Hello,
I'm a first time poster looking for a little help. I've had my Verizon SIII for about a week now and almost everything about the phone I have loved with the exception of the battery life. Given the 2100mah battery I was expecting much more. I tend to be a fairly light user throughout the day at work, I have the screen brightness turned down, all data is off, and I really only am using it for texting, maybe a little bit of gaming. I have found that if I unplug at about 8am by about 6 or 7pm the battery will be nearly completely drained.
Noticing that this seemed to be a fairly common problem I started doing some research to determine the source of this. First, by looking at the battery stats I observed the same problem that many others observe, a heavy drain in standby mode.
ttp://i.imgur.com/2drJy.png (since I'm a first time poster I can't add external links, please just add an H to the beginning of the url)
So going off of this I started trying to determine the cause of this drain in standby mode. I should also mention that at times the phone does seem to get warm in the bottom left region of the back of the phone. I had read one tutorial explaining about wakelocks so I decided to check that out. I downloaded GSam Battery and CPU Spy to see if something was preventing my phone from entering standby mode properly. However my phone was entering deep sleep as shown below, so this confused me a bit. But clearly there is some issue visible in the standby mode of my phone, sometimes the battery will drain ridiculously fast (as high as 1% every 5 - 10 minutes). And keep in mind that this is while virtually everything, data included, is disabled. So that eliminates the possibility of it simply having to search for a signal in a weak area.

Basically I'm having a tough time getting to the root cause of this problem. I feel like there's some little software issue in there that is draining it. But I've been pretty smart about the apps that I've downloaded, I've stuck with only very common and popular ones. So would anybody have any clue to how I could identify and address the source of my battery drain?
Thanks

You don't have to thank me there is a button for that
Download and try Watchdog Lite. It's a really good monitor for finding out which apps are acting up.
This doesn't exactly answer your question, but can help with your problem. There are programs that can help to drastically improve battery life by turning off data (3g\4g) while the screen is off. This can double your battery life or more, especially for lite/moderate users. Most of these programs work by turning on the data 1 minute out of every 15 the screen is off. That way you still get email, and notifications. You still get txt and phone real time, as they do not rely on data. When you turn the screen on data is turned on, when you actually would want to use it. Especially in 4g areas this really saves battery, as 4g is a battery hog.
Battery Defender is my favorite. I feel like I should be paid for this advertisement...
Do you have BATTERY SAVER option ENABLED in settings? That makes a huge difference for me.
It sounds like you are still stock, but I used the Root66 image and after that started having huge battery drain. I did a factory reset to no avail, so then moved to Synergy Rom. Since then, I've had outstanding battery life! not sure if you were thinking about going this route, but it has worked for me. Synergy is debloated so I assumed Verizon crap to be the culprit.
The images I saw were all at 100% battery. Those are not very helpful. A shot of your battery stats at the end of the day would be a lot more useful.
Please note that Cell Standby reports incorrectly at the moment on the S3. Unless you do the fix linked above, it will nearly always be at the top, but it does not actually drain that much battery, it is simply a reporting issue.

Hi guys,
I am hoping someone may notice what's going on with my device... I am at a loss. Attaching all screenshots and dump file from BetterBatteryStats (may need to open in Wordpad for the spacing work).
To summarize, my battery drain is very inconsistent. Some days it lasts a long time, 2-3 hrs of screen time, can stay in standby for over 2 days. And then some days it drains very quickly, like right now - it drops by 3% every time I basically turn on the screen to check e-mail/messages. I think we can all agree that 4 hrs of standby and 15 mins of screen usage should not use 50% of the battery.
I have tried two different units (swapped thinking my battery was faulty), and the issue persists - so I think it has to be something related to my software setup. I am running the AT&T LTE stock phone, 1.85 firmware. I have tried doing the full factory reset (clearing all settings/apps/storage), and cycling the battery.
Some folks have mentioned that my drain seems to begin when I hit an area with low/no signal (I take the subway to work in the morning), and then persists - as if something is trying to sync/connect somewhere, but can't... so it keeps looping and draining the battery.
My autosync is only on for Gmail, Google calendar (not contacts), and Weather (every 2 hrs only). Phone is not overly hot, battery is at 86 degrees right now. My brightness is at 40%.
If someone has any ideas, please share - I am at a loss, I don't know what to do... but battery life has got to be better than this, at least in terms of consistency.
Thanks so much.
Little to no signal is a battery killer.
Right, but the phone drains like crazy after the signal is regained. It doesn't drain much while there is no signal. Besides, what are people supposed to do when they lose signal? Restart the phone afterwards or lose all battery?
Also, some days it works just fine (and I still take subway to work on those days and lose signal) - so not consistent. I don't think it's simply the fact that no signal kills my battery in this case.

But OP is getting huge drops in the battery level when network signal is green (full signal strength); and also screen mostly off. Which is very odd . . .
Sounds like there are other folks experiencing this issue, related to signal drop in LTE (riding a subway, etc.):

Step 1: Remove sense.
Step 2: Proceed to experience the best battery life I have ever seen on an Android device.
If you do not want to remove sense then you need to take a very close look at your apps because something in the apps is responsible. I personally think its HTC sync or some other rediculous service that comes preinstalled on the phone. Something is trying to sync or communicate and is hanging.
Like I said, get rid of sense and save yourself the hassle. Nova Prime + AOKP = the best mobile operating system known to man.
I am a bit new when it comes to Android and all the various ROMs out there. To remove Sense, do I need to unlock the bootloader and install a custom ROM? Or can I install an alternate launcher (like Nova Prime)?
Thanks!

To remove sense you'll need to install a custom ROM such as AOKP or cm9. Those will remove sense. You can find AOKP in the general section under the title "AOKP lives!!" and cm9 under developement. They both have flaws such as the camcorder not working, but considering the flaws that sense has out of the box, you're much better off in my opinion. cm9 and AOKP will get infinitely better in the coming weeks as they iron out the bugs. Sense is disgusting bloatware that is piled on top of stock android. It takes a ton of resources and makes even the simplest tasks a chore. Once you go to an AOSP ROM I don't think you'll ever go back. I can multi task away for hours and come back to another app that wasn't closed out of memory. Try that with sense.
To install a ROM you'll need to:
Root
unlock bootloader
Install a custom recovery
Backup your entire ROM with that recovery
Flash whatever you want
All of the directions of how to do this are in the dev section. Let me know if you have any questions.
Installing a AOSP ROM (such as CM9 and AOKP) will completely "desense" your phone.
Installing a ROM based on stock (like all of the CleanROMs) will get rid of most of the HTC stuff but Sense will still be there.
Thank you seh and rohan, I will give that a try. Will read up on it and let you know if I have questions.

Seriously just go check it out in the dev section. If you are unsure or have any questions at all come back here and let me know. I can walk you through all of it. Don't be afraid of ruining your device or anything like that. This stuff is all one click these days and isn't bad at all. I can literally walk you through every step if needed. Just check it out yourself though, I bet you'll be fine
Thanks again. Reading through the dev section now. Seems relatively straight-forward... just need to get home to get this stuff going.

FYI, the root process failed for me 2 times before it took. Just keep trying and it will go. Once you are rooted, you'll never have to plug your phone into a computer again. You can do anything from the device, no questions asked.

Here is what I'd do before installing custom ROMs etc. (Not that I am discouraging you against that but, if your device is indeed faulty then unlocking the bootloader will void your warranty and HTC may not replace/fix it.) And, you'd have wasted countless hours trying to fix the issue with software that was hardware to begin with.
1. Run the battery test *#*#3424#*#*, press 'Accept', Go to More and run 'Battery Test'. Follow instructions in there. If the battery isn't faulty i.e. after one hour the battery level is still greater than 85% (The function test shows a different number) your battery is fine. Else, ask HTC to fix it.
2. If your phone passes the battery test; turn on 'Airplane mode' when you get into an area with spotty signal. This should address your suspicion regarding that.
3. Display: display seems to be draining the most battery - doesn't mean it actual does but, at least the phone seems to think it is. Try reducing brightness to around 20% for a day - I know it is too dim but, it will eliminate that possibility.
4. If you have facebook installed - turn off all syncing. Especially the HTC sense social plugin always tries to update it from facebook.
Based on the screenshots, it seems that the battery drains very quickly when you have the screen on, even with good signal strength.
Lastly, as an alternative to point 2 above, turn on airplane mode for 1 hour and turn off sync, remove all widgets from home screen(s) and just use the phone on wifi with stock browser - see if it drops as quickly or not.
Having gone through it, I understand how frustrating this is. In the end, I rooted and completely desensed my phone (only keeping essentials - basically recreating clean rom). I do not use Auto Sync but manually engage it every few hours to update everything. And, keep the brightness to 30% most of the time.
Hope this helps, good luck.
john_tillman, thanks for the suggestions as well!
1. I did the battery test, finished at 92%. So I think I'm OK there.
2. I will try doing airplane mode before subway rides going forward, will see if that helps.
3. Something is funky with the way the battery meter app is measuring this. Basically the battery doesn't move - and then when I unlock the phone, it drops like 3%. So my suspicion is that I'm losing battery, it just doesn't get updated until I fire up the screen.
4. Yep, all syncing is turned off. I only have Gmail/Gcalendar syncing now.
I've been playing around with the phone(s) earlier as well - keeping it in airplane mode and just watching movies/etc. makes it last forever. It really does seem to be something with the signal and perhaps something in Sense.
Have you tried CleanRom? I do like the visuals in Sense, would be sad to go to bone-stock ICS... but battery is more important.

Rooting, and unlocking the bootloader
I was able to go from stock 1.85, to sick-sense ROM in a matter of minutes yesterday. I was nervous at first even though I know what I was doing, although all was good after following the instructions given on each step of the process. I haven't really bricked a phone before because this was my first smartphone ever, But I believe that the worse thing that can happen is soft bricking your phone, which can be resolved by RUU. I hope this helps you out.
Regarding OP, I had MUCH MUCH more battery life compared to bone stock. I used to get 3 hrs screen on time with 20% brightness, now Im at 4-5 on 50% under similar usage. One last thing to note; LTE, Auto sync, GPS, and low reception, are the most battery eating thing on the phone assuming you don't have rouge apps (wakelocks).

GPS has no affect on battery life unless it is being actually used. Its not going to drain battery just by being enabled. Auto sync has minimal impact on battery as well, unless you are getting 5 emails every 1 minute. Push is always more battery friendly than pull. (unless there is heavy traffic)
About the low reception thing. While it does indeed affect battery life when the phone is constantly looking for service, it is not as bad as you would think. I sit in an area at my work that has about 1 bar of service. The phone will go from 1-0 bars to searching, about every 5 minutes or so ALL day long for 8 hours. To see the impact this had on my battery life, I did some experimenting. I basically ran my phone in airplane mode for 3 days and then compared and averaged the results over 3 days of normal use with the phone having bad service.
I lost 8% more over an 8 hour work day.

No, I didn't try clean ROM. But, I took the change log from one of the clean ROMs and deleted most of the apps that can be safely deleted. So, I do sort of have a clean rom and it works fine so far - in terms of battery life. When I used to boot with stock rom, I used to have 150 - 170 mb free ram. With the clean up that I performed - now, free RAM is 270 - 300 mb after a reboot.
Try disabling LTE and see how your battery does.
Click on mobile network settings, and choose gsm/hspa auto.
Hi. I'm having a problem. The wifi is draining my battery. My battery will only last about 4 hours of screen on time.
I've already check the power option of disabling wifi when the screen is off. Wifi drains at least 40%of the charge.
I've read other forums but nobody has an answer just yet. I really like this tablet, but it makes me mad just having 4 hours of battery.
Driver problem, an app misbehaving, hardware problem?
What can I do? What should I do? How many of you are having this issue?

Depending on your usage, it is indeed possible to drain battery 3-4 hours. I myself never had that situation but for those who played highly CPU/GPU intensive game along with WIFI had that issue. I usually had 5-6 hours on my routine use which to me seems was not much.
So couple things I believe you should look into.
1. How is your monitor brightness?
2. What applications are you running? e.g. are you downloading on background with playing some game foreground?
Those sort of basic things. To identify whether the WIFI is actual issue or not, one thing you can do is simply turn off the WIFI and do whatever you need for couple hours and see where you at in your battery. If you have 50% drained in couple hours without WIFI on, clearly WIFI is not the issue but if you suddenly get only 20% battery drain from WIFI off, it is indeed the WIFI.
If WIFI is indeed the issue and perhaps you can try Juice Defender but it will only save battery if you are not using WIFI all the time.
For detail, please refer to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1805636.
One last thing is obvious, but battery save mode rather than balance mode gave me extra couple hours without sacrifice in my foreground application performance; however, I did notice main screen page swiping or application launch animation weren't as smooth. Almost felt like back to my old Galaxy 10.1 tablet on Honeycomb.
There is actually a bug that makes your battery overview show the percentage of wifi on time as percentage of wifi battery consumption:
-> wifi on 80% of time > shows 80% of power consumption from wifi.
How long do you have your device ?
When i first got it I also thought that the battery time was bad but now ( i have had it for about a week) i get battery drain of 10% / hr while surfing and 14-18 %/hr while streaming video over wifi and 0,5-1% / hr while standby with wifi and sync on.
I have the brightness on manual contorl and when i watch video i change the performance to eco setting.
Hi, thank you for your responses..... This is an update of what is going on.
I am already on firmware. 26, but had the problems since fw. 22
Yesterday I did a factory reset to rule out some mysterious app. The battery issue continued under wifi.
Wifi was still draining between 40 and 50% of the battery. Completely drained in about 4 hours of browsing time in balanced mode and about 40% screen brightness.
I just did another test. I played 2 movies with the wifi off. After 4 hours of screen on time the battery fell to 66%. So the tablet have enough battery juice for 12 back to back movies. That's great, I can rule out the battery.
So far I can confirm that the battery is draining extremely fast with wifi and is not a big showing erroneous battery drain.
4 hours of browsing tine is a joke for a tablet...
Any other things you think I can try?
For how long have you had it? No matter what people say, the calibration algorithms for these kinds of batteries still need several cycles of charging and discharging before they can actually read out any battery level accurately. I easily go for far longer than that on my device -- not that that fact helps you out, I know -- but I thought battery life was worse in he beginning as well. I guess it just needs to settle down a bit. Give it a week.
EIDT: Oh, and....eeehmmmmm.... do not believe the standard Android battery tool. Get yer mitts on BetterBatteryStats and get a few cycles on it, check the readouts and then report back in.

Thanks. I've already installed better battery stats.. While Web browsing battery drains up to 30%/h. I know is too soon to get to a conclusion. I will keep you post it.
Hope there is some firmware update that will fix this. This is Asus 5th tablet (transformer, prime, slider, tf300) I don't want a beta product!
Sorry about the whining, I know that you guys are helping me..
Battery life is really bad on this we need the motley kernel and some custom rooms soon !!!
I am running this tablet on performance and it is still very slow ccompared to my prime I hoped I can wait for the custom rooms and kernels before I sell this tablet i know i am very impatient
i have a tf700 too and have the same problem on wifi I love this tablet, i think we need to find a fix. Hope to hear from some of the smart people on this forum.
The reason for the low battery is this; Asus did not put a larger battery in Infinity compared to Prime.
Both devices have the exact same battery, but since Infinity runs at a higher clock speed and has a higher resolution screen, it drains the battery much much faster.
You can't really fix this with software. You can however lower the voltage with a custom kernel, making slightly improvement....but that'll also make the device unstable.
Just to let you guys know, i have assigned a fixed ip address for my Tf700 and the wifi drain seems to have decreased. I won't rely on the native android battery monitor (mine still says 85% battery drain by wifi). But i have noticed much less actually drain/hour when using wifi with a fixed ip address than not. YMMV.
I am curious about the battery in the one x, and especially the habits of consumption.
I have been around the block with android development. I had a captivate before this, and managed to get great battery life out of that! That was much more simple however. Flash a rom, cycle the power, cycle, cycle, cycle. Then you're good to go.
I feel like the way that the one x deals with the battery is different, more advanced. Some bootloader level software that is untouched, like the hardware keys and whatnot.
My battery has been hit and miss to say the LEAST. I use BBS to take care of wakelocks, keep data and gps usage to a minimum (my regular use), and I charge my battery when the phone is dead up to 100%.
The back of my one x gets very very hot sometimes. This varies rom to rom. Started with stock sense ICS, took the OTA jelly update, now I am rooted, s-off, and on cyanogenmod 10.2 nightlies (which run insanely well btw). The issue is the same. It reacts the same, and is just as unpredictable. I have read about this, and know its a hardware issue, but I am still curious about it, as I have heard SO many different things. I am usually able to quickly curb the issue by turning on airplane mode, or turning my phone off (for a while, as rebooting doesnt seem to help).
In passing, I also read something about "HTC Charge Mode". I have read forum posts where people say things like "hold both volume keys and the power button for two minutes, this with re-calibrate the battery circuit." There are so many combinations of keys and timings that people talk about that I can't help but believe that it is all garbage.
The heating up is typically caused by camera usage, data (radio, I assume) usage, games (temple run 2, gyro), and sometimes even spotify (offline playlists). Wifi seems ok, not too much of a contributor. When I was on stock sense jellybean, I was able to fix a lot of the heating up by turning off "google location services".
The weirdest part is that if I feel the phone warming up, I can go into airplane mode like I said, and its fine. If I keep perpetuating it, however, it gets very, very hot. Hot enough, im sure, to melt soldered connections. I turn on airplane mode, and it doesnt get much better. This is when I have to turn it off. Sometimes it hurts my leg in my pocket if I absentmindedly leave data on.
So I want to know -
1) what is the deal with the battery on the one x
2) can I cycle the power like I could on my captivate?
3) if you know anything I don't about the heating up issue, please share
Thank you so much for reading! I look forward to the possible feedback!
TL;DR - please read the post! I'd really appreciate it!
One thing I do know is that after doing your initial few charge cycles when flashing a ROM, it's better to not actually let the battery level get too low before charging. I read an article by a battery scientist, he stated that continual full discharging of the battery will decrease the long term battery life. So, it's best to do top-up charges from ~40% to full charge. Obviously you can disregard this when doing your initial charge cycles.
Some of these phones heat up more than others. Having the phone in your pocket or any enclosed space for an extended period of time will encourage it to heat up. I can't remember the technical term, but it's a combination of there not being enough air flow around the device to facilitate its cooling down, and nowhere for the heat to go. So it just gets worse.
So knowing that, there are some steps you can take to mitigate the heat, even if only in a minor way.

My beloved red Nexus 5 starts acting up... the battery drains extremely fast. Some weeks ago, I could barely make it to 2pm without having to recharge after unplugging. So I got a new battery (directly from LG, so definitely a genuine part) which improved the situation, but didn't completely solve the problem. Additionally, I flashed a CM 13 CAF ROM (using myfluxi's kernel) onto the N5 - I enjoy it so far, but there was actually no further change converning battery life.
Right now, the phone is at 10% after being unplugged in the morning at 9am. Wifi, bluetooth, GPS and mobile data were constantly on, cell signal was mostly perfect, wifi was connected for about 3h, bluetooth was always connected to my Moto 360. Screen on-time is about 2h and I listened to music using GPM for about 2h. The battery settings do not indicate any app using up too much battery power - it shows the display at 15%, cell standby at 10% and then several apps.
What do you think - a Nexus 5 with a new battery should make it through a day, shouldn't it?
I remember my first Nexus 5, back in the days with a G watch, making it through a day without any problem with 15-20% left when I plugged it in before going to bed... because of that, I start to think if there might be a bad electronics part, like the display backlight or something on the mainboard, using up too much power without being noticed by the OS. Is that possible?
Thank you very much for your advice!

Read and post in the battery life troubleshooting thread stickied to the top of this forum, it will help logically determine what is using your battery.
You have a lot running at once, so difficult at the moment to solve your issue. It's better to turn things on/off one by one to make logical conclusions whether it has any noticeable effect.
The best logical way to conclude if it is a hardware problem is to go fully sock no additional apps no root etc, see if it 'drains' by itself
If not hardware, then 99% of the time it is a bad app(s) keeping your phone awake
This is likely not the case, but have you checked the CPU settings? I've only encountered such a drain while using performance governor together with overclocking.
Same here
I have the same problem and I have been banging my head about it, I don't really use my phone for anything much else than a phone and I kept having at least 3 days of using it with no problems.
Now the phone barely lasts 2 days and even switches off in the middle of the night...

In the OP's case, his drain is likely caused by having GPS on all the time. That will absolutely devour battery life, so he could save himself some grief by turning it off until he than your phone turns off occasionally. First guess would be the power button going bad; that is generally the reason for needs it.
For you, who knows? You've not given any information, otherthat type of behavior

Yes, sorry about that I was a bit annoyed at the phone. I found and fixed the problem. Go to settings > apps > disable google fit > click yes when it gives you some notifications about how you'll lose data or stuff like that > and click force stop at the end for good measure.
I am in my second day now of battery life at 59% with a looooooooot of talking today , I mean more than usual so it is definitely a fix for me. Hope it helps
Take care gents

Again same problem
Hi all,
Unfortunately I have better battery life but I am again losing a lot of battery.
I have a screenshot but I am unable to upload it sorry about that.
I use my phone mainly for calls roughly about 15 mins per day at the most in total ( not a lot at all I know) and I also have my bluetooth on at all times cause I have LG G Watch.
thing is that I have never had problems with the battery before. When I say before back in the day I still had my LG G Watch ( I have it for about 6-7 months) . Problem with the battery started roughly around 1 month.
Location is off, wi-fi is on on very rare occasions throughout the day when I need to check my e-mail and mobile data is the same. Navigation is used only if needed.
The real problem is that before I knew what was draining my batter now I have 79% of battery usage and I have 5 apps listed that drained each 1%
Android System 1%
Phone Idle 1%
Screen 1%
Google play services 1%
Android OS 1%
Where are the other 15 % ??
It is weird I really took pride in that phone and his battery life, I know that it is mainly because I don't use it as a regular used do i.e. gaming, facebook etc, but I still want to charge less than 1 time per 2 days or less
Thanks in advance
Regards
Nik

As stated above, read and post in the battery life troubleshooting thread stickied to the top of Q&A.
They will help logically diagnose what is using your battery.
Hello, this is the battery drain of Mi 11i( haydn,SD888). I have this problem since the day I bought the phone, I tried multiple official roms and updates and neither helped. Right now I am on latest MIUI 14 version for the phone, and since I won't be updating it any time soon, I decided to tap deeply into the problem and rooted it, put LSPosed on it and installed many analytic apps that may help. Phone has abnormal "Other" app battery drain while standby, but even with rooted apps, I cannot see the culprit. At first I thought that the "SNS_SMD" sensor, also known as "Significant motion" sensor is at fault, since I saw very large amount of wakeups from it before root, actually constantly while the phone is off. Besides that one, there is also "RMNET_DFC", also used quiet a lot while idle. I managed to get SMD sensor under control by disabling it via sensor disabler app. Weird thing is that the GSAM still reports it being used, even after I disabled both it and sensors like step detector, but now after disabling it, it is not used constantly, "only" half of the uptime of the phone. Next thing, "RMNET_DFC" is also fixed, it's cause was something to do with google play services. Now GSAM reports it's usage of about 1-2h while standby, it used to be also for the whole uptime of the phone while it was idle. Even thou I got those things kinda under control, I still have 1800Mah drain in battery tab by "Other" app. Neither better battery stats nor GSAM report what is it. That "Other" app drain is completely gone if airplane mode is turned on, but I don't see any "radio" or "cell standby" like other people do when they have a problem with the modem. Mine is listed, but the drain is neglegable. I said that the phone is not useable since it lasts me about 2-3h of screen on time during the day while using basic apps. Funny thing is, when I go on a gaming session, charging up the phone to 100% and playing some very demanding 3d games for 2 hours, I am left with 50% battery life at the end of the session...

I noticed one thing which you didn't seem to have noticed. Your mobile signal. It is poor and usually that is a huge drainer since it will constantly search for a better signal. Try to move the phone to a location where the signal is better and try some observations.

Thanks for the insight, I know that modem has to work "harder" when the signal is weak, but didn't know there is much difference between 4 and 5 bars. I am running 4g even thou I have 5g support here, 5g usually has 4 bars while 4g usually has 5, sometimes dipping to 4 when weather is bad but even then I am getting about 100mbps download speeds. According to the BBS screenshot shown above, it seems that the weaker signal isn't a big deal tho since it was at moderate signal for 53 min in total. I will see what will be the result with 3g but last time I tried while the phone was not rooted, there was not much difference with standby battery health.
Not really an answer you are looking for, but you do have a lot of junk apps installed. It is easier to charge your phone twice than let all that junk run on your phone.
