Volume rocker button mushy? - Asus Transformer TF700

Are your tablets volume rocker buttons crisp? Mine is 'mushy' and doesn't seem to spring back to it's normal position well.

Mine seem to be crisp. It does make a clicking sound if that's what you're asking. I can feel a little "give" when it springs back.

MIne were a little mushy at first, but seem to get better with use. This was with both of the tablets I got from amazon.

No - mine is 'mushy' on one side, crisp on the other. The two don't actuate the same.

Mine is mushy.

wonder if a bunch are sloppily put together or if it's lousy by design.

Were you able to solve this? The volume up button on the volume rocker is mushy on mine. I can feel it barely, push down if I look for it, but it goes so far down that its flush on that side, with the plastic back plate.
Would this be a legitimate reason to ask for a replacement via warrenty? Or is this too common for that.
I may wait and see if it gets worst. If anything it just makes volume up harder to bump by accident. But I find it annoying just the same. >_>

in my tablet the volume rocker sometimes works fine but most of the times its mushy

Yeah I don't know what to do next about it, but I guess we have to live with it. Kind of disappointed with that but realize the reviewers might 'overlook', some things in order to keep manufacturers happy...

My volume button is okay but the power button is definitely mushy. I am on the fence as to what to do about it. Although it is not a big deal at present I am worried that it could be a sign of problems in the future. If my power button were to stop working in say 3 months time and I tried to RMA it I think there would be a good chance that ASUS would say that it is 'customer induced damage'. Other than that my Infinity is perfect - I am not sure whether this would be a crazy thing to return it for

I see this as potentially problematic. Does anyone have a teardown of this thing? I'd be interested in if this is an easy fix or should i return it and try another one (still within my 14 day return window)

my gf's is the same way. in fact, the power button has 0 spring back in it. seemingly just stays down flush with the chassis. it works, but feels odd. luckily the buttons on mine are all springy and feel fine.

The volume buttons on my TF700 absolutely suck and are difficult to use. I have to press hard just to get them to respond. The power button is fine however.
I think over time the volume buttons would just stop working altogether at this rate...
Rob

I dont really use my volume rockers. I use an app called Audio Manager Pro which has widgets to set the volume for specific sounds. All up, silent, just for movies, just for music, etc. You can set up a widget for anything you want. If you want to watch a movie, and dont want to hear the alert notifications, you can set up preset for that as well. Its a great app and usually one of the first apps i install when i set up my devices.

Is there a case on it that's making it feel mushy?

The little buttons are kind of useless.
That volume rocker is difficult to operate for this user.
I can never figure out whats up and whats down.
Mobiletechreview kind of raved about the volume rocker being better.
I wish it was on the right upper side in landscape with the Asus logo on the bottom.
Also I wish the power button was on the left upper side in landscape (Asus logo and port on bottom)
These buttons being on the top edge IMO is the worst spot for them.
...and again that 40 pin keyboard dock port provided with no micro USB alternative
is a total pain in the ass...

I think they pushed out a bad batch of tabs with defective rockers. They don't have these in our town locally anywhere, so I can't check another unit, but the replacement I got from amazon was just as bad as the previous one. I would love it if someone could find one that felt right to know if this is by design or a general fault.

Takes awhile getting use to as I have big hands. They should of had two separate buttons for volume IMO - Mushy-YES !

Mmmmm...
Does "mushy" mean unresponsive?

Game Grip for Epic 4G!

So after thinking about emulator options and how the Epic 4g is gonna be perfect for all types of emulators, I discovered that GameGrip, has a phone request form where you can ask for which device they should make Gamegrips for!

GAME GRIP REQUEST
I requested black with blue buttons! I think everyone should request them make a Epic 4g model! *winkwinknudgenudge*
This is just what I was looking for, I totally forgot about the Game Gripper and it seemed like a pretty awesome idea when the first one for the Droid came out. I went ahead and requested they make one for the Epic 4G, black and blue as well.
i replied too
i put black and red, but black and yellow makes a lot of sense too

I'm still a bit skeptical on how well the gamegrip works, but for about 14.99 i think its worth trying!
I hope they make a gamegrip for the Epic, games would be even more aweosme if they made one. I also put in for Black and Blue.
cool device. filled out a request form too.
Cool But not really needed for the epic considering it has a keyboard.
Too bad they couldnt implement one some how to work on phone with no keyboard.
I cant wait to get the epic.

These are meant specifically for phones with keyboards so you don't press the wrong buttons. It looks simple and sweet and not ridiculously priced.

Someone was asking about the Gamegrip on a Droid Incredible. Do you realize how ridiculous it would be to put a gamegrip on a touchscreen? It would cover up the majority of the screen.
Yeah, these are definitely only for phones with keyboards.
Just saw the video review on the Gamegrip for the N900, and it looks awesome!
They should put these things on the new iPhone, could you imagine the headlines?
Game grip kills death grip, and plays games too.
I have requested one as well, black and green =) I ask anyone with a minute to spare to do so as well, even if you yourself wouldn't get it. You'd be helping those of us who would like to have one =)
Please request GameGripper for Epic with XBOX color scheme. Its the best!

Color requested isn't as important as the fact that you request the EPIC 4G.
When they release gamegrips for different phones, you have the option to choose the color/buttoncolor when purchasing the grip!
Submitted a request to help further your cause...and possibly mine...
Submitted a request
I submitted a request as well but I also asked if they could possibly add 2 more buttons since a decent PS emulator is available on the Android Marketplace now. Atleast I've heard it was decent.
Figured since the Epic has a huge keyboard they might be able to fit 2 more buttons on there. Doesn't look like the current GameGripper has enough buttons for playing PS games with all the buttons. I know placement will be weird but some PS games need R1, L1, R2, and L2. I doubt the power button and camera button can be mapped as playable buttons in the emulator.
EDIT: Saw a YouTube video of someone using the GameGripper on their Droid and they were able to map the camera button and volume buttons as shoulder buttons in an emulator.

On ALL of the emulators (psx4Droid, gameboid, gbcoid, snesoid) you are able to map ALL buttons on the phone except for power & home buttons.
Back on my Nexus, I used the volume keys, and the capacitive keys as start/select buttons for emulators.

Oh really?
I was thinking that the 4 home/back/menu/search buttons on the sides of the keyboard would work good as the L1/L2 & R1/R2 triggers.
TBH, until the psx4droid is coded a bit better, i'm probably gonna be sticking with old school GBA and SNES emulators.

Had to replace my tb=/

So I had the sunken power button on my tb and wasnt going to get it exchanged but it kept sinking and now is flush with the top of the phone. So now I will have to reroot it once I get it should be in tomorrow. Hopefully this isnt a recurring thing with HTC

Nope they were really helpful I emailed them because I am away at college now and cnt get to a verizon store and they didnt even ask for a picture(which i took incase they asked) should be coming in tomorrow. I just said how it was really hard to hit the button since it had sunk in so far. Hopefully the one they send doesnt have this same issue.
The power button on the Thunderbolt does not stick out much anyways so your replacement probably won't be much different than the original.

Well seeing how my tb now the button is flush and all the ones i saw on the internet stick out farther and some saying theres stick out as much as the volume buttons anything is better then how it is now.
I'm aweful concerned about this too because I constantly use that button in lieu of any other hard buttons I can depress to activate the screen. I use my phone as a clock all the time, and since I'm a little OCD I look at it like every 30-45 minutes to see what time it is (and how soon I can have my next break and therefore cigarette, but I digress). I hope this doesn't happen to my phone.. I'm already outside my 14 days.
Would this be covered under warranty?

They will likely ask you for a credit card to put a temporary hold in the amount of the phone's value. When they receive the old one, the charge goes away. (The charge is for collateral, in the event you do not send the old one back.)
If your doing a warranty replacement. No credit card is needed. They actually ship you one fedex and then you have 5 days to ship back the old one. A sunken button does qualify as manufacture defect. Also couple things to note, if you do do a warranty claim its free but they send you a like new referb device. But if you go into a corporate store they'll switch you out right there on the spot with a brand new one. Warranties are good for a year upon initial purchase. Warranties doesn't cover lost, stolen, water damage and physical abuse.

[Q] Screen Defective??

I finally opened the new eee pad today. It sat on my desk for almost 4 days. SO I open it, and turn it on. Immediately I notice small pixel lines moving from bottom to top on about 1/4 of the screen. If we were to hold the screen in the panoramic way and cut it into for slices, it would be slice 2 which has these lines going up. I really hope its not terminal as its seems to be getting better with usage. Im charging it now and will try using it some more later but something is telling me this sucker is defective and that perhaps the screen ribbon cable is nicked or not making contact properly.
Anyone else have this issue? This blow. I had 3 tablets in total and I sold the rest. I ended up keeping the faulty one. FAIL!
BTW its more prominent on darker screens. But at times its not. Its weird. On a black screen you dont see it but if its slightly lighter and I mean SLIGHTLY, you will see the lines. When the screen is fully lit , lets say the water wall paper with the cube, you see no lines. It looks like line artifacts.

Yeah looks like its not good. I was thinking it might be a "driver" issue and an update might help. But Asus pulled the update so thats a no go.
Taking a pic is not easy since its very small lines. I will try.
I might just go grab an iconia for the time being and compare the two. I know that, Im not going to see a replacement for some time. First batch releases ALWAYS has issues as you can see from the numerous threads up on weird issues here and there.
Its weird, it does it at random. Been clean about 20 minutes. Maybe it will sooth out

Maybe it's karma that's messing you up... but hope you get your screen fix though, such a shame
mine's been doing the same thing only in the last couple days, it seems it only does it for about 15 seconds occasionally when i first turn it on after it being in sleep mode for a while... it seems once it warms up it goes away, i haven't taken it back because it would be hard to explain when it is never consistent as to when it does it.
I bought gumbis, after about 5 min it goes away completely, even faster on white screens. It has to be the firmware, the original build 325

I've got the same issue on mine, appears to be on darker screens with deep blues... not so much on black screens or white.
Please see the attachment for where on the screen it is appearing. I may be able to capture it on video but the flicker is literally a few miliseconds and it's gone. It's only occuring on screens that are the "Android Setting" background. I've watched some video, viewed other pictures and backgrounds with varied colors and not seen the flicker.
Doesn't appear to be a software issue. I was able to use the screenshot tool and tried to capture it quite a few times and wasn't able to. I may end up having to RMA it already, just got it out of the box.

Please keep physical buttons for Android phones...

Heard that Google is going to try to shift Android phones away from physical buttons (home, menu, search, etc.) but I really prefer the physical buttons especially when I have a phone in an Otterbox and I go snowshoeing and have to use gloves on.
Perhaps we need both virtual and physical buttons but I really prefer physical buttons. Any takers?
Agreed. I also prefer physical keyboards over their virtual counterparts.
Also agree. Though I love the virtual keys I find myself in situations where physical keys are a necessity. This is one of things setting Android phones apart from Apple with consumers who aren't comfortable with virtual keys.
physical buttons are old school in a progressive high tech device development...
There will always be a demand for buttons; For example, Japan: http://www.everythingandroid.org/fo...ese-android-flip-phone-with-16mp-camera.2438/
+1 agreed. I live in Hawaii where the humidity is always high no matter what time of the day. My phone's capacitive buttons sometimes activates without pressing due to moisture collecting under the buttons causing extreme frustration sometimes!

By all means, get rid of the physical buttons...IF YOU WANT TO TURN INTO APPLE. Sheesh, just leave well enough alone. Buttons work and they aren't ugly or bulkiy if the design is done right.

One man's "well enough" is another man's "not enough" - hence we get the evolution of devices. My grandfather wishes everything still had a rotary dial. "Well enough" for him peaked in 1965. Manufacturers want devices that look futuristic... so buttons are gonna go. The question is, can we make touch screens that work as intuitively and as well as buttons? That's really your only hope.

I feel like "physical buttons" are a way of the past. It's almost as if they are outdated. Plus this allows for many physical ware and tear.
I think it depends on what type of phone you're making. When you're making a slate phone like the SGS2 or something like that, having one or no buttons looks best. However when making a larger, more durable and maybe heftier phone buttons are great.
Meh, having no buttons gives a sense of a premium or advanced product.
I think it depends on the design. The Desire HD has very nice touch keys, but if the phone had physical buttons the design would be ugly
Yeah agree.

agree. frequently used physical buttons to closing apps by long-press.
Physical buttons are more expensive than virtual keys. Expect that physical buttons will become limited to premium business-oriented phones, and cheaper phones will only get virtual keys.
Plastic instead of wood and metal, expensive concert tickets vs. cheap music downloads, processed food vs. fresh produce... physical buttons vs. virtual keys is just a variation on the same old theme.
I support this!

Looks like this one is going back today at lunch.
Is it not supposed to do that? Mine does the same thing and I haven't really thought anything bad about it. I wish we can control the intensity of the vibration like I could on my Captivate.
Anybody else having this ticking issue when you get haptic feedback on the keyboard? If I type five or six letters really quickly I get one tick sound at the end. It only happens on mine when you type really fast.
As in from the speaker? Isn't that changeable in your settings?
Edit: go to settings > keyboard > select whichever keyboard you use > then make sure Audio feedback is unchecked
To be honest with you, it sounds like its making the auto focus camera tick. Its coming from that area on mine, could be anything on the motherboard getting shaked with the vibration. I can make it tick more when I hit the home button repeatedely. Im still within my 30 day window on the phone if it comes down really needing it fixed. Thanks for turning up my OCD about 300 degrees.

No it's not supposed to do that, my first phone didn't.

Haha, sorry. It's exactly that sound, it's making me want to kick small animals.
uhhh..i just realized that my speaker is making a high pitched noise all the time. I took the case off and the sound shifted toward it. It only makes that noise if the LCD screen is turned on though. You have to put your ear right up to it, toggle the LCD screen on and off and makes the noise.
Oh and your right, it does make a tick sound at the end of the vibration, sometimes it makes even a louder click during mulitple presses. Geez I may have to go and get this puppy replaced now. I'll just have to hide superuser, luckily I titanium backed up everything. Will only take minutes instead of hours to get everything back.

oh good god mine does the high pitched noise too. not sure the high pitched bothers me, i'ts so faint. I'm gonna pack it up and head to the store in a few. I love this phone, i just want my old one back
UPDATE: Well they had already sent my first Atrix 2 back. I swapped it out for #3 now, and all is well. No more vibrate tick/click or whatever. The high pitched whine is still there, I don't think that's going away. I tested the same thing on a few other phones here in the office and got similar noises from the speaker. It almost sounds like alternator whine on a car stereo.
If you do not mind, could you please PM after you make it home? I would like to know if you were able to get a good replacement unit. I already spoke to Best Buy and they said they would be more than happy to replace if after they looked at it.
Edit
Awesome! I may take mine back as well for a replacement, the tick isn't really annoying. But more than likely it will keep getting worse and worse after prolonged usage.
