far as screen guard is concerned, I don't think its a issue because I don't face any issue while typing or while playing or while using the screen! Its just with uninstalling, as mentioned above!
Seems strange..

Ok there's an idea to check whether its a hardware problem/software problem.
Install go launcher from market then try to uninstall any app using the Go launcher by using the same edit option as in the stock launcher and uninstalling any app by clicking on it.
If all goes fine then its a software problem but if not then its a hardware problem i.e. touchscreen problem.
Do update what's the outcome.
Hope this helps.

[Q&A][OFFICIAL] CyanogenMod 10 (JellyBean) Nightly Discussions

This phone is not my daily driver, and I'll do as much as I can, but I also have a day job
I would appreciate all discussion stay to this thread, and I'd love it if there were some community self-help.
State of the Union (for the Blaze 4G) (2012-11-05)
Current state of the ROM. This likely applies to any of the ROMs using the kernel sources coming from CyanogenMod for this device.
The device mostly works as it should. There are some problems currently people are having with this phone, and I will detail those here:
1) First and foremost, the Screen of Death. This is a problem that isn't only occuring to us. Just a couple of days ago I asked what the status was and the answer is that they have no idea. Some think it's specific to our platform (msm8660, which we share with a number of other phones), except that I've experienced it on other platforms, like my S3. Some think it's related to the display, except that not all the devices on this platform use the same display. Because of the randomness and lack of verbosity in the bug, they don't have a way of getting any useful data on it. dmesg and logcats are pointless. They are working hard trying to find it, but keep in mind that it isn't just us.
2) Saving pictures somewhere other than local storage. Yes, you should be able to save to your SD card. I think this is coming sooner rather than later. The following patch popped up over the weekend and adds in the functionality: http://review.cyanogenmod.com/25848. The Q&A responses to it look good. I suspect it'll go through a revision or two once they work out the bugs and then it'll get incorporated.
3) Saving app data somewhere other than the local storage. While I'm looking into it and talking to officials, I'm fairly confident that this behavior won't change in the official CM builds. Some of the other CM derived roms may allow this, and you should probably look there to solve this problem. The sad thing fact that our devices shipped with 1.2 GB of internal storage. I don't know why Samsung hates us so much, but they do. And therefore, the default behavior for CM is bad for those of us that want to game. Some users have reported success using an app called Directory Bind. I haven't used it and can't vouch for it, however it looks like it'd let you point specific directories from your internal storage to a space on your external storage. This is definitely safer than the mount swapping ideas that have been going around.
4) BLN isn't 100% unbuggy. Yes, BLN is buggy. BLN is the Button Lights Notifications. As of 11/10 we are on the official CM cypress-touchkey driver. However it seems there's still a bug there. Occasionally if you unlock during a notification, the lights won't come on. Sorry, that's just the way it is.
5) Camera Flash won't disable. This is unfortunate. Apparently if you tell the camera to disable flash, it simply won't do it. It's towards the bottom of my list, but it is definitely there.
The most important thing to keep in mind is that CyanogenMod version 10 is a moving target. Lots of stuff is happening, and until it's labeled as "stable" (and probably even for some time after that), we will continue to experience bugs.
Thank you

Make sure to check the MD5 sum of your download(s). Make sure you wipe dalvik, and do a factory/data reset from CWM. It might also help to format /system.
I used this ZIP in my last install and it has worked fin for me so far... I've actually found it to be fairly stable...

How has the data seemed? The "regular" stuff seemed to work great for me, but since I don't use this phone on a regular basis I don't know how to judge the 3/4g performance.
Also, I'd love to hear about maps performance (GPS, compass, etc).
I know I'm opening a can of worms by asking about this stuff (everyone will be hyperaware of things that never bothered them before), but it's useful to know as feedback.
Data seems normal to me. GPS and compass seem to be working fine for me also.

Surprisingly this is actually more stable than CM9 lol. The camera is smoother and has more options and the Google account synching is easier. The transitions are fast and cool too.
While I'm not a fan of the navigation bar due to the smaller screen, I do love the easy access to the multitasking. It makes switching apps easier. Is this something that you could possibly port without the navigation bar when you fix the buttons? Like give an option in the settings to replace the search button for the multitasking action? I can access the searching from the top widget. Just throwing ideas out lol.
Also the UI sounds are not working, along with the keyboard sounds. I also get this message once in a while about the "CM updater stopped working" it's not a big deal. I haven't used the data much, so I'll report in a little while. Worked fine during the little moment I used it.
Update:
UI sounds are working. Never mind. Let's see if it's consistent or not lol.

Glad to hear it's working out stable for you!
I'm not a Java/Android developer per se... I'm a bit of a self-taught hacker and the majority of my work for this was really about the kernel and forward porting the changes from 3.0.8 samsung sources to the 3.0.43 that CM uses. Adding things to the settings seems a bit daunting to me, but I'll look into it. Always wanted a reason to actually start developing for android
I can tell you that on my SGS3 (and I imagine on other phones as well), the home button, when as a long press, brings up the multitasking menu. This would probably be the immediate answer to your situation for this phone.
I could also possibly just offer up a flashable zip to remap the key and that would be much easier for me.
My long term goal really is to get this into github (and into the CM nightly cycle) and get my kernel changes into the cm kernel for msm8660 so I don't have to maintain the patches myself.

I meant to mention that they start working after the first time you adjust the volume. This seems to be a general CM10 bug as I've had it (and seen people complain about it) on the SGS3.

[Q] Screen too sensitive

So, I have this Transformer Pad TF300TG (it has about 3 weeks now) and since I've first used it, I've noticed that the screen is way too sensitive. Just hoovering your finger above the screen may trigger a touch, without actually touching it. It is really annoying at times. Below there's a video showing the issue. I know this is not right, since it's not my first touchscreen device (I had 2 iPod Touch, Optimus 2X and now an iPad and Nexus 4) where none ever presented any kind of weird issues like this one on the digitizer.
What I'd like to know is, first of all, is this a issue or a "feature" in this tablet? Is there any way I can reduce the sensivity trough a hidden configuration menu or app (no root here, sorry)? Or should I get it serviced?
I've managed to take a picture:

You must have force fields around your fingers!
On all my other devices I have to touch the screen considerably to trigger a touch, except the TF300, where it triggers around 1mm apart from the screen.
At the very least you have a really cool picture for it, aye? I can't reproduce this issue on mine, but it could be a kernel thing (unlikely, though). You're not in a humid environment/sweating, are you? It just looks like there's something allowing current from your finger to the screen.

Thank you. A good camera (and manual focus) makes any noob picture look good!
And I'm not sweaty or in a humid environment. Pretty standard here. I think it's a firmware issue (very likely can be fixed only with a replacement), not a OS thing.
Jup same here, it reacts when you hold your finger a mm above the screen, which sometimes cause "ghost touches" for me

Yes, it's really annoying. I gave this tablet to my father (I use an iPad), he's always mistouching things. Asus had so much hype about "quality", and that's what you get, a "ghost touch" machine. They didn't even bother answering my support request. Sad.

I think some people just have greater conductivity through there skin. I know some people who it happens to and some that don't. And to the person who said ghost touches a sensitive capacitive screen is much different that those.

Why would they charge it? It's an unmodified tablet and it's defective. We do get a lot of mistouches because of this issue and it's really annoying. Also, the battery is delivering subpar performance. If I knew all of this quality issues beforehand I would have spent my money on another iPad Mini (virtually the same price for the 16gb model). Also, the performance has been substandard, that's not what I expected from a quad-core tablet.

My bad I had the assumption it was unlocked. It can deliver excellent performance bit to unlock the potential. You need to unlock and flash a rom like Cromi and a kernel. But all that is at your own discretion.

I had my time messing with ROMS and I no longer do it (I did in my previous phone, LG Optimus 2X). Usually it's a lot of work to get an unstable system. And to get that extra performance usually means overclocking. The battery is not god as is, can you imagine overclocked?

I hover around here because I like to see what's going on. Also, it's here most hardware related problems are reported, so it's a good resource. Maybe when the warranty goes away I do indeed replace the ROM, since it's been reported they do not cover warranty on modified products.

It's hit or miss. Sometimes they do still honor the hardware warranty on an unlocked device its not unheard of. But there is a chance they won't.

I think they will definitely honor it if something really bad happened and they can't read the flash or boot the device, like a fried motherboard. There's no way they can tell if it was locked or not.
On one hand, I think it's not fair to completely void the warranty of unlocked devices, but we have to bear in mind that a lot of people dangerously overclock their devices (among other modifications). I do believe that they do this because a lot of people with modified devices complain due to software issues (without realizing it). It's complicated.

Yes, there's a chance of that happening. But the worse part is that it may take like a month or so to get a new or repaired unit. I'm hesitant to sending it in because of that. Everything around here is slow.

battery apps waste battery, doing stuff that you can do yourself. like turn off gps for example.

Honestly I tried this app and I actually noticed my battery usage went up, reason for that was you have to keep gps on all the time. My suggestion is you want to save battery is turn off all your non essentials, like Bluetooth, nfc syncing, Wi-Fi and GPS, even auto brightness. Get your self a kernel like Franco or something and tweak your voltage and frequency.

I found that a combination of:
- Franco kernel r34
- Greenify
- Xposed framework / gravity box module then modify the auto brightness settings lower (tune to your personal preference)
Made the most difference. After that I checked which apps caused the most wake locks and removed them. That is why I uninstalled Battery Guru as it was a major culprit.

I'm not saying that, I just commented on what was effective for me. Also that Battery Guru had the highest number of wakelocks on my device. Wakelocks are well known as a major factor negatively impacting battery drain.
The combination of adjusting screen brightness while maintaining a level of automation, changing to a kernel that focuses on sipping battery while maintaining performance and finally dealing with battery drain culprits has significantly helped my battery longevity.
Your-mileage-will-vary as usage patterns are so very personal. For example I do not play any games on my phone but play videos and music when on public transport. As long as you regularly do nandroid backups through the recovery of your choice (e.g. TWRP, CMW ... etc) or an app like Online Nandroid Manager (see playstore) you can experiment to find out what helps and just restore a backup if you do not like your changes.
I tried this app on my S2, it woke my phone over 1000 times in 8 hours, before I swiftly uninstalled it. Lol

This app, juice defender, battery 2x....etc....may work for very light users, that pick up their phone rarely, since it will turn off data and whatnot when your phone sits there.
But moderate to heavy users will see battery life probably decrease due to all the starting and stopping of services. And watch the Wakelocks you get.

It's basically an advertising platform that has news and announcements.
If you actually want to save battery use Tasker or Llama to automate your radios (WiFi, GPS, BT, etc). These are light weight apps that use minimum CPU cycles and won't wake your phone unless you specifically tell them to.
I tell everyone who will listen to avoid Snapdragon Battery Guru but unfortunately many people are convinced that it must be helping simply because it's associated with Qualcomm.
