So after thinking about emulator options and how the Epic 4g is gonna be perfect for all types of emulators, I discovered that GameGrip, has a phone request form where you can ask for which device they should make Gamegrips for!

GAME GRIP REQUEST
I requested black with blue buttons! I think everyone should request them make a Epic 4g model! *winkwinknudgenudge*
This is just what I was looking for, I totally forgot about the Game Gripper and it seemed like a pretty awesome idea when the first one for the Droid came out. I went ahead and requested they make one for the Epic 4G, black and blue as well.
i replied too
i put black and red, but black and yellow makes a lot of sense too

I'm still a bit skeptical on how well the gamegrip works, but for about 14.99 i think its worth trying!
I hope they make a gamegrip for the Epic, games would be even more aweosme if they made one. I also put in for Black and Blue.
cool device. filled out a request form too.
Cool But not really needed for the epic considering it has a keyboard.
Too bad they couldnt implement one some how to work on phone with no keyboard.
I cant wait to get the epic.

These are meant specifically for phones with keyboards so you don't press the wrong buttons. It looks simple and sweet and not ridiculously priced.

Someone was asking about the Gamegrip on a Droid Incredible. Do you realize how ridiculous it would be to put a gamegrip on a touchscreen? It would cover up the majority of the screen.
Yeah, these are definitely only for phones with keyboards.
Just saw the video review on the Gamegrip for the N900, and it looks awesome!
They should put these things on the new iPhone, could you imagine the headlines?
Game grip kills death grip, and plays games too.
I have requested one as well, black and green =) I ask anyone with a minute to spare to do so as well, even if you yourself wouldn't get it. You'd be helping those of us who would like to have one =)
Please request GameGripper for Epic with XBOX color scheme. Its the best!

Color requested isn't as important as the fact that you request the EPIC 4G.
When they release gamegrips for different phones, you have the option to choose the color/buttoncolor when purchasing the grip!
Submitted a request to help further your cause...and possibly mine...
Submitted a request
I submitted a request as well but I also asked if they could possibly add 2 more buttons since a decent PS emulator is available on the Android Marketplace now. Atleast I've heard it was decent.
Figured since the Epic has a huge keyboard they might be able to fit 2 more buttons on there. Doesn't look like the current GameGripper has enough buttons for playing PS games with all the buttons. I know placement will be weird but some PS games need R1, L1, R2, and L2. I doubt the power button and camera button can be mapped as playable buttons in the emulator.
EDIT: Saw a YouTube video of someone using the GameGripper on their Droid and they were able to map the camera button and volume buttons as shoulder buttons in an emulator.

On ALL of the emulators (psx4Droid, gameboid, gbcoid, snesoid) you are able to map ALL buttons on the phone except for power & home buttons.
Back on my Nexus, I used the volume keys, and the capacitive keys as start/select buttons for emulators.

It maybe different from phone to phone, but on my hero i can use the home and power button. I really hope that we could use some of the phone buttons for the l/r buttons on the epic

Oh really?
I was thinking that the 4 home/back/menu/search buttons on the sides of the keyboard would work good as the L1/L2 & R1/R2 triggers.
TBH, until the psx4droid is coded a bit better, i'm probably gonna be sticking with old school GBA and SNES emulators.

Hi
I realized that there has been tons of thread about fav apps, games, phones, etc. but never about phone design. I have realized that I am not happy with my phone design, as a matter of fact there isn't any phone in the market of my design. So I have decided to draw it and talk about it (since I cant make it, lol). I am pretty sure others in this forum have prefferences for design.
DPAD/Track ball
I have moved to Android recently, bought a x10. After x10 came out I have started to note that a lot phones recently don't have dpad or track ball. I guess since multitouch screen came out they started to take out the dpad and track ball. You can see it in all of the new phones; just to name a few
Acer Liquid
Motoroi
Nokia X6
Samsung Captivate
HD2
TG01
Some HTC phones still have dpad though. It might seem very useless if you think about it. Now if you think it is useless try this, start typing and make a mistake (a wrong alphabet) but keep on typing then, try to come back to that alphabet. See how hard it is! When you are trying to go that alphabet, you tap on to the word but the cursor doesn't fall on that right place. Now if we had a dpad or track ball it would have solved the problem. I can totally understand why companies are recently avoiding those. I believe it is because, if they have to put a track ball or dpad it take up more frontal area therefore less area for screen (otherwise the phone will become pretty big). At the same time track ball and dpad both are big mechnical system so it takes volume too.
In motorola Backflip they really had an itelligent design. The trackpad in the back, I think other phones should do that too. Imagine nexus without the bottom part. It becomes small!!!
BUTTONS
Recently buttons are becoming touch-sensetive buttons. Why touch button?? They have no physical feedback! Well I understand it takes up more space and size to acomodate physical button, especailly when you have to put three or four. But there could be better way to solve this. Say you acomodate one button and four touch button. Now when you put your finger on top of a button, the LDR sences your finger then when you depress it then it fires. So it will be a plate of LDRs on top of a physical button. Check the pics for better understanding.
So anyone else has other designs??

I love the HD2 design, the pure simplicity and utility of it. Although the Nexus One is the most beautifully designed phones out there I perhaps slightly prefer a bit more industrial look.
Now if only I could snug a N1-type glowing trackball somewhere in there...
My phone has to have a portrait physical qwerty keyboard and a touchscreen, so either a front facing keyboard touch screen candy bar or a portrait touchscreen slider.
This is my favorite design, shame nothing continued that unbeatable line
Also Like Leo, Rhodium and Maple designs
I know I'll be going to hell for saying this, but the design of the iphone 4 is my favorite thus far. I noticed that a lot of smartphones out nowadays (HD2, incredible, EVO, droid, droid x, iphone 3g/3gs, etc etc) really don't have a simplistic and elegant look to them. Something always gotta stick out, odd lines, little chin, curvy body, etc. But with the iphone4, everything is flushed. It doesnt wobble, nothing is really sticking out where it shouldn't and most of all, it looks very elegant and "high-end." Sure I couldn't care less about the iOS, but I have to give props to the designers and the manufacturing processes to achieve that level of end result. I just wish HTC would pull their collective heads out of their asses and start going industrial with their design. Looking at their leaked 2010 roadmap from the beginning of the year, it seems like all their phones have the same shell but just different internals.
EDIT: of course, I'm talking about the overall aesthetic and not radio antenna placement ;]
I'm going with a slide-out keyboard.
The black-berry design with they keyboard under the screen, the keyboard is too small and hard to use.
I love my Tytn II, the newer phones with the Snapdragon CPU would be great.
Touch Pro 2 design, same idea.

You're not alone. There's so many Android phones coming out, but I have yet to see one that is able to match the aesthetics of Apple or even Nokia. I really wish there was an Android phone that looked as good as the iPhone 4.

X10 actually looks pretty damn good, up untill you put it in your hand and realize that it is made of cheap plastic. But asthetics is not everything, we need to make them usable too.

I think the Tilt2 would be ideal if they replaced the stupid slider bar with a d-pad and then made it slide the same way as a Palm Pre so you could one'hand text with buttons.

does this thing scratch off the paint of your phone by taking it on and off?
edit: the distance of the buttons are weird... like the A of the snes controller is so far away from the YXB...
I'm not sure why it would mark the phone at all. Its completely rubber, basing on what I've seen on other grippers. But anyways, how exactly does it work? Do you have to program buttons for each button on the gripper? Someone enlighten me!

Within the emulator programs, which this is really designed for anyway, you can specify any key to use for any function. This thing is basically just an overlay on up of your keys to make it more ergonomical and easier to play. On the upcoming Playstation store, I'm sure you'll be able to specify keys as well (that's my hope!!).
Just ordered the SNES-colored one $18.99... better be worth it!

very doubtful, it clips around the phone and keyboard.
Ordered an SNES colored gg last night as soon as they came up.
Can't wait to get it. I've been wanting one really bad since I got my G2.
On the site, in the FAQ section it says that it will not work with a case.
"Will the Game-Gripper work with a case?"
"No, it will not."
I ordered the Snes and the Xbox ones yesterday, should have it by Monday =D (International Priority Air)

The HTC Desire Z game gripper is here!
We have put the same care and attention into crafting a game gripper for the HTC Desire Z as we did
for the original Motorola Milestone which was very well recieved.
A lot of people requested an accessory that provided the same experience on the HTC Desire Z .
We read the requests
We listened
We took action
We present the game gripper for the HTC Desire Z (insert imaginary trompet sounds )

K, first feedback!
I love everything about the game gripper EXCEPT! And its a big accept. Every key I press is nice and responsive but the left key...
The left key is the ".com" key. The piece of plastic that presses down on the left key is not completely centered on the key. It is on the right of the key. Which doesn't give it perfect responsiveness and the push back click snapple bottle type thing. Really pisses me off because i ve heard so many good reviews about other. They should have made sure that it pressed down on the center plain and simple.
I will most likely contact them and see if we can get something changed... I would love for this thing to function correctly...

I agree 100%, I just got mine and this is my only complaint, it works though its just not nearly as fluid as the other buttons.
For the lucky few who have their transformers, how is the build quality? I'm actually typing this up from my Motorola Xoom right now and really like it. But the transformers IPS screen is really drawing me. Also some of the other features like the dock, and front facing speakers. But the larger size is scaring me away. The bezel looks alot bigger the on the xoom especially length wise. Is it noticeable \ bothersome? I really like the xooms design and build quality
. How do you guys feel about Asus's? anyone with experience with both who can comment?
I have a few more days to return the xoom so I need decide if waiting for the transformer to come to the us is worth it.
Also is the transformers bootloader going to be unlocked for sure?

its very nice build, does not feel cheep. there is a little movement on the back if you press it in the right place. but apart from that its perfect in my opinion. im using swiftkey tablet beta. which is perfect and makes typing on it super easy. and in portrait its super easy to type. im finding everything on it much easier to do than on my girlfriends ipad. i've always like asus since i got a eee 4g surf(one of the first netbooks). and a eee pc 1001ha(netbook). and always been impressed with there build quality and design.
cant say about the bootloader. but im sure people will try. i know paul from modaco. has a eeepad. and has all ready rooted and optimize it. just waiting for honeycomb source so they can deodexed the system allowing. custom kernels, roms, mods ect
You've been watching videos, but haven't actually seen one ?
The bezel looks big in the videos becasue you can't see the very nice old gold casing that surrounds the device, i may be a bit larger than the xoom or galaxy tab, but after you've picked it up twice you don't notice it.
the main unit, pad, is solid built, and most of the unit is metal, i will consider it heavy, especially if you combine the keyboard, as both unit has built in battery, but you do get over 14-16 hours of use, comment from asus rep, and it's very thin.

On real keyboards I type with all 10 fingers, so I wonder how it works on a touch screen. Probably not at all.

It's just a name man... It has a layout very similar to the swiftkey beta split layout(just works a hell of a lot better). There are actually 4 or 5 different layouts in the the paid version and you can have different layouts based on landscape or portrait .

Yeah you can. The point is to be able to hold the device and type at the same time. With a tablet, it is kinda hard if the keyboard isn't split because it is physically hard to reach the center part of the keyboard.

Heard that Google is going to try to shift Android phones away from physical buttons (home, menu, search, etc.) but I really prefer the physical buttons especially when I have a phone in an Otterbox and I go snowshoeing and have to use gloves on.
Perhaps we need both virtual and physical buttons but I really prefer physical buttons. Any takers?
Agreed. I also prefer physical keyboards over their virtual counterparts.
Also agree. Though I love the virtual keys I find myself in situations where physical keys are a necessity. This is one of things setting Android phones apart from Apple with consumers who aren't comfortable with virtual keys.
physical buttons are old school in a progressive high tech device development...
There will always be a demand for buttons; For example, Japan: http://www.everythingandroid.org/fo...ese-android-flip-phone-with-16mp-camera.2438/
+1 agreed. I live in Hawaii where the humidity is always high no matter what time of the day. My phone's capacitive buttons sometimes activates without pressing due to moisture collecting under the buttons causing extreme frustration sometimes!

By all means, get rid of the physical buttons...IF YOU WANT TO TURN INTO APPLE. Sheesh, just leave well enough alone. Buttons work and they aren't ugly or bulkiy if the design is done right.

One man's "well enough" is another man's "not enough" - hence we get the evolution of devices. My grandfather wishes everything still had a rotary dial. "Well enough" for him peaked in 1965. Manufacturers want devices that look futuristic... so buttons are gonna go. The question is, can we make touch screens that work as intuitively and as well as buttons? That's really your only hope.

I feel like "physical buttons" are a way of the past. It's almost as if they are outdated. Plus this allows for many physical ware and tear.
I think it depends on what type of phone you're making. When you're making a slate phone like the SGS2 or something like that, having one or no buttons looks best. However when making a larger, more durable and maybe heftier phone buttons are great.
Meh, having no buttons gives a sense of a premium or advanced product.
I think it depends on the design. The Desire HD has very nice touch keys, but if the phone had physical buttons the design would be ugly
Yeah agree.

Couldn't have said it any better myself, I find myself using both. I've even reverted back to my trusty G1 in certain situations.
agree. frequently used physical buttons to closing apps by long-press.
Physical buttons are more expensive than virtual keys. Expect that physical buttons will become limited to premium business-oriented phones, and cheaper phones will only get virtual keys.
Plastic instead of wood and metal, expensive concert tickets vs. cheap music downloads, processed food vs. fresh produce... physical buttons vs. virtual keys is just a variation on the same old theme.
I support this!
I always enjoyed typing on a hardware keyboard. Unfortunately phones with physical keyboards are no longer produced (except blackberry).
The phone i used until now was nokia n900, but its battery died, so i decided to move on. I wanted a device like htc tytn 2 or htc touch pro 2 but with today specifications. I found none.
So i got a samsung galaxy note 4 and decided to add a hardware keyboard to it. I know that for galaxy s4 there are some bluetooth keyboard cases, but they does not allow full control of the interface. I wanted something with a mousepad.
For that i found the Rii mini bluetooth keyboard. It is about the same size as the note 4.
With two ringke slim cases, i build a slide mechanism that can also tilt:

Did you consider those similar keyboards that connect via bluetooth or is the USB host for something else?
The usb host is for connecting any usb device. I make a small host adapter which i keep in a free space in the keyboard case:
nice one. where did you buy the keyboard from, in Romania?
i bought it from olx.ro, but i also found on robofun.ro
I have a very similar keyboard. How would I go about connecting the keyboard with the phone? I am not trying to make a slider phone, but just want to use the keyboard wirelessly with the phone. Thanks.
That is freaking awesome. I have that same little keyboard, I may have to set aside some time to make one of these for myself.

well, there are several model of this keyboard available. some of them are using wifi, some bluetooth. If your keyboard is using bluetooth, simple activate bluetooth on the phone, turn on the keyboard, on the phone search for bluetooth devices, you should find the keyboard, select it, it may ask you to introduce a code, insert it, and you are done.
If your keyboard is using wifi, you'll need to use a usb host adapter to plug the wifi adapter that came with the keyboard to the phone usb. I didn't use such a keyboard before, so not sure what you have to do after that.

if you have access to a 3d printer, you can make it look alot better, however the slide mechanism should be made from metal, becase the note 4 is not very light.
I would really like to see something similar, so if you can find some time to do it, please post the pictures
Maybe you have better ideas about the slide and tilt mechanism.
Best regards,
Liviu

My keyboard has an usb dongle I have to plug in somewhere. I wasn't sure how it connected until much later after looking at your pics much more closely. I ordered an otg cable, hopefully it works out. Thanks man, and that is a sick mod.

I wouldn't have the first clue where to find a 3D printer, unfortunately. That's a good idea though.
I have a couple of cases that would work well for this and I think they'd look nice with a leather covering, so we'll see what I can come up with. I'll definitely post pics when/if I do this

I have to see what I can rummage up for the mechanism, I may have to make a trip to Fry's or something. I'll probably keep it similar to your design cause I like the slide & tilt thing. I'm out of state visiting my mom all week so I have lots of time to brainstorm :good:

Sounds great! I have some ideas that can remove those bulges from the first case:
The idea is to use some screws to fix the case to slide and cut the metal bends that holds the first case:
Flipping those two small holders will give you a space in the middle for the screws, allowing you to slide easily:
I'm not sure if i have time this weekend to do this on my case, but you can try it out.
if someone makes this for me I swear I'll buy it or if someone could give me a link to some official ones I would love you forever lol. I need this in my life

I'm afraid you won't find this anywhere to buy, you'll have to build it yourself.
yeah unfortunately I realized that after looking online for like 3 days straight lmao. literally impossible to find. I don't know why this isn't a thing I think it's absolutely amazing. brings me back to the G1 and Moto XT & all that.
I've searched all over for Note 4 keyboard cases and didn't find any like with my old S3, sadly, but then you went and made one! Looks nice!
I just wish that keyboard had backlighting, since I use my phone in dark rooms fairly often. But since it's a DIY effort anyway, I might as well base it off one of those old S3 cases that did have the backlighting and the classic HTC slide action with tilt.
